Imus Executive Producer: Carroll is “The Kind of Woman Who Would Wear One of Those Suicide Vests, Sneak Into the Green Zone”»

There was a shocking segment earlier today on the popular radio/television show “Imus In The Morning.” Watch this exchange between Executive Producer (and “quick-witted on-air contributor”) Bernard McGuirk and Don Imus’ sidekick Charles McCord.

Some lowlights:

MCGUIRK: She strikes me as the kind of woman who would wear one of those suicide vests. You know, walk into the — try and sneak into the Green Zone.

IMUS: Oh, no. No, no, no, no.

MCCORD: Just because she always appears in traditional Arab garb and wearing a burka.

MCGUIRK: Yeah, what’s with the head gear? Take it off. Let’s see.

MCCORD: Exactly. She cooked with them, lived with them.

IMUS: This is not helping.

MCGUIRK: She may be carrying Habib’s baby at this point.

IMUS: She could. It’s not like she was representing the insurgents or the terrorists or those people.

MCCORD: Well, there’s no evidence directly of that –

IMUS: Oh, gosh, you better shut up!

MCGUIRK: She’s like the Taliban Johnny or something.

  1. yankeluh Says:

    Stupid ignorant radio sh*theads.

  2. Ducktape Says:

Just reinforces the reason that I stopped listening to talk radio bullshit a long time ago. Why anyone else considers what these low-lifes think is beyond me.

  3. jahyarain Says:

in the wise words of Jeff Spicoli…”what a dick”.

  4. tim Says:

everything Bernard says is basically a crude joke meant to stir contraversy. You can’t take his comments seriously

  5. demattack Says:

Exactly the kind of thing from the vile right.

  6. NTodd Says:

Lovely freaking human beings, every one.

  7. Bush Bites Says:

Ah, I watched that show for a year or so.

All the pols and major reporters line up to go on there, and sometimes tell things they wouldn’t normally say in their speeches or article/reports.

But I got sick of listening to a bunch of geriatrics act like high school boys.

  8. kriselda jarnsaxa Says:

I’m just glad to see that Imus was telling them to shut up - I’m no fan of his, but that was good. As to the other too mooks, they should be fired immediately.

  9. Krazny Says:

Talk radio on both sides of the aisle is trash. All it really does is reinforce beliefs, it does not inform. I tried listening to Air America a couple of times, but found I prefer journalism over bias reporting.

  10. persi Says:

They hit a new low in intelligence.

  11. Terri Says:

I’m an ASS in the Morning. Shame on them!

  12. JDO Says:

Oh settle down now kids…that’s the worst you’ve heard on AM radio? Bernard does that stuff all the time. He’s cracked worse. And if you think that’s bad you haven’t heard Stern, Mancow, O&A say stuff a LOT worse

  13. Yasonyacky Says:

Jesu Christo. That is well beyond the pale. I knew people like this in high school - you know, the ones who would talk shit about someone who committed suicide or something? Or the ones who made jokes about the Challenger explosion? The lack of sympathy/empathy was (and still is) just gut-wrenching to me. These are damaged people.

  14. Doug Says:

When even J.D. Hayworth is repudiating your position, you know you’re beyond the pale. I’m not always a big fan of Imus’s, but kriselda is right, I appreciate the fact that he was at least attempting to maintain some sort of respectability.

  15. Steve Says:

The Right sure loved Marla Ruzicka too, as I recall. And when Code Pink raised money for humanitarian aid to the people of Fallujah, the Right smeared them as traitors. Apparently the only way we are allowed to help the people of Iraq is with guns.

  16. mighty aphrodite Says:

“This is so vile! Don’t these people have any sense of decorum?”
    Comment by Izzy

****What is necessary for a prog to discuss “decorum”??? Progs wouldn’t know decorum if it came up and flashed a thong….

  17. Vance Says:

Why does the MSM give these supposed “Former” addicts a platform to spew thier bullshit?

  18. GoGo LaTata Says:

Exactly the sort of thing I would expect from these radio bozos but not the National Review….

    http://thinkprogress.org/ 2006/ 03/ 30/ podhoretz-attacks-carroll/

  19. Alice bentley Says:

That Bernard is just a little weasle who has to make himself bigger by smearing a woman. His remarks when he has that Fed Ex envelope on make me retch and reach for the remote. I can’t get that smarmy little f**k off my screen fast enough. What a boob.

  20. johnny nathaniel Says:

Wow the Imus show is hot! those two genuine American are expressing there viewpoints about a woman who was silly and absent minded about trying to save the iraqi’s from themselves and the Horrors of Islam.
Hoorah! why do some white folks feel it is there duty to save the world. One moment you guy’s are dropping WMD’s on Japan and the next your preaching salvation….eh ha ha. You just can’t have it both way’s Either ya work for Lucifer and destroy the planet and all it lifeforms or work for Jesus and truly love you neighbor as you would yourselves.

  21. michael Says:

these guys are like school on sunday NO CLASS!

  22. Big Bahstid Says:

Imus himself is capable of high and low humor all in the same gig, better than most. And that’s not to say middle brow, either. High, then low. But he’s innocent here, except for not firing his sidekick on the spot, live on the air. Imus was a funny funny cat about 30 years ago. Now he’s coasting on the momentum of name recognition, sort of like Ted Kennedy and Trent Lott.

  23. progressive and proud Says:

#17 That was pretty stupid don’t you think? What’s with the hostage hating? Do republicans hate them too? You guys seem to be running out of new enemies, seeing as though everyone is an enemy to you guys. Well, except for Dubai.

  24. Jesus Christ God of WAR Says:

#1 - Don’t these people have any sense of decorum?

No. Decorum is something decent caring human beings have. What these guys have are left over unspent hormones from Jr. High.

Sounds just like the entire GOP, doesn’t it? No decorum.

Huh. I wonder what happened to my country?

  25. Jeanne Says:

What freaks. Ick. Tough middle aged rich white men sitting around shooting the breeze. Freaking idiots.

  26. Bush lied to God Says:

Leave it to muddy aphroduddy to spew ignorance like the newby roman at the vomitorium

  27. John Emerson Says:

Just think of the one-liners he’d have come up with if her head had actually been cut off! It’s a pity, really.

  28. Vance Says:

Isn’t Bernard a registered sexual offender? Imus is a junkie and alcoholic, and these are the types the right love to worship.

  29. blindprogressive Says:

The Imus show is full of uneducated old farts. The humorous part will be to see how many journalists call in to his show without making mention of the comment.

  30. metacomet Says:

I’m just glad to see that Imus was telling them to shut up - I’m no fan of his, but that was good. As to the other too mooks, they should be fired immediately.

    kriselda jarnsaxa

“Imus was telling them to shut up”…riiiight. Please. This is the I-man’s MO - tell Bernie and Charles to shut up - that get’s the I-man off the hook - but then they’ll pull the same routine the next day with Hillary Clinton or some other liberal. Imus should be fired, too!!

  31. james risser Says:

gee, i wonder if people should go to this link and make an fcc complaint about these filthy pigs??? it only takes a minute or two.

    have a nice day…

  32. John Emerson Says:

    13. Jeez, there’s a lot of this stuff? And that’s supposed to make me feel better?

  33. CheneyKilledNatalieHalloway Says:

#13, Howard, ManCow and others make jokes tongue in cheek. Don Imus and co. make their jokes fist in ass.

  34. Daniel Hampton Says:

Bernard is often right about these matters. Let’s see what transpires in the next couple of weeks

  35. nwash Says:

Get over it people. Jeez, have you ever watched the show, it was obviously a joke. People please try to get a life..

  36. Edward Deevy Says:

Imus is the scum of this earth. Pure white trash. A racist ignorant bigot. He should go back into whatever sewer he climed out of. Jill Carroll had more dignity and patriotism in her little finger than all those Imus bastards put together. Boycott his program.

  37. Southwest Bob Says:

These clowns are doing nothing more than circle jerking. No one cares what they think ~ their ratings are in the tank so anything is fair game. They guys need attention so badly that even negative attention makes them believe they are successful. Let the FCC give them some attention.

  38. Dan hampton Says:

I agree with Bernard. He is often right on the money and I bet he is proven right here.

  39. potter Says:

When are the targets of all these smears going to drag these assholes into court and take it out on the bank accounts of them and their irresponsible employers.

  40. johnny nathaniel Says:

Please freedom of speech ! why do you white folks all of a sudden want to censor folks. This is supposed to be a democracy…hmmm I guess you guy’s are willing to give up your freedom because yall haven’t fought really hard for it in 60 years. As for me IMUS and the old fart boys can continue the diatrib. I can’t wait to for the anti christ to appear and put a chip in yall booty and really take away your freedom. Jill Carroll should have stayed at home and preached goodwill to the poor whites in Apalacia not some brown arab who did not ask for her to come to there country. Stay out of brown ,red, black and yellow people business the world is not yours to continue conquering.

  41. Bobby Couillard Says:

When you have a pig for a president then the rest of the herd, small though they may be, tend to start oinking and grunting as loud as their leader. Most all of today’s conservative talk/news people are nothing more than pigs with microphones and a tiny audience. These guys (this includes Coulter who hardly qualifies as a woman) were the loud-mouthed, schoolyard terrorists when I was a kid and just ignoring them and hoping they’d go away didn’t seem to work. They’re also like rabid dogs . . . and there’s only one way to deal with a rabid dog, and it’s not to pat it’s little head and say “no!” these people are not open to a civilized conversation, they only understand that which they spew. I think it’s time to get down with the pigs and have a barbeque!

  42. Lee Mania Says:

Imus’s cowardly “let Bernard say the bad stuff and I’ll do the ‘no,no bit’ ” is so transparent and ugly. Howard Stern had the honesty to say what he thought;Don Imus hides. Jerk!

  43. Darlene Blair Says:

    Don,

You tell it like it is and that is not a bad thing. I feel your co-hosts were out of line discussing Jill Carroll in the acrominoius way they did. It’s easy to be full of piss and vinegar when behind the safety of a studio microphone. Jill stepped out of all of our comfort zones and put her money where her mouth is. Perhaps your gentlemen friends could consider doing the same?I

  44. Think Progress » John Podhoretz Attacks Jill Carroll Says:

[…] UPDATE: Imus Executive Producer: Carroll is “The Kind of Woman Who Would Wear One of Those Suicide Vests, Sneak Into the Green Zone” […]

  45. Sharon Cox Says:

Imus and crew are just a binch of has been pukes, watched once and that was enough…Why does MA always have to turn the right winged crap into something sexual or sophmoric.?…..Blessings

  46. ronin Says:

But he’s innocent here, except for not firing his sidekick on the spot, live on the air.

Imus can have it both ways, his sidekick can throw red meat to the wolves and Imus can inncocently say, “Oh! No! I’m so shocked at your indecorum!”

    Right.

  47. A Newer World » Blog Archive » More Bashing of Jill Carroll Says:

[…] And Think Progress has another from Imus’s Bernard McGuirk: MCGUIRK: She strikes me as the kind of woman who would wear one of those suicide vests. You know, walk into the — try and sneak into the Green Zone. […]

  48. johnny nathaniel Says:

Jill Carroll ,come back to home to administer to American’s in po folk country. The world need leaders to rise up in their own countries to overcome destitution, destruction ,poverty ,etc ,etc ,etc. Look we are going to have to deal with real issue at home like Out sourcing american jobs. illegal aliens driving down wages; George Bush, George Bush, George Bush, George Bush. Oh did i mention high gas prices and George Bush, George Bush,Hurrican Katrina, Oh George Bush. Now that’s a real American Delima. Oh and George Bush/

  49. Zookeeper Says:

I’d expect this kind of crap from 9th graders. I wonder if it occurs to these guys that Jill Carroll went over there to get a story, and thought maybe she would show some respect while in a different country? It doesn’t mean she loves everything the Iraqis do.

  50. Matt O. Says:

It is great news that she is free. But can someone explain this to me?

She said she was not threatened or ill-treated, great, but if that was the case, why was she crying, claiming they were going to kill her on those tapes?

I don’t know about you but if someone says to me that they will kill me if I don’t do “A,” that sounds like a threat to me.

I am just scratching my head on this one.

  51. Ted Brooks Says:

Folks - I watched it this morning. This is called satire - and was an attempt at humor. Yes - it failed - but it was not meant to be taken seriously. Bernard McGuirk is an intelligent, enlightened man who plays a character on the show (just like Steven Colbert does) of a biggoted jerk - and his job is to make sometimes funny, sometime inappropriate comments. Most times they work. Some times (this morning) they don’t. Lighten up everybody.

  52. DonCorleone Says:

Sad, Sad, Sad! Bernad finally went too far in kissing the I Man’s butt. Come on you conservative republican water boy wanna be. You need to shut your bald, I ain’t got no women, I wanna be somebody, but I ain’t got no talent, if it weren’t for kissing Imus’ butt, I wouldn’t even be able to get a job washing cars mouth. I’m not watching you kiss butt anymore!

  53. DonCorleone Says:

  54. nobody Says:

Jeeez! What does it take to get a no-talent clown fired these days?

  55. Mash Says:

    Its morning in America…..

  56. tom Says:

    scum.

  57. LC Liberal Says:

The right gets more sick and disgusting every day. So she’s a “terrorist suicide bomber” just because she’s against the war and wore a headscarf? Jill Carroll deserves respect for the fact that she cared enough about the Iraqi people to actually go to Iraq. I’d like to see all of the pompous jerks on the right go there and get beheaded or something.

Well, wait a minute. She did work for the “Hamas front group CAIR” (!!!???)

See more on this ridiculous comment on
    http://www.lcoliberal.blogspot.com

, so maybe she was a terrorist.

  58. Steve J. Says:

everything Bernard says is basically a crude joke meant to stir contraversy. You can’t take his comments seriously

    Comment by tim

    Unfortunately, BushBots believe him.

  59. boby Sorkh Says:

What is this country coming to? Supreme court justice uses obsenity gesture. Talk shows spew hate and vulagrity. Most radio and TV shows are filled with hate speech. Foreigners are made fun of all the time. People use faul and obsenity filled language all the time. People are very rude. Respect for elderly is almost non-existent. Americans are becoming the lowest class people on earth. This is a sign of a clture going down hill in high speed.
    Bobak

  60. AK Says:

These idiots should be taken off the air. They represent the worst in American society and very well could be the reason we have been unable to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people and the war itself. They are downright UNAMERICAN

  61. Bob Says:

    #55,

I think folks might have been a little less inclined to react to these comments if some on the right weren’t trying to make Jill Carroll out to be some sort of traitor.

What is they say about comedy? It’s all about timing. And it strikes me that Bernard McGuirk’s sense of timing on this issue was pretty lousy.

  62. duroc Says:

When you have a pig for a president then the rest of the herd, small though they may be, tend to start oinking and grunting as loud as their leader.

This is an insult to the porcine everywhere!

  63. TJM Says:

Yeah, what is this country coming to. Why, a full 10% believe talk radio is factual. I mean 10%!The rest think it’s entertainment. Sort of like here,it’s entertainment. Some is high-brow,some low. Imus just happens to be very low, like Howard Stern but without lesbian hooker movie starlets.

  64. I-RIGHT-I Says:

    “Jill, show us your tits”

    ~Howard Stern

  65. C.P.T.L. Says:

Hear hear - all of the above. And what makes it all the lower is that she can’t defend herself. Imus’s “No, no, no…”s are all part of it. He’s not objecting there, he’s playing ’straight man.’ He is just as responsible as McGuirk and McCord. It’s really all quite sad - there are so many good people in the country, in the world, with something decent and helpful to say - and hours and hours of T.V. and radio go on with these miserable, no-class, parasites who’ll say anything for a buck.

  66. Spudge_Boy Says:

    “Jill, show us your tits”

    ~Howard Stern

    I-RIGHT-I,

You showing us all your fear of the female body again?

  67. DS Says:

Everything I’ve read about this today from the right is very offensive to what Carroll went through. Because she isn’t on the air praising Bush’s invasion of Iraq, but instead saying that her kidnappers treated her kindly, she’s be talked about this way?

Seems to me she was treated better than we treat people we kidnapped and put into Guantanamo, so no one in the U.S. is really in the moral position to make any negative claims about Carroll or her what her situation was or was not.

All the negative talk about her seems too well orchestrated. Odds that we hear later this week that she’s already turned down an opportunity to appear with Bush so this is Rove’s payback?

  68. Chris Wolf Says:

Jill Carroll was writing for the Christian Science Monitor and most of her writings were very critical of the American occupation and rebuilding efforts. Some have theorized that her abduction may have been encouraged and abetted by less than honourable allies of the administration. Crazy, i know, but almost plausible for this gang.

  69. Hattie Says:

Yes, they make so much money for behaving like assholes while teachers and nurses and humanitarians in general get trashed.

  70. Jeff Says:

Who the hell cares what this washed-up has-been does or says? He was never relevant or funny.

  71. JenD Says:

That is some of the most outrageous dialog that I have ever heard in my life. Ever. I am appalled. Un-fucking-believable.

  72. Hamster Brain Says:

And people actually listen to this show?

  73. Hamster Brain Says:

what the Hell is a IMUS anyway?
    Perhaps the AEIOU is wrong

    AMUS Well thats better, perhaps my Gematria is off one letter;;;

    ANUS

Yes thats what I thought, The Guy is AN ASSHO’

  74. AK Says:

The question here is a simple one …do we wish to win in Iraq?…The logical answer should be yes. Then how do we achieve this objective? Answer: win over the people …let them know that American ideals frown upon hate mongers and that all people are created equal. If Jill Carroll is being targeted for wearing a head scarf and telling the truth …we certainly can’t win this war because we will never win over the people of the country we occupy.

  75. Hamster Brain Says:

    IMUS= ANUS

WIN??? WTF I thought this was to FREE not WIN.
You mean how do we get these people to free themselves?

  77. Hamster Brain Says:

Jill Carrol probably wore what she was given to Wear.

So George Bush Wearing Outfits when he goes to other countries now means hes Jewish? How about that Commusnits Chinese Garb Bush Wore?
I don’t hear the Pundits caterwauling about that..
    Hypocrites go figure.

  78. Maezeppa Says:

I hope MSNBC drops Imus. It can’t possibly get them ratings anyway. That kind of shock jock garbage has no place on a cable news channel.

  79. Hamster Brain Says:

    Bush in China ‘Commie’ Outfit.
Bush looks like a COMMIE that would Hide a BOMB and enter Congress and SPY!

  80. Hamster Brain Says:

IRI is a Paint Ball Hero Putz who thinks Rushdoony is some sort of freaking Deity

  81. Pegasus1945 Says:

Poster # 33 I went to that link and complained loudly and long and have e-mailed a ton of friends to do the same. Those assholes that the Iman employees are just a bunch of cum headed pricks and are not even worth spitting on. All they seem to have to offer is bigotry… like they are such prizes to humanity… lol lol IMUS seemed to at least try and stop the issue but not too hard I must say. Take the bunch of them off TV and put Keith Olbermann on in the morning too as well as his nighttime slot. He just beat out Paula the Loon from CNN and ‘Really has lost 24% of his people too. I hope Keith keeps bagging that a-hole O’Reilly, I know it pisses him off big time.

  82. rab Says:

The I-Man and his crew are really no worse than a daily hit of Animal House…hardly doing the damage that Lush Rimbag has been getting away with for almost two decades.

Whereas I don’t think many listeners are that much influenced by Imus, a huge following of ditto-brains are still worshipping the pill-popping Limbaugh and taking him seriously enough to stunt whatever thinking capacity they had in the first place.

Although Rush’s deceitful facade causes his lemmings to believe every lie and half-truth he utters, I don’t sense Imus and crew taking themselves all that seriously.

  83. chris Says:

sometimes they just go too far.

  84. kevo Says:

When I hear such vile musings from fellas like these, (and there are a bunch of them on AM radio and cable TV), I can’t help thinking that these men and their ilk secretly want to kiss each other on the mouth, but are too pent up to declare such yearnings. Instead, their frustration comes out as invective toward people who can more openly embrace themselves as living wonderous creatures under the sun. -Kevo

  85. Shag Says:

Imus is a scumbag, so why shoud we expect any better from this show. He had the nerve to refer to a White House reporter the other day as, “old.” He’s slimey and his show is a gutter show.

  86. Chuck Nakell Says:

Beneath it all (just barely beneath), Don Imus is a very neurotic, depressed person who values radio shock over the effect of his words, period. A very superficial human being.

  87. Cyra Brown Says:

I can only wonder what they would have said, if the name was “Bill”, instead of Jill. Any opinions on that, folks?

  88. Pat Walters Says:

While the Imus show can get a little bizarre at times and a lot of mean spirited comments are made, they seem to be bi-partisan most of the time and in that respect a lot are treated equally if sometimes pretty harshly .On the other hand Hannity,Limbaugh and Coulter spew out pure hate.I wonder what Coulter will do to her when she get the fangs in? Far worse than Imus and his gang.

  89. janet Says:

I can’t understand how that show stays on the air. Who watches that crap?

  90. Marie Says:

If this is satire, it misfired and was totally misplaced at the hands of two idiots.
If this is an example of the intelligence and thought process of those two miscreants, they should be fired. While not a big Imus fan, I believe he was truly trying to stop the insanity this morning. Wonder if he will bring it up tomorrow with an explanation.
It is so outrageous that it’s hard to believe.
On the other hand, the regular rightwing media has done much the same all day. If Caroll had been killed, she would be a martyr; but she was released in good health and kept under relatively good conditions, so she is a sympathizer, anti-American, brainwashed and suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.
We don’t know who kidnapped her; why she was released, and if any deals were made.

  91. Cecil Franklin Says:

While mean (and funny), a woman who comes out of that kind of a situation and says she was treated well by her captors puts a bullseye on her forehead. These terroristsshot her translator and threatened to behead her. Must’ve been some real good cookies they baked for her.

  92. Willy Says:

When I watched the news this evening about the release of Jill Carroll I couldn’t stop smiling. What a very nice story, and coming out of Iraq even. But then I hear about the bile and hate spewing from the right. What is their problem?

It is very wonderful being an optimistic, idealistic, forward-looking, fun loving, happy Liberal and Progressive. I can’t imagine how it is being a hateful, spiteful, mean-spirited, backward looking, longing for the “good old days”, unhappy right-wing Conservative.

What a wonderful difference! I wouldn’t trade places with one of them for all of the money in the world.

  93. avrum Says:

He’s right, she’s just another Taliban Tillie. A wannabe raghead.

  94. Far Too Much Says:

This show is a total waste of air time. It would be so nice to have an intelligent news show to watch while I wake up with coffee. I pay for cable. What do I get. This swill. I’m going to watch tomorrow and write every advertiser.

  95. jose_carlos Says:

the poor naive girl got kidnapped because she was playing in a lethal playpen, trying to be big. the comments about her being a suicide bomber or having habib’s baby show the depth or lack of, these talk shows. i prefer to watch jerry springer!

  96. Beriah Says:

    Imus is Idle.

  97. Tim Says:

You all are clueless if you think the Imus clan are right wing and support the GOP. Put your righteous indignation on hold for five seconds and ask yourself … Why doesn’t she take off the headwear? More will come out. Remember Patty Hearst?

  98. jurassicpork Says:

Can’t we just press the Staples “Easy” button and vaporize these assholes? Speaking of whom…

You ever get a comment on your blog that was so bizarre in its reasoning, so hateful and spiteful in its invective that it had to be answered in a separate post? I got such a comment today and I couldn’t help but give this asshole his fifteen minutes of fame.

  99. Ryan Neat Says:

“Why doesn’t she take off the headwear? More will come out. Remember Patty Hearst? Comment by Tim ”

Because she’s in a dangerous part of the city and perhaps doesn’t want any more attention drawn to her than is necessary?

So you’re so convinced ‘more will come out’, what will you ‘give everyone’ if it doesn’t? An apology? A criticism of yourself and fellow reichwingers for jumping to conclusion with no PROOF but lots of stereotyping and rhetoric?

Your whole rant was an exercise in paranoia, bigotry, and delusional conspiracy nonsense. Grow up, and when you hit puberty, start acting like an adult - MORON.

  100. Spudge_Boy Says:

Both of them are wearing headresses in Dubai. I thought Muslims were our friends and that the Democrats were racist for not wanting DP World taking over our ports. Didn’t Bush say that he would do everything in his power to allow these two gentlemen the chance to manage 22 ports in the US.

But, it is bad for a girl to wear a headress while she is in the Muslim country of Iraq.

Shoot that one guy’s name is freaking Mohammed for Christ sake.

  101. Richard Ronin Says:

The host has to take some responsability for these two morons. This kind of retoric translates into listeners which translates into dollars. But then you lot are in Iraq because of dollars aren’t you?

This woman has more going for her than all three of you put together! Just because she didn’t come back with some disgusting storyof rape and abuse that you could get your rocks off on you project her as a traitor and whore! Bad form boys, and I mean boys.

And Imus, you know where the delete switch is, try using it next time you get a loose cannon on deck!

    ~R.

  102. The Dude Abides Says:

The bigest outrage of this story is that the Imus show is described as “popular”.

  103. Gail Says:

To borrow from Charles Rangel when asked about George Bush, the remarks from these three guys certainly shatters the myth of white supremacy once and for all.

  104. El Perro Patron Says:

Imus is a retard who is desperate to be able to till .00001% of Howard Stern’s shoes.

    What do you expect?

  105. Keefer Says:

I think the right wing is disappointed that Jill wasn’t raped and tortured. That would give them more anti Islam propaganda. In the online discussions , Bush supporters were ravaging her. I think this what the Neocons call a preemtive strike. what are they afraid of that they are “swiftboating her already ? She wasn’t wearing a burka , but a hajib. the burka covers the entire body, the Hajib is a headscarve. Because she said” she wasn’t mistreated, bushbots are calling her a traitor. When i hear that idiocy, I generally fear for this country and truly despise bush for causing it.

  106. bekkieann Says:

If MSNBC wants to simulcast talk radio, I suggest they try to pick up The Young Turks. Cenk Uygr is brilliant! It would raise the intellectual level for my morning coffee time. PLEASE give us a better alternative than “Friends” or Rednecks.

  107. greg Says:

    come on that was funny!

  108. Anastasia Says:

This just shows how ignorant these guys are. As it turns out, Jill Carroll wears a Burkha, just as male Western reporters wear beards, in order to blend in with the population.

But if being an ignoramous was all they were guilty of, that would be one thing. But Jill was kidnapped and held hostage for 3 months, and is probably ten times braver than McGuirk and McCord will ever be.

    These guys are creeps.

  109. Solitaire Says:

Yeah, we get a diet of pablum and trash on talk radio. Most of it is hate-filled gobblety gook. Just like this stuff. Funny?
    Whatever.

  110. Cyra Brown Says:

#112- I suppose you think “clubbing” baby seals to death is a ’side-splitter’ huh? I think your “funny bone” is broken. Better get that thing fixed. Sooner.

  111. Jack Says:

If you are looking for intelligent talk radio, try BBC 4. It is consistently the best radio out there.

Do you think they are just *ssholes or was this a sick ploy for ratings?

Aren’t they called shock-jocks for a reason. I could never listen to Limbaugh or Stern for those very reasons. I had always hoped that people would be smart enough and deceit enough to turn both of them off, for different reasons. Oh well, what do I know.

  112. trueblue Says:

THAT’s why I haven’t posted in 6 weeks! Write the people who EMPLOY Imus instead of simply complaining here!… more might get done!

#55, Bernard is a producer, not an actor. I’ve listened to Imus on and off for 20 years. Bernard, the private person, has considerable scar tissue for brains and it frequently carries over into his on-air personality.

  114. dabronx Says:

I agree that Americans are the most politically backward/ignorant people on the

how can anyone expect anything but a low level of political consciousness as a result.

  115. Mash Says:

There’s been a disturbing drumbeat on right wing radio and websitea today about Jill Carroll and her motivations. To counter, I just put up a post on my website that I hope reflects the majority of opinion about this wonderful news. Please feel free to read it and offer your comments.

  116. PatT Says:

    Matt O. asks:

She said she was not threatened or ill-treated, great, but if that was the case, why was she crying, claiming they were going to kill her on those tapes?

There are lots of possible explanations — no need to infer something underhanded…

Could be Stockholm Syndrome (empathizing w/ captors). Or more generally, it might just be a mental survival mechanism — quelling the fear by believing nothing bad is going to happen, and maybe adjusting memories to support that.

Or, it could be that initially, she was being threatened — at the least, she was told to say that she’d be killed if female prisoners weren’t released — and maybe mistreated, but later that stopped. Then the fear-avoidance mechanism would lead her to concentrate on the later treatment.

In any of the above cases, she may gradually remember more accurately.

There are also possibilities in which her memory of not being mistreated is accurate. For instance:

It could be that initially, she was inferring more danger than there was, based on what’s happened to other hostages, and so was afraid based on the likely outcome, then gradually relaxed as nothing happened.

It could also be that she was being treated well physically all along, independent of the threats associated with making the videos.

Maybe she’s so relieved to have been released, she’s whitewashing her treatment to some extent.

Or, as has been suggested, maybe she didn’t consider herself out of danger yet, and wanted to be inoffensive until she was sure she was safe.

Lots of possibilities…we won’t know til she’s had time to recover.

  117. Brian Williams Says:

Have you ever actually taken a few minutes to watch this man, not listen but watch him? If after half-an-hour of his “act” you don’t realize that he is really, seriously disturbed, then you have to have a heart and mind made of concrete. He truly is the illogical extention of Howard Beal come to quasi-life. It’s sick to see a major corporation putting a man on the air that they must know in their hearts needs serious psychologica help and making massive profits from him. But then we alos have Ann Colter and Nancy Grace and Howard Stern, people who you would never in your lives invite into your house in any other circumstances beaming in on a daily basis. It’s siply vomitous….

  119. gdkzen Says:

Par for the course w/ Bernard. Short of taking a crap on live TV, there is little that he could do that will actually make Imus fire him. He’s there to make Imus look like a not-so-bad guy.

  120. Cyra Brown Says:

#117- TrueBlue, good to “read” you! Welcome back. How are you and your daughter doing? I hope all is well. It didn’t sound to me that Imus was saying that stuff. It was his guests, and Imus seemed to be asking them to cut it out. And the more I read that, the more I got the impression that his guests were TRYING to get him in trouble by saying outrageously stupid stuff. It’s still not funny.

  124. juslin Says:

it amazes me that msnbc will tolerate boorish comments from wingers on the “Imus” show and and never see fit to reprimand mcquirk for the many times he’s uttered unfair and racist “quips”! its just a long list of things msnbc does in emulating faux tv news and still they dont get the ratings. i’m shocked they keep Countdown on air- the only saving grace on the network

#123 Mozilla User. Uh. I don’t know what to say. First, let me start by saying that I’m not responsible for this site or any of its code, so don’t bother hassling me about it. But, I have a serious question. You came to the site and the only thing you are interested in commenting on is the code behind the site? Are you serious? I’m all for standards compliance, but if the Alt+B is reserved for bold on this site, then you should either move your lazy hand to the Bookmarks menu or leave find another site to complain about. Things work just fine on my Mac using Firefox. Apple+B is bookmarks, and Ctrl+B is for bold. Of course you would agree with that crazy shit Gary Rupert. How is it being balls to the walls nuts? Are the meds good? Is the rubber room fun? Have you figured out how to escape form your straight jacket yet?

  130. Vaughn D. Taylor Says:

These guys were not joking with their comments. In the neocon lexicon, a “joke” is a mean-spirited comment or action. They call it a “joke” to make it seem like the “jokees” are so sensitive that they just don’t get it. But really, a joke should be funny — not a dickhead bully remark.

The woman covered her head for the sake of safety — to blend in. She was held captive, and she was freed. She wasn’t mistreated, and she said so. So, what’s to joke about? It’s a fortunate end to an unfortunate event — we should be happy. Would the neocons be more happy if she was beheaded? I’m starting to believe that her death was what the neocons hoped for.

I’m not an Imus fan, but I’m not going to bash the guy for this exchange. Personally, I don’t believe that Imus was too comfortable with the co-hosts comments.

  131. Riverbed Says:

If Imus isn’t comfortable, let him fire them. These people are crude and tasteless. I’d rather see a hard news show at that hour anyway. I wish MSNBC would just drop the entire show. I won’t watch again.

What Scalia just did to himself over the weekend is a perfect example. He IS Thomas’ public hair on the Coke® can. What a palooka. His debased comments on the value of orgies and his treason vote in 2000 were obvious enough, but he joins the Go Fuck Yourself Party platform in a big way, by showing America his Go Fuck Yourself Face. And don’t kid yourself he didn’t do it on purpose, because he wants us to see it.

When Bush came out for the photo-op with Koizumi and Putin in Peru in 2004, and Bush had his underwear STICKING out of his open zipper, as he walked down the few stairs with his hands turned backward, and a slouching shit-eating-grin on his OBVIOUSLY COKED UP face — everybody got the meaning LOUD AND CLEAR.

The R party just TORCHED their entire Latino outreach program. They just took a blowtoarch to most of their votes, nationwide, on just about every count. And they have INSTALLED VOTE-FRAUD machines acorss the country, the fruition of, uniindicted criminal from Ohio, Ney’s Help America Vote Act, that is, BY VOTING FOR THEM.

Republicans in the Senate are talking about how BORED they are with their RUBBERSTAMPING. But oh well — this is tyranny, not democracy anyhow.

Bush destroys EVERYTHING, including himself. We must REMOVE HIM FROM OFFICE, while resisting the urge to scapegoat the Congressional minority for what the former-Republican party has done to itself, and to America.

    Bush Must Resign.

I heard on the TV the other night Jill Carroll insisting that her captors treated her well, really well. Let us not forget that others who were with her that day she was captured were not treated so well. As Michelle Malikin states JILL CARROLL was FREED but Allan Enwiya wasn’t, was he? He got gunned down.

“I heard on the TV the other night Jill Carroll insisting that her captors treated her well, really well. Let us not forget that others who were with her that day she was captured were not treated so well. “–Dan Kauffman

Yeah, Dan, that’s a totally different cirucumstance. Only RACIST rightwingers want to express their COLLECTIVE GUILT THEORY by PRETENDING that the diverse Iraqi culture is monolithic, and therefore it is acceptable, ON ANY LEVEL, to destroy 70% of Falluja’s buildings, and use white phosphorus on civilians, based on the murder of four Blackwater mercs — WITHOUT AN INQUEST.

There is nothing in international LAW that allows for murder of CITIES on suspicion. It’s international terrorism, and it is ILLEGAL. It violates Article 2 of the UN charrter, which is US law. And it violates the Geneva Conventions, which are ALSO US law.

So if Jill Carroll was freed by HER captors, that tells you absolutely nothing about what might have happened to her were she singled out by some other group of Iraqis, or some squad like Blackwater, or some other bunch of paid thugs/fighters. We know that Erinys hired deathsquad criminals from South Africa, and they also bragged about hiring thugs from Chile. Turning racist terrorists loose on AN INNOCENT POPULATION is a Class A Warcrime, and in fact GENOCIDE.

So spare us the tears and sobbing for a handful of Bush’s victims. Bush didn’t bother to protect the journalists he has gotten kiilled. Jill Carroll, like Guilietta Sgrena, is lucky to be alive.

  138. Dan Burry Says:

Imus has been caught on camera egging his cohorts on with such tripe in the past. He says “No.. no… no…”but the camera has caught him encouraging their so called “comments”. It’s a shame because Imus in his interviews is generally good and informative but his right wing background of friends and supporters own him and he is there to spread the morning’s talking points for them.
Biggest bunch of phonies on the air…. and let’s not talk about his so called “ranch” for “kids with cancer”… Everytime someone does a genuine inquiry about it…. out come the politicos to protect the sleaze ball king of AM radio.

Amazing. Posts 126 and 131 are the only ones that seem to get it.

    Schtick.

I’m so far left, that I consider Hilary Clinton a republican and deeply regret voting for Kerry in 2004. I should’ve written in Nader, who wasn’t on the ballot here. To see these posts on a web site with “Progress” in the name is mind boggling. Whine. If blogs had existed when transgressive performance artists like Karen Finley and Jim Roche were doing their thing, uncomprehending masses like the posters here would have lynched them.

Also, no one here mentions that her captors killed her interpreter. Her appreciation for the way she was treated seems…quite odd and deserving of attention. To not consider “Stockholm Syndrome” because of PC concerns would be pathologically naive.

  144. IChiWawa Says:

People - Get a grip. The word is that Carroll made the tape in the burkha Imus and Crew referenced thinking it was for the Arab news networks. That is why she wore the ridiculous headgear, repeatedly said what great guys her captives were, and never referenced that when she was abducted, her translator was brutally murdered.

This should give everyone a good idea how brave and unbiased J Carrol really is.

  154. Massachusetts Liberal Says:

#55 - No no no….satire is not gratuitous bile, it is the exaggerated portrayal of something with the purpose of highlighting its unintended foolishness. Bernard McGurk is no Jonathan Swift. How exactly was this woman satirized? If you believe, and I’m sure these boneheads do, that she was in Iraq working to have Americans and Iraqis killed, it would make sense as satire. And that’s the real purpose—call it satire so the audience concludes that she must be anti-American, when all she was doing was humanitarian. Imus does this shit all the time—he passes off gratuitous slander as satire. Witness McGurk’s characterization of Bill Clnton as a “rapist”. He never fails to use the word when talking about Clinton, and he should be prosecuted for it, I don’t care if Clinton is a public figure or not.

  155. Mercury G Kornblow Says:

That’s why I only listen to Air America for talk.

Sure it’s biased but what the most offensive thing they say on there? That Bush should be arrested and tried for war crimes?

That isn’t even offensive. Just unlikely!

  157. Mercury G Kornblow Says:

When Imus calls Rumsfeld a “war criminal”, it’s not satire or humour, and no one here mentions it. Imus managed to elicit an actuall anti-war rant from Chris Matthews, of al people. It was posted at C&L the other day. Now Chris Matthews is a right-wing propagandist, but Imus elicited stronger anti-war sentiment from him than I’ve ever heard from Kerry or Clinton. Imus actually approaches being “fair and balanced” - he’s rude to everyone, in a way that Al Franken would call “funny-on-the-square”

(how Imus can endorse an undercover neocon wingnut like McCain is kind of off-putting, though)

If you don’t like it, don’t listen.

  158. Mercury G Kornblow Says:

162 - the most offensive thing on Air America is how Rndi Rhoades was unbelievably rude to Ralph Nader in the stations first month of broadcasts. Ranting is ranting, and Randi’s show is no less tedious than Sean Hannity, may his vocal chords lock up.

  159. ElectricBassPlayer Says:

#162 PS: I remember catching a snipped of Imus about a year ago and there was a female co-host on. . . she ripped a male co-host royally, and he couldn’t reply. He was basically speechless.

At the time I thought she was being a bitch but maybe I just missed the context. He may have been one of these two morons in the segment saying something equally moronic, and, like a bully, wasn’t able to defend himself when justifiably attacked. I do remember Imus let her continue to browbeat the guy without comment.

  160. ElectricBassPlayer Says:

BTW, back to address the original question.

Helping people in foreign lands less fortunate than ourselves is one of the most noble pursuits a person can take. Instead of staying home to build a personal fortune, they forsake the benefits of living here to help people on the ground.

Carroll has “gone native” out of RESPECT for the local people’s customs. People here scream about immigrants not learnng English, or wearing a burka in public, yet it’s no less offensive to the average Iraqi for a woman to walk among them in Western clothes? Come on.

But I wouldn’t expect conservative Americans — and unfortunately some not-so-conservative — to have any empathy for anyone different than ourselves. We don’t have a lock on righteousness. In fact, it’s that failure to understand and respect other cultures that got us trapped in Iraq in the first place.

    Sorry, just a rant.
