Rice Knocks Down ‘Last Throes’: Insurgency Can Still ‘Pull Off Violence’ and Could ‘For Some Time’

Last week, Vice President Dick Cheney defended his claim that Iraq’s insurgency was in its “last throes” as “basically accurate.” Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had a different set of talking points this morning. Watch it:

RUSSERT: Is the insurgency in its last throes?

RICE: Well, the insurgency politically is certainly in danger because the Sunnis, who stood outside —

RUSSERT: But in terms of violence, is it in its last throes?

RICE: Well, the insurgency is still able to pull off violence and kill innocent children or kill an innocent school teacher, yes, they’re able to do that, and they might be able to do that for some time.

In February 2005 — three months before Cheney’s claim — insurgents were averaging 54 attacks per day. In February 2006, the average was 75 attacks per day.

These morons need to get their shit straight or we will never win. The insurgents are not trying to kill children and teachers. They are trying to kill the Iraqi forces and the Iraqi police. Because they are insurgents.

The people trying to kill teachers/kids and destroy infrastructure are call terrorists. Terrorists uswe fear and intimidation to cause terror. Because they are terrorists.

Don’t forget:What is the definitaion of “terrorist”?

[obviously a strained justification for a continued occupation...]

ME: And so that’s why U.S. Troops invaded, and continue to occupy, Iraq? I thought it was because of the FALSIFIED ‘pre-war intelligence’ that portrayed Iraq as a National Security threat to the U.S., when it was not. So now we’re there to prevent an “insurgency” from “pulling off violence”?

Could the members of this Administration please get their ever-shifting objectives in Iraq straight! [that's ME again...]

Anything that Condi or anyone else says that runs counter to Darth Cheney’s words is not news. It happens all the time.

    #11 Thanks for the link.

As far as whatever wisdom it was Russert drew out of the Secretary of State on the matter of Iraq:

They, the State Department, don’t come out of this mess unstained and unshamed; I don’t know if State contributed in any way to the FALSE (and FALSIFIED) ‘pre-war intelligence’ that caused this invasion and occupation of Iraq, but think about it…

The State Department would be the arm of our Federal Government to make all diplomatic efforts to stabilize this Iraq government (destabilized by the invasion); and this includes (especially) gathering support from Iraq’s ‘Ancient Neighbors’ for that government; a support that without, how could such a government stand for very long without a U.S. occupation; and if that support were not there, it would become State’s job to find out why (from the Foreign Ministers of those ‘Ancient Neighbors’ of Iraq), and to getting to work to build that support so that U.S. Troops can leave Iraq.

But is anything being done at all like that by this State Department?

    Hardly seems like it.

From the headlines, it seems like this Administration is working overtime to further alienate Iraq’s ‘Ancient Neighbors’ (notably Syria and Iran) from ever supporting any government left behind after the occupation; that’s an understatement, those ‘Ancient Neighbors’ of Iraq are easier imagined working to destroy anything the occupation leaves behind, rather than support it.

Where is our State Department on this Foreign Relations FIASCO of Death and Danger?

Nowhere (constructive) that I can see.

The United States of America either has a relationship to a Foreign Government through our State Department (in the best situations), or through the U.S. Armed Forces (in the worst).

The U.S. Armed Forces have done their job, well; they have captured Saddam, killed or captured the known legacy to his government, destroyed his ‘Regime’, and also at least verified for the American People that there were no WMD’s (which the Administration had FALSELY led the American People to believe were a threat to their National Security); and all of this in addition to providing as much internal security as they could up until and through the national elections of Dec. 15, 2005 (an internal security that is not actually their job, that job being U.S. National Security).

The U.S. Armed Forces have done their job, well (and should be brought Home as their reward).

But has the State Department done their job, or anything at all in this matter?

Did Tim Russert think to ask the Secretary of State that question?

  19. WiscoDuk says:

5-deferment Dick wouldn’t know a real “last throes” if it bit him squarely in the ass.

Many traits of this ancient Iranian religion of Aryan origin, which has strong similarities before its reformation to the Hinduism of Northern India and the Viking or Norse religion in Northern Europe, are present in modern Persians, Azerbaijanis, Kurds, and Eurasian peoples. Many traits of the Zoroastrian faith are still present in all Iranian peoples’ cultures and traditions from Kurdistan and the Caucausus to Iran and Central Asia.

The origin of the religion is ascribed to the prophet Zarathushtra, who is commonly known in the Western world as Zoroaster, the Greek version of his name. The etymology of his name is disputed and several different explanations exist. The modern Persian form of the prophet’s name is Zartosht (زرتشت).

Zoroaster came to reform ancient Indo-Iranian religious practices (some of which were parallel to the Vedic religion of ancient India).
    ——————

So India, the Vedic Hare Krishnas get Nuclear Weapons and of course they are Persian Greek Zoroasters..Well Well..
    ———————
    But then…
Zoroaster was famous in classical antiquity as the founder of the religion of the Magi. His name is cited by Xanthus, and in the Alcibiades of Plato as well as by Plutarch, Pliny the Elder and Diogenes Laertius. Ancient Greek estimates are dependent upon Persian mythology, and give dates as early as the 7th millennium BC. These are the dates to which Parsis subscribe.[2], [3].

  28. Dem02020 says:

In addition to what this item cites the Secretary of State as saying in her Meet The Press appearance, I have also an International Herald Tribune article (by way of The New York Times Online) detailing her ‘trifecta’ of talk show appearances today, and quoting the Secreatry of State as saying…

…that Washington would ask Moscow about a Pentagon report that Russians had shared elements of the American invasion plan with officials in Baghdad.

“We take very seriously any suggestion that a foreign government may have passed information to the Iraqis prior to the American invasion that might have put our troops in danger,” Ms. Rice said on Fox News, while adding that she could not confirm the report.

…and Ms. Rice appeared to imply that the Kremlin might not have known of any leak to Baghdad. “Let’s see what’s there and let’s talk with the Russian government,” she said on “Fox News Sunday.” “I would not jump to the conclusion that this — if, indeed, the reports are true, that it had to be Moscow-directed.”

…plus Russian spokesmen have rejected reports of the leak as “absolutely nonsense,” suggesting that the Pentagon might have publicized the reports to increase pressure on Russia to press Iran more actively to curb its nuclear program.

…”absolutely nonsense”, you bet; but is the Pentagon making this noise so as to “increase pressure on Russia to press Iran more actively to curb its nuclear program”?

    Not bloody likely.

This noise of trying to allege a ‘pre-war Saddam-Russia link’ is just yet another in a series of preposterous allegations that this Administration will shamelessly imply in order to evade having to confront the elephant in the room:

    Why were no WMD’s found?

If the invasion was authorized to defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq (and that authorization, H.J.Res. 114, says just that), and one of those threats was a WMD threat, and that WMD threat turned out to be FALSE (or FALSIFIED, as all the ‘pre-war intelligence’ threats turned out to be), then isn’t the national security concern also false?

    You bet it is.

And so how best to smooth over the “Why were no WMD’s found” concern, without actually having an investigation into the causes behind the FALSE (or FALSIFIED) ‘pre-war intelligence’?

How about alleging that they were spirited away by Russians, prior to the invasion?

    How about establishing a ‘pre-war Saddam-Russia link’?

It’s preposterous and it’s shameless, and it’s typical of this Administration’s evasion of the elephant in the room (who continues to go uninvestigated).

Consider the source, and read between the lines.

i know this is off-topic but i am truly amazed by the flippant attitude of those who have not encountered this issue firsthand — one of my current housemates works in a cafe with internet access and came home snickering about a ‘dirty old man’ who had come in her cafe, typed a specific search term (secret code words) into a search engine and proceeded to view a website containing images of young people engaged in sex acts.

so what’s the first thing they do (she and my other housemate)? proceed to type the term into a search engine in their computer (out of morbid curiousity, not a genuine interest). i share this internet connection with them and protested vehemently, to the point of pulling the plug on their computer. their initial response of ‘dude, what’s your deal’ was ridiculous to me. i had to explain my past experience and unapologetically declare that i was in no way going to have anything to do with it, even as an ‘innocent joke’ — because there’s nothing innocent or funny about it.

the internet is in many ways a wonderful thing, but it has also ruined many people’s lives through the trade of pedophilia and porn addiction.

oh, and bush is an idiot, condi is either incompetent or a pathological liar, and cheney is the shit-stain of humanity’s underpants.

That’s an easy one Ho, you’re a stupid Leftist Fucksitck. I’d thank you for your service to our country in Vietnam but I’m not sure who’s side you were on back then. But of course now there’s no doubt about it.

Remember those pictures are a little out dated and would guess there has been some added weight gain since taken….Would also bet his only dates are with dunkin donuts…..No woman would want to spend any time with some one so evil, except Laura of course… I agree with all the posts on Rice, she is very intelegent also terribly corrupt, just like her oil men buddies Bush and Cheney…..When I see her it makes me sick, she’s just another evil cog in the Repub. wheel, all for big business and oil. Whores all………..Blessings

I mean, that pretty well wipes out the Laura Ingraham and Ann Coulter types, leaving only women progressives and blowup dolls. Jesus, bud, even I will cross party lines.

Joe it wouldn’t surprise me if you crossed species lines.

If Dick Cheney has a wife, I think there is hope for any man with a pulse. That man (Cheney) is the greatest epitome of ‘pig’ in my definition. If he were the last man on Earth, I’d sooner shoot myself than live in teh same state with him. Gives me the willies just looking at his flat flabby pasty face. Good thing I’ve already eaten lunch. Just talking about him ruins my appetite…

Yes, Corporate American whores for certain. Funny how my friends that hate her the most are educated black women.

anyone have any questions why the majority of returning Iraq vets are running as democrats?

Unbelievable – sure Hillary is throwing her finger to the wind (a time-honored Clinton “device”)and trying to demonstrate her “no-nonsense” credentials for moderates who might be tempted to vote for her. But she will morph into that mutation necessary to secure the nomination by the “Democrat wing of the Democrat Party”. And viola… her acceptance speech at the convention will shift slightly to the right for national television consumption. Don’t forget – she has two things in her favour:
    a.) $$$$ – and lots of it,
b.) as one of the “smartest women” in the world (we’ll forget that stupid Wellesley speech) she has been planning and strategizing HER next move meticulously. Remember, what Hillary wants – she gets.

Not a majority sir, only the ones that we didn’t ask and they didn’t tell.

Mighty moron. Even though I strongly disagaree with some of Hillary’s positions on some issues(Iraq war/flag burning), I would still vote for her over ANY republican 8 ways from sunday. I’m more for Feingold myself but will vote for even Pee Wee Herman to get the GOP OUT of the White House And Congress.

Funny coming from someone who has to PRETEND to be a woman in order to have one in your life.

Face it Mighty Moron, you know even less about liberals, than you do about politics, religion or any topic for that matter.

    IDIOT.

“Remember, what Hillary wants – she gets.
    Comment by mighty aphrodite”

Sounds like envy – yet again. The ‘virtual’ women envies yet another person who (s)he wishes she was like, and knows she’s too stupid, and too inept to ever measure up to. You don’t even make a good ‘virtual’ woman, that operation to turn you into a womyn won’t help. Just face it, you’re never going to be good at anything, or smart enough to feel ’safe’. But you are dumb enough to look like a complete retard to the entire world that reads your drivel.

    You’re a BORING Zzzzz… Moron, nothing more.
