The Los Angeles Times had a major story today reporting that Iran “may be losing its long-standing reluctance to speak directly with the United States,” but that the Bush administration is rejecting Iran’s overtures.
The Times falsely paints this as a major shift in policy both for Iran (in favor of direct talks) and the United States (against direct talks). The title of the article, for instance, is “Iran May Finally Be Ready to Talk.”
Actually, as the Washington Post reported in 2004, Iranian officials have made at least three separate efforts to initiate direct talks with the Bush administration. Due to sheer incompetence, all three went nowhere:
Bush has struggled — thus far without success — to roll back significant nuclear advances in North Korea and Iran. … Bush demanded that Pyongyang and Tehran reverse course [away from nuclear weapons], but his national security team could not agree on policies to induce or compel those governments to submit. The stalemate left three secret overtures from Tehran unanswered and a presidential directive on Iran unsigned after 31 months of drafting attempts.
Beyond the “axis of evil” rhetoric, U.S. policy towards Iran has basically been paralyzed for five years. The L.A. Times should be exposing that history, not whitewashing it.
But, but, but…
March 14th, 2006 at 7:39 pmThey’re the “Axis of Evil” and there’s a midterm coming up, and we’ve got to whip up the war fervor, again.
The big tilt in major media’s coverage of negative BusCo stories no longer surprises me.
March 14th, 2006 at 7:49 pmI wonder if the LAT had a story about the 300,000 or so folks who protested in Chicago recently? Yep, three hundred thousand……
A lot of you likely never heard a peep about this.
I suppose this is what happens when you lead by faith rather than fact. When faith becomes the fact, it’s challenging to change based on tangible evidence.
March 14th, 2006 at 7:52 pmWhy doesn’t he just sell them the weapons they want? It worked for me.
March 14th, 2006 at 7:54 pmGeorge W. Bush has to be the Champion of Incompetence.
The depths of his idiocy has no bottom.
Until this lunatic has been removed from office, you can expect more violence, hatred, and bloodshed from this incompetent misadministration.
March 14th, 2006 at 7:55 pmBake’em a cake! Send’em some bibles!
March 14th, 2006 at 7:57 pmit’s clinton’s fault, he left office 6 year’s ago but it’s still his fault.
March 14th, 2006 at 8:00 pmI am sure this was not due to sheer incompetence, but is a very well thought out plan to outwit the Iranians and remain strong on security issues because, you know, the best way to remain strong is to belittle allies, ignore “irrelevant” international treaties and laws, and then invade a country to civilise those barbarians, err, democratise those people. You know it will be a cakewalk, because *they* will welcome *us* with flowers and candy.
If things don’t go as planned, well, it’s Clinton’s fault. Or the liberal media’s. Somehow.
March 14th, 2006 at 8:03 pmWait a second. This story came from the LA Times? Where were they on the march to war? Where was the piece on the ‘no WMD’s in Iraq’?
Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate a little investigative reporting. Better late than never. But why did it take so long?
March 14th, 2006 at 8:17 pmWhen will the American people wake up? We have a media that seems primarily interested in promoting zionist propaganda. They sold the American people on the need to go to war against a toothless tyrant in Iraq…and they are now promoting the need for military action against Iran.
March 14th, 2006 at 8:29 pmDue to sheer incompetence, all three went nowhere
Look at what they have done so far.
They are doing/getting exactly what they want.
Increasing Corporate control, with kickback donations.
Removing the public from any participation in what is supposed to be THEIR government.
Currently so far above the law, they could care less what they are accused of.
War, as far as the eye can see.
Quite a respectable group. Cough, spit.
March 14th, 2006 at 8:52 pmThe LATimes is the sister of the Chicago Tribune — both are staunch apologists for Bush, the Republicans, and all conservative policies and propaganda.
March 14th, 2006 at 8:53 pmWhat is it going to take for the owners of these large news outlets to print the facts — Bush is going down in spite of their efforts to prop him up, so they should start the return trip toward objective journalism — sooner, not later.
Those mad mullas in Iran should kiss ole Bush. He gave them the middle east and they didn’t have to fire a shot. And if we get too uppity they’ll just start doing business in Euros. Bush better start realizing we’re stretched too thin and we owe too many people. People in congress better start realizing it also.
March 14th, 2006 at 8:54 pmAt some point can the news media create an independant oversight group that oversees print and television news. Able to publicly admonish and correct untruths(lies), bad reporting through misinformation, etc. I know it might sound drastic but it seems there are no repercussions for this bull anymore. Write it and get it out there and if anyone says anything it will be old news when someone else does it.
March 14th, 2006 at 9:36 pmINTERESTING.
THE LA TIMES HAS BEEN GOING DOWNHILL EVER SINCE THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE BOUGHT THEM, AND STARTED TURNING THEM INTO ANOTHER RIGHT-WING RAG.
SHAME.
March 14th, 2006 at 9:46 pmI think they are getting ready to invade.

March 14th, 2006 at 9:49 pm“he LATimes is the sister of the Chicago Tribune — both are staunch apologists for Bush” –Marie
The LA Times was bought by the Tribune Company in 2000, specifically in order to defraud the people of S. California and mute our voices.
The first CEO/Publisher was forced to resign after the paper lost most of its subscriber base by LYING AND SLAPPING US IN THE FACE FOR KNOWING THE TRUTH.
“I wonder if the LAT had a story about the 300,000 or so folks who protested in Chicago recently?” –snookered
WHY WOULD THEY? They are owned by the Tribune, so they don’t report Chicago news, just as they DIDN’T REPORT THE NEAR-NUCLEAR DISASTER IN FEB 01 AT (Bushbacker) FIRSTENERGY’S DAVIS-BESSE PLANT IN TOLEDO, and just as they didn’t bother to report that the 2003 Recall/Election was RIGGED and we caught them rigging it in Oakland.
Not one counting computer in the entire state had legal software in it.
They also just fired the most popular columnist they had, in order to run more rightwing bullsh*t.
Down with the Chicago LA Times.
March 14th, 2006 at 9:50 pmIt’s not incompetence, it’s a purposeful policy of pugilism designed to take us toward that highest manifestation of our nationhood–war. Iran, like Cuba, will never qualify for American friendship until they get a government that we can control.
March 14th, 2006 at 10:18 pmPaul in LA, we don’t get much coverage of California in the Tribune, I read it on line because my family lives there. I am disgusted with the Tribune and often write to them with my opinion of their reporting, their editorials, etc. The Tribune is a giant, (WGN radio, WGN-TV, LAT) and too full of themselves.
March 14th, 2006 at 10:38 pmThis is another sad explanation of news stories being squelched because the news is not favorable to the owners, or other affiliates.
his national security team could not agree on policies to induce or compel those governments to submit. The stalemate left three secret overtures from Tehran unanswered and a presidential directive on Iran unsigned after 31 months of drafting attempts.

March 15th, 2006 at 12:44 amWith Senate Democrats caving in, and not following a memebr of the Judiciary Committee’s attempt to hold the President accountable for illegal warrantless wiretaps, who could possibly be in the mood for much more of this idiotic “the President is incompetent” crap, or any more crap like “his ship is sinking”, or “his media hacks are criticizing him”.
That crap made me sick enough in the past, it has me wanting to vomit today.
Nobody sees what I’m talking about? Nobody understands that this Administration cares nothing about Public Opinion Polls, and criticism? Nobody sees that they have everything they want, and that they are unopposed and unchallenged and IMMUNE?
This hand-wringing crap about “see and hear the criticism” and “ooooh, he’s so unpopular”, it’s sickening.

Thank you Republican troll.
The caucuses are in pretty good shape, and most of the adults in the party are working on winning back the House. If you expected miracles from the US Senate, then you don’t have much of an education in the history of the Senate.
TAKING BACK THE HOUSE IS THE CRUCIAL TASK. Whining about the Senate Dems is STUPID and OFF-ISSUE.
Turning the Feingold resolution into a loss for Dems is a real swell accomplishment, you whiners. That resolution is just one more step in the right direction. But you wet your Pampers® in a USELESS tantrum ten times a day.
Fight for the House. And fight the real enemy, instead of turning on yourself and digesting your own stomach in a heroic act of self-destruction.
March 15th, 2006 at 3:57 amIf you are an American, and you are sick to death of this shit. Don’t vote Democrat Dog-Politician or Republican Lemming.
Politics is full of animals, you have doves, hawks, chicken-hawks, Donkey’s and Elephants. You have foxes and lions, and lastly you have lemmings and dogs.
What is a political dog?
A political dog is any politician so concerned with avoiding censure that they are willing to roll over and play dead on their oppositions say so. They are so interested in shoving their noses up the asses of the pollsters that they don’t see that the mass of people find that action lacking in integrity. Those Democrats who vote against Feingold’s resolution are dog politicians. Those who voted for the war and later claimed to be misled, as Clooney said, “Fuck you you were misled, you were afraid of being called traitors” are all dog politicians.
What is a political lemming?
Political lemmings are politicians who follows the party line, and refuses to challenge that line, when they see it is clearly wrong and headed for disaster. The important aspect to the lemming is that it may occassionally state its opposition to its party’s stance on a matter such as torture, but it will never take the final drastic step of outright rebellion or leaving the said party. McCain, much as he is one of the most respectable of the Republican Politicians right now, is one such lemming.
So if your choice is between a lemming, dog or just plain republican whore, who should you vote for?
Vote independent or one of the other, smaller parties. This next election is the one to watch for a third party. The Democrats no longer speak for the liberal left, and that has left a massive vacuum that a charasmatic independent or leader of a smaller party can fill.
You need liberals, not puppy dogs.
March 15th, 2006 at 6:17 amStop me if this sounds familiar but didn’t the Bushies stop listening to Saddam and his openness in letting in the UN inspectors come in? They’re using the same playbook and think that we’re stupid enough to fall for this next war.

March 15th, 2006 at 8:03 amOf course this administration does NOT want to talk with Iran, it is part of the “axis of evil” and would rather engage in “regime change”, preferably by invasion/occupation ala Iraq style.
March 15th, 2006 at 8:05 amI don’t know what the LA Times printed about Iran, but I do know that we are treading on dangerous ground. The conventional wisdom is that Iran still has years left before they can bulid a nuclear weapon, but I don’t trust them at all. I think we are making a huge mistake in not attacking those facilities now. There are those who argue that we can’t do it but, I know better. If we attack them it shouldn’t stop there, we should attack the command and control facilities, military barracks, airfields and any other vital facilities such as power stations, bridges, etc.
For those who argue that we can’t stop them, they have forgotten recent history, namely the first gulf war. Our airpower alone brought Sadams Army to it’s knee and we can do the same to Iran if the political will is there. You can’t let a dangerous country like Iran obtain nuclear weapons, because they would give them to terrorist without any regret. I don’t like war anymore that any other American, but this time our national security really is threatened. This is precisely why we shouldn’t be invaded Iraq. The President rushed to judgement on Sadam and invaded with no plan to do once we won the war. He should have fired Rumsfeld long ago, but his own arogance won’t let him admit he made a mistake.
He needs to remember that loyalty, stuborness, and fool hardiness won’t get you anywhere, except a bad place in history. His presidency is going to be remembered as one of the worst in history, unless he changes direction. He seems uncapable of firing people who makes mistakes and their mistakes have become his undoing. Take my advice and fire Rummy, put Dick in his box and think for yourself for once. He let Dick come out and speak on behalf of his administration the other day and the words he spoke were empty threats.
Dick’s policies gave us Iraq and I for one don’t trust him to make the right decision on Iran either. For one thing, it appears that they misled the public about WDM and people won’t trust them now when we really need to. That’s why you don’t go around invading countries without thinking about the consequences first. It like the boy who cried “wolf” all over again, as Yogi Beara might say. Wake up guys now it now the time to be sleeping at the switch, Iran is too dangerous to threaten and then take now action against. Remember the school yard bully (Iran). Well the only way to stop him is to hit him (Iran) in the mouth. Go ahead guys, this time you have my permission.
March 15th, 2006 at 8:34 amIraq had also attempted direct talks with the Bush administration before W and co. blew them out of the water. This is all an obvious run up to military action. Midterm elections are fast approaching and the GOP is flat on its face. Time for a war!

Funny that they think we are that malleable or gullible or whatever-able to just be able to show up and start the ‘newspeak’, and we fall in line.
March 15th, 2006 at 8:58 am#33 – 1st Lt. Brian Anderson, as a former veteran I am very proud of the time I spent in the service. I was stationed at the Pentagon, working for the Command & Control Support Agency at MF-741-C (Mezzanine Floor, under the parking lot to the north side of the building). My office was next to the Army Operation Center (AOC) and down the hall from the Joint Data Systems Support Center (JDSSC). I was housed at Fort Myer, VA. This was from 1986-1990, so the acronyms might have changed since that time. Col. Byrd was my commanding officer at that time.
Would your website be willing to discus the efforts to supply military personnel with proper protective armor by both military and civilian sources? How about the efforts to re-equip the vehicles to protect against IED’s? How about the efforts by active military personnel to be reimbursed for their having to purchase protective armor on their own?
I have a number of friends who are serving in both Afghanistan and Iraq, and I can assure you that we are not hearing all the good news, nor all the bad news coming out of those to theatres.
Please get back to me when you can!

March 15th, 2006 at 9:00 am#33, Yes and while you are at it please explain to all us tax payers why a officer who gets paid, $3170.10 a month is wisely using his valuable time here trying to change the political views of the American citizens. Instead of directly engaging the terrorists, is our lack of lock step agreement on the fiasco of both Iraq and Afghanistan such a danger to the pentagon that such a highly trained individual such as yourself needs to spend his time here. Are we her so dangerous to your war effort that the pentagon thinks it a wise use of the limited budget resources that it has. I mean we have to cut funding for headstart, programs for the elderly, poor, but we have enough money to pay your salary to “engage” us on the home front with your “approved” press releases. I’m sure that a hard charging individual such as your self can not believe your time and our limited resources can not be better spent.
March 15th, 2006 at 9:16 amThey’re not talking. They’re talking. They’re not talking. They’re talking. They’re not talking. They’re talking.
Maybe George Bush is right. Maybe the war in Iraq, though more protracted than necessary, is the right course of action, i.e. military. Could be. Could be that the insurgency is going to wind down quickly. Could it be that the US military and the coalition are really doing their jobs, and the job is getting done too? Maybe. Although, some have their doubts.
A representative from the US military makes an honest attempt to add his two cents worth, and he is immediately smeared as a military propagandist.
It does help to be a civil, not antagonistic and bigoted. Give the public affairs officer an even break.
Anybody got any of those pictures taken from inside of Abu Grhraib prison?

March 15th, 2006 at 10:35 amsnookered – Of course I didn’t hear about a protest in Chicago. Tell me more, point me somewhere. We need more of this kind of thing because walkin’ beats talkin’.
I can’t believe we’re hearing the same shit about Iran that we heard about Iraq and people are actually listening. Call me naive, but I really don’t care if anybody builds nuclear weapons. The world is full of them and anybody who attacks the USA with them has to be suicidal and they know it.
We have nuclear weapons and we’re not to be trusted with them. How can we call any other country out for building them? After all, we actually used them a couple of times. And it was the wrong thing to do.

The government wastes our money and them makes us suffer the consequences by cutting funding to our programs. It’s about time they started being accountable to us for their actions. Horn of Africa… What the fuck are you asseholes doing in my country? The Horn is South Africa, we are the relatively well off African country, you know the one that currently isn’t at war with anyone and is actually in a position to give aide South Africa.
Southern Africa okay, but what are you doing to the horn of Africa? Cape Town is pretty fucking well off, apart from Koburg (SP?) being on the fritz. If you want to do “good things” go north and deal with Zimbabwe. South Africa, is comparatively speaking fine, and we really do not want a US sponsored coup here.

March 15th, 2006 at 12:11 pmHey Monkey Knut Wrench, why the hostility?
I served in the US Army from 1986 until 1990 as a Private/Private First Class/Specialist working on computers at the Pentagon. I’ve sent money to my friends serving in Afghanistan & Iraq to helpo save thier lives over this “war for oil”, and you jump down my throat for serving?
Once you sign on the bottom line for your service, you life is in the hands of our elected leaders. You no longer have a choice over where you serve. I was the top of my class, so I got to spend my time at the Pentagon where my computer skills were useful.
Trust me, the majority of people I know currently serving in the military are probably more likely to NOT want to go to war. Who really wants to get killed so Pres. Bush & his buddies get more money?
I served for multiple reasons: I felt it was my patriotic duty to give back to my country; I wanted a chance to get OTJT for sumputers, I wanted to “see the world” outside of hicks-ville New Mexico.
Take a chill pill, back away from the keyboard, and unpucker buddy.
March 15th, 2006 at 12:43 pm#2 According to the news, its only 100k not 300, and it was a protest about illegal immigrant rights, something Bush tends to support, not be against. So your point isn’t just wrong on the #’s, its also wrong on it being against Bush.
But other than that, nice work……

YEAH, because losing the House so we can’t impeach the bastards is REAL important for progressives.
Bruce, which rightwing group do you work for? Or are you just the civilian wing of the Pentagon’s new outreach to liberals?
Third party this.

What the fuck is the point of voting Democrat if the guys you vote in pussy out every time somebody looks like saying something nasty about them? Seriously what is the point?
Or do you like having Bush leading the way to apocalypse while the so called Left in congress do bugger all? Actually vote in support of it in greater numbers then the frigging right.
Vote independent for every Democratic seat which shows zero spine, and then maybe something will change. The independents don’t all support Bush, and frankly what you have here is the result of two party politics, where the fucking Republican liars, cheats and thieves think they can neutralise their corruption by painting the Democrats as liars, cheats and thieves. If you three parties it is that much harder to use that weasel tactic.
Face it, the Democrats have had plenty of calls to arms before and they haven’t done shit about them. Kerry issued a call to arms, as did Murtha, and nothing, fucking nothing happened. You need liberal independents and smaller parties to get in now because frankly at this point the Democrats as a whole are NOT acting as viable opposition.
If you want to see Bush impeached, find out about your local independents, find out about the other parties and actually think more in terms of what you want in your government then what you want in your party. Vote independent if your Democrat representative has a nasty habit of not representing you or what you voted for. Vote independent when your Democrat representative shows so little integrity as to vote against a resolution he feels to be neccessary because he is afraid to be called a traitor. Vote Independent when your Democrat lacks ballls. Otherwise, if you agree with them, vote Democrat, but for once, open your eyes and look at the parties in front of you. There is more then just two of them.
And no, I am not a rightwinger, I am actually left wing, and proud of it. I don’t strive to tell lies when my arguments fail me, and I don’t strive to smear my opposition when they are clearly correct. I certainly don’t believe in the marriage of church and state, which only serves to breed illogical crap. I am an Atheist liberal fucking truth teller and I do not, see the point of supporting a party just because it isn’t the other guy. Lots of people aren’t the other guy.

If you were President George W. Bush with all available US troops tied down by the Iraqi resistance, and you were unable to control Iraq or political developments in the country, would you also start a war with Iran?
Yes, you would.
Bush’s determination to spread Middle East conflict by striking at Iran does not make sense.
First of all, Bush lacks the troops to do the job. If the US military cannot successfully occupy Iraq, there is no way that the US can occupy Iran, a country approximately three times the size in area and population.
Second, Iran can respond to a conventional air attack with missiles targeted on American ships and bases, and on oil facilities located throughout the Middle East.
Third, Iran has human assets, including the Shi’ite majority population in Iraq, that it can activate to cause chaos throughout the Middle East.
Fourth, polls of US troops in Iraq indicate that a vast majority do not believe in their mission and wish to be withdrawn. Unlike the yellow ribbon folks at home, the troops are unlikely to be enthusiastic about being trapped in an Iranian quagmire in addition to the Iraqi quagmire.
Fifth, Bush’s polls are down to 34 percent, with a majority of Americans believing that Bush’s invasion of Iraq was a mistake.
If you were being whipped in one fight, would you start a second fight with a bigger and stronger person?
That’s what Bush is doing.
Opinion polls indicate that the Bush regime has succeeded in its plan to make Americans fear Iran as the greatest threat America faces.
The Bush regime has created a major dispute with Iran over that country’s nuclear energy program and then blocked every effort to bring the dispute to a peaceful end.
In order to gain a pretext for attacking Iran, the Bush regime is using bribery and coercion in its effort to have Iran referred to the UN Security Council for sanctions.
In recent statements President Bush and Pentagon chief Donald Rumsfeld blamed Iran for the Iraqi resistance, claiming that the roadside bombs used by the resistance are being supplied by Iran.
It is obvious that Bush intends to attack Iran and that he will use every means to bring war about.
Yet, Bush has no conventional means of waging war with Iran. His bloodthirsty neoconservatives have prepared plans for nuking Iran. However, an unprovoked nuclear attack on Iran would leave the US, already regarded as a pariah nation, totally isolated.
Readers, whose thinking runs ahead of that of most of us, tell me that another 9/11 event will prepare the ground for a nuclear attack on Iran. Some readers say that Bush, or Israel as in Israel’s highly provocative attack on the Jericho jail and kidnapping of prisoners with American complicity, will provoke a second attack on the US. Others say that Bush or the neoconservatives working with some “black ops” group will orchestrate the attack.
One of the more extraordinary suggestions is that a low yield, perhaps tactical, nuclear weapon will be exploded some distance out from a US port. Death and destruction will be minimized, but fear and hysteria will be maximized. Americans will be told that the ship bearing the weapon was discovered and intercepted just in time, thanks to Bush’s illegal spying program, and that Iran is to blame. A more powerful wave of fear and outrage will again bind the American people to Bush, and the US media will not report the rest of the world’s doubts of the explanation.
Reads like a Michael Crichton plot, doesn’t it?
Fantasy? Let’s hope so.
