when i used to live in chicago, i would sometimes be in the loop on weekends and was always both amused and pleased to see the parade of cars driving around, each displaying the flag of their respective home countries… it was literally an international latin american convention – el salvador, mexico, guatemala, honduras, costa rica, ecuador, colombia, peru, bolivia, and, of course, that “other”latin american country, puerto rico… i wasn’t at all offended… quite the contrary… i thought it was a wonderful demonstration of the american spirit where most of us are, after all, immigrants… i have my bedroom decorated with the flags of the various countries where i spend time in my work and as a part-time resident… i am proud of the united states but i am also proud of the countries that welcome me as a visitor…
About as antiAmerican as all those Mexicans down in Mexico waving American flag right after 9-11.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the rightwingers in this country didn’t have any trouble with David Koresh and the Branch Davidian’s Star of David flag flying over Mt. Carmel at Waco, Texas.
Depends on the neighborhood you live in…..
Speaking for myself, I live in the Rio Grande valley, the old Camino Real, and a highway of human culture stretching back centuries before Coronado set foot here.
I have chosen to settle here, amidst two predominately different cultures than mine own. I am a member of the minority now.
In the public schools there is a homogeny of students, and every morning they stand and say the pledge of allegiance to the United States of America.
They follow immediately with the pledge of allegiance to the State of New Mexico, and the symbol of the flag which signifies the union and blending of all cultures.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the rightwingers in this country didn’t have any trouble with David Koresh and the Branch Davidian’s Star of David flag flying over Mt. Carmel at Waco, Texas.
I do not believe it is “unAmerican” however, down here in Texas, many of the protestors who were protesting the immigration debate were waving Mexican flags and shouting that they were Americans not immigrants. If that is their point shouldn’t they have been waving American flags?
I am just confused by this and if someone could provide an explanation I would greatly appreciate it.
I don’t believe that there is anything wrong with being proud of ones heritage as we all come from somewhere. When my family moved from Ireland to Australia they where called ‘new australians’ not, irish, italian, croat. This gave us the profound sense that we where the newest of australians, not that we anything less than those that had been here for 2 to 5 generations. We absorbed our new country as it’s where we wanted to live more than anywhere else in the world. Some people do not have the luxury of wanting to live in the USA, but have to as its a land of great opportunity and maybe the only way out. Give them the same opportunities in their own country and maybe things would not be as they are.
People will always have links to where they are from, their names, there religion, even their food. But when some leaves there homeland for another, one should not see it as an extention of the birthplace. It should be a new place that we bring our culture to, but also absorbs from. I celebrate my irishness by drinking the occasional guinness, celebrating st.patricks day and having a thing for andrea corr. I celebrate my australianess by knowing our anthem, waving our flag and sounding/behaving like your average australian male. All because we felt like we where welcomed, we where adding value be that through digging trenches or packing shelves.
Make these people feel like they are doing you a favour, cause take it from me they are doing the things yor average american doesn’t feel like doing. And there is nothing wrong with these jobs it’s just our opinion of them. You need to make people feel like they are ‘new americans’ and then they’ll know the ‘Star Spangled Banner’, they’ll eat hamburgers and want to wave the flag.
Why do Americans feel the need to wave the Stars & Stripes flag to prove their nationalistic fervour, and to show just how American you are? Is it in the American Constitution that you have to wave an American flag, display an American flag on your houses or be up in arms if any other national flag is displayed on American soil? And let’s not forget those Stars & Stripes lapel pins that the politicians are so fond of, you’re un-American if you don’t wear one. How anally retentive can a nation and some of its citizens be about a bloody national flag.
Please stop it! This is what gets on a lot of my friends and family’s wicks, when they see Americans acting in such an insular way. That and shouting USA, USA at sporting events, such as the Ryder Cup and other events where the USA is competing against other countries or continents.
While watching the last Ryder Cup in 2004, which took place at the Oakland Hills Country Club, Michigan. I had to turn the volume down because the chanting of USA, USA, became unbearable.
I’m as patriotic as the next man, and during this year’s football World Cup in Germany, (that’s the soccer World Cup for the Americans, and yes the USA is involved), I will be cheering as loud as anyone for England. But there is a fine line to be tread between being patriotic, and being jingoistic and letting your nationalistic chest beating get the better of you.
And as for the US female golfers taking part in the Solheim Cup. How many American flags have to be on show, to let everybody know you are representing the USA. I think the uniforms give it away, do we need the fake Stars & Stripes flag tattoos on the faces, the flags on your golf bags and any other form of identification to let us know that you’re American. Not to mention looking like Stepford wives, and being made-up within an inch of your lives.
#16 – Nick, it’s called overcompensation. It’s quite embarassing. Many Americans actually believe the universe revolves around us. I don’t get the Stepford wife thing either, but whatever floats their boat!
How is displaying the flag of another country “un-American”? Aren’t we supposed to be the big “melting pot” of cultures? I thought we encouraged celebrating different cultures… I guess it depends on who we’re currently trying to keep out of the country.
If the people waving that flag are in the country ILLEGALLY, yes.
I am a hardcore progressive, but what the hell? What is so hard for people
to understand the difference between I-L-L-E-G-A-L and Immigrant?
It disgusts me to hear “they take the jobs Americans won’t.”
When the hell has that ever been applicable? It is a safe bet, that the companies making a profit off of these illegals’ work would still make a profit, even if they had
to pay a couple more bucks an hour to an American citizen (immigrant, or not). Wouldn’t that contribute to the American living standard?
How can liberals be for illegals, when American companies are walking on their backs?
Isn’t that exploitation? Someone, somewhere is getting wealthy off of these desperate people, and it’s disgusting…just as it’s disgusting to consider they won’t stay in their own country and cause change THERE. Countries of stature of the USA around the world all have immigration standards/policies, so maybe there’s a REASON?
To assume that a finite amount of jobs with an exanding population of ILLEGALS will sustain our economy is ridiculous.
“they take the jobs Americans won’t” BULLS*IT!!!!!
Americans have given up enough to immigrants. Legal ones, we welcome and embrace; illegals, we want to go back to wherever they’re proud of.
And as for them “doing the jobs Americans won’t”, my family worked out in the fields as migrants, and we are not hispanic; we were ‘Okies’ of Native American descent mixed with European immigrants’ blood, and we were grateful to have the jobs of pickin’ the fruits and vegetables that fed our great nation, moving from field to field, region to region and state to state to follow the crops and jobs that fed us. Those same jobs that the illegals are taking now, at 1/4 the wages we made in the 60’s and 70’s, because they have driven down the wages to such a level that they are not enough to support a family, as my father’s did – and we never wanted for food on our table!
Cesar Chavez fought AGAINST the illegal aliens, because he knew this would happen and the wages would be meager; he even turned in illegals every chance he got, and urged others to do so. Now look at the state of his once-great union – and all the others in the U.S. The construction trades have been taken over by them, as have most respectable trades and labor jobs in our nation.
I do not have a problem with those who came here legally; my husband is of 100% Mexican descent, and my grandchildrens’ fathers are also, making them 3/4 Mexican descent. But let me make this very clear: The only flags flyin’ in our home are the United States and California flags. I do not even fly the Oklahoma State flag, even though I was born there; it sits in my closet. But I am a Californian, and proud to be one, as I am proud to be a United States American.
What is wrong with everyone? Once, we needed immigrants when there were far fewer people. We certainly don’t NEED ANY now -from anywhere. Most of them refuse birth control and we are approaching 300 MILLION. We don’t need ONE more. We don’t educate, feed, house or care for our own citizens – how can we possibly take on all those that want to come here. If you took a poll, I’d bet at least a BILLION people would come here, TODAY, if they could. Why is breaking this law ANY different from, say, smuggling? I say suspend ALL immigration for at least 20 years and then think about it. How many are TOO many? Do you even have a personal space anymore? Should I just move into your house because it’s better than mine? The planet will NOT sustain this overpopulation. Soylent Green, anyone?
Officials are closing down Natividad Hospital in Salinas, CA because of all the illegal aliens who go there, get shot up in gang wars, have babies, etc. and don’t pay. It is NOT my fault that they don’t have health insurance; they need to go back to Central/South America and get their medical help paid by THEIR OWN gov’t.
Natividad Hospital has been open for decades, and is closing down because these people don’t pay their bills. Period.
My daughter got rear-ended in that town last year, and when the Salinas P.D. came, they REFUSED to write up a report, because the woman who hit her was an illegal alien without papers, no drivers’ license, and no insurance. Incredible! They pushed the woman’s car off the road, and let her go.
My daughter has uninsured motorist insurance (you should have this for this reason), but they refuse to pay because there is no police report. HUH!?!
And they wonder why we don’t want any more of them here?
I can’t believe what I’m reading. THIS IS AMERICA NOT MEXICO… THIS IS AMERICA NOT A SPORTING EVENT!! GET IT!?!?! We fly our flag and we fly it proudly. Why on earth do people think we should fly Mexico’s flag in the USA. You think they’d let us fly our flag there…? No! I got an idea, why don’t you go sneak into someone house…live there and protest that your name be posted on the mailbox next to theirs. Sounds stupid?!?!…hmm weird! You say we should be grateful…? MORON!!
Why would you even ask that question?
R you a Commie?

Displaying the Mexican flag, un-American? No.
As for the thought experiment, Americans residing abroad proudly display their flag throughout the world.
The conservatives’ outrage is yet another instance of their hypocrisy.
April 4th, 2006 at 3:33 pmSo does that make it unAmerican to wave the Irish flag @ St. Patrick’s parades?- cause then they’d be a WHOLE lot of Americans in trouble.
