Murtha: Administration Claims Of Winning The War, Blaming The Media Repeat Vietnam-Era Mistakes

Today on Face the Nation, Vice President Cheney defended his dubious pre-war and post-war claims by blaming the media:

[T]here is a constant sort of perception if you will that’s created because what is newsworthy is the carbomb in Baghdad, it’s not all the work that went on that day in 15 other provinces in terms of making progress in rebuilding Iraq.

On Meet the Press, Tim Russert asked Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) about the administration’s repeated attempts to blame the media. Watch it:

Transcript:

RUSSERT: Some in the administration say the media is distorting the good news that’s coming out of Iraq.

MURTHA: They said the same thing about Vietnam. They said the same thing over and over and over about Vietnam. They said we’re winning the war in Vietnam. You could go back and get quotes from Vietnam and you’ll see the same kind of reports. The media is the one that’s distorting. Everything is going fine in Vietnam. Well, everything is not going fine in Iraq. They have to realize it. When the whole world is against you, when our international reputation has been diminished so substantially, when all the countries in the region say we’d be better off without us being in Iraq, when the people themselves in Iraq say — and American people say it, I mean, who is right?

I watched it and Murtha tells the truth…timmy fires questions, murtha has the real answers, it was great.

Gonna have to check the repeat at 9pm tonight. I hate that the three major news shows are all on at the same time in my area. Sounds like I will be pleased with the Murtha interview on the MTP program tonight – Russert is more and more like Matthews, and I want to see Murtha fire back.

Of course, what you say with links, etc. is factual, but we are stymied in implementing the law against this cabal. We need the government which has been bribed and otherwise corrupted. We need the media, which has also been purchased and corrupted. Short of that, we can only remove the unwilling, the cowardly and the corrupt politicians beginning in November and start to turn this nation back on track.

  4. Pamela says:

Thank God I saw Murtha first. I would not have been able to make it thru the vp, the difference in the 2 is staggering. Tim was pretty good in my impression,we still do not know how this will end, but I’m willing to bet they will be several books come out after it’s over.

  5. katy says:

marie – i cannot watch MTP because timmy’s knitted brow infuriates me – my sunday a.m. ritual is cbs’ Sunday Morning – from the wynton marsalis trumpet intro to the nature’s beauty finale, most of what is covered is human interest and cultural issues – a real treat from the usual doom and gloom/lies of the other shows…but i’ll check on timmy’s brow during a commercial break; otherwise i leave it to TP and Crooks at al, to show me what is relavent of the sunday shows…

by the way – this morning i learned that a Pompeii exhibit is at the Field museum…would like to check that out!

We were and only the enemy in place within our country kept us from finishing the communists and saving the lives of 2 million people who died after the Filthy Left made us cut and run. LBJ could have totally destroyed N. Vietnam and their Red Chinese allies. Why didn’t he? The communists and communist sympathizers inside our government, media and colleges. McCarthy was right and because we failed to act in the 50’s and hand the bastards the cold war drug on costing billions of dollars and millions of lives and even today the communist threat from Red China hangs over our heads. All because of communists inside the Democratic Party. The Party of Treason, Baby Killing and Homosexuality.

This country will never be safe as long as the Filthy Left is allowed to operate inside our government and institutions.

Murtha is a senile old fucktard and should be committed or jailed for collaborating with our enemy.

  10. Dem02020 says:

THERES THAT WORD PERCEPTION AGAIN, in the first quote offered in this item, as spoken by one who wishes to otherwise convince you that things are not as they seem, and that your opinion on the matter is simply the result of some “perception”, good or bad, some “perception” that you’re laboring under…

…and the man says these things without swinging a watch to and fro’ before your eyes, and without saying “your getting sleepy, sleeeepy…”

But its the same Hypnotic Bull nevertheless, “perception”.

AS FAR AS THE FAR MORE CRISP AND SHARP TALK OF A NATION’S “OBJECTIVE” to an invasion and occupation of Iraq:

    From a Reuters item, dated March 19, 2006, titled…

US Objectives in Iraq Prove Elusive

[Paragraphs 2-4] President George W. Bush’s stated rationale for invading in March 2003 — ridding Iraq of weapons of mass destruction — quickly proved illusory. No such arms were ever found.

Three years later, as bodies are dumped daily on the streets of Baghdad and civil war is very possible, longer term U.S. ambitions for a stable and democratic Iraq also seem shaky, experts say.

“It’s quite clear, the United States did not achieve its objectives in Iraq” because they were “fundamentally wrong,” said Anthony Cordesman, a former Pentagon official who once worked for Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

[Paragraph 7] Although U.S. officials remain upbeat about Iraq’s prospects, public opinion polls show deep division among ordinary Americans. Bush’s popularity has sunk to its lowest point in his six years in office, support for keeping U.S. troops in Iraq has plummeted and there is deepening concern about Iraq’s future.

[Paragraph 12] Yet in the run-up to war, Bush and his foreign policy team — one of the most experienced in modern U.S. history — were warned repeatedly — by allies, experts and other U.S. officials — about the difficulties Iraq presented.

…now, if that sounds like the stuff that dreams (or “perceptions”) are made of, I’d be surprised.

It’s all about the REAL lies and falsified ‘pre-war intelligence’ that the Administration used to convince the American People and their Congress as to a $450 billion dollar invasion and occupation of Iraq (that’s REAL money, that really went somewhere, to the Defense Contractors that these liars are the Business Agents for).

It’s all about the REAL Objectives of an invasion and occupation of any nation whatsoever, which can only be National Security to the United States…

…which was the lie told up front by this Administration to the American People and their Congress…

…lies and false ‘pre-war intelligence’ that continue to go uninvestigated…

…an Objective that continues to be spun and evaded, to this three year anniversary day.

It’s not a matter of “perception”.

Hummmh. Sounds like history, ala Bush speak.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it the Republican President, Richard Nixon, who was elected on a platform promising victory and to find “Peace with Honor” then cut and run a few years later, letting Saigon and South Vietnam fall?

I mean, Tricky Dick is the president who was elected in 1968 and set up the Nixon Doctrine in Vietnam. In 1972 he was reelected with a mandate defeating anti-war candidate Sen. McGovern. A year later, the war was completely lost under his leadership and diplomacy. Sorry, I-RIGHT-I, no commies or democrats were in charge during the last 5 years of the Vietnam War. Once again, I-RIGHT-I is using bullshit stories, with no facts to back it up to try and change the subject, which is the fact that IRAQ IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CIVIL WAR AND THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION IS TRYING TO “FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO”

    Telegraph
    March 19, 2006
Rumsfeld: We’re trying to figure out what to do if Iraq falls into civil war

America has begun making plans to deal with a civil war in Iraq, three years after the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

As sectarian violence continues to claim lives every day, Donald Rumsfeld, the American defence secretary, has disclosed that United States military intelligence is holding war games to predict what might happen in such a situation.

But, Rumsfeld must not have gotten his Karl Rove talking points this morning:

    Ruetters
    March 19, 2006
Cheney: Iraq not in civil war, predicts success

Vice President Dick Cheney on Sunday said Iraq had not fallen into civil war despite extremist attempts to foment one, and predicted success despite the constant violence.

Three years after the U.S. invasion, the violence in Iraq continues unabated with bombings, killings and kidnappings.

Did Cheney just call Rumsfeld an extremist?

How about if we see what the Bush administrations propped up former Prime Minister has to say.

    Associated Press
    March 19, 2006
Allawi Says Iraq in Middle of Civil War

Iraq is in the middle of a civil war, former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi said in a TV interview aired Sunday. His comments were immediately rejected by Britain’s defense secretary.

Allawi told the British Broadcasting Corp. there was no other way to describe the increasing violence across the country.

“It is unfortunate that we are in civil war. We are losing each day as an average 50 to 60 people throughout the country, if not more,” Allawi told the BBC. “If this is not civil war, then God knows what civil war is.”

I-RIGHT-I is nothing more than a blind uninformed asswipe that doesn’t deserve our time.

#10: another unsupported hit-and-run post by IRI.

#20. If you follow the story you will find this gem:

the preference for Democrats among at least some of the companies has to do with the ideology of a few generous soft money donors. Viacom, for example, gave about four-fifths of its money to Democrats in the 2002 election cycle. But 56 percent of the company’s contributions to Democrats came from Robert Johnson, founder of Viacom subsidiary Black Entertainment Television. Similarly, nearly 35 percent of the money given to Democrats from Vivendi Universal came from just two powerful donors: the late Lew Wasserman, who was chairman emeritus of Universal Studios until his death last June, and Edward Bronfman, head of Vivendi subsidiary Seagram.

    and:

June 02, 2003 | The nation’s largest media companies gave more than $26 million in individual, PAC and soft money contributions and spent more than $82 million on federal lobbying between 1999 and 2002, the Center has found. With a heavily anticipated Federal Communications Commission vote scheduled today on several proposals to relax media ownership rules, these corporations will be watching intently to see whether their political investments pay off.

If passed, the new FCC rules would raise caps on the number of television stations a network can own and ease restrictions on cross-ownership of newspapers and TV and radio stations. Critics of the proposed changes, including the FCC’s two Democratic commissioners, say easing restrictions will encourage further consolidation in an industry already controlled by a handful of companies. Proponents of the new rules, including FCC Chairman Michael Powell and his two Republican colleagues on the commission, say the changes are needed given the popularity of cable TV and the Internet. The commission is expected to approve the rules this morning.

No wonder IRI does not support his posts with links and background information.

  40. Briseadh na Faire says:

#36, from the link you posted:

But in a little-noticed white paper submitted by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to Congress on January 19 justifying the legality of the NSA eavesdropping, Justice Department lawyers made a tacit case that President Bush also has the inherent authority to order such physical searches. In order to fulfill his duties as commander in chief, the 42-page white paper says, “a consistent understanding has developed that the president has inherent constitutional authority to conduct warrantless searches and surveillance within the United States for foreign intelligence purposes.” …. John Martin, a former Justice Department attorney who prosecuted the two most important cases involving warrantless searches and surveillance, says the department is sending an unambiguous message to Congress. “They couldn’t make it clearer,” says Martin, “that they are also making the case for inherent presidential power to conduct warrantless physical searches.”

Hey, don’t blame Cheney for not remembering the lessons of the Viet Nam war. He was too busy humping through the hot, wet jungle with his squad in ‘67, his rippling muscles sheened with sweat as he hefted his M-60 pig, bandoliers of ammo slung over his shoulders in a shiny bronze X. “Born To Kill” and a Confederate battle flag carefully executed with Magic Marker on his Marine issue steel helmet, a pack of Marlboros and a vial of insect repellant tied on it using a rope carefully wound from the hair of his last 50 confirmed Charlie kills.

NOT. The only lesson Cheney learned from the VietNam war was how to successfully receive at least 5 deferments: “I had other priorities in the ’60s other than military service,” Cheney told a reporter in 1989.

The media is right about Iraq (it’s a disaster) but was wrong about vietnam. The Tet offensive was reported in the US media as a massive disaster for the United States. But it was exactly what the United States wanted. It was the first time the vietcong guerrillas came out of hiding en masse, and even the North Vietnamese regulars seldom met the US out in such mass before that. As you well know, when an enemy meets the US on the battle field conventionally, en masse, they get obliterated. That’s exactly what happened during the Tet offensive. But the press spun it as only a huge disaster. Yes it was a huge disaster, but it was also an opurtunity to win. The vietcong in South Vietnam took years to rebuild.

    Victor Davis Hanson writes:
[....... he [General Westmoreland] was accurate in his belief that thousands of enemy VIetnamese were now more likely to be in the open, vulnerable, and shortly to be annihalated. The entire effort of Westmoreland’s previous three years in Vietnam had been to create the conditions of traditional Western decisive battle, in which the Americans military might draw on its wonderfullfully trained and disciplined shock infantry and enormous technological and material superiority to blast apart the enemy and go home.]
Carnage and Culture: Land-Mark Battles in the Rise of Western Power (page 392)

Here is an example of Vietnam era press bias. You’ve all heard of the 100 civilians massacred at Mai Lei right? How many of you have heard that in the aftermath of the Tet offensive, 3,000 bodies of South Vietnamese civilians, Americans, and other foriegners clubbed or shot to death in Hue? Not many huh?

The US strategy of attrition (get the VC units to commit to battle and kill more of them than they could of us) worked during the Tet offensive. The VC was effectively destroyed and in subsequent action, the US faced NVA troops.
The Pentagon figured out that without an actual invasion of the north and the risk of Chinese involvement, they couldn’t win against a country willing to absorb the losses we inflicted. The invasion would also have to entail invading Laos and Cambodia (further than the forays that were done) and the leadership simply wasn’t willing to go that far.
The media didn’t cause the loss in VN,the strategy of limited involement defeated us.

I agree with you, but the media’s influence on public opinion had to have somewhat helped keep US involvement limited. But yes, I’m sure involvement would have stayed pretty limited with a biased press or not, because Americans just plain hate losing thier children in foriegn adventures.

I’m a little old to go to war with 20 year olds but if push comes to shove I could get it done. I may have to from the looks of the kind of kids you losers have raised. (I assume that if you’re not a parent you’re one of the Gen Y losers who should be deported or put into work camps.

It seems we have a country of fat stupid chickenshits, Among the reasons why Gen Y isn’t measuring up:
    Not enough high-school graduates.
    Obesity.
    Not physically fit enough.
A drug habit—and less we think that it’s pot, it isn’t: if you’ve taken Ritalin or a similar behavior-modifier in the past year, Uncle Sam does not want you. Tattoos—most notably, gang insignia, facial and anti-social ones like “Loner”, which get you quickly rejected. Severe medical problems, criminal records, in short the kind of people that wind up in prison or costing society money in other destructive ways.

Yep, I may have to do your job for you but that’s OK. If you want a job done right do it yourself. But you’ll be sorry you let me anywhere near automatic weapons and high explosives.

Push has come to shove. Enlist now. You owe it to your country to give your life for Bush’s War.

Since you talk the talk, walk the walk. Be all you can be.

And while you’re in boot camp and stationed in Iraq, tell every soldier you meet that he or she is a loser, born of loser parents and loser grandparents. Let them know how much better you are than they.

Oh, and get your kids to sign up as well. No sense in you being the only member of your family to risk getting shot or blown to bits. Your family could even be the new recruiting poster: the family that fights together, dies together. Go out in style, guns ablazing. Die a hero’s death.

Allah will reward you with 40 virgins with which to spend eternity in paradise. Being moral and pure, however, these virgins will have taken a vow of chastity for eternity.

How you’ll feel then. Because really, once you begin to advocate killing someone for your cause, you open thw flood gates for them to kill you for theirs. Didn’t we learn that on 9/11?

How about, instead of some of the inane drivel that some classes teach our young, we have courses on teaching them about the cultures of other countries – so we will then understand the world we live in, and therefore be able to anticipate and communicate with others instead of anyone blowing anything up in some testosterone driven rage? You know, education instead of aggression? It’s all the attacking that is senseless – no matter who instigated it or why (defense is another issue that I am NOT including in this statement, so don’t insert anything I didn’t).

It’s time to put your money(body) where your mouth is. I’ve seen in the news that ohter American men (and even some women) in their 40s are being sent to Iraq. So why not you? And if you’re not up to it, send your 20 year olds. Prove that you’re not just a loudmouth Chickenhawk, or else spare us your ignorant, bigoted rants.

IRI–They LOWERED the standards AND RAISED the AGE cutoff into the 40s(both your IQ and your age), So don’t give us that bs about being too old, too unfit, etc. You’ve been shooting off your big fat chickenhawk mouth about veterans who say it’s time to get out of Iraq, calling antiwar vets traitors and cowards, etc. Well shit-for-brains, I don’t see YOUR fucking ass in the army. Rush Limbaugh claimed a deferment for a pilonidal cyst- BULLFUCKINGSHIT! In the service, I personally changed the bandages of GIs with that malady- they were treated and returned to duty. I got my medals with no small thanks to the draft, but I did NOT desert my unit like Bush, or hid behind phoney deferments like Cheney, Ashcroft, Rush, or others. Like I said in an earlier post, DON’T EVER CALL A VETERAN A TRAITOR OR COWARD, IT IS YOU FUCKING ASSWIPES WHO ARE THE COWARDS AND TRAITORS. if I met you in person and you called me that, I would rip your fucked up head of yours off and shit down your neck.

#80: “invade their country, kill their leaders and convert the rest to Christianity.”

Sorry to let facts get in the way, but we did invade their country. We did kill their leaders. And we did let them instill ISLAM as their STATE RELIGION. Read the new Iraq Constitution.

But I guess it is ok, in your view, to have a State Religion, so long as it is Christianity. You would have outlawed the beliefs of many of our founding fathers. Washington and Jefferson, to name two, were students of the Enlightenment. Their beliefs were closer to contemporary Paganism than the mainstream Christianity of their day.

If you are the model of what it is to be a Christian, what does that say about Christ’s teachings? Are we to convert everybody into a religion of intolerance, bigotry and hatred? Is that what it means to be a Christian?

Christ did not wish to kill nor incarcerate those who did not choose to follow Him, yet you do. I see no congruence between the message in your posts and the message of The Sermon on the Mount.

You might want to think about the image of Christ you are projecting.
