Sen. Joe Biden Chided for 'Racist' Remark

Garrulous Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., has once again planted his foot firmly in his mouth, and is scrambling to spin his videotaped racial slur that denigrates his state's growing population of people who hail from India.

But you'd never know it if your relied on the New York Times, Washington Post, or the rest of the mainstream media. Too busy betraying America's secrets to our enemies, none of them printed a word about Biden's gaffe.

Biden's comments were captured by C-Span cameras during a June event in New Hampshire where the likely 2008 presidential candidate was once again making the rounds with voters in this important primary state.

During a conversation with an Indian-American political activist, Biden said: "In Delaware, the largest growth of population is Indian-Americans, moving from India. You cannot go to a 7/11 or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking."

Biden's reference to the stereotype that the nation's convenience stores are staffed entirely by immigrants from India has angered many members of the Indian-American community.
Slamming Biden for making "ridiculous comments" about the community, the president of the Indian American Republican Council (IARC) in Washington D.C. said in a statement: "Joe Biden has a history of making insensitive and inappropriate remarks . . ."

Dr. Raghavendra Vijayanagar, popularly known in the Indian-American community as "Dr. Vijay," said this isn't the first time a Senate Democrat has insulted Indian-Americans.

"In 2004, Sen. John Kerry referred to Sikhs as terrorists and Sen. Hillary Clinton jokingly referred to Mahatma Gandhi as a gas station owner," Dr. Vijay said. "A clear double-standard in the mainstream media will likely ensure Sen. Biden gets a pass over these comments that would get a Republican in deep trouble if he ever made a similar statement.”

Only Gannett News Service - owners of USA TODAY and Biden's home-state newspaper, the Delmarva Daily Times - reported on the Senator's thoughtless comment. USA TODAY did not carry the story.

Despite the near-total blackout in the mainstream media, the entire incident was captured on a C-Span video clip, which is now spreading rapidly via the Internet.

Biden spokeswoman Margaret Aiken attempted to clarify the senator's remarks: "The point Senator Biden was making is that there has been a vibrant Indian-American community in Delaware for decades. It has primarily been made up of engineers, scientists and physicians, but more recently, middle-class families are moving into Delaware and purchasing family-run small businesses."

The Delmarva paper noted that this is not Biden's first faux pas in New Hampshire, which holds the nation's first presidential primary. During his first presidential bid in 1987, Biden told one New Hampshire voter who questioned his law school grades that: "I think I probably have a much higher IQ than you do."

This whole situation stinks of racism. Why isn't anyone talking about closing off Canadas borders?!!!! More illegal aliens come from there than Mexico. Why aren't we protecting that border from Terrorists and illegals. Because the truth is that they are white and white is always right. Most of the people marching out there believe it or not are American citizens. We are the decendants of illegal immigrants as are ALL AMERICANS, except for Native Americans. We are fighting for our civil rights. Republicans are calling for biometrics to be used to follow their guest workers. They are calling for it to be a federal crime to live with or drive with an undocumented worker. And they are calling for police to be allowed to stop and ask all brown people for proof of their citizenship. Now I am NOT GOING TO STAND for that!!!. I'll be damned if me and my people are going to be having to carry around my birthcertificate everywhere I go. It is blatant racism that white people are not going to be subjected to so why should we be. Biometrics, proof of citizenship. Why not just be made to walk around whith a star on our clothes like the jews did in Nazi Germany?

Pudnoise ...I truly appreciate your compliment.

My only hope is that some Americans would stop drawing rash conclusions without truly conceptualizing the many issues that surround this topic.

Thanks again and enjoy your weekend!!

In response to the progressive thinker...

"I have been spending today reading literally hundreds of other letters to politicians.."
Have you wondered why not one of your "proposals" will ever be implemented?

" I feel supremely confident that I can succeed in this, not because I possess an incredible intellect, but because the opposing arguments are so completely ludricous."

First, utilizing quotes from a movie about a paranoid schizophrenic (Nash) leads one to believe that your insight is not all that “supremely confident.” If that is the way you bolster your argument and appeal to your supposed humility (“not because I possess an incredible intellect”), then you should consider the reasons why Bush has not responded. Perhaps he sees your args as ludicrous. Do you really think the government will do anything drastic as to usurp the stability of some 10-12 million individuals? I think not, check Madison’s 10th.

Your rhetorical device
"1. 12 million people cannot be illegal.
1.a. I am sorry but I must have been asleep the day in math class when they announced that past a certain number logic starts to break down. If a gazillion people break the law, its called anarchy…Is that what we really want?"

Analysis
Your begging the question, of course people can not reside illegally, which is precisely why the status of which they fall under need reformation. Stop circling your methods of reason.

This is a misperceived analysis/ Please check your facts on the econmic status of our country and correlate that with data from the census bureau
"2. Our economy will collapse if we deport all the illegal aliens.
2.a. I do not pretend to have even taken economics, but I did take science and nature abhors a vacuum. LEGAL immigrants are stagnant waiting in line to enter this country the right way and they should be given the first right of refusal for any jobs currently held by illegal aliens. I have no doubt if you were to give the folks in line the opportunity they would jump at those jobs."

Analysis
The same ones waiting inline are the ones who are making up the line…illegal immigrants!! I would assume that you believe in the concept of self determination given its root in our mixed capitalist economy. Those, that are unemployed, which according to the new numbers is very low, have ample opportunity to obtain what they want in our society. We are under a period of economic growth relative to history from any standpoint. How you can contrast a scientific notion of a <em>vacuum </em>with an immigrants legal status in a given country? There is not true contrast there and agin only weakens your argument.

This is hyperbole.
"3. You cant just deport 12 million people.
3.a. um, I bet we can, if we put our collective minds to it. Besides they didnt get here all at once, they came one at a time, and we should be able to send them home they same way. I bet the American people are willing to wait however long it takes as long as we see the process working."

Analysis
Quite the contrary, many of them came in swells through semi-sophisticated means of trafficking. Besides, how does the manner in which they arrived pertain to your proposal of deportation? Upon there crossing of the border, they did not come here physically at the cost of any taxpayer, except what we have spent on control measures allocated by the government. Now, there are proposals in the billions to tighten the border with a wall, high tech devices, more security, etc. Look at the appropriations bill of 05-06 or 06-07 under Dept of Homeland Defense since you prefer to be informed. Your suggesting we send them home the same way you “think” they came…what a clear contradiction!! That would be the biggest pork barrel in history. Do you really think, given the economic opportunity in America those people would not return? Think about the logistics of deporting 10-12 million people and hoping they do not find a way back…What is your proposal, since you believe it is conceivable? Give a clear and specific solution, not the random assumptions you have made in your entire arg.

This is historically not true and wholly contradictory
"4. The only way to fix this problem is through amnesty (e.g. guest worker).
4.a I’ll admit that is one way to deal with this issue, the lazy way. Although, we tried that back in the 80’s and it obviously didnt solve the problem. Instead, it only sent the message that it might happen again. A small, albeit vocal minority would like to see just that; however, I would caution that you shouldnt overlook the hitherto silent majority of citizens in this country and how we feel about rewarding law breakers. Or will we all recieve a get out of jail free card?"

Analysis
Obviously amnesty did not hurt our economy!! Look at the facts of economical growth between now and then. If Amnesty hurt the country somehow, then it would be apparent. So, what exactly is the problem you and the media assert there to be? I will reiterate this for you; we are under a period of economic expansion!! The fundamental problem is their pseudo status and the ever so changing beliefs of Americans. The problem you have is how you and many others think about the situation; its not a truly tangible issue w/ detrimental effects on your individual freedom. Historically, we have had social, health, and monetary issues striking this country for a plethora of reasons, not solely illegal immigrants. Much of what you assert is mounted on short term thinking and has absolutely no historical validity. To think in one instance you complain about the cost to the taxpayer but you propose mass deportation and spending more money!

You need to do more research on the international state of human affairs
"5. This is a human rights issue, and if you dont agree, you’re a racist.
5.a. If this is a human rights issue then we should speed them home and help them free their oppressed countrymen so they can get about the business of building their own perfect society there. As for being labeled racist, that is the position of last resort when the few other cards they have to play are easily trumped by reasoned thinking. This is quickly losing its stopping power the more it is used to blatently try to divert attention from the real issues at hand."

Analysis
Your last post is complete conjecture and appeals to emotion. Your only response to the innate fear people have that was brought on by the polity and the media is, "reasoned thinking." Sir, you have not once articulated a reasonable, realistic and concise solution to your perceived problem, have supported your statements with exaggerated language, and have expressed a tremendous sense of entitlement.

The tax proposal is absurd; how on earth would u determine who supported amnesty and not and apply that to the tax code??!!!! Have you ever read the tax code?!!

Think about it and I encourage you to seek other sources of information, especially Mill's "On Liberty."

Think about it and I encourage you to seek other sources of information, especially Mill’s “On Liberty.”

My last comment: I propose that if we do not get a tough immigration bill passed, then all the folks that support amnesty of the illegals should be forced to pay for it themselves with increased taxes...of course all of the folks against amnesty should be given a corresponding tax break in return.

Incedentally, if sending them home results in higher prices on certain commodities, I would gladly pay more...

Here's another one I wrote to Bush...

To:
President George Bush

April 11, 2006

Dear Mr. President,

I have been spending today reading literally hundreds of other letters to politicians on this subject. I have even written my state's Senators as well. Now, I feel compelled to write to you.

I thought I would try to break down the major arguments and give you some crib notes to use against them. I feel supremely confident that I can succeed in this, not because I possess an incredible intellect, but because the opposing arguments are so completely ludricous.

1. 12 million people cannot be illegal.
1.a. I am sorry but I must have been asleep the day in math class when they announced that past a certain number logic starts to break down. If a gazillion people break the law, its called anarchy...Is that what we really want?

I have no doubt if you were to give the folks in line the oppertunity they would jump at those jobs.

3. You cant just deport 12 million people.
3.a. um, I bet we can, if we put our collective minds to it. Besides they didnt get here all at once, they came one at a time, and we should be able to send them home they same way. I bet the American people are willing to wait however long it takes as long as we see the process working.

4. The only way to fix this problem is through amnesty (e.g. guest worker).
4.a I'll admit that is one way to deal with this issue, the lazy way. Although, we tried that back in the 80's and it obviously didnt solve the problem. Instead, it only sent the message that it might happen again. A small, albeit vocal minority would like to see just that; however, I would caution that you shouldnt overlook the hitherto silent majority of citizens in this country and how we feel about rewarding law breakers. Or will we all recieve a get out of jail free card?

5. This is a human rights issue, and if you dont agree, you're a racist.
5.a. If this is a human rights issue then we should speed them home and help them free their oppressed countrymen so they can get about the business of building their own perfect society there. As for being labeled racist, that is the position of last resort when the few other cards they have to play are easily trumped by reasoned thinking. This is quickly losing its stopping power the more it is used to blatently try to divert attention from the real issues at hand.

I think I speak for a vast majority of American citizens when I say, if our goverment doesnt begin throwing all illegal aliens out of this country, then we, the people, will begin throwing out our goverment.

Here is a letter I wrote to my senators, not at all unlike the 1600+ letters from my state on congress.org, or the 17000+ letters there on immigration from folks all across the nation.

To:
Sen. Ron Wyden
Sen. Gordon Smith

April 10, 2006

Congress should pay absolutely no attention to protestors who are here illegally or anyone waving any flag other than a US flag. The US Congress exists to represent US citizens only. Just because someone is "aqui" does not give them an exemption to our laws. We are a nation of laws as well as a nation of immigrants--concepts that have to be taken together because they are not mutually exclusive. It is high time that our government is starting to take this issue seriously.

The answer to this mess is simple.

First, build up the border security to something approaching that of US airports.

Next, make it a felony + high fine to hire an illegal immigrant. Put the onus on the employer; ignorance of the law is no excuse. Federal law will trump any existing state or local ordinances which currently disallow local law enforcement agencies from enforcing and investigating infractions of US immigration laws. Any non-citizen who is apprehended in violation of immigration laws shall not have the right of trial--dont forget that trials are a right of citizenship, period. Any citizen found to be harboring, aiding or abetting an illegal alien shall be guilty of felony conspiracy. Any illegal alien found in this country after a certain date will forfeit any and all hitherto enjoyed privilages and shall be immediately returned to their country of origin. Any illegal aliens currently incarcerated in US custody shall be immediately returned to their country of origin.

Any country of origin that impedes the repatriation of their citizens shall lose any favored nation trading status, aid packages and loans they currently enjoy. In addition, any non-participating country shall not be forgiven of any outstanding debt and if treaties allow it, that debt shall be payable immediately.

Any child born in this country to illegally immigrated parents shall not be considered a citizen of this country.

If Congress does not have the backbone to pass such a law as this, then put it before the people and I guarantee that we shall. If Congress does nothing to stem the tide of illegal immigraton AND to repair the damage already done, then as a citizen of this country, I and many other like-minded individuals would be completely justified to withhold payment of our taxes using in our defense the fact that the laws of this land are not being enforced equally and therefore we are not being properly represented.

We 'citizens' are America!

Hey Just Me
Your sad little story in comment #431 uses weak logic to imply "New Americans" are racist. GROW UP! Kids repeat things they hear. Even names that were called to them. If you have a problem with a neighborhood boy go talk to his parents! It's pathetic that you should site this example to support your views.

I guess what I am getting at in the above comment is that the Mexican Immigrants are even losing me, a Progressive American of European Descent, with their Nationalistic behavior and their unwilligness to join the club and put being American first. I am not and will not tolerate being an outcast in my country of birth. This intolerance must stop.

Sorry that I didn't read all the comments but the odd thing I have found living in a 90% Mexican Immigrant area, where 50% are illegal aliens, is that I am the subject of scorn and racist comments. I never felt any difference between anyone in my life and yet now I find it hard to actually be compassionate. While up until now every comment has been by someone I never had personal contact with, just yesterday a local boy who is borderline retarded, rode his bike past my house and shouted a racial slur at me. I was alarmed by that as racism comes from parenting and he is not smart enough to get these ideas on his own. I find it hard to accept that New Americans don't want to join the society and see me as somehow not belonging. It is unacceptable.

After engrossing yourself with all the hysteria that has been built by the media and the political elite; how can one conclude it is not nativism or hatred? Or a diversion? Think about this for a moment... The media reports vis a vis the so called "action/ inaction" of our polity that "illegal immigrants," are all of a sudden after two decades or so declared to be a major problem for America.By virtue of their pseudo status; illegal.(Keep in mind "conservative" Reagan granted amnesty)
The politicians knew what they were doing to direct the thoughts of so many willing American ideations. Why then are so many citizens truly in outrage over misperceived "problems" (illegal immigrants) that have existed since this country was founded? The answer, many Americans have succumb to the belief, through an innate fear that was aggitated by this so called push for immigration reform. That innate fear in some people is racist, nativist, hatred, however you may define it, whether you admit to it publicly or not.
Hypothetically, how would the population react, if the 10-12 million illegal immigrants were European? There would be no reaction....There would not be reform and there sure in the hell wouldnt be a mass hysteria built around illegal immigrants..
And for all the die hard racist isolationists out there who "believe" that immigrants, illegal or not, do nothing to stimulate the economy or pay taxes, then you should do much more research. The truth is there, you have to dilligently search for it beyond the random news stations that feed your mind.
Virtually every arg. against illegal immigrants is fallible.
"They dont pay taxes." ...False ... Not only do they pay our regressive sales tax but many also pay into the Fed. How many of the 10-12 million illegal immigrants do you think truly works under the radar? Dont be preposterous either..Walmart, Target, etc..They do not hire without a SSN; which is created and bought through the black market. Many of them already are paying taxes!!! The ones who currently are paying in, FICA, etc.. are actually benefiting the system.
"Terrorist, terrorist, build the wall!!" Blah blah..Flase..A crisis theory is what the current rhetoric sounds like today...Many of you seem to have short term memory. Not to mention a lack of realistically estimating how dangerous "those" illegal immigrants are...They are not dangerous...Out of the 10-12 million, give an accurate number of how many have committed either a crime or a terrorist act.. I gurantee, in regards to crime, you will find the same trend among lAmericans, who are currently not "illegal immigrants." Point of fact; not one illegal immigrant from Mexico has committed a terrorist act.
Oh and economically migra dollars actually strengthen the psychological and real value of the American dollar. Ask Greenspan..or any wise economist for that matter..
Personally, many of the individuals who vehemently deny allowing "illegals" to become "legal," and remain in America to live a fruitful life are smut with a sense of entitlement. What makes you better than the next human being; nothing.

On that note, I find it pathetic that today, here are some Americans subjecting themselves to regressive attitudes and behavior. Stop allowing current rhetoric and ideas to permeate into your conclusions without taking 2 or 3 or 4 looks further into the matter .. Aside from that, find more <strong>humanity</strong> in yourself and realize that you and your selfish desires are not the sole purpose of life...

Challenge your beliefs!!

I think with all my heart that its time now for the silent majority to speak before it is too late! We soon will all be living in the United States of Mexico. It pains me to see our government more concerned about being politically correct with those who are in our country illegally then with looking after the rights of our citizens. As for the illegals claiming “they are Americans” You do not earn a right to be Americans by breaking the laws of our country, earning money for yourself and taking advantage of free medical care and education. Let’s see those hundred thousand protesters line up and volunteer for the military! Then they can serve a tour in Iraq and really earn their right to be in this country like so many immigrants before them have and we can bring many of our sons and daughters home!

Bush ran his presidential campaign on the promise he would reform immigration law, and make it easier for immigrants to work in the United States. Having been the governor of a border state he recognized the contributions immigrants make to the United States. Since taking office he has done nothing to address the issue. Bush is weak in his convictions, and has let down the thousands of Hispanics who felt the Republican Party represented them.

As a far right republican,I can't wait for the liberals to take over congress and the white house. Let's see how well they deal with islamic terrorists that want nothing more than to cut off your childs head. What will this country do when it's congress and white house are controlled be the democrats, and one of our major cities gets 2 garbage cans full of mustard gas dropped on it? By then they'll have nobody to bitch at, no republican to blame. Just a serious problem on thier hands with no will to fight and not a clue of what to do about it.

The left in this country is in for a RUDE awakening. The left does not seem to have any idea of what this country is up against. God help us. And spare me the talking points, I know Iknow, I'm a homophobe, racist, bla bla bla. Go eat a granola bar.

"Sad reality is those countries depend on imported technology to extract, and refine the oil. They also import cars, planes, ships, computers, etc. to build their infrastructure."

What is sad is with all that oil revenue they can OR won't develop their own technology and infrastructures in order not to have to imports all those items you listed. Their socialist domestic and especially their state controlled business policies prevent and/or hinder their development.

"I guess I am trying to say that Venezuela’s problems are well beyond Chavez’s ineffectual policies although he does play a role."

His socialist policies ARE the problem.

"Those are problems ANY democratic country should be able to take care of."

Well the sociocapitalistic U.S. takes far better care of those problems than most of the socialist state planned economies.
