BREAKING: Tom DeLay Will Not Seek Reelection; Will Leave Congress ‘Within Months’

TIME Magazine reports:

Rep. Tom DeLay, whose iron hold on the House Republicans melted as a lobbying corruption scandal engulfed the Capitol, told TIME that he will not seek reelection and will leave Congress within months. Taking defiant swipes at “the left” and the press, he said he feels “liberated” and vowed to pursue an aggressive speaking and organizing campaign aimed at promoting foster care, Republican candidates and a closer connection between religion and government.

UPDATE: MSNBC’s Chris Matthews spoke to Tom DeLay this evening and talked about his conversation on Scarborough Country –

CHRIS MATTHEWS: I was just on the phone Joe with U.S. Congressman Tom DeLay of Texas, fighting for reelection. He told me tonight that he’s going to withdraw from the race tomorrow. He’s not going to seek re-election. He told me the following, the reasons he gave. He thought although the polls showed him losing, going down, he thought he had a 50/50 chance of winning. He said the beating that he’s going to take between now and November would make it very hard for him to win. He thought he might be able to reverse it but it would be very had reverse the polling trend…He said he’s going to spend the rest of his career working with conservative organizations with whom he has great relationship and continue to be a leader in the conservative movement but outside Congress. That’s from the word from Tom DeLay himself, just on the phone with me.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: Chris, you obviously saw the breaking new this weekend. Tony Rudy, his former of chief of staff going to jail for an unknown number of years. Others around him going to jail. Do you think this has to do with Republican politics or Tom DeLay spending his time and energy defending himself in lawsuits or in prosecutions?

CHRIS MATTHEWS: I have no doubt, Joe, it’s a fair estimate. We can assume without a lot of editorial judgment, a lot of analysis, that the bad news has accumulated through both the Abramoff case and now this, and of course his problems with Ronnie Earle down in Texas itself.

UPDATE II: DeLay out by “late May or mid-June“:

The congressman, who informed party leaders of his decision late Monday, said his departure from office would depend on the congressional schedule, but he said he expected it would be in late May or mid-June.

DeLay said he planned to move to a house he has in Virginia near Washington, D.C. By doing so, he would no longer be eligible to run for Congress in Texas.

Hopefully he will be speaking and organizing behind bars.

Delay,Card…tired of bailing water, leaving the fast sinking ship.

I heard on MSNBC that he’s also planning on immediately moving from Texas to Virginia.

Of all the corrupt shitbags in Washington, this is the one I wanted most to get what he deserves. Man I hate this guy. Although I’m elated with this news, I’ll probably have an orgasm when he gets indicted (it’s inevitable). Not sure what I’ll do when he is convicted. Was that too much info?

  5. Badmoodman says:

Soon the buzz surrounding DeLay will approximate that of a depressed bee in a Tupperware container. Significance is a goal and a curse.

  6. Arne Langsetmo says:

“Foster care”, eh? You mean he wants a “mentor program” so he doesn’t become somebody’s little b*tch in a couple of months…

You think he saw the handwriting on the wa… — ummm, sorry, — indictment?

    Cheers,

  7. MagnumDB says:

He’ll still be an influential figure, and I am sure will continue to raise money for the Republicans. Perhaps he thinks he can work with lobbyists outside of congress, so it will be more difficult for him to get caught. Maybe he thinks the penalty to do what he’s been doing OUTSIDE of congress will be much less.

Either way.. I am sure he has future plans to be a bad guy in some other way.

  8. Spudge_Boy says:

    Well, somebody has got to:

“Ding dong the witch is dead, the witch is dead, the witch is dead. Which old witch? The wicked with is deeeeaaaaaaad!!!”

See, there is a God. This is proof.

  9. Badmoodman says:

DeLay “vowed to pursue . . . a closer connection between religion and government.”
The simple and unlitigious truth is politics and religion are now as
permanent and fundamental as helmets and hat hair, except they go together like waxed fruit and French dressing.

  10. katy says:

“and a closer connection between religion and government”
these guys just don’t get it…the Constitution, that is…

    Comment by carsick — April 3, 2006 @ 10:40 pm

Is Texas outsourcing their prisoners to Virginia now?

  13. SusiQ says:

The decision came just three days after his former deputy chief of staff, Tony C. Rudy, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and corruption charges, telling federal prosecutors of a criminal enterprise being run out of DeLay’s leadership offices.

    Badmoodman – just kidding..

I LOVE the news. Now if we can get rid of the big guys: Rove, Cheney, Rummy

    time will tell….

  17. Ergt Earpp says:

I have to admit that I haven’t been this relieved since Newt (another ethical giant) left in shame.

What I never understand about these fellow is their cling to “religious” (foster care/closer religion and politics) all when their goal is gaming the system (screwing people out of a voice or vote) and money influence.

I guess they must think that that “eye of the needle” parable is not really Biblical, because their whole game is money, influence, control.

  18. AXIOM says:

Mr Delay. Your Heart is Laden with Guilt and it is Heavy with Sin.
I suggest that you do all you can to lighten that because it will not be the Republicans nor the Democrats that Judge you.

The Judge you will face Knows not of your “Politics” nor does he care about your Politics.

The Green Hand of Death Awaits your Weighing at the Scales Mr Delay.

  19. wisedup says:

Good news, now tom will have time to go help Katface Harris with her election with his little hammer.

  20. AXIOM says:

Perhaps he shall come to you in your sleep, Mr Delay.
Know this O man, ALL of YE, when your Body Goes to Shaking and the Earth does not move, HE is upon you.
When you Wake up at night Mr Delay and you Find that YOU cannot Move, or Speak, you are but a motionless Head upon a Pillow, you will KNOW that what I speak.

    Doubt me not.

  21. For Truth says:

For whatever the reason, this is the most honorable thing I have seen him do.

  22. leoger says:

Moving to Va .Hmmmmm! Be a lobbyist ,before or after jail !

  23. prabhata says:

DeLay will be as influential as Abramoff is after his conviction.

  24. liberal elite says:

Hell is watching Chris Matthews interview Tom DeLay.

  25. Cyra Brown says:

Holy Matrimony, Batman! Will wonders never cease? I bet there are some queasy stomachs right now over at Fox “News”. Just…wow.

  26. prostratedragon says:

Hopefully he will be speaking and organizing behind bars.

I really misinterpreted that at first, thinking of the man behind Winkie’s in Mulholland Drive (D’oh! You mean prison bars… ). And yet as profoundly as I detest DeLay for thinking it his right and privilege to dismantle truly representative government, I have to admit that For Truth has a point.

  27. Matthew J. Price says:

If there’s one thing I know, it is that one has to believe in God and have faith in Jesus Christ. One has to believe that there is a Hell. If there is no Hell, then there can be no Heaven.

Also, if I didn’t belive in Hell, then what I am saying is that Tom Delay for all his crimes against his own people is going to go to the same place as I do when I die. I cannot accept this. Tom Delay is a monster, a gold-digger, a psychopathic liar, and a Narcisist. Believing that one day Tom Delay will get his “just rewards” is the thing that keeps me going. It is the thing that helps me press on.

  31. Skeptic says:

Hurrah!. I still hope he ends up in jail, but this is very good news. I hope Tom DeLay doesn’t move to Virginia. There are a sufficiency of greedy ba*tards here without him.

  32. DrSinker says:

“Even though I thought I could win, it was a little too risky,” DeLay said.

As opposed to like, you know, BREAKING THE LAW?

  33. Mark says:

Screw DeLay he is dropping only because he probably has a pretty good idea that he will soon be bunking with the dukester. I have only this to say kick them while they fall and keep kicking them shile they are down. Make them pay for all the shit they have done to this country in the last six years. Delay should end up in Huntsville for what he did, but he will probably end up on house arrest with an ankle bracelet. The saddest thing is that every charge against him could be proven beyond a doubt, he could openly admit guilt and 30% of the population would still think he was railroaded, when the reality is that he is a first degree shitbag.

  34. Colorado Jyms says:

35- Your right, they should all be kicked long and hard for the crimes they have done. Unfortunately, none of them will serve as much time as Martha. She had the misfortune of being a woman after all.

  35. AvengingAngel says:

For Time’s coverage of the Delay announcement as well as the original Galveston County Daily News piece, see:

  36. oldtree says:

if the country doesn’t fix things,
he will go to jail and then become a lobbyist. He may strike up old relations with a criminal element that may be known to him.
if we fix things, he will go to jail, and he will do community service as restitution, forever.

  37. Jay Randal says:

Good riddence to Tom DeLay! He needs to go back to Texas forever and become a cockroach exterminator > only thing he was good at > lol.

  38. Fred Freesqueeze says:

    This is such great news….but,

this means that the GOP will have a better chance of holding that seat and the house and continuing their desecrating of the constitution.

I would have preferred the November headline “DELAY LOSES BIG TO DEDICATED REFORMER”

  39. MagnumDB says:

  57. TJM says:

What would keep him from moving? Is there some Texas statute that would prevent him? To the extent he were to go on trial,he’ll attend or face the prospect of a bounty hunter coming to get him. Think that pursuit would make it onto CNN?

Agreed. I’d imagine that the Donk states ought to be red as they’re already pink and that site would be a good name for this one since Progressive, Red and Communist are all names for the same failed but still murderous ideology.

Nonsense. If you really believed all that you wouldn’t place your trust in the party of Treason, Abortion and Sodomy. Neither would you be so sure of Tom Delay’s final reckoning. If you weren’t a Walking Dead Loser you’d be horrified that anyone should find themselves damned for eternity. Just thought you ought to know.

  64. G.W.SuperChrist says:

Is that a fact? Who is “they” and give me one good reason why I or any red blooded American should care what “they” think? By the way hearing the words “unethical, immoral and hateful” coming from a leftist fuckwit is amusing. Keep up the good work.

  69. progressive and proud says:

Thanks IRI, we will keep up the good work. Hateful is bad for your blood pressure, again keep up the good work.

  70. ElectricBassPlayer says:

#70, “Keep up the good work.”

    We will.

It’s refreshing to see the good guys win one. I feel no joy in Tom DeLay leaving even though I think he’s a horror of a human being. He represents a dangerous schism in America, a black streak in the conscience of the country.

We can only keep up the good fight. We’re the white hats here, and we know it. We have goodness and justice on our side, and those will always win out.

  71. Quadrajet says:

OK new guy here’s the scoop from iRi who just happens to live in Delay’s district. Big deal. I never liked the guy and his moving on means there might be a chance we can hire a conservative to fill his spot. DeLay was a big spending Republican like George.

DeLay helped George and the rest of the Third Way Socialists in the Republican party to spend my money like a drunken Democrat in a ghetto district. I’m glad he’s gone. If you idiots on the left weren’t so brain fried and oblivious to what’s really gong on in the Republican party you’d be sorry to see him go. The Republicans are the new Democrats. The Donks of course have destroyed themselves by morphing into the party of the fringe loon Filthy Left. Bottom line….we’re all screwed.

  74. Marie says:

Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies, everyone goes – there’s gonna be a party tonight.
Actually, he will probably remain pretty influential in Congress, particularly as long as the Rethugs hold the power, and he resides in Virginia. But for now, I will enjoy the headlines.

  75. kindness says:

I don’t feel your pain, I’m too busy dancing with glee. I can’t wait for DeLay to die so I can have a kegger at his gravesite & we can all have one big piss on his grave party.

How’s that for liberal understanding irightie?

  76. Sharon Cox says:

Again I agree with one tiny little thing [R] had to print. “Were all screwed”….Nothing else . Untill we can turn around this mess the present bunch have created………Blessings

  78. Massachusetts Liberal says:

The way men like Delay & Gingrich bow out is pretty lame. Gingrich gave up his leadership position but not his seat. Delay says he won’t run again, but doesn’t give up his seat. In the British Parliament, a member would resign in a show of humility. Nobody ever resigns here, because there’s no integrity. Delay will never change. He’ll probably be running the K Street Project from his prison cell, arranging payoffs and having lobbyists whacked via coded messages.

  79. Jay Randal says:

DeLay must be afraid to live in Texas or he smells money to steal in Virginia > lol.

  80. Quadrajet says:

The ratbastartRepublifascistfucktards are nowhere near as “ethical” as you’d like to think they are “Right between the I’s”.

Don’t forget, they tried to alter their so-called “ethics” rules to allow an indicted congress member to retain their leadership position, then they got “bashed” for their sucking-up to corruption.

I’ll bet you think that an attorney that has indicted/prosecuted more Democrats than Republicans MUST be partisan when going after the corruption and calumny of ‘ol Rep. Tommy DeLay, right?

You and he probably get along real well, both being former/current cheerleaders for the entrenched corruption of the Republican party. I just don’t think you look as good in a cheerleaders skirt as you think you do.

  87. I-RIGHT-I says:

The ratbastartRepublifascistfucktards are nowhere near as “ethical” as you’d like to think they are “Right between the I’s”.

    Comment by Democrat Soldier

I’ve never made any claims to anyone’s high standards of ethics and morals yet I know a snake when I see one and the current Democratic leadership’s pandering to the Treason, Abortion and Sodomy crowd here in the USA and the back stabbing Euroweasels across the pond and the Muslim headchoppers in the Mid East is enough of an incentive for me to put up with some political corruption in the Republican party.

I’m no fan of DeLay, no blind cheerleader for Bush but I’m certainly not on board with the global elitists and Transnational Progressives and the freakish assortment of fringe loon groups that are attracted to the neo-liberal agenda for the USA.

  88. Paul in Mexico says:

DeLay woke up yesterday morning and saw the handwriting on the wall.

This is not a resignation to aid the party, not on your life. It had come to pass that he and his staff were running a criminal enterprise out of his office. This is a RICO offense, and so DeLay saw the handwriting in big letters on the wall.

He said to himself,”self” you got millions of dollars in your campaign fund, and it can be used for your defense so you better use it for that, rather than lose the election.

You see, DeLay has been paying for weekly polls in his district using a local firm who report to him that the longtime close friends and allies are voting against him. He has a list of names a mile long of former friends, allies and associates who are deserting him like a sinking ship.

Now old Tom believes in religion so much that he started a “tithe system” in the pukes section of the house. Each puke HAD to give so much of his campaign contributions to the DeLay fund. Him pulling out and using the money for his criminal defense is going to piss off a lot of repuglicans.

His next job? He is moving to Virginia and will be in charge of, guess what? THE K STREET PROJECT.

    Comment by Paul in Mexico

Big deal even if it turns out to be true. Donks don’t have a leg in the next election anyway. You couldn’t buy a f’ing seat in congress even if you had the money…which you don’t. As I’ve tried to explain to your less intellectually endowed brethren more than once, the Republicans have taken over the liberal socialist work of empowering losers and paying for with my money for whatever touchy feely cause gets the most votes from the whining and seething mob. You losers have noting left but homosexuals, nasty men and women, a few animal and tree hugging dimwits and hard core Marxists. You’re finished as a party. Thanks for destroying out two party system. Now we have no choice.

“Lampson couldn’t beat Wizzo the Clown let alone someone as popular as DeLay. The people in this district know dang well what a bunch of leftwingfucktards you Texas Donks are and they’ll have none of it, thanks anyway.”

IRI, you really are a moron’s moron aren’t you? Even Delay himself concedes that he was facing an up hill battle against Lampson – who by the way, has won many elections right here in SE Texas – and gives that as the reason for his withdrawal you fool.

  93. Dean Moriarity says:

Why does Foster Care have to be a religious thing? My wife and I are foster parents, and devout, evangelical atheists. Why does the religious right feel the need to co-opt every good deed as being religious in its origin? don’t get me wrong, this country needs a lot more foster parents, and certainly religious people would be prime candidates (gotta earn those divine favors), but it just irritates me that there is a presumption of religiosity to everything like this.
