Falling through the cracks at DHS.

Brian Doyle, the DHS spokesman who was arrested earlier this week for seducing a minor over the internet, had misused company equipment to download pornography in his previous employment at Time magazine. Rep. Peter King (R-NY: “[I]f there was an incident at Time magazine, Homeland Security above all should have found it.”

So much for his pathetic claim that recent deaths led to depression, and that the depression is to blame for his “actions.”

  2. Solitaire says:

Yes, of course, IF they’d asked. But it’s all one great big holier-than-thou club, and if you’re in the club, no matter what you have done or will do, it’s fine,… it’s a holy act probably. Humping for Jesus, isn’t that how the crook Ralph Reed laid it out?
My bet is that he has not been vetted at all.

  3. Jack says:

Isn’t this typical of the Bush administration hiring practices all the way around.

Incompetent all the way around, and endangering our lives and the lives of our children.

Jay Leno had a good one last night, how is going to save us from HLS. If Bin Laden was a little girl, we’d have him by now. NSA should listen to HLS phone calls.

  4. Zookeeper says:

Time Magazine was probably so anxious to see this guy leave that they didn’t mention his little child porn problem.

that would presume that the purpose of HSD was something other than busting employee unions, wouldn’t it, Pete, you shitwhistle?

  7. Cyra Brown says:

I am in NO WAY defending this man, but what he did at Time was a violation of company policy, not the breaking of a law. And downloading “regular” pornography is not currently against the law. Yes, he does have a problem, but the KNOWN illegal actions occured while he was employed at the DHS. BushCo needs to be spying on their own employees, as there seems to be no lack of evildoers there.

At least with Bill Frist, you only had to hide your kittens.

  9. snookered says:

Diddlers, thieves, liars, just a few of the groups welcome in BushCo.

  10. Shawn says:

Please stop using the word ’seduction’.
When a 55-year old man sends porn to a 14-year old girl it’s not seduction it’s grooming for child molestation.

  12. Jules says:

Thanks Shawn – how could anyone even think of a 14 year old as sexual – that is so sick – they are babies!!!

  13. Jules says:

If one troll comments on the way girls dress these days I will hurl!! There is NEVER a time when an adult should be talking to a child about sex unless it is a guardian, and that is only when giving them “the talk”

  14. Florida Mom says:

Seducing a minor??? Where you drop on your head as a baby? I mean I gotta ask. Usually you all here at ThinkProgress are on the cutting edge but a 14 year old is a child and is not an object of desire unless you are a complete evil doer. Adults seduce adults. Pedophiles rape children. Brian Doyle’s arguemnt sounds alot like Carlie Brusia’s murderer’s excuse as to why he kidnapped her as she was walking home from a slumber party: “I was going through a divorce.”

Carlie was raped and strangled. Her body was left for days under a tree to rot.

CHILDREN ARE NOT CONSENTING ADULTS. They are innocent and deserve protection from every adult in their life.

  15. Jules says:

Is that the way the law actually reads – seduction of a minor?

  16. lutton says:

maybe this is why they’ve been supponeaing all those ISPs?

  17. Zimzone says:

    Perverts. Thugs. Liars.
    Welcome to the Repulican’t Party.

  18. Marie says:

DHS was a sham from the start – a nice place to install a few more cronies – all in the name of “security.” Background checks performed by Homeland Security? What a novel idea! Perverts in the party of family values? Shocked, I am shocked!
We should all feel secure and our children safe — Homeland Security is on the job.
Just like FEMA, who will protect us all in the event of a disaster — after all, now the man who suggested duct tape and plastic sheets is in charge. Tornadoes and hurricans, not to mention dirty bombs or even worse, will all be managed effectively.
We are really safe and secure from all harm with DHS and FEMA working for us.

  19. For Truth says:

The Bushies and the Right don’t beleive in “depression” or mental illness. If you can’t see it, it aint there.

  20. Innocent Bystander says:

When the primary yardstick for job qualification is how much money he/she raised for the Bush-Cheney election, this is the government you get.

  21. Jeanne says:

I knew this guy had history. This is a pattern crime. It doesn’t just pop up. The Bush administration had an obligation to do a background check, especially for the Homeland Security. My God, what incompetence. This is shameful.

Cyra the reason a background check is done is to determine if the individual is TRUSTWORTHY, ie does he do as he is supposed to.. The fact that he disregards the rules of his civilian employer should have been a RED FLAG that he would disregard the rules in a government job also, it does not imply which rules just he does not follow the rules and therefore should not be allowed to have a job where disregarding the rules copuld cause harm to the government and nation….even if he was not going to disregard the LAWS regarding pedofelia….

  23. Lora says:

In the 1960s, a relative of mine could not get the highest security clearance for his defense industry job, even though he was an Ohio Republican, because he was married at the time to someone who had been previously married to a member of the American Communist Party (and had even cooperated with the FBI investigation of her ex-husband). Perhaps that was an extreme on the side of caution, but the current administration’s failure to do a proper vetting on someone who had been suspended from Time-Warner–hardly an obscure company–either shows a lack of real interest in “homeland security” or pure incompetence.
