Boehner Gushes Over DeLay: ‘The Country Owes Tom a Great Debt of Gratitude’

In his campaign to replace Tom DeLay as House Majority Leader, Rep. John Boehner painted himself as a break from the past and a force for real reform:

WALLACE: OK. Congressman Shadegg, who just entered the race, and we’re about to hear from, says that neither you nor Roy Blunt represent a clean break from the scandals of the past. How do you respond?

BOEHNER: I’ve got a long record of real reform in Congress, and I think I can lead the effort to bring about the kind of reforms the American people are expecting from Congress.

But today Boehner showed his true colors, through a gushing ode to the criminally-indicted retiring Rep. Tom DeLay:

The country owes Tom a great debt of gratitude for helping lead America in a new direction — a direction outlined in the Contract with America that saw balanced budgets, historic welfare reforms, lower taxes, regulatory relief, and a renewed respect for the sanctity of life.

He has served our nation with integrity and honor, and I’m honored to call him my colleague and friend.

DeLay may be gone soon, but his House stands strong.

  1. Kenny H says:

If I ever cross paths with Tom Delay, I’ll be sure to thank him. Rampant corruption, bribery, cronyism, record deficits, growing poverty, lower real wages, higher unemployment, a tarnished international reputation. Thanks, Tom.

  2. DrSinker says:

Actually, I think Tom owes the country a couple of years behind bars.

  3. Drew Mackenzie says:

Hehehe… no one is loyal to DeLay, they’re loyal to DeLay’s money connections.

  4. slappymagoo says:

Well, I sorta agree on one thing…

With the hard work of Delay & others like him, America definitely has a debt it can never repay.

  5. Godfry Daniel says:

    (sound of toilet flushing)

  6. Zookeeper says:

“I’ve got a long record of real reform in Congress…”

That’s what he was doing when handed out tobacco checks on the House floor. Cleared that up.

  7. Democrat Soldier says:

The country owes Tom a great debt of gratitude for helping lead America in a new direction — a direction outlined in the Contract with America that saw balanced budgets (Under Pres. Clinton, NOT under Pres. Bush), historic welfare reforms (More people on wlefare under Pres. Bush than under Pres. Clinton) ,lower taxes (at the expense of a balanced budget and introducing historically MASSIVE debt), regulatory relief (at the expense of the safety of mine workers), and a renewed respect for the sanctity of life (except for the lives of our soldiers and Americans on Sept. 11th.)

I will agree with #4, we now have debt that cannot be repaid by Americans any time soon!

  8. Paul in Mexico says:

The pukes are spinning this every which way, but the real reason that DeLay caved in is because the other shoe is about to drop.

He is going to be indicted by the feds on numerous charges.

  9. Evil Spaniard says:

He has served our nation with integrity and honor, and I’m honored to call him my colleague and friend.

But, but… he’s not being judged by his political crimes? He is not retiring by age or illness, or dead in the call of duty. I think this doesn’t qualify as “integrigy and honor”.

  10. Antagonist says:

The only crimes committed are those by Ronnie Earle, who sought to destroy DeLay. Bogus money laundering charges, grand jury shopping…

  11. GURU says:

Boehner and DeLay both are greazers.

  12. dlet says:

Somebody just pour some salt on that leech.

Boehner has to kiss Delay’s arse. In a little while Delay will be his new K-street contact. Can you imagine that. Delay, a disgraced congressman, will hold the purse strings of the Republican politicians and make them dance to his liking. Sickening. The Republican party is a bunch of criminals. How many are in this administration that were presidentially pardoned of their convictions? How many names in the future will there be? If this is not a talking point I don’t know what is.

  14. Jack says:

These were all the same kinds of things that were said about and by Duke Cunningham, too. Then can the realization, apologizing, and crying. And now Duke is spending 8.5 years in jail, and his ill-gotten assets auctioned.

There seems to be a pattern to these things.

I’m tired of politicians choosing party over country.

If Delay was good, then the character of America is in great decline. :-(

  15. Bruce Gorton says:

    DS

and a renewed respect for the sanctity of life (except for the lives of our soldiers and Americans on Sept. 11th.)

You are forgetting about the lives of anybody who cannot afford medical treatment.

  16. big papa says:

I predict Boehner’s future will dovetail with that of his idol

    Tom Deadlay

  17. Zookeeper says:

#16 – I, too, see that in my crystal ball.

  18. kerry says:

Integrity??? Honor??? Man, those words have really changed meaning here in the last five years or so. These repugs no nothing of integrity. Nothing.

  19. Bush Bites says:

I HOPE HE DEMS ARE CATALOGING VIDEO OF THESE NICE TRIBUTES TO TOM DELAY.

THEY SHOULD MAKE GOOD FODDER FOR COMMERCIALS THIS FALL.

  21. Mark says:

We don’t owe him any thanks for leading us in a new direction because the direction is down the path of corruption and ruin. He is a traitor to the constituion which he is sworn to uphold. Hmmm, what do the right wingers say we should do with traitors?

  22. WiscoDuk says:

You are forgetting about the lives of anybody who cannot afford medical treatment.

    From a Detroit news circulation-

Stimmell said the drop-off is due in large part to the lack of a major flu outbreak over the winter and poor economic conditions that lead people to not seek medical treatment.

    http://www.crainsdetroit.com/cgi-bin/news.pl?newsId=8287

According to my niece who works for the hospital- it’s much worse than the article describes. She says- “Very few people coming into the hospital have health insurance- most have waited far too long before seeking medical attention. Often far too late for effective medical treatment- especially cancer related.”

Also- My sisters doctor (Detroit “wealthy”suburb) just laid off 3 of her personnel because of lack of patients. I’d be willing to bet this is a nation-wide experience.

    Good job Tom and friends!

  23. Marie says:

Sure Boehner is gushing — he’s da man.
Will he still be singing Delay’s praises when Delay is found guilty?

  24. Zookeeper says:

    #23 – Tom who?

  25. WaltTheMan says:

Parker has loaded three semis destined for the WH, each full of pens for the presidential pardons of corrupt Republicans. They had planned to used Rummy’s sympathy machine but had a change of plan when they found that each had to be individually signed by the president. By the time that W leaves office in February 2007, his right arm will look like Popeye’s.

  26. Ryan Neat says:

So now we’re supposed to ‘thank’ and be ‘grateful’ to Delay for stealing from the american people, helping drive us to a bad war, and spending unwisely like a drunk sailor? Yeah, right.

  27. Solitaire says:

I definitely owe him. I owe him a kick in the face and a noose over the nearest tree.
He used his money and influence to disenfranchise me and mine. If the man wants to be appreciated for what he did, send him my way.

  28. Mikey says:

“He has served our nation with integrity and honor, and I’m honored to call him my colleague and friend.”

Depends on what the meaning of “has” is.

  29. walter66 says:

maybe he got tired of free golf….

  30. Anchorage Activist says:

Balanced budgets? Regulatory relief? What planet does Boehner live on? We have an $8.0 trillion national debt, deficits as far as the eye can see, and if the USA Patriot Act is regulatory “relief”, then I could stand a lot less of it. This illustrates how the national Republican Party has been hijacked by neo-cons whose vision takes precedence over reality.

  31. GURU says:

We owe Tom DeLay more Vitalis.

  32. Jay Randal says:

Boehner must resign alongside DeLay because they are both corrupt scum! Only gutter trash praise the Hammer from Texas! Shame on the entire GOP!

  33. demattack says:

Let’s appreciate that lying scum exterminator when his buzzard eaten body is lying in the Texas sun.

  34. Marty Didier says:

The current Political climate isn’t very friendly towards those perceived to be involved in corruption. So to me, it might be customary to give a polite sendoff to he who is embroiled in controversy and has chosen to do the right thing. It’s a little long in coming, but it’s good it happened.

However, saving the ship is the new question as DeLay becomes old business. The REAL problem isn’t yesterday, it’s really all about what does the future bring? What’s on the horizon with regard to corruption, Indictments and all that jazz?

I’ve mentioned many times in the past that I was in a crime family for more than 26 years who’s directly linked to very wide spread Political Corruption and a lot more. What I’ll tell you is that you haven’t seen anything yet! Better invest in seat belts for your computer chair so you don’t fall out and hurt yourself!
