The Poison Pill: McCain’s Secret Effort To Scuttle Lobbying Reform

McCain talks tough on lobbying reform. From Fox News Sunday, 1/22/06:

[L]obbying is out of control. But the reason why the lobbying is out of control is because of the process, the system that prevails here on Capitol Hill… We need to have the lobbying reform. We need to close those loopholes.

Behind the scenes, however, he is undermining efforts for meaningful lobbying reform in the Senate:

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., quietly submitted an amendment to the lobbying reform bill on the Senate floor March 9 that would cap donations to 527 groups… McCain’s move was a surprise, given that several senators had explicitly agreed to keep controversial 527 provisions out of the lobbying debate…Even pro-reform activists, who endorse tough new restrictions on 527 organizations, have testified that the 527 debate should be handled separately. They argue that dragging in 527-related provisions would complicate and undermine the lobbying reform effort.

McCain’s efforts to sideline lobbying reform by adding the “poison pill” of 527 regulation coincide with a aggressive push to raise money from lobbyists on K Street. Just a coincidence, I’m sure.

Is this really a surprise? McCain is no different from the rest of the scumbags. The guy showed his true colors when he remained quiet while they were sliming his family in South Carolina. Party first – to hell with the country.

  2. trueblue says:

What are the chances of the press picking up this story and reporting it in the papers or TV news? Pretty damn slim, I expect. Then the bastard will run for President touting his “tough stance” on Lobby Reform.
Sneaky, back-handed, self serving, the whole lot of them. I’m just disgusted.

The basic value to assess in anything the repubs do is weather it provides for a level playing field. The repubs have worked hard to make it impossible for the Dems to be politically competitive. The results have been significant. They control the WH, congress, the courts and the media and electronic voting machines! The have control of hot button issues of abortion, school prayer, religion in governement, boarder control and terrorism. WHY would they now give up any turf to make the playing field level? If an elected official has an “R” in their identification, they are going to be true to the GOP. There is a lot of priviate corporate money eager to keep the status quo. Don’t expect any repub to find the “religion” of fairness any time soon.

527’s are one of the only ways left for labor unions to contribute significantly to political candidates. The rethugs fear labor unions perhaps more than anything else. (Such is why they constantly attack them).

527’s are also used to benefit rethug candidates (The swiftboaters?)- But the overwhelming majority are constructed to benefit dems. These proposed caps aren’t surprising to myself at least.

    Divided we fall

Ah come on. You’re just pissed because your side didn’t think of it first. That’s what happens when your left wing braintrust gets old, dies or defects to the other side and all you’ve got left to work with are NEA trained fucktards…yourself excluded of course….

  14. Jack says:

Yes, McCain is a huge disappointment. He was a Jay Leno awhile back, and some of the things he said were odd and uncomfortable. You wanted to be with him, but it was more like laughing with grandpa who’s a little odd these days, but you don’t want to hurt his feelings. It was like a light would come on in his head, his eyes widened because he remembered something he was probably coached on (maybe by a Rover), and then would blurt it out; sometime it was a non sequitur.

Another very distasteful moment in what we thought were good Republicans was when Bob Doyle came out punching against John Kerry, along with the Swift Boaters. I’m not even sure Doyle believed what he was saying.

Does this prove everyone has a price they attach to their soul, or maybe we are now seeing them for who they really are.

The days of Mr. Smith gone to Washington are long gone, and being a politician isn’t as noble a profession as we’d like to think. Most politicians, especially these days, are not very nice people unfortunately – to do and say the things they do, as public servants.

Whether it is baseball or politics, it really isn’t how you play the game, but that you win at all costs.

Hmmm… Based on your ‘analysis’, this makes Rush a bad judge of character more than ‘unlucky’. After all, if you could spot what a ‘bitch’ the woman was in a few seconds, and you’re as dumb as a post, how stupid does that make Rush?

Thanks for proving that Rednecks, and Reichwingers just get more retarded by the day.

And interesting you justify drug addiction based on bad choices in relationships – it explains why so many of you crackers are hooked on Meth and OxyContin.

  35. Mike Liveright says:

    Re: 527’s

    a) As I read the original posting McCain is not putting this provision in to deal with the 527’s but as a poison pill — And thus should be shunned.

    b) On the other hand, I think that it is we remove Bundeled money from our political system. Independent of this effort to reduce Lobbying, I would like to see more efforts to separate funding organizations from others so that Corporations, Unions, Retirement Interest groups, that have other purposes NOT be permitted to fund candidates, etc. If A person wants to support he political process they should do it directly or througt an organization that has NO other purpose.

  36. Bush Bites says:

MCCAIN’S BEEN BUSH’S B*TCH SO LONG THAT HE NOW HAS STOCKHOLM SYNDROME.

  37. NEOCONVICT says:

McCain sure loves that “firebrand” and maverick” label. In reality he’s a neocon suckup. End of story.

Now here’s one former Republican EVERYONE can get behind:

Clint Curtis is mounting a congressional bid in Florida against Tom Feeney. As many of you know, Curtis was the programmer hired by Feeney to write election-stealing software a few years back. Since then, much has happened, including the suspicious death of the Florida Inspector General Raymond Lemme looking into the matter and the total media clampdown of any serious discussion of electronic election manipulation in Florida and across the nation. Curtis, a former Republican, became so disgusted by what he saw that he became a whistleblower. The whole sordid tale is chronicled on http://www.bradblog.com.

Here’s Curtis in his own words:

My name is Clint Curtis. I am running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Florida’s 24th Congressional District. This great district is currently represented by one of the most corrupt politicians in history. Having personally attended closed-door meetings where Tom Feeney spoke candidly about his aspirations of corruption forces me to provide this district with an alternative to this man. I will need your help.

    http://www.clintcurtis.com

Curtis promises to fight for fair elections and clobber corruption. He is the ONLY candidate who will take it to the NeoCons on the issue of election fraud. And he needs our help. He’s got to raise $10K in the next two weeks to get on the ballot.

I believe Curtis may be the single most important candidate for the progressive community to promote. Please visit his web site and offer to help, donate even $5 if you can spare it, and help spread the word. It’s time to TAKE BACK AMERICA–and Mr. Curtis may be own only chance of overcoming a rigged election system.

  38. maxwell smart says:

Obama should publicly rake him over the coals for this one, in light of their heated exchange earlier this month. And yet, McCain remains a media darling. Could there be a lesson here for the Dems?

  39. molly says:

Lesson for the dems., more than likely the media won’t like you unless you are repub. calling yourself dem. I hope dems. have learned that lesson. Howard Dean would have done much better than Kerry in ‘04 because he was anti war and fiscally conservative. If dems. could see what the media is doing and vote with their gut feeling. Feingold would be our next president. Is any CEO or upper level management given the Puritan test that our candidates are? How many owners of companies are real real interested in potential management positions based on sex lives. And passing interest in ability and integrity.

  40. KEVIN SCHMIDT, STERLING VA says:

McCain always was a typical Republican. In 1998, he strong armed Reagan National Airport into craming in an extra 48 flights per week in an already over crowed flight load.

Now there is less room for error, endangering passengers and everything in the flight paths. Plus the increased noise at earlier and later times is a strain on local residents.

  41. Chris Fick says:

McCain is a phony moderate. During the 2004 campaign he praised Bush for his fiscal and military leadership. It is all just an act, McCain is a fascist just like Bush.

  42. Mme flutterbye says:

I never look at or think about McCain without remembering his cruel joke about Chelsey Clinton who at the time was just 12 or 13. That, I think, showed his true character.

  46. As I C It says:

Only one Senator voted against the patriot Act and the Iraq War, and then took a solo stand to bring Censure against the President. Senator Russ Fiengold is the Super Hero this nation needs to stop the maddness that is leading the entire world over a cliff. Could it be that the congress was dealt a serious blow by the earliest stages of the illegal spying, in effect holding them hostage with dirt.

Could it be that Senator Fiengold is the only person in the Senate that this administration doesn’t have dirt on, or could it be that whatever dirt senator Fiengold might have, he might be man enough to face it and stand up for what is seemingly still left of this once great country. You don’t have to look very deep to see this current administrations agendas are and never were in the best interest of this country or its people.. America! Wake Up! It’s Now or Never!

For all you conspiracy theorist de-bunkers, we know we now live in a Bush World and from what we’ve seen so far, we know anything is plausible, possible and probable. You know,

  47. Emily says:

This is just like McCain. He has this whole phony “moderate” image and the media kisses his booty all the time to make him look good and when the republicans have plenty of votes for something he votes against them. McCain only cares about McCain. He’ll do anything to get power and have money and influence. One minute he’s aligning himself with the “gang of fourteen” (dumbest political move in my opinion in general) and than he meets with Jerry Falwell to try to align himself for the fundie votes. McCain right now should be the canidate nobody can trust because it’s the God honest truth you can’t. If McCain thinks he’d get something and get a head in politics he’ll screw you over so fast. And I can’t believe Russ Feingold is “working” with him on lobbying reform (he talked about it last week on the “Daily Show.”) Well gee Russ now you know why the two of you’s so-called lobbying reform bill isn’t getting through. They should check out the John Kerry and Paul Wellstone lobbying bill from 1996. They were the first to tackle this out (the nation had a great article about this try to find it if you can).

  48. Emily says:

Oh and I remember reading a article about Jack Abramoff and I believe it was in a Vanity Fair issue but I’m not 100% sure and John McCain’s name popped up. McCain claimed to not know who Jack Abramoff is but now with this post from thinkprogress I’m wondering now if McCain isn’t involved with Abramoff? Isn’t he supposed to sing sometime this week before the end of the month? Abramoff of course said anyone who claims to not know him is lying. And according to this link ( http://www.perrspectives.com/blog/archives/000346.htm ) they’re going to ask all of the Bush pioneers to help McCain out and Abramoff was one of the top Bush Pioneers. Has anybody ever looked into whether or not McCain was tied to Abramoff?
