“Former first lady Barbara Bush donated an undisclosed amount of money to the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund with specific instructions that the money be spent with an educational software company owned by her son Neil.” TPM has details on Neil’s firm.

WASHINGTON — As President Bush embarks on a new effort to shore up public support for the war in Iraq, an uncle of the commander in chief is collecting $2.7 million in cash and stock from the recent sale of a company that profited from the war.
A report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission shows that William H.T. Bush collected just under $1.9 million in cash plus stock valued at more than $800,000 from the sale of Engineered Support Systems Inc. to DRS Technologies of New Jersey.
The $1.7-billion deal closed Jan. 31. Both firms have extensive military contracts.

The more reliable sources suggest that Laura was blackmailed into marrying Queen George the Dumb by the Queen Mother, the same Babs. Laura was given the choice of marriage to Junior or going to prison for manslaughter. I bet she would reconsider if she could do it over again.
March 23rd, 2006 at 3:21 pmIt appears her priorities are in the wrong order. It is kind of disgusting that her motive wasn’t to help the Katrina survivors, but her son. Isn’t Neil the one that was also the poster boy for the Savings and Loan crisis in the late 80’s. It does slap the people in the face that donated to that organization.
They need the basics like housing, shelter, jobs, and schools.
Nightline last week showed a trailer community of about 500 Katrina survivors. They are so lost and scared they basically stay locked up in their trailors all day, even the kids. The kids aren’t in school, and if they were, I’m not sure the local’s have a enough resources to accommodate all of them. Gosh, even after the Tsunami, in India, they got the kids back into normal patterns of life which was built upon going to school. And we can’t do that even?
Two people, a dentist and doctor, who help people in 3rd world countries (this is what America has come to?), were there trying to help (where are all those Christian organizations and all those funds they have received under Bush). Apple computers were donated by Apple. They were to be housed in a building donated by Rosie’s charity, but the building sat outside the premise, uninstalled because apparently FEMA wouldn’t allow it (the broadcast might have changed that).

Of course you can give a directed gift to a charity – this is doen all the time. It’s usually not so direct as to benefit your son’s company, but restricted gifts are given all the time.

yes, it’s definitely a tax break because it’s a charitable contribution. yes, it’s a conflict of interest that involves related parties, but as long as it is disclosed to the Board I really don’t think there’s anything illegal about it. Immoral, sleezy and manipulative, sure, but not illegal.
