Senior U.S. Officials “Want to Hit Iran”

Joseph Cirincione is a respected non-proliferation expert at the Carnegie Endowment, one who admits he “was the last remaining person in Washington who believed President George W. Bush when he said that he was committed to a diplomatic solution.” Yet, in a new column for Foreign Policy magazine, he says he now believes that senior U.S. officials have already made up their minds to attack Iran:

For months, I have told interviewers that no senior political or military official was seriously considering a military attack on Iran. In the last few weeks, I have changed my view. In part, this shift was triggered by colleagues with close ties to the Pentagon and the executive branch who have convinced me that some senior officials have already made up their minds: They want to hit Iran. … What I previously dismissed as posturing, I now believe may be a coordinated campaign to prepare for a military strike on Iran.

The ramifications of such an attack could be disastrous. At a minimum, it would likely “rally the Iranian public around an otherwise unpopular regime, inflame anti-American anger around the Muslim world, and jeopardize the already fragile U.S. position in Iraq.” But most importantly, a military strike would “almost certainly speed…up” Iran’s nuclear weapons development by sparking a “crash nuclear program that could produce a bomb in a few years.”

  2. james risser says:

    yes, it will happen.

by the way, Here is a link to seymour hersh from Januaury 17, 2005. and others too were writing about this in late 2004 and 2005.

    Here is a quote:

“The secret missions in Iran, Hersh said, have been authorized in order to prevent similar embarrassment in the event of military action there.

‘The planning for Iran is going ahead even though Iraq is a mess,’ Hersh said. ‘I think they really think there’s a chance to do something in Iran, perhaps by summer, to get the intelligence on the sites.’

He added, ‘The guys on the inside really want to do this.’

Hersh identified those inside people as the ‘neoconservative’ civilian leadership in the Pentagon. That includes Rumsfeld, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and Undersecretary of Defense Doug Feith — ‘the sort of war hawks that we talk about in connection with the war in Iraq.’

And he said the preparation goes beyond contingency planning and includes detailed plans for air attacks:

‘The next step is Iran. It’s definitely there. They’re definitely planning … But they need the intelligence first.‘”

#1 beat me to the punch. Striking Iran will be much, much, much more serious than was striking Iraq. Kiss your asses goodbye.

Marketing will start 2 months before the midterms. Looks like we’ll be starting wars every 2 years to give the Republicans their wedge. Do we really expect this team of incompetents to wage a real war? This will be a complete and utter disaster. Democrats best get out in front of this real quick.

Democrats were out in front of this in the 90’s. Another problem they left for the next administration to solve.

Gen. Anthony Zinni, USMC,Commander, U.S. Central Command
    Thursday, January 7, 1999

Q Just a follow-up with one short one. Could you capsulize, summarize, the long-term strategy?

GEN. ZINNI: Yeah, I think I can do it in less than 25 words. You know, my mission is to maintain stability in the region. My mission is to ensure the hegemons in the region, including Saddam Hussein, not be allowed to pursue their hegemonic designs. And that can be described in their ability to punish their own people, no-fly, no-drive zones; their ability to threaten their neighbors, move forces to the Kuwaiti border; develop weapons of mass destructions and delivery systems and shoot them.

There is not just one threat out there, or one potential threat. I mean, we see the terrorist and extremist threat out there. We still are wondering which way Iran is going, whether there’s moderation or not. I mean, I know you know all the issues and concerns.

Our job is stability. It’s easy to look at Iraq, and look at one problem, and look at a short-term solution. And, as you said, everybody in this town and elsewhere in the world, has a short-term solution, which is about one paragraph and sounds easy on paper. As the guy that might have to execute it, it ain’t that easy. And containment is hard. It could be long term. But if in the end it’s stability and it keeps all the global interests in there protected, and our friends protected in the region, and the people in the region protected, then I think it’s worth the price.

Neocons suffer from psychophallystisis. Honestly, they have never seen a military attack that doesn’t give them wood. If they nuked England, they would find some reason why it was GREAT! I don’t think Fred Barnes has any gonads of his own. They are all the wimpiest human beings on their own. Only brave when someone else is doing the fighting for them…….then orgasm.

When Iran invades Iraq to pay back the nearest available Americans, then there will be hell to pay. But not for the filthy cowardly neocons. No they will be back here at home; safe from any direct carnage—busy justifying why they are always right about some meddling or bombing or invasion or USA sponsored terrorism (a.k.a “freedom fighters”). A damned cowardly lot of stratego players, the lot of them.

Hey, whatever it takes to hold on the political power.

Here we go again, cleaning up another crisis unresolved by the Democrats.

    Cohen Says Iran Testing Missile

    Associated Press
    June 17, 1997

Iran’s air force has conducted its first test launches of a newly acquired anti-ship cruise missile , Defense Secretary William Cohen disclosed today in arguing that Iran is a threat to world commerce

The United States is concerned about Iran’s increasingly sophisticated military clout, particularly its arsenal of cruise missiles , Cohen said at a news conference. Because they fly low, cruise missiles are difficult to detect on radar

Cohen, on the other hand, has said the Clinton administration will not ease its stance against Iran until Iran ends its support for terrorism, gives up trying to develop nuclear weapons and stops trying to undermine the Middle East peace process. Iran denies such conduct

  15. Jeffrey Stewart says:

He is a complete idiot, ne’er-do-well and everything he touches turns to crap so, yes, he probably will continue to ruin the U.S. with a military stirke on Iran. How else will his poll numbers rise?

  16. Desert Fox says:

What do Democrats propose we do? Appeasement?

    Secretary of State Madeleine Albright
    Remarks before the American-Iranian Council
    March 17, 2000

“It is no secret that, for two decades, most Americans have viewed Iran primarily through the prism of the U.S. Embassy takeover in 1979, accompanied as it was by the taking of hostages, hateful rhetoric and the burning of the U.S. flag. Through the years, this grim view is reinforced by the Iranian Government’s repression at home and its support for terrorism abroad; by its assistance to groups violently opposed to the Middle East peace process; and by its effort to develop a nuclear weapons capability.”

  17. Erroll says:

The Democrats, in both houses of Congress, were timid, if not non-existent, in challenging Bush’s rationale to wage war against Iraq. Will they be just as pusillanimous questioniong this administration’s invasion and/or bombing plans against Iran? These same questions should be asked of the Republicans, who apparently have to be constantly reminded that they took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, which is in direct contrast to their continually placating the wishes and desires of this current corrupt and immoral administration.

  18. Ergy Earpp says:

Yes we all know that if George Bush happened to have blood in his stool, you idiots would say it’s Clintons fault.

Yes, of course that’s obvious! Waaa Waaa Waaa Clintons fault. Global warming CLintons fault. Jack Abramoff, Clintons fault. Why W. was AWOL, Clintons fault!!!

Before all of this asinine threatening and posturing IRAN WAS TURNING MODERATE. The more extreme we act, the more extreme they act.

This lesson is never learned by the ignorant.

WAAAAA WAAAA WAAAAA CLintons fault! He made the market crash. WAAAAH.

  19. James says:

The Republicans opposed Clinton’s attempts to assasinate bin laden and attack the sudanase target thought linked to al qaeda. There was some noise about Kosovo as well.

The issue there was that they were all air campaigns. Kosovo targeted most of the civilian infrastructure after military targets were exhausted.

That’s what they want to do here. Honestly, I would rather Iran not have the bomb so all the other neighboring countries don’t build one. Israel isn’t an excuse. It’s a democracy with some sane leadership.

This is also a losing position.

If Democrats want to be known as the people that let Iran nuke NYC down the road – an exageration but enabling a nuke test – that’s a real negative for our party.

Targeted strikes do not equal neoconservatism. There’s NO REASON to change Iran. There is plently of reason to destroy their installed infrastructure .

As forthe terrorist garbage, if Iran followed through no one would deal with them. Their economy would implode. Their people would revolt if the oil revenues did not resume. You might even get a modernizer.

  20. Marie says:

Over the years, in my opinion, Joseph Cirincione has earned credibility. And when I read this piece yesterday, I felt a chill up my spine. I believe the Bush cabal has a plan to begin another crusade. Bush did not misspeak in 2001 when he uttered the word crusade — it was a Freudian slip — an inadvertant admission of the grand plan.

  21. Ergy Earpp says:

Actually, there was a problem with Albright, Cohen, and Woolsey. They were too damned hawkish, if not war mongering in their postures.

This was a problem of the previous administration….they adopted the tough posturing of the past two administrations. Of course, they never supported Saddam, so that’s a little better than H.W. or R.R.

The DLC is done too. One more attack and there will be no support for the Lieberman position.

  22. pgw says:

what a great idea! what a fantastic way to win the hearts and minds of muslims all over the world.

  23. mparker says:

    They can bomb Iran.
    They can nuke Iran too.
But, they cannot invade Iran without drafting YOUR children. They will declare martial law and they will begin a draft. Those concentration camps being built in the US would be for whom? All who disagree, who are Muslim, who are gay …etc.

Welcome to the Neocon world. Take pictures. It won’t last long. None of us will.

  24. Jay Randal says:

Bush is certified insane and wants to ignite global WWIII, so his Regime plans on bombing Iran probably by the end of this April, which means destruction for our nation in the end! Shame on all those fools in Congress who are allowing this to happen!

  25. Alexandra says:

It’s not too surprising that the stage is being set to strike Iran. We all know that if Iraq had gone more according to plan (wait, what’s that? Oh right, there wasn’t really a plan period beyond the deposing Sadaam part!) we would already have been trading bombs with Iran. Marketing? The whole nuclear capabilities issue with the UN? But the Security Council is balking against doing what the US wants? Can you say deja vu?
But now the administration has been really clever. They’ve got Europe almost tied down to supporting his war-happy initiative this time, because they’re more or less on the same page in terms of Iran being a threat. Maybe they don’t want to go to war, but Russia and China won’t even agree to sanctions, so the administration is going to be going nuts getting them to support us on this one. For those of you worried about the draft, this is crucial, because they WON’T do a draft, the administration don’t seem to understand the concept of collective self-sacrifice (really collective, not tongue-in-cheek collective). They will get the draftees from other countries to do it, and hey, we’re dismantling bases around the world, right? What else would those poor soldiers have to do with their time?
Iran was on the agenda from the beginning. I wasn’t sure if they’d actually go through with it or not because of the disaster they got us into in Iraq. But I forget; the President’s motto is after all “Stay the course.”

  26. Jay Randal says:

Yes post 30 > everyone who helps Bush to attack Iran is a fool and every Bush lover who thinks it is wonderful is a crazy lunatic as well!

  27. Brady says:

A military strike on Iran is something we can’t rule out. Now I believe the Administration should try for a diplomatic solution first, but we should also prepare for a military solution.

But it’s the only thing that could possibly get the GOP through the elections, so … why hasn’t the bombing started yet?

More focus needs to be put on Afghanistan and bin Laden. There’s no denying that.

And just so you know, if Iran threatens the U.S. with nuclear weapons, yes, I will volunteer.

“Secretary of State Madeleine Albright…” — Desert Fox

Albright’s perspective WAS NOT INHERENTLY SHARED BY THE PARTY. Your smear is false on its face.

“The Democrats, in both houses of Congress, were timid, if not non-existent, in challenging Bush’s rationale to wage war against Iraq.”

Oh, really. The Dem vote in the House was 60-40 NAY, with change of leader to the FIRST WOMAN TO HOLD THE POSITION OF MAJORITY LEADER.

You also fail to note the COERCION: the Wellstone assassination, the ANTHRAX attacks on our leaders (not theirs), the name-calling on the floor of the Congress, the LIES of nuclear potential spread far and wide in serial Executive impeachable acts, the media refusing to cover Dem responses, giving a false impression — THAT INCLUDES DEMOCRACY NOW!’S REFUSAL TO COVER DEMOCRATIC RESPONSES.

“this current corrupt and immoral administration.” Erroll

IS A COUP. The Rebuplican party is THOROUGHLY BUSHED. They have violated every tenet in the Constitution already, so why the pretense? The Dems are loyal; while the R leadership in Congress are CO-CONSPIRATORS against the nation.

Scapegoating the Dems does not solve our problem.

Bush is not ‘bumbling’ into another war. THIS WAR HAS BEEN PLANNED WELL IN ADVANCE, JUST LIKE IRAQ.

What we need is JUSTICE, and for Bush to RESIGN.

CALLING FOR THAT IS YOUR JOB, AND YOU CAN’T JUST FOIST IT OFF ON THE DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS. Scapegoating the minority is NOT a strategy with a chance of success.

  39. Paul in LA says:

    Sorry, position of MINORITY leader.

Btw, you may not be aware that the Congressional research budget is NIL. The Congress does not generally have the ability to gather data to disprove a lying Executive on intelligence. The Conyers Report (’Constitution in Crisis’), the Waxman reports (many), and other such reports have been promulgated on thin resources, AND THE EXECUTIVE HAS FAILED TO RESPOND TO ANY OF THEM.

Without the R leadership shifting the power of the Congress to FORMAL INVESTIGATIONS there is very little way to bring a successful counter forward, as Conyers, Fitzgerald, Waxman, and many others have said. THE SHITEHOUSE IS GUILTY OF MULTIPLE ACTS OF OBSTRUCTION OF CONGRESS, and the R Congress has blocked the REQUIRED impeachment proceedings from attending that violation of their oaths of office.

And the media has universally REFUSED to mention it.

So again, blaming the minority is KARL’S WORK. I hope you LOVE your pat on the head.

According to my friends in Iraq and elsewhere, serving with our armed services, the Military has been quietly shifting forces in preparation for an attack. The are thousands of troops on the Iraq side of the border, that while they are attempting to keep out the influx of terrorists, they are also preparing to repel any retaliation by Iran. Thousands more troops in the northern part of Iraq also have contingency plans to move to the border if Iran is attacked. The thought being that Iran will attempt to launch a ground war with U.S. forces if we go in and blow up there nuke program.

There also have been reports, some published some not, that the U.S. is moving more bombers to the gulf region. Rumor has it they are also bringing in a number of the larger cargo planes capable of quickly moving tanks and artillery.

I’m certain that you are right about this. As much as I am that he did not misspeak when he told an audience that we would NOT have an all volunteer army. the US is at war. Keep in mind his currently 0 for 2 on the battlefield -
We have not won in Afghanistan and the war there is far from over,
and, we are clearly losing in Iraq and things will get worse there as well.

The problem is why should we trust a proven loser to open a third
    front ???????

If he cannot win the first two how the heck is going to win a third ?????

I say we hold off as long as possible and wait for a real man to take office
    before we dive into Iran.

No one has ever accused the ‘Mayberry Machiavellis’ of being overly bright. BTW; if I get another draft notice, I WILL burn it this time, and shout in the streets “HELL NO,I WON’T GO!”. I did my bit for ‘king and country’ during Vietnam via the draft.

  76. ''Ian A.'' says:

    ”For King and the Country
    and the long dying day;
    It’s been this way
    for five long years,
Since we signed our souls away”.

  77. Fairly Oddparent says:

do you really think that the iranians just want to get along with us? let’s say we do nothing and let them finish their nuclear bomb…do you think they won’t use it? the liberals were chickenshits with hitler and they are that way now.

  78. terent says:

No one can effectively invade Iran and hold it long term. Iran is a republic of toughened people. Attacking Iran simply rasies the tension levels and is very conducive for certain people, groups and industries. It will finally lead to a worse form of mess than we have in Iraq, a liability that the world will pay for in the coming decades.
