Former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said today that Iraq is in a civil war:
It is unfortunate that we are in civil war. We are losing each day as an average 50 to 60 people throughout the country, if not more. If this is not civil war, then God knows what civil war is…We are in a terrible civil conflict now.
In 2004, Bush said it was unacceptable to question the credibility of Allawi’s assessment of Iraq:
Well, Prime Minister Allawi was here; he is the leader of that country. He’s a brave, brave man. When he came, after giving a speech to the Congress, my opponent questioned his credibility. You can’t change the dynamics on the ground if you’ve criticized the brave leader of Iraq.
Does that only apply when Allawi says what Bush wants to hear?

Bush administration attacks Allawi in….3,2,1…
March 19th, 2006 at 9:35 amOh c’mon. That many peole die in American cities everyday.
March 19th, 2006 at 9:39 amrevelation that Ben Griffin, 28, told his commanders that he was no longer prepared to fight alongside American forces. The soldier, who had served with the regiment for two years, had expected to face a court martial but was allowed to leave the Army with a glowing testimonial in June last year.
He confirmed that he had also witnessed occasions when American troops punched and kicked Iraqi civilians during house searches. He added: “Once I saw an American soldier verbally abusing an Iraqi so badly I was forced to intervene.
“I don’t know why the SAS are in Baghdad. They don’t seem to be doing anything of any consequence. The intelligence they are acting on is not good and they seem to be spending their time arresting criminals rather than terrorists.”

March 19th, 2006 at 9:45 amAs best the IAEA can tell, the Iranians are telling the truth, even about things they have told the IAEA that they were under no obligation to tell.
In report after report, IAEA Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei says that all “declared source and special nuclear materials” are now accounted for and that there is “no indication” of undeclared materials, nor of a nuclear weapons program in Iran.

March 19th, 2006 at 9:52 amWar consists of killing people and destroying property. That’s all there is to war. Any honest soldier will tell you the same thing: His job is to kill people and destroy property. That’s true of all branches of the service.

March 19th, 2006 at 9:53 amAny moment now the right-wing blogosphere and Fox News will begin the Swift Boat campaign against Allawi…Isn’t he French?
March 19th, 2006 at 9:57 amHay, A Dark Germ, thanks for the site. Had not seen this one…..Very good…….Blessings
March 19th, 2006 at 10:04 amI think release Saddam Hussein back to Goverment as its taken 3 months for this democratically elected morons to even think about a goverment and still not even any closer ..there making fools of the american democracy …Now is the time to release Saddam as he is the only man to get Iraq back together. and get your troops OUT NOW and stay out , America public cannot even have a peace demonstration anymore without more than 1000 people turning up …whats the matter with you all ???? gods sake
March 19th, 2006 at 10:06 amOn the other hand, maybe there won’t be any attacks on Allawi. Remember not too long ago Fox news, “Civil War in Iraq; could it be a good thing?”
Look at it this way. A civil war in Iraq will be used to justify American Armed Forces presence for the forseeable future. Our forces will hunker down in fortressess and protect oil pipelines while the Shiites and Sunnis kill each other in a blood feud that has lasted centuries. America will secretly support Salvadoran-type death squads (if that is not already being done).
At the earliest possible opportunity, America will cross the border into Iran to secure its oil fields.
yes, civil war can be a good thing. As long as you are watching, and profiting, from the sidelines.
March 19th, 2006 at 10:10 am#9: “At the earliest possible opportunity, America will cross the border into Iran to secure its oil fields.”
This could be of major interest to the petrolium industry:
Saturday night, Audi made auto racing history by winning the 12 hour endurance race at Sebring, Florida, using a turbocharged DIESEL engine that outperformed and ran cleaner than the state-of-the-art normaly aspirated gasoline powered cars like Porche, Ferrari, Corvette, Panos, etc.
Why is this important? This new technology demonstrates that high-performance cars capable of using ALTERNATIVE FUELS for consumers are just around the corner. This may be the shot in the arm the auto industry needs to finally move away from gasoline powered cars and lessen our dependance on Arabian oil
March 19th, 2006 at 10:19 amIf Allawi’s message received the Bush Crimeco seal of approval before going public it would have voided the credibility of the message.
March 19th, 2006 at 10:20 amAnything this administration says or supports, past or present, good or bad, holds no weight; anyone who wants their words to be taken somewhat seriously has to distance themselves from Bush, even Jessica Simpson.
Your posting system is slower now Judd or other interference?
March 19th, 2006 at 10:31 amAt least I can post on here using Mozilla Firefox! Yes Iraq has degenerated into Civil War caused by Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld! They wanted Iraq’s OIL and have destroyed that nation in the process > SHAME ON THEM!
March 19th, 2006 at 10:35 am#12- Larry,
March 19th, 2006 at 11:15 amTry defraging your hard drive. I do mine, overnight, the first Sunday of every month. The problem seems to originate in the fragmentation of memory page files and gets worse as time goes by. The memory page files get fragmented because they are competing with WEB temporary page files on an adhoc basis = first-come, first-served.
This administration has changed the definition of torture so narrowly that they can deny that they torture people. I believe that they have done the same thing with the term “civil warâ€. Unless the opposing factions in Iraq dress up in blue and gray uniforms they will continue to deny that there is a civil war in Iraq.
March 19th, 2006 at 11:15 amOf course, criticism is reserved only for those who disagree with Bush. But now that one he defended has stated the obvious - what will Bush do? He will declare that the civil war is a “good thing”, a la Fox news banner, which will hasten democracy to Iraq.
March 19th, 2006 at 11:44 amThis just in:
http://localnewsleader.com/ jackson/ stories/ index.php?action=fullnews&id=160951
Then, there is the quote from Bush:
However, Allawi is no longer the “brave leader of Iraq” and Cheney didn’t criticize Allawi, he merely disagreed with him.
So, who ya gonna trust, some one-time leader of a country in chaos or the “vice” President of the United States of America, a man whose former company is raking in billions of dollars in no-bid contracts under minimal government oversight and accountability, a man with the testicular fortitude to say “fuck you” to the United States Senate, a man who drinks beer and shoots his friend in the face?
March 19th, 2006 at 11:53 amThis is not a civil war — it is “sectarian violence”. They’re so different and plain to see. Only dummies can’t see it — the smart ones in Bush&Co can tell the difference.
March 19th, 2006 at 1:13 pm#18 – Exactly! In civil wars the opposing sides wear blue and gray uniforms and shoot cannon balls at each other.
March 19th, 2006 at 1:48 pm#18, and when you are on a Crusade to bring Christianity to Babylon, what better than to have different Muslim sects kill each other?
Or perhaps we can rephrase this as a different kind of democracy. In Iraq, you vote with your gun. Last man standing wins the election.

A poster on Free Republic has the answer!
This isn’t a “Civil War” — it’s a “social readjustment.”
There. Now we know.
March 19th, 2006 at 2:13 pmU.S. NATIONAL DEBT CLOCK

The Outstanding Public Debt as of 19 Mar 2006 at 12:37:49 PM MST is:
The estimated population of the United States is 298,816,575
so each citizen’s share of this debt is $27,703.10.
The National Debt has continued to increase an average of
$2.03 billion per day since September 30, 2005!
Concerned? Then tell Congress and the White House!

Curious where all that money went?

March 19th, 2006 at 2:42 pmIt’s too bad Allawi isn’t “in country” to know the facts for himself. The Iraqi military has made important strides in the last several months. Terror forces that love neither Sunni or Shiite are determined to wreak havoc. Battling the non-observant thugs like Zarqawi is perhaps worse than having to deal with Tories of old.
But the new liberal whine that is truly indefensible: “It’s taking them waaaaay too long to form a government.” The American History geniuses here at TP “forget” or never knew that the Constitution was not implemented until 13 years after our Revolution - and all that bickering and fighting was after the failed Articles of Confederation.
March 19th, 2006 at 3:20 pm#8 - “Now is the time to release Saddam as he is the only man to get Iraq back together. and get your troops OUT NOW and stay out , America public cannot even have a peace demonstration anymore without more than 1000 people turning up..”

*****And I suppose if Adolf and Benito had made it through WWII without committing suicide and being strung up on a light pole, the Allied forces could have used them to make sure the trains kept running on time.

March 19th, 2006 at 3:32 pmHey Mighty Moron, headquarters forgot to send you the correct briefing card. Your republican senators think you’re an idiot.
It’s been a long time since a reichwinger had credibility on any subject. Hey Mighty, how’s the search for Bin Laden coming - oh that’s right, the administration doesn’t believe catching the 9/11 mastermind is a priority…
Idiots.

March 20th, 2006 at 1:15 pmIf Iraq were in a state of civil war, shouldn’t our casualty rates be going up instead of down? Check out the rates over the last several months and you’ll see what I mean. The fact is, Iraq is not in a state of civil war and this story is the latest attempt by the left to discredit the Bush administration. We are winning in Iraq and history will again prove the left wrong.
