DeLay On Abramoff: I Love You, I Love You Not, I Love You…

DeLay, Northern Mariana Islands, 1997:

When one of my closest and dearest friends, Jack Abramoff, your most able representative in Washington, D.C., invited me to the islands, I wanted to see firsthand the free-market success and the progress and reform you have made.

DeLay, in a letter to his constituents, 2/6/06:

The reality is, Jack Abramoff and I were not close personal friends. I met with him only occasionally…

CNN, on DeLay’s reaction to the new Vanity Fair article, 3/9/06:

REPORTER: There is one powerful Washingtonian who is not disputing Abramoff’s accounts in the Vanity Fair article. Republican Congressman Tom Delay’s spokesman tells CNN he has no quarrel with anything in the piece which stated that the two were friends who would talk about philosophy, politics, and golf.

Now that DeLay is back to acknowleding the “close personal” nature of his relationship with Abramoff, will he also start talking more about what they did together?

  3. WiscoDuk Says:

Lock them up together. See what kind of friends they become.

  4. Grace Pinter Says:

How can someone just so blatantly ignore what he said in the past??

  5. crazy canuck Says:

#4. Because it seems like no one is going to do anything about it. Therefore, they'll continue to blatanly lie.

  6. Optimist Says:

Howdy there Sugarland Texans! Do you boys like apples? Let’s see, your boy gets in a little dust up, tells you all that everything is okay and that it’s just a big misunderstanding and that some n’er-do-wells are out to git him, and you go ahead and give him your approval in the recent primary.

Now it comes out that he LIED to you (again). So, your boy is as sleazy as the day is long and fed you all a load of manure and you all gobbled it down like it was a slice of apple pie. Which now begs the question, how do you like dem apples?

On a positive note, though, you all in Texas have now surpassed South Dakota as being the Stupidest Place On Earth. Good luck to you folks down there.

  8. Jules Says:

Optimist - There are about 5 of us down here that are democrats. OK, that is an exaggeration, maybe 10!

I make it my mission in life to piss off as many republicans as possible on a daily basis. That is the only fun about living here!

  9. G.W.SuperChrist Says:

#4 - When you are a Republican, it is easy to ignore what you've said in the past, because most Republicans don't fact check. Hell, they don't even fact acknowledge.

If acknowledging and accepting facts means altering your world view - Republicans simply will not do it.

They have cloaked themselves in a comfortable and safe world of fantasy, which they will not leave under any circumstances... even if this means ignoring the undeniable truth.

Why do you think so many of them are against the teaching of evolution? Maybe because accepting evolution means that the scriptural security blanket that they call the Bible is not completely accurate, and if that's true, than maybe God is not backing their every move… Hell, maybe there ain’t even a God….LA LA LA LA LA LA… What Evolution… LA LA LA LA LA… I can’t hear you… LA LA LA LA LA….

  10. Optimist Says:

    #8-Jules,

Sorry to hear about yer predicament. I'm a wonderin', though, when you go to pick up a gurl for a date and she wants to introduce you to her mother and her sister, but then when you go to meet them there is only one person standing there, doesn't that sort of freak you out?

    Just curious.

  11. Zookeeper Says:

That's harsh, Optimist. Funny, yes, but harsh.

  12. Cyra Brown Says:

Clearly, DeLay is preparing for an "insanity" defense for his pending trial. He thinks he is SO smart. (snicker) He's like a child, putting his hands over his eyes, and thinking he is hiding. Hey Tom, we can still see you!

  15. jodi Says:

Yes,what exactly did Abramoff and DeLay do together besides expensive golf trips to Scotland?
I'm more curious about Abramoff and Ken Mehlman!
    ICK!

  16. Optimist Says:

    #11,

I'm glad that you recognized the humor because that was my intent. However, I was purposely harsh because I think that the situation demands it. We really cannot blame the current crop (bad apples?) of politicians for not taking responsibility for their actions when the people keep electing them and then don't take responsibility for theirs. Plus, how many times can you give people a pass when they keep making monumental mistakes that affect the whole nation?

So, I'm sorry if anyone from Texas is offended. But I can guarantee you that the millions of people, both American citizens and citizens of the world, who have suffered and died due to the sleazeballs that folks are electing into office are not the least bit amused and most certainly offended. And those are the folks that I have sympathy for, not the pitiful morons that keep electing the sleazeballs.

  17. G.W.SuperChrist Says:

#16 - I agree, but how do you stop a pitiful moron from electing a sleazeball? (Not A Rhetorical Question)

  18. Jules Says:

Optimist - I am liberal, but not that liberal. I don't date my own gender - not that there is anything wrong with that.

  19. betty Says:

I wasn't surprised to see that the bum was once again going to have his name on the ballot. How can you people be so stupid as to know what a corrupt person Delay is and he'd cut your throat as soon as not to save his ass.

They must make the most ignorant and stupid people in the world in Texas, we have a president who doesn't know shit from shineola and he hails from there too.

Good Luck you all will need it!!!!

  20. Optimist Says:

    #17,
The solution is much more simple than you think, be unrelenting on the responsibility of the VOTER. If a community elects a known criminal, then you cannot blame the criminal for being elected and performing, well, criminally, but the community must be held accountable. So, as I now call the people of texas, and especially sugarland, "morons" then they cannot cry foul because it is they who acted in moronic fashion.

    #18,
Thanks for the laugh and I apologize for the gender confusion.

  21. Zookeeper Says:

#16 - I agree, Optimist. My wingnut sis and her wingnut husband and their wingnut kids live in Texas, and you can probably guess who they voted for, what can I do? :p

  22. Optimist Says:

    #21,

Once again, simple - if either wingnut hubby or wingnut kids are of an age that allows them to perform military service in Iraq or Afghanistan, then they MUST enlist. Only a coward sends others to fight their battles.

  23. Jules Says:

Zookeeper - you think it is bad having a relative as one of "them", try living amongst them. I taught high school for awhile and even the teachers down here are conservative. I had Kerry signs in my classroom but they couldn't say anything because one of the assistant principals had Bush signs in his office.

I do not have it as bad as some. My sister-in-law lives in Lubbock and on Tuesday the principal of her sons school was putting up signs in front of the school, a polling place, for republican candidates.

  24. mighty aphrodite Says:

TP staffers to each other, "Gosh....fund-raising has really fallen off since Tom Delay isn't front and center....damn!!"

  25. mighty aphrodite Says:

Jules - You and the principal should have traded a few Kerry and Bush signs with each other - but who wants to come across as balanced - especially in a classroom?? Why wasn't I surprised to learn you were a teacher????

  26. Cyra Brown Says:

#25 Yes, it was GWB who set the standard for "coming across as balanced, especially in a classroom, the morning of September 11, 2001. He's a "natural". No wonder you admire him so much.

  27. Zookeeper Says:

#22 - Optimist, sis & hubby can't wait for my nephew (not my niece) to turn 18 and sign up. Nephew can't wait either. They're all in for a shock because as far as I can tell nephew is as gay as they come.

#23 - Jules, I feel for you. I live in Idaho and all the nuts around here refer to public schools as "government schools," as if it's some sort of conspiracy against them. Sis & hubby really like their public school in Texas because it teaches all the "right" things. Too bad because niece & nephew are quite bright, but their heads are being filled with mostly crap Monday-Friday, and even more so on Sunday.

  28. Jules Says:

Don't worry Zookeeper - many of my daughters friends are self-described republicans. When I ask them why, what they believe in they cannot give me an answer. They are republicans because their parents are.

I have taught many bright kids and many of my daughters friends are very bright. I have faith that when they go into the world they will wise up and see the republican party for what it is - corrupt.

MA - you also will not be surprised then to learn that my daughter is a lesbian and I am a member of PFLAG - make that a proud member!

  29. mighty aphrodite Says:

#26 - Cyra, Your ignoRANT comments are from a tangental universe - try again..
#28 -Jules - I am SURE the proudest (not to mention happiest!!) day of your life was the DAY your daughter jumped out of the closet and you joined P-FLAg. Jules, I'm not surprised at ALL!!!!

  30. mighty aphrodite Says:

Jules- A quick question - as a parent, am I supposed to be proud of my heterosexual children - for being heterosexual? You're proud of...what? Sadly, it doesn't say alot about your daughter (or you) when you feel compelled to tell me her sexual preferences (nothing else - nothing about her fine qualities, or talents) just "stuff" that's none of my business - but you want me to know... don't care....

  31. Bo Griffith Says:

I generally agree but you can't take a direct mail quote as if he really said it. Most direct mail pieces are written by some bozo who has never met the congressman and the congressman rarely reads it.....so it is questionable whether he lied or not but I am glad that he reiterates that they were good friends. How good?? Do they know each other's golf handicap? That would probably tell you.

  32. Progressaurus Rex Says:

    frau tripey,
it's because of bigots like you that insist on furthering the notion that people are supposed to be ashamed of their friends/children/siblings/parents/etc that are homosexual that others who actually KNOW, LOVE and CARE about such persons feel the need to reiterate their pride , understanding and caring.

your statements are unconscionable and illustrate your prejudice, fear and closed-mindedness.

one day your heterosexual children are going to be ashamed of you for what an incredible bigot you are. they will furthermore be in the unfortunate position of having to un-learn the hatred and fear that you have instilled in them under the false guise of "values".

frau tripey -> teaching the fascist values, ironing the brown shirts for her hitler youth every day.

  33. mighty aphrodite Says:

Dear ProgREX - You're missing the point - no surprise there - I don't care who's kids are gay, bi, have dental veneers, are diabetic or artificially tanned - IT's NONE OF MY BUSINESS! Let me repeat for you s-l-o-w learners - I DON'T CARE!!!

Don't you think it's a little weird that a parent tells strangers about his /her kids sexual preferences???? I NEVER ASKED - and I think it's pitiful for a girl to have such a self-absorbed parent - like having a homosexual child is a badge of honour?? (A question: why would anyone be proud of a child being homosexual? Why would any parent be proud of a child being heterosexual? But then, I often note the "habitually offended" members of the prog "community" - and you NEVER fail to live down to the expectations I have for whiners.

  34. mighty aphrodite Says:

P.S to Prog Rex, who arrogantly, yet stupidly states:
"your statements are unconscionable and illustrate your prejudice, fear and closed-mindedness."

My statements are not unconscionable - a parent putting out the info about his/her daughter is unconscionable. Poor daughter!! But the real news: 99.99% of parents EVER says, "the HAPPIEST day of my life was when my child told me they were gay," No, a loving parent does just that - they LOVE their kids - period. But most parents (after suspecting a child is gay or being caught off guard completely) shed a tear and love their kid with all their hearts. I believe the ignorance and prejudice lie with hyper-defensive people like yourself. Once again, I hate to reiterate for you remedial types - I DON'T CARE, IT'S NONE OF MY BUSINESS, and my sincere condolences to Jules daughter for having such "tell all" parent.

  35. Progressaurus Rex Says:

actually it's you that's missing the point. i get exactly what you're saying. you make bigoted comments and then ask why should someone have to promote a different view.

and my answer was, in case you missed it: because bigots like yourself willfully and continually enforce the notion that homosexuality is something to be ashamed of.

it's a social reality that there is a segment of the population the loathes and fears homosexuals, as if they are afflicted by a disease or mental disorder.

to say you're proud of a gay relative or friend is merely telling all of those who would embrace bigotry, fear and hatred that their homophobia will find no comfort in these quarters, so you'd best not start.

if you didn't care you wouldn't make bigoted comments, tripey (i refer specifically to #29, where you don't state that you don't care, you merely make a rude comment that was meant to offend and imply shame -- and don't try to claim otherwise because it's there for all to see).

for someone that claims to not care, you're gawking at the subject like a rubberneck at a five-car pileup. you can't trivialize your way out of bigotry by claiming not to care -- after you've already made clear where you stand on the issue.

furthermore, you never fail to live down the expectations i have that you will make a bigoted, prejudiced or otherwise closed-minded statement. with that approach, you're not changing any minds, tripey.

"I believe the ignorance and prejudice lie with hyper-defensive people like yourself. Once again, I hate to reiterate for you remedial types - I DON’T CARE, IT’S NONE OF MY BUSINESS, and my sincere condolences to Jules daughter for having such “tell all” parent. Comment by Mighty Hermaphrodite"

Yet another bigoted republican calling tolerate people prejudiced. You're a fool, a hypocrite, and merchant of hate and ignorance. MightyTranny you're a disgrace to the human race.

  37. Ryan Neat Says:

    Jules,

Good for you and your daughter. There's nothing wrong with being gay, or telling people your child is gay. And only a hate filled, bigoted, intolerant and probably closeted homosexual like MightyTranny would ever see this sort of honesty and tolerance as a negative thing.

The morons like MightyTranny say that homosexuality is 'none of anyone's business' like it's a dirty secret. Would you say whether or not your child is dating someone, or is married, or if they were pregnant that it's no one's business? Would you say if they were attending college it's no-one's business? Would you say if they played sports, that it's a secret?

Republicans have to be some of the stupidest, most out of touch, and hateful people on the face of the earth.

Mighty Tranny shows why the closet is so bad, it teaches kids to turn out like Mehlman, MightyTranny, MizzWrong and every other repressed rightwing homophobe. Only homosexuals and pedophiles are homophobes - which are you MightyTranny?

  38. WaltTheMan Says:

    Recent rants - ma,
Hadn't the Cheneys noted pride in their lesbian daughter in spite of the Republican platform's position on homosexuality? That was until Kerry had the tepidity to mention it as a credit to their tolerance.
Do you understand the meaning of hypocrisy?

  39. Progressaurus Rex Says:

    Ryan,
I was going to add something just of that nature -- the new defense for bigotry is to claim that the persons against bigotry are bigoted themselves. yep, those tolerant assholes, they're the reason this country's gone to shit.

yep, i'm prejudiced against bigotry, and proud of it.

  40. MickeyG Says:

I think everyone should come out of the closet, & we should have more parades, not only for the homosexuals both normal looking & flaming; but there should be parades for Saddists & Masochists on floats with their whips & chains; parades for Fetishers with their favorite 5" stillettos & underware; the ones who like to hang themselves...gallows on parade, and the rest. They are all people who should be treated equally. But, I agree with Mightytyranny...just leave it in the bedroom, not in my face, and enjoy! By the way, what happened to Delay & Abramoff?

  41. Susan Savarise Says:

Because liars tell so many lies, they cannot remember them all.

  42. WiscoDuk Says:

Ahh…the gay issue again. Better get practiced up talking about it. It’s right behind abortion on the republican “agenda” list for the coming elections. Since their policies continue to be a disaster, the rethugs are counting on emotional issues to overcome substantive ones.

Mighty is just a right as Ryan, Jules, and others on this gay topic in my humble opinion. I believe my feelings mock most peoples in stating that I could give a $hit who’s gay or who marries who. The topic makes many people uncomfortable and they would rather not hear about it. The rethugs have mastered polarizing the issue to the point where dems are considered “for” homosexuality and them “against”. (Unless it’s the Gannon mystery- which they won’t discuss). The same naïve minds that link Saddam and 9-11 think the dems want to make their children gay.

I can’t scream it loud enough. The dems have to diffuse this and other emotional issue bombs if want to win elections.

  43. WaltTheMan Says:

OK, I'll say it as simply as I can- The sexual orientation of anybody is not the business of government - be you a couple, lesbian, homo, nympho or wolf - the only criteria should be consent. When rape is the issue, the seed should be purged and the dispenser removed. The Bible told me so.

  44. Jay Randal Says:

DeLay and Abramoff were Brokeback Mountain partners, so they were damn close lovers > lol.

  45. mighty aphrodite Says:

Note to RyANNe & ProgREX - People shouldn't be "tolerated" - how insipidly condescending of you! People should be liked or disliked on the basis of their integrity, actions, etc. But it doesn't change the fact that I didn't ask Jules about his daughter's sexual orientation - TMI.

  46. WaltTheMan Says:

    ma,
Neither did Kerry nor did Thomas. It was public information. Is your head still cast in marble or granite?
I’ll say it as simply as I can - The sexual orientation of anybody is not the business of government - be you a heterolsexual couple, lesbian, homo, nympho or wolf - the only criteria should be consent. When rape is the issue, the seed should be purged and the dispenser removed. The Bible told me so.
