VIDEO: Kristol Launches Right-Wing Attack On Fitzgerald»

When former Deputy Attorney General James Comey appointed Patrick Fitzgerald to investigate the outing of Valerie Plame he called Fitzgerald “an absolutely apolitical career prosecutor” and praised “his sterling reputation for integrity and impartiality.”

But now, Fitzgerald’s investigation has uncovered information that is damaging to President Bush. Today on Fox News Sunday, Weekly Standard editor William Kristol began the attack:

You know, the leak story is absurd, but I now think the whole prosecution is absurd. And I have hesitated to say this, because I have friends who respect Fitzgerald, but I now think it’s a politically motivated attempt to wound the Bush administration. … He is now out to discredit the Bush administration. He has bought the argument that there is something improper about the Bush administration responding to Joe Wilson’s charges.

Watch it:

Full transcript:

KRISTOL: In fact, we don’t know she was a covert operative, and Patrick Fitzgerald won’t even claim that. Patrick Fitzgerald isn’t investigating the actual source of the leak of Mrs. Wilson’s name, which was the Bob Novak column. We still don’t know who told Robert Novak, apparently Scooter Libby didn’t. You know, the leak story is absurd, but I now think the whole prosecution is absurd. And I have hesitated to say this, because I have friends who respect Fitzgerald, but I now think it’s a politically motivated attempt to wound the Bush administration. Why did Fitzgerald release — I mean, the theory of Fitzgerald’s perjury case against Libby, which is the only crime that’s alleged here, perjury and related crimes…obstruction of justice through perjury, really, for misleading the FBI or the grand jury. The theory of that case is Libby didn’t tell the truth, he didn’t say that Cheney had told him to do this, he blamed it on reporters, because he wanted to protect the Vice President or the President. Now it turns out that Libby, in testifying to the grand jury, carefully explained that he was authorized to go ahead and discuss the National Intelligence Estimate by the Vice President and the President.

HUME: But not Valerie Plame, necessarily.

KRISTOL: But not Valerie Plame, which was tangential, and which came up toward the end, apparently, of the conversation with Judy Miller. It was never central in those two or three weeks. It seems to me that Fitzgerald’s case is crumbling. He’s refusing to close his investigation of Karl Rove and other people. If you read his 39-page rebuttal to Libby, he focuses now on Cheney. He is now out to discredit the Bush administration. He has bought the argument that there is something improper about the Bush administration responding to Joe Wilson’s charges, and that’s the real meaning of what’s happened these last few days, which is very dangerous for the Bush administration. They now have a special prosecutor out not to convict Scooter Libby, but out to discredit the administration.

HERES THE THING ABOUT THAT LITTLE REPOWHORE GIRLIE-MAN…. NOBODY SAYS BUSH COULDNT REPSOND TO WILSONS ARTICLE WITH FACTS!!!! WITH “FACTS” JACKASSES!!!! WITH FACTS!!!!!!!!. BUT INSTEAD,,BUSH OUTED HIS N.O.C. CIA WIFE…. BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD

DOESNT ANYBODY GET THAT. BUSH DOESNT HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECLASSIFY WORKING AGENTS BECUASE HE DOESNT LIKE THE POLITICS OF THEIR SPOUSES…. DOESNT ANY NEO-=CON F*CKFACE UNDERSTAND THAT?

NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT BUSH TOLD THE AMERICAN PUBLIC, DURING A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, 8 TIMES THAT HE WANTED TO FIND OUT WHO THE LEAKER WAS.

BUSH SHOULD BE INDICTED FOR OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE FOR LETTING THE SPECIAL PROSECUTOR GO FORWARD , INDICT PEOPLE , AND PUT PEOPLE IN JAIL, IF HE HAD INFOMATION TO SETTLE THE CASE.

  2. Wills Says:

I have a news flash for Fox News - I wouldn’t watch it - them if there was no other station available. We are better off with no news than with lies and conspiracies to defraud the people of the US. The news media is very close to being the most distrusted source in the country.

  3. The Truth Says:

Fitz seems to me to has uncovered a conspiracy at Whitehouse, at the highest levels, to deprive Valerie Plame of her civil rights by willfully and deliberately destroying her career. That effort included agressively and intentionally releasing classified information, the confidentiality of which was vital the national security of the United States. And after it was all over it looks they all lied and obstructed justice to cover it up. What is Bill Kristalnacht missing?

  4. GSD Says:

This war mongering propagandist should be run out of town on a rail and shunned forever.
Your war has collapsed, your political party is in shambles and now you just lash out at the one one non-politically motivated person in DC.

    Get lost you shit-heel.

  5. unbelievable Says:

If this nonsense is what sells, should we really be surprised that 60 million people voted for Bush in 2004? No wonder the Founding Fathers established a Republic… Unfortunately, that system is now filled with morons who watch FOX… Can’t win.

  6. ericnh Says:

Is anyone surprised by this? Perhaps we should start a pool every time someone respected by the righ-twingers comes out with something against either this adminstration or right-wing ideology. Remember the evolution-ID debate in Dover, PA? Judge Jones, upon his assignment to the case, was lauded by the fundies, who saw no possible way he could rule against them. After all, he was a good, respected Bush-appointed conservative judge. Of course, as soon as he ruled against the ID supporters, they’ve done nothing but slam his ruling (with totally absurd legal arguments) or attack him as an “activist” judge. Who’s the flip-flopper now?

  7. Bush Bites Says:

I WOULDN’T TAKE THE COMMENTS OF DAN QUAYLE’S FORMER CHIEF OF STAFF TOO SERIOUSLY.

IN FACT, IF THERE WEREN’T CONSERVATIVE RAGS AND SLEAZEBALL CONSERVATIVE NETWORKS DYING TO HIRE ANY WINGNUT, THIS GUY WOULD MOST LIKELY BE SCRUBBING TOILETS RIGHT NOW.

AND DOING A BAD JOB OF IT TOO.

  8. s Says:

Wow, the dysfunction of the right wing looks more and more like the Bird Flu……it’s a disease. It’s mental illness. As a group, they have wound their greedy little minds around a world view that just DOES NOT include fairness, dispassionate reasoning, or courage. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE TIRED OF THE LIKES OF KRISTOL, LIMBAUGH, ROVE, COULTER, BUSH, CHENY, RUMSFELD AND……..ALL THE REST OF THE LYING, CRIMINAL FREAKS. The have no qualms about people dying for their tiny little asses…dying for lies and greed. Time to take the country back…….SPIN AIN’T CUTTIN IT ANYMORE AND RIGHT BASTARDS FEEL IT.

  9. D Says:

Anyone who still watches Fox news for facts is a lost cause anyway.

  10. John the Elder Says:

I ask you, who gives a flying fart what this whoring wimp has to say about anything?
Take note that the only “voice” this jillass(note not jack) has is Faux. He is only at home with frauds. I dismiss him as I do the fraud news agency and his weekly no standards.

  11. beavercleaver Says:

After history documents that this administration, and congress, were the THE WORST EVER, every troll, every neocon apologist should have their internet drivel resurrected, and their bullshit rubbed in their noses. It’s extrememly hard to believe with so much evidence in so many areas that these gasbags still get face time…and they’re presented as legitimate analysts! Most of this stuff couldn’t be made up, and I wouldn’t believe ‘em if they swore they lyin’. I hope guys like Kristol will be made to wear Bush’s image, like a chicken killen’ dog has to wear a chicken carcas tied to his neck forever.

  12. Mack MacKenzie Says:

    BushCo = LIARS
No one can dispute that FACT.

  13. Dave M. Says:

Well, I can’t say I’m surprised at all of this. Given the past actions of this neoconservative movement, we can pretty much predict its future moves. That is to say, everything has to be politicized, and thus discredited in the minds of the neoconservatives that are following this movement. The debate, at this point, is going to turn away from “did the white house do something awful for political retribution” to “how much longer are the kings in the white house going to have to endure the questioning of their ethics regarding the CIA leak.”

The memes are being put into place: no, Plame really wasn’t covert… yes, fitzgerald is a political figure… Republicans look bad in light of this investigation, and Democrats are gaining an upper hand the more this investigation goes on, therefore, the Democrats must be using Fitzgerald as a political tactic to try to regain control of American politics.

Basically, we’re watching the meaning of this investigation being eviscerated because it’s starting to hit a little too close to home… They cannot stop the investigation from happening, but they can make the white house look like victims of it in the minds of their neoconservative fan base, so that come fall, Republicans will be in a rabid frenzy over making sure Republicans maintain control of congress, in order to prevent this horrible, “illegitimate” investigation from leading to a censuring or even an impeachment of the president.

  14. Cyra Brown Says:

Well, clearly, the “talking points” have been sent out. But shouldn’t they be after “Scooter”? He was the pig that squealed, after all. And without being tortured, either!! But if the story they are telling now is supposedly true, why did they wait almost 3 years to “fess up”? Why did they let this drag on and on, when they could have cleared this all up, just by mentioning it?

  15. Looking in Says:

  16. Jay Randal Says:

Kristol is a criminal Neocon, so he should be deported to Israel, or given a prison term since he helped foment the Iraq war/occupation! Now he advocates for war on Iran, as he attacks anyone who threatens his war-maker Bush! Shame on Kristol!

  17. Ron Says:

The Bush Cabal discredits themselves everytime one of them opens their biscuit trap. They don’t need any help from others.

They’ve been doing a fine job of it all on their own.

Get ready for another terrorist attack on US soil; Then get ready for the attack on Iran.

Then get ready for the *ahem* Republicans to ‘win’ come November.

  20. Daniel DiRito Says:

Does Kristol actually think the public will accept his argument when he says, “He (Fitzgerald) has bought the argument that there is something improper about the Bush administration responding to Joe Wilson’s charges.” Excuse me, but secretely leaking information cannot be equated with “responding”. The explanation of the actions (leaking) after the fact cannot disguise the intentions of the actions (manipulation) at the moment that they occurred.

Had the President wanted to respond in order to properly inform the American public about the classified information, then a response would have been made in the form of a press release from the White House or explained in a speech or through a news conference. Unfortunately, they couldn’t do that because the leaked information was selective such that had they acknowledged the “declassification” openly, the documents would have become accesible and would have been viewed in their entirety…likely casting doubt on the intelligence assessment conclusions of the administration.

I am far from the neocon you label me. I happen to have worked quite vigorously on Sen. Schumers elections. One of MY happier days was watching D’mato take a hike. I just dont understand all the HATE. It is always more productive to channel such feelings into action instead of bellyaching

  22. profmarcus Says:

bill kristol, if you had the pair of testicles you were born with, teeny-weeny as they were at the time, you would ask your revered president to step out of his bubble and level with the american people… of course he wouldn’t do that but at least you could take satisfaction from the fact that, if you were to look in a mirror, you would see a reflection…

  23. The Truth Says:

    Looking in,

There is a bumber sticker that reads “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.”

While I agree with the sentiment, it’s not entirely correct. Because there are people, people like you it seems, that are not outraged and are paying attention. Perhaps you can tell us how that can be? You seem so happy with the way things are going perhaps you can share some good news with us so we’ll all be more like you.

  27. Darin Says:

Typical fare from a Republican Lapdog. If you don’ t like the message then blame the messenger! Fortunately, nobody is buying this line of BS anymore, and the more they spout crap like this the more pathetic they look.

  28. jmad Says:

It’s the same old story, cloud the issue with so many half-truths and lies that an un-informed viewer won’t have a clue. Billy Krystal can’t say what everyone else knows and sees. It’s neo-con 101, he helped write the book. He’s worried that the poor administration is under attack from Fitzgerald. It’s the same concern the right had when Bush was ambushed by an 80 year old Helen Thomas, and everyone was quick to point how valiantly he fought back. The bottom line is, until we have video of GWB gunning down an orphanage, nothing will stick.

    Comment by Looking in — April 9, 2006 @ 12:43 pm

There’s a difference beteen HATE and outrage. I hate very few people. And none of them are faux news anchors.

For rhe record, most of us are pro-active. Don’t be so quick to pass holier-than-thou judgments without gathering all your facts. Stick around long enough and you’ll see.

  31. Looking in Says:

dear THE TRUTH , AS stated in #22 i work for political change. 32. ElectricBassPlayer Says:

#22, well, who knows what the people here do politically that they don’t talk about? Some may be volunteers, some may donate money, etc., etc.

As for the “hate” comment, well, I can see how you think that. The language here gets pretty strident. A lot of it comes from fear, being afraid for the future of our country, for the rule of law, for America’s international standing and reputation, for the damaged environment and financial situation being irresponsibly left to our children and grandchildren. There’s a lot of frustration, too, at being called a traitor for exercising your right to free speech, and not being able to change that 30% of people’s minds who just don’t give a damn about reality and will support Bush all the way into Armageddon!

You also need to put it into perspective. This is far from hate speech here. Try going to “Media Matters” tto see how the right-wing demonizes its opponents and lies, lies, lies all day long, 24/7, as a matter of policy. Try listening to the subtext of what Bill O-Reillky and Rush Limbaugh and especially *shudder* Ann Coulter. Try listening to those people for a couple of days and tell me if you don’t think they are full of hate, even if they don’t curse.

So a lot of this page is just blowing off steam. It’s nice to know that we aren’t alone, that the world hasn’t really gone insane, and that there’s really a chance for a better future after all.

  35. Mazurka Says:

They now have a special prosecutor out not to convict Scooter Libby, but out to discredit the administration.

And, how many special prosecutors did the Republicans unleash to discredit the Clinton Administration? This the proverbial “pot calling the kettle black.” These guys are in such need of some mental health care to work on their “projection” problems.

  36. LC Liberal Says:

The neo-con’s are in a corner and are lashing out now that GWB is seriously implicated in the leak case. It’s only natural for them to smear Pat Fitzgerald as a liberal stooge. Meanwhile, Ken Starr was a truly amazing person, carrying out his duty with grace and integrity. (sarcasm)

Here’s an idea: let’s recast the Republican/daddy-Democrat/mommy thing as Republican/child-Democrat/adult. Let’s put the adults back in charge.

  38. Dreary Urbanite Says:

When the truth is getting to close for comfort for the right wingnuts in exposing the mess that they have led us into in Iraq, lets start attacking the messenger. A page right out the Karl Rove playbook.

If the past is any guide, expect to see more Fitzgerald bashing in the days ahead.

  40. Ron Says:

You know, there ought to be limits to free speech.

All of this fear and loathing and whining and stomping of the feet and bellyaching and on and on ad nauseum is just becoming too much.

If we could just learn to love and not hate, there wouldn’t be some much stomach-turning outrage.

Please be pollyannish about all of this stuff and everybody will be happy go-lucky.

The arch neo-con himself has proven to be wrong on everything. He is a warmonger, a shill and a whore. He can see the writing on the wall now, so use a well-used metaphor, he and his cabal are in their last throes.

  47. Erroll Says:

The nonsense and progaganda that Kristol is spouting is similar to what he said in the documentary Why We Fight, when he calmly asserted, with a smile on his face, that the U.S. has done the right thing in Iraq. Former Lt. Col. Karen Kawatkowski rebutted Kristol’s asinine arguments fairly easily in the film.

How many campaigns did Jesus work for? Thats right none. For Jesus his words were his sword. Same goes for many of the founding fathers. That is what freedom of speach is all about. Because if you cannot convince people with your words all you got is bullying, lies, and violence to make a difference. Working for campaigns has accomplished nothing. The opposition does not have honor and so has no problem standing on top of dishonest “wins”.

    Keep your self-righteousness to yourself.

It’s confirmed. Mighty Aphrodite has split personalities and this is one of them. She’s the only one who think she isn’t insane.

Kristol’s such a tool. He can’t - or won’t - see that his neocon cause has collapsed under the weight of its own incompetence, corruption, and utopianism. He’s like a guy on the Titannic, bailing with a coffee can.

    It’s a hopeless cause, fella.

Look at the pic of Kristol on this TP thread > I do not want to slander Gay guys, but he looks and acts like a fairy queen! Do the Neocons hate themselves, so they want to destroy the entire world? Are the Republicans in DC all in denial about their sexuality? Why are dozens of GOP politicians listed as clients of Jeff Gannon the male hooker?

We only have to wait until they all have a suicidal/self -delusional reason to start hating Bill Kristol to look forward to. Then he will start to truly taste the kool-aid he has been bathing, swimming, showering, and dringking these last 2 decades. Remember, he is a signatory to the PNAC.
JUST RAPTURE HIM, and be done with it.

  81. GURU^ Says:

Let’s hope that Bill is raptured to Iraq in broad daylight.Let him tell those of Baghdad of the great freedoms [chaos] he helped orchestrate.

I think you are hitting the nail on the head. THEY ARE SCARED SHITLESS OF FITZ. His laying low only now fulfills their worst fear, that he is NOT a partisan hack, and did not run to the media when he connected the dots in the first place. It only came out now becasue Libby’s team requested the documents. So, it is them that have shot themselves in the foot.
And poor Bill making this lunatic rant:
“In fact, we don’t know she was a covert operative, and Patrick Fitzgerald won’t even claim that.”

Umm, wasn’t it the CIA who asked for the investigation because ONE OF THEIR COVERT OPERATIVES WAS OUTED.
HELLLO… BILL COME ON DOWN FROM YOUR KOOLAID HIGH…..
A mind is surely a terrible thing to waste. tsk, tsk.

Read Mark Crispin Miller’s Fooled Again, ir goes into the self -haterd that is clearly apparent as you note, and their suicidal aims. They all hate their closted homosexuality, and their lack of morals. That is why everything up is down, and what was white is now black.
The “Precedent and Vice precdent” frees us by taking away our freedoms.
Got it? They are the enemy and anyone who supports them is giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
We need to ask the FBI and all branches of law enforcement why they are not arresting these traitors enmasse.
I really feel that this was an overthrow of the govmint via the Secret Service. Read their charter. They do not protect anthing except the Preznit and VP. They do not take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. Why is that?
This is one of the more glariingly factual things about 9/11 I show to people. Why did not the SS run into the room , the moment the second plane hit, and everyone realized the country was under attack, and remove their “charge” from what MUST BE harms way?
They have to be behind the Coup. They are the new police that control how we get to speak anywhere. But yet they take not oath to the Constitution. I wonder if their members take the pledge of allegiance?

Did you just read Ishmael, or all of Quinn’s books?

  86. Uncle Togarma Says:

Its the Fraud of the Inquiry Stupid.

OK, let’s accept the White House alibi that releasing Plame’s identity was no crime. But if that’s true, they’ve committed a bigger crime: Bush and Cheney knowingly withheld vital information from a grand jury investigation, a multimillion dollar inquiry the perps themselves authorized. That’s akin to calling in a false fire alarm or calling the cops for a burglary that never happened.. -Palast

Hypocrite, you just slandered about a half a dozen members of Think Communist who happen to be fairy queens.

  88. Cafe Politico » Careful Republithugs…. Says:

I-R-I lol you are one of those closeted fairy queens I refered to! You hate your lusting for other males, so you call everyone Gay on here, but you are the one who has issues about it! You are just like Ken Mehlman, Karl Rove, Sen. Thune and other DC GOP goons who hate themselves for desiring sex with guys! Get some therapy before you hurt somebody physically or yourself!

  92. Cynical Says:

I always know when the Republicans are caught in a lie. They have the RNC shills like Billy Kristol, et al. go out and blame someone else. In this case it is Fitzgerald who is prosecuting because of partisan politics. Translation: I have nothing, Bush F-up again.

  93. Cynical Says:

Also- I like the “He bought into” line.

That’s right, Billy. It’s not that the admin did anything wrong. It is that Fitzgerald is a moron and he bought into the big, bad partisan lie and is swiftboating the President.

“I’m shocked that there is illegal leaking here”
Bill Kristol- Idiot Savant. or just Idiot.

  94. Lora Says:

    To Looking-in,
I’m sorry that some posters were overly harsh on you–particularly if you were for d’Amato’s defeat. But have you ever looked at rightwing sites? The ones I’ve looked at don’t even invite comments; and I gather that the ones that do will ban any person who writes a contrary opinion or criticism of Bush even if expressed politely.

    As for you, Mighty Hypocrite,
You are usually far from a paragon of restraint when replying to posters with whom you disagree. I think you are about the only poster who claims to be a woman who uses crude sexual references, such as accusing in graphic terms one liberal man of lacking male genitalia. And on I-WRONG-I’s posts, I’ve seen terms like “fucktard” and “ratbastard” more than all other places combined. (Incidentally, this is the first time I have ever written out that F word.)
You reichwingers can’t seem to make up your minds whether liberals/progressives are Islamo-fascists with al-Qaeda friends or Commies. I am neither, and I’m sure the same applies for all the other liberal/progressive posters here. I don’t need you Busheviks tell me about the Al Qaeda friends that in reality I don’t have. As for Communism or anti-capitalism, I don’t see the anti-Bush posters here calling for the abolition of private property, etc. I, in fact, happen to own some property, which I don’t want the government or anyone else to take away, except at a fair price–something, which, by the way, wasn’t given to the people in Arlington, Texas, whose property was confiscated to make room for a new baseball stadium and make George W. Bush and his partners very wealthy. I have posted clips about this previously; so to save bandwidth space, I will only recommend for those who want to know more to google “George W. Bush and the Arlington, TX land deal.”

  95. Looking in Says:

#96 Lora, thanks. I actually enjoy this site. I’ll have to check the repub. sites to test your theory. If nothing else they could help my typing skills.

“I hate to correct you, but France measures REAL unemployment”

Give a link that proves your assertion that France measure real unemployment and that their 10% rate is REAL.

“However, in the United States and several other countries this is not a problem, since unemployment is measured using a sample survey (akin to a Gallup poll). This method is also used by many countries besides the U.S., including Canada, Mexico, Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Economic Community.”

I believe France is in the EEC.

“Ironically may economists say our unemployment is HIGHER than france’s.”

Actually, I think he did. I tried posting the link, but the spam filter wouldn’t let me. Here is the name of the article:

MSN Money - The numbers behind the lies
    By Bill Fleckenstein

In it, you will find a link to the actual interview with John Williams. It is a pay site, though.

  102. Kristol Attacks Fitzgerald Probe as Politically Motivated :: SOTUblog Says:

[…] Yet, despite all of that, Kristol still believes this prosecution is politically motivated. BILL KRISTOL: In fact, we don’t know she was a covert operative, and Patrick Fitzgerald won’t even claim that. Why did Fitzgerald release — I mean, the theory of Fitzgerald’s perjury case against Libby, which is the only crime that’s alleged here, perjury and related crimes… obstruction of justice through perjury, really, for misleading the FBI or the grand jury.
