Cheney Defends “Greeted as Liberators” and “Last Throes” Claims As “Basically Accurate”»

This morning on Face the Nation, Cheney stubbornly defended his pre-war claim that U.S. troops would be “greeted as liberators” and his May ‘05 claim that the insurgency was “in its last throes.” Watch it:

Transcript:

SCHIEFFER: Mr. Vice President, all along the government has been very optimistic. You remain optimistic. But I remember when you were saying we’d be greeted as liberators, you played down the insurgency ten months ago. You said it was in its last throes. Do you believe that these optimistic statements may be one of the reasons that people seem to be more skeptical in this country about whether we ought to be in Iraq?

CHENEY: No, I think it has less to do with the statements we’ve made, which I think were basically accurate and reflect reality, than it does the fact that there is a constant sort of perception if you will that’s created because what is newsworthy is the carbomb in Baghdad, it’s not all the work that went on that day in 15 other provinces in terms of making progress in rebuilding Iraq.

Cheney’s cool but his mind is gone

  14. pgw Says:

i like being told about what reflects reality from someone who shot a man in the face, then got a good night’s sleep before talking to the police about it the next day.

  15. Don Says:

There’s always some hope. At the anti-war march in San Diego yesterday a woman in front of me with a pink T-shirt drew this comment from a large motorcycle policeman blocking traffic for us: “I like your shirt.”
Later, I saw the same woman and was able to see the front of her shirt. It featured a large photo of Cheney, and over it the words: WHAT A DICK

Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. #4 that’s a great question. I can’t wait to see what the trolls say……

  17. John the Elder Says:

Not only shot a man in the face, but rather then go to the hospital to see how his “good friend” was doing, went and had a glass of wine! This guy has lied with such consistency, that he wouldn’t know the truth if he tripped over. Of course he would have to give up tripping on other stuff. I seriously question how those who elected this administration with their votes, seeing what they have brought in to being, can ever sleep again in this life.

  18. johnnyr Says:

I can’t believe these assholes are still running this country, and hardly anyone in the media is questioning that simple premise: Why are these evil, criminal stupid, lying, out of touch selfish, partisan hacks allowed to keep power?

  19. Marie Says:

Cheney is basically a compulsive liar - or is he completely out of touch with reality? Are the two mutually exclusive? He has no morals, no ethics, no integrity; he has liberated his conscience, his sanity is in its last throes. And that is what’s basically accurate.
This reprobate is in charge, folks.

  27. British Gary Says:

Cheney is anything but insane. He knows exactly what he is doing. Look at Cheney’s comments about Iraq and Saddam under Bush 1 vs. comments under Bush2. Cheney is a neoconservative liar who will do and say ANYTHING to further his own cause financially and politically. I think it has MORE to do with the statements I’ve made, which I think are basically accurate and reflect reality.

  28. Vance Says:

Of course this man and this administration lie….First they told us Iraq was trying to build WMD…….Now they tell us Iraq cant even build its own IED’s, they need to get them from Iran.

  29. green917 Says:

#4 - Steve, excellent question. There’s a larger issue at play in the Sadaam Hussein trial though that I have questions about also. Sadaam is being tried for the killing of 170+ dissidents that were thought to have been involved in an assassination attempt against him. Why isn’t he on trial for ordering the chemical attack in Halabja (which killed thousands) when he is on record as having ordered the attack? Could it have anything to do with the fact that our government sold him the precursor chemicals used in that attack and they don’t want the potential negative publicity? At any rate, excellent question…I too am interested to see the trolls’ response to it.

  30. Warner/Clark 08 Says:

Great question Steve. Here is another I have not heard, maybe because it is impossible to answer. But I think it can shoot a hole in one of the war whores arguments, including Cheney this morning.

My son, a 2 tour Iraq war vet, asked me this question.

War supporters say Sadaam killed hundreds of thousands during his reign. Do you think a contained, disarmed Sadaam would be responisble for more death in Iraq than those who have died by this war.

    Makes me a proud PaPa!!!!!

  33. Marie Says:

Excuse the slightly off topic, but related:
I just saw Brzezinski on Blitzer’s Sunday show - this is more evidence of how the “opposing” voices are treated on television.
Brzezinski mentioned the “Mission Accomplished” of three years ago, and Blitzer firmly and quickly corrected him, saying those words were on the banner, and not what Bush said.
I have not always been in agreement with Brzezinski, although at this time I am in agreement, but I was stunned by how quickly a misstatement was trounced because it was not entirely accurate, but words by Bush&Co are seldom, if ever challenged, but instead, enhanced, repeated, and treated as fact.

  35. Cyra Brown Says:

Perhaps, at the very beginning, there were some who decided to give us the benefit of the doubt, but when we transformed from “Liberators” to “Occupiers”, they had no cause to welcome our presence in their country. And rightly so. But he clearly has no connection with reality, regarding his “last throes” nonsense. Wishing won’t make it so. Maybe he could define his version of “last throes” so we might understand what in the hell he is babbling on about. His undeniable ignorance of military matters, and giving Rummy free rein and letting him conduct his “experimental” “New Military” war plan, in spite of all of the cautionary information, and suggestions from people with actual EXPERIENCE in battle, and fighting in Iraq. All waved aside, and the “vocal” ones were disposed of, and then attacked by BushCo. Just because Cheney says it, that does not make it true. He looks stupid, by clinging to these obvious lies. And that is fine by me !!

  41. Dem02020 Says:

#17 That’s a favorite definition among recovering alcoholics too, and many think that the President and Vice President both fit the profile, although only the VP for sure still drinks (and occasionally shoots somebody in the face as a result).

#23 Those indeed are the names of the spirits that inhabit these men’s bodies; although it is more easy to identify them by the names of Greed and Anger and Hatred: Not exactly the endearing qualities we’d like to see in our leaders, unless it is those other-named spirits you wish to follow and serve.

#24 The Dr. Strangelove reference is dead-on accurate. At another site, somebody transcribed a broadcasted dialogue this week between Chris Matthews, Pat Buchanan, and Dana Milbank, where they discussed a ‘pre-emptive’ strike against Iran; not in the sense of why such a thing should happen, or even what impact it would have on the people or places destroyed by such a thing, but purely in the sense of it’s Political Value to the President, should he order such a ’strike’; and they seemed to agree that it would have a (Political) “rallying effect”, that Buchanan’s exact words were “Sure, you’d get right up the polls. Just like, you’d go right up, you’d win the election”: All of which read so surreal, as to make me think of Dr. Strangelove, where in the War Room they discuss millions of casualities in a ’strike’ as “getting your hair mussed”. Anyway, life is stranger than fiction, and Dr. Strangelove is a funny movie, because it’s true.

AS TO THE GENERALLY FOOLISH TONE TO THE VICE PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS, and specifically to taking issue with his otherwise fantastic pre-war predictions (and the incredible ‘pre-war intelligence’):

Why do those who interview the Vice President at a time such as this (the three year mark) focus on an idiot’s (or a liar’s) “optimism”?

Certainly pre-war “optimism” is no greater a sin than, say, pre-marriage “optimism”, or even pre-employment “optimism”; who cares just how “optimistic” an idiot (or a liar) was before he took the Vows, or the Job, or pitched a War; such stuff as that just gives the idiot (or the liar) the opportunity to discuss such “optimism” as a matter of “perception”, after the Marriage breaks up, or the Job is lost or quit, or the War is so unpopular. Which is what the idiot (or the liar) did in the above-transcript, he turned it into a matter of “perception”.

WELL SCREW MATTERS OF PERCEPTION! HOW ABOUT THE MATTERS OF FALSE ‘PRE-WAR INTELLIGENCE’, AND OF OBJECTIVES THAT SHIFT WITH THE POLITICAL WINDS, AND AN AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO ARE GETTING RIGHT-TIRED OF HAVING SMOKE BLOWN UP THEIR…

As you all know, the Original Objective of invading Iraq was, according to H.J.Res. 114:

The President is authorized to use the Armed Forces of the United States as he determines to be necessary and appropriate in order to defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq

…and while many things can be said about what exactly it was that made the Administration portray Iraq as a continuing threat, the fact of the matter is that national security was the stated Objective to that Resolution and to this invasion and occupation of Iraq; and seeing as no such continuing threat posed by Iraq was ever true in the first place, then no such national security concern can be true now.

And if the Objectives of this invasion and occupation of Iraq are in fact based not at all on the National Security concerns of the American People (and are in fact based on the lies and falsifications of the Administration’s ‘pre-war intelligence’), then why can’t our Public Dialogue on this matter (on this 3 year anniversary) stay focused on that; STAY FOCUSED ON THE OBJECTIVES of an invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Which is nothing the President or the Vice President can talk about, and justify as involving National Security, and still somehow evade the question of ‘pre-war intelligence’…

…and so we get talk of “optimism” and “perception”, from an idiot (or a liar).

    Or both.

  42. Badmoodman Says:

And Schieffer cowered from Cheney like a Democrat during election time. I wish they’d bring out the relic of Walter Cronkite, or even Mike Wallace, to do an interview with Cheney and let the Veep spout that BS to them. They’d eviscerate Cheney.

  43. Jeffrey Stewart Says:

The huge question is: Did the moderator challenge Mr. Cheney’s assertions. And, if not, why not?

  44. banana Says:

the accurate defintiion of a “titty baby” are people who are willing to spend millions of american taxpayer dollars to investigate the extramarital affairs of Bill Clinton becausehe “lied” about it to avoid embarrassment and the wrath of Hillary, yet don’t find it compelling to investigate the LIES told by Bush and Cheney which have resulted in the deaths of over 2000 soldiers and hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians.

Now where are your statistics that more Americans have died “in American streets” in the past three years vs. the number of Iraqis that have died from “missed target” bombings and other things?

oh and my extra two cents: the accurate defintion of a “cheater” is someone who thinks that Diebold is a-ok.

  45. wisedup Says:

Questions not asked: (help me add to the list folks))

‘How much money have you personally made from the war, mr cheney?’
‘Are any of your family members fighting in the war?’
‘What is the number of people that have died since the war has began?’
‘How much money has been spent on the war so far,mr cheney?
‘Were you drinking BEFORE you shot your friend mr cheney?’
‘How much TAXPAYER money have you spent flying around the country for 5 years now going to ‘republicaln fund raisers?’

  46. Nova16 Says:

Cheney is the consummate war mongerer and profiteer. He has made millions just by drinking at the public trough. America is cursed with a plague. It is called the republican party. The real downside to the lies, deceit, and chicanery visited upon the American people is that the dolt in the White House and the corrupt congress have three(3)more years of mischief ahead. The majority of Americans now know they have been duped and deceived by this administration by involving us in a meaningless war and squandering the treasury. America may never recover.

  47. banana Says:

#49 why were you spend Valentine’s Day weekend with another woman who was not your wife?

  48. Nova16 Says:

I re-read Cheney’s response to Shieffer. That is the most obtuse, disjointed, incompetent reply that he has ever made. Unless his vernacular includes expletives or profanity, his ability to communicate effectively is impaired. Can anyone make sense of his comment to the CBS reporter?

  49. Jackie Rawlings Says:

Cheney is working hard for Halliburton who is stealing oil rights from the middle east and he will continue to lie as long as he’s making money. Cheney is blaming everyone from the media to the Iraq people. This is a man on the edge and he could pop at anytime but he will never thing of the American people first becaue he came into office for one thing and that was the give taxpayers money to big business and Halliburton and he is doing that job very well. Even the middle east leaders say Iraq is in a civil war yet Bush/Cheney/Rummy say what we see, what they say isn’t happening. No other country is involved in this mess and even Britian is leaving so has any supporter of the Bush Administration ever asked where’s the rest of the world leaders and why aren’t they supportive. Answer Bush told the US, UN and the media that the United States will go it alone and Iraq doesn’t have to pay back any money that the US spent during this invasion.

  50. Innocent Bystander Says:

    Dick Cheney-

World-class war profiteer/world-class war criminal. In a just world, he and Rummy would be on trial with Saddam explaining why selling him chemical weapons in the 80s was such a great idea.

How many millions has Dick made in making war while in the public sector, getting rebuilding contracts in the private sctor, and then returning to the public sector to make war yet again? He’s done quite well off the deaths and miseries of the Iraqi people.

  51. Innocent Bystander Says:

  59. Geoff Says:

Im with plunger. Either Cheney is completely out of touch with reality, meaning he should be removed from office for incompetence, or he is the biggest fucking liar on the planet, and on top of that is making huge bank by perpetuating this BS upon the American People. However you look at it, he should be removed from office and belongs either in a mental institution if he believes the crap he is peddling, or in jail if he does not. The fact that perpetuating this war has allowed him to profits from his stock options that are greater than the annual earnings of 90% of the electorate combined, over the past three years, is just sickening.

  60. Geoff Says:

And one more thing, which has pissed me off forever about this creep. What is it with the “if you will” little phrase that he throws into almost every other sentence? Can anyone tell me what the fuck this means? Everytime I hear it, the first thing that comes to mind is, “NO, I WONT!” because it typically is weaved into a convoluted sentence that is primarily formed out of some non-reality BS. Is this a verbal sense, or is it some way of wrangling out of any of his statements later on in life when he is in front of a grand jury?

  61. Geoff Says:

replace above sense in #65 with “tic”

  62. katy Says:

geoff - it took a while, but i found something interesting… i was curious about cheney’s favorite over-used phrase myself … this may help, even if yours was just a rhetorical question -

and this is funny: “What follows is a collection of words and phrases that, after noticing how dumb they make people sound, I am striving to avoid using myself:…”If you will” & “per se” - No, thank you. I will not.”
so, i was bored, but now bored with this…can’t find a definitive source for “if you will” at this time…so much for off topic triviality…

the thing that’s beautiful about all the “illegal” immigrants comin to america, is that it’s the central and south americans who know how to rock the streets during the revolution. i welcome them withopen arms to come and help us to do the same here.

i’m convinced that the only way to change things is to be relentless in rocking the streets. not just a “once a year anniversary memorial” but a day and night 24-7 of rocking the streets.

and the mexicans can teach us how.

i marched with them during the immigrant worker freedom ride a couple years ago, and it was a wonderul feeling.

the reason why i put “illegal” in front of immigrants, is that I don’t believe they’re illegal. most of them have indigenous ancestry, indigenous to this part of the world, which is (by the looks of it) more than what lou dobbs can say about his.

    36- “We’re all neo-cons now.” (MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, 4/9/03)

Truth in advertising is so rare these days. Where did I misplace that “liberal media” again? Hmmm…

  86. David Says:

46- I don’t think Cheney can get within sight of Cronkite or (Mike!) Wallace. You know, that whole vampires and daylight thing.

  87. Zimzone Says:

Cheney & Murtha squaring off toether would have been really entertaining,
but that would amount to ‘real’ news, & Cheney won’t have any of the eh?
I think 15 rounds in a parking lot with Murtha would put an end to the
warmongering 6 deferrment VP who ‘didn’t have time for the military’ when
    he was draft eligible.

  88. freedom is making leaps and bounds Says:

Let us all preach to the choir! Let us not forget that The Commander in Chief said that God told him to run for president, and the God told him to liberate Iraq, and that God loves freedom-fries!! Thank God that He is on our side!

  89. rMatey Says:

The truth, as told by Dick “Duck!” Cheney. What a hoot. This is one guy who kept getting extensions on military deferments to keep from fighting himself. So now he kills 70 to 80 birds in a day. A real crack shot. The birds are set out just before the hunt. Just like shooting them in a barrel….. Big Mighty Hunter. I guess he just needs to kill something to relax.

  90. rMatey Says:

OBTW, those Freedom Fries were brought to you by Representative #1 - still in it for the money.

    Wisedup (#49.)
Your first question is the killer

‘How much money have you personally made from the war,Mr Cheney?’

I have been wondering about that for a long time, and this leads on very logically to comments by plunger (#39),and once again,I am in complete agreement. It is said that the US is litigation crazy, but I for one sure would welcome a concerted attempt to hit these bastards in the wallet, and hard, and I am of the mind these days that taking the main players in the PNAC(Permanent Negation of American Credibility/Peace,Not A Chance…..) war machine to the financial cleaners is even OK as a gesture of blatant vengeance.

Of course, that would be IN ADDITION to the Impeachment of the Presidunce for his knowingly false references to WMD in the SOTU,AND his “I Am The Law” approach to Warrantless Wiretapping,AND the utter incompetence which he has exercised in domestic affairs,(Instead of having all that talk about government being small enough to drown in a bathtub, couldn’t we have expected that it would have at least been big enough to have prevented the City of New Orleans from drowning in The Gulf Of Mexico ??),AND that crap about Saddam’s alleged role in 911,AND all the other wilful misinformation(aka LIES) over why the war,how goes it and so on.Then of course one could look at Dubya’s frittering away of national resources,(and thereby the increasing of the National Debt) by giving his pals their tax cuts in a similar light to the greasing of the way for Halliburton and all the other repug Cronies.Perhaps you might wish to leave some of the rest for the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague(the Unconstitutionality and Illegality inherent in the waging of aggressive war, without UN Security Council approval,oh,yes, and then of course there is the Issue of the Geneva Convention Breaking,UNHCR Ignoring activities in Gitmo/Abu G/Camp Nama, along with various other European and Middle East locations-Secure and VERY Undisclosed-stories of which are somewhat unclear at present, but I am sure the truth will out in time).

I would imagine that for some, participation in such atrocities does eventually prey on the conscience,(if you have one),and I am not sure that all of those currently of the mind to stay silent, will remain that way, whether the system as a whole keeps its dirty secrets or not, there will always be those who are prepared, once their guilt and indignation exceeds their fear or their misplaced sense of “Duty”,to do the decent thing and go public.

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. - Thomas Jefferson

I have been thinking for a while that the resistance to the catalogue of atrocities, deceptions, death and destruction these assholes have wrought in the US and abroad,is a long time coming,at least from the “Opposition” party.FULL CREDIT AND RESPECT,therefore to Russell Feingold, and anyone else who is prepared to make a principled and courageous stand in any way.Sure,we all know that there will be no censure, that on that point,it is very likely that Sen.Feingold will lose, but WHAT there is to gain ?In showing that at least one Democrat is not prepared to stand by and let the NeoCon crazies and criminals pass unchallenged,Sen.Feingold is sending a message out to all who would resist Bushco.JUST DO IT.

As Jane Hamsher opined in her article No Surprise:Poll Shows Feingold’s Popularity Soaring(Huffington Post 17/3)

“Russ Feingold looks pretty damn good for having been the only one to vote against the Patriot Act, and a year hence he (and co-sponsors Barbara Boxer and Tom Harkin) will look even better for having stepped out in the forefront of this because the corruption and mismanagement are only going to become more painfully obvious as the details are unearthed over time.

The question is — who’s going to look good for having stood with him?”

In saying all this though, there is the corollary that the Democrats need to take a swift reality check here. Why are there only 32 names on the motion to Impeach? What is wrong with you guys? What do the Bushies need to do to persuade you that enough is enough, and motivate you to do anything and everything within your capabilities to take this asshole and his cronies down?I sincerely believe that the Democratic Party has,at this juncture, nothing to lose and everything to gain by pursuing a bold campaign based on exposing the problem(as if it needs further exposition),and making firm and credible commitments towards resolving it,and for the number of Dems who supported the war originally,I doubt if any of your supporters or voters would castigate you for now admitting a mistake,or even pointing out that the basis for the decision was a false statement by the Chimp.Either way,the thing which will cause the worst difficulties would be for the Dems NOT to establish a distance between their party, and the activities of their Nation’s Administration these last five years,Vote For Impeachment Now.As Jane Hamsher points out,no one needs to check which way the wind is blowing on this, and surely prevarication here is a much greater danger than boldness.

Being liberal means one is for civil liberties, equality, social justice,fairness…..How can someone be too liberal?” Dr. P.Z. Myers

Look at the Polls, and tell me how much easier the GOP could make it for you.Tap into the rising tide of discontent which will hopefully wash away the GOP majority in the November Congressional Elections.Bush & Co’s approval ratings are going through the floor,he is out of step with the people,BIG STYLE,and even with sections of his own party.

Make the connection with the majority of people who currently do not share many of the views of your Government.Of these, your own supporters will be energised if they see their leaders making an honourable stand at last.Cast an eye to the expectations of the floating voter(Even if they have political consequences, many of the problems Dubya has caused himself are not of a political nature, after all this is about honour, truth, accountability, competence, the upholding of your Constitution, and even basic compliance with the Law).Show the American people that you hold strong, principled and consistent views on these issues which were so fundamental to your Founders view of the Nation, and this thing should have no difficulty snowballing into something which will cast aside, with no ceremony whatsoever, all the shit which the current White House occupancy stands for.(If in any doubt, consider the impetus given to the Peace Movement in the last 12 months or so by Cindy Sheehan). After that is done can begin the long(VERY LONG) process of recovery and repairing the damage done to your country(and theirs:Oh Why does Bush Hate America so ?)by this bunch of criminals. It will not be easy,America needs to start to move forwards, and before that it needs to cease moving backwards, but even before that,it needs to be taken under the control of those able and willing to instigate that change of direction

All of which brings me to Big Papa #89.YES YES YES.What I REALLY like about your post,BigPapa,is that it deals with the crux of the matter,as you and John in Atlanta correctly observe, this has just been a business venture for the neocons, and their crimes MUST NOT BE SEEN TO PAY.The money which has gone into Halliburton’s and thence no doubt into Cheney’s pockets was the property of the American People,to be spent on those things more necessary than war profiteering, things like
Health,Education,Medicare, maintenance of flood defences, mine safety, alternative energy etc etc,I do not need to make these points here. There is the added fact that in a nutshell,BigPapa, yours is a post which concisely reflects my own opinions over what is the solution to the bastards who are:
    1-Asset stripping your country,

2-Riding roughshod over The Constitution and The Law,

    3-Breaking The Geneva Convention,

4-Defying EVERY decent and hard fought and won piece of Human Rights legislation, whilst having the outright damned effrontery to criticise the Human Rights Records of other countries, they may sometimes be right, but hey guys,Pots and Kettles,eh ?

5-Sending other people’s children half way across the world to die for their own and their cronies war and oil profits,

    6-Neglecting basic infrastructures at home,

7-Debasing your Country and it’s name around the world,

8-Creating instability and fear in The Middle East(Just so they will always have an excuse to keep their Big Guns near all that oil),

9-Hiding behind Religion, and Patriotism to justify their twisted agenda,

10-Risking the future security of the ENTIRE PLANET by their warmongering

and all from the point of view that if things get too hot to handle, well there is always that Secure Undisclosed Location,(Even Chimpy McFlightsuit is not THAT secretive),after all why should they care ?Bush would rather ride his bike,(or has he mastered that Segway yet !!??) than give Cindy S a decent(or in fact any) answer to a perfectly fair and reasonable question. He would rather go to a Birthday Party than attend to the crisis in New Orleans.

In this world are many like me who have killed their emotions…remember that…“-Shadow,Final Fantasy VI

And a note here for those who still believe Bush as a Christian,go look at your Ten Commandments and see how many of them this administration has left unscathed.

I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just,His justice cannot sleep forever.“-Thomas Jefferson

What was that one he came out with just after 911 about it matters not whether justice is brought to the guilty,or the guilty are brought to justice…..??
