House will still hold vote to block Dubai deal.

“The U.S. House of Representatives will forge ahead with a vote on blocking an Arab-owned company from managing U.S. ports, to ensure the firm sheds its U.S. holdings as promised, a leadership spokesman said on Friday.”

“In order to win the war on terror, we have got to strengthen our relationships and friendships with moderate Arab countries in the Middle East,” Bush told newspaper editors.
What he really wants to say is, “If we cannot give this deal to the Arabs… I think we should give it to Halliburton, they are doing a heck of a job in Iraq.”

Good Deal! You go Guys and Gals!
Looks like yer all finally gettin’ a stiffer spine and upper lip.
SOME of you all have a chance of bein’ re-elected yet this November…..

  3. katy says:

ike – that’s the point…this is a very rovian ploy – he wants to keep IMPEACHMENT proceedings from happening after this election…

but, like you, i’m impressed – or will be if this vote to block really happens…

  4. Jack Hicks says:

The Dems need to inspect that “deal” Warner pulled out of his pocket on the Senate floor. He looks like a old shady undertaker. He doesn’t have any more princple than Pat Roberts. Even the comparatively good ones like Collins and Snow flip over.

  5. pluege says:

how funny (sad really) is that, that even repukelicans don’t trust the bushliar-criminal and expect a bait and switch.

  6. IKE was right says:

It all takes (to much ) time and there is way to much calculating for me to keep still, it is early spring, a long way to go till Fall… stay with me (US) keep throwing the rocks on the pile as they become available……..

  7. Congress is Allowing the President to Spy on YOU says:

Noone believes this. Screw the Neocons and their Democratic water carriers.

This is upside down world. Bush should be in prison for spying and the Dubai deal was probably good for America in the long run. Americans are stupid.

  8. Silly Little American Boy says:

Even if this were a Rove ploy, there isn’t enough muscle to push all of the other issues out of the public’s sight to get enough support for the GOP.
The only thing that would do that…
…when’s the last time we saw an orange alert?

  9. Dem02020 says:

In addition to the matter of seeing to it that no one in the House strips out the DPW ban from the supplemental that the full House will consider next week, we will still have the Senate’s concurrence (or lack thereof) to that ban.

And should the Senate somehow be bold enough to oppose Public Opinion on this issue (as the Administration has, although the word seems less ‘bold’, and more ‘arrogant’), and should they, the Senate, force a Joint Conference with the House over the ban (all of which will happen rather rapidly, this supplemental being a high priority), then the feathers will really hit the fan…

And let’s not be unaware, that all these media declarations that ‘the deal is dead’, all of which were facilitated by the UAE’s less than 24 hour response to the House Appropriation’s 62-2 vote to attach the ban; all that ‘the deal is dead’ noise has served to quiet the Public’s concern on the matter…

Which may well have been the point to such a rapid and universal declaration of ‘death’…

But it should not stop the ban, and will stop the concern of many of the People…

People such as us, who shall follow closely the journey that remains for the supplemental spending measure; a journey that may take little more than a week to ten days, before it shall be presented to the President for his signature.

Think of it, he shall sign the supplemental into law, with it’s DPW ban included.

    Think of it. ThinkProgress.

  12. James says:

the only reason this vote will be held is that Democrats, who need to look tough, and Republicans, who need to shed their Bush’s lap dog image – will score some points and tout it in their campaign ads.

The ‘ports’, actually the leases and any associated property, are being sold. DPW knows it’s position is untenable.

The bill is a joke because rather than ban the ownership/leasing of US ports by foreign companies or foreign government, they are targeting just one company. No mention of China (which is a serial human rights abuser and also props up North Korea with fuel and food), Denmark, Singapore, etc.

Hey, isn’t China an emerging threat?

The company will be sold to a private equity company in partnership with some kind of logistics company (which is why Halliburton was mentioned but there are many other possibilities). Maersk may be interested in partnering as there could be synergies.

The bottom line is a private equity firm, assuming the sell hasn’t been finalized, would buy the company for, say, $700mil and then sell 600 mil worth of junk bonds allowing them to gear up and only invest 100 mil in cash. The ports are a stable cash generator with little volatility (except in economic downturns).

  13. James says:

Lest you believe I cannot sleep while thinking of the wrong done to DPW, I am actually happy that the Democrats seem to have gotten a lift in their national security ratings as well as the ‘blank slate’ congressional elections.

My worry is that this will just be a one off. The republicans are with the Dems on this and once the seperation of Bush and the Bush Congress begins the ratings might change. Bush is a lame duck.

The reason ratings might change is that the Democrats have no clear message. Dean is polarizing (which is good for the base) but he also doesn’t get out much. The reps don’t seem to have many new ideas except ‘I followed their lead’.

Of course, it really all comes down to who emerges as the presidential nominee. I am thinking Clinton or Warner. Warner would have a chance at winning…while Clinton might not be viewed so well (which is unfortunate but due to taxpayer funded clinton bashing).

    #12

the only reason this vote will be held is that Democrats, who need to look tough, and Republicans, who need to shed their Bush’s lap dog image

I guess that explains the House Appropriations Committee vote to ban DPW, 62-2: The 2 being just 1 Republican “lap dog” and one Democrat, who must not have cared to “look tough” that day.

they are targeting just one company. No mention of China

How many of the 9-11 hijackers were Chinese? How many of those terrorists received their funds from China? That kind of blind idiocy, that is so confused as to think that China is a terror threat, is just the kind of criminal ignorance that would allow the real terror threat into this country. Thank goodness the American People and their Congress proved overwhelmingly this week not to be that stupid.

  15. thot's n tn says:

There is more to this sory. U.A.E has control and ownership supplying our trooops in the Gulf. That is strange .Since rotten food was delivered to our troops in Iraq I think a year ago. We blamed it on Halliburton but that was before the public knew of U.A.E.. The other deal.

  16. Major Lagg says:

I hope they do hold the vote. Let all the congressmen stand up and proclaim their racism!

  17. jurassicpork says:

I guess that it was inevitable that someone other than yours truly would compare the Bush administration to the Sopranos. Maureen Dowd thinks so, too, in this scathing and funny new article about the Dubai ports deal.

  18. Paul in Mexico says:

This vote, being rammed through by Rove and Hastert, has but one purpose, and one purpose only.

It is to allow the pukes who were for the deal to vote against it so they can go back to their lieges and tell them they were against this thing from the get go.

    Nothing more, nothing less.

  19. Citizen80203 says:

Too bad, this was a GOP nuclear suppository.

The Dem leadership better get cracking on this issue by proposing massive investments in port, border, and infrastructure security. By the way, where is our “contract” that was promised?
