Right-wing radio host Brian James of KFYI in Arizona recently advocated murder as a way of dealing with undocumented immigrants. An excerpt:
What we’ll do is randomly pick one night - every week - where we will kill whoever crosses the border. Step over there and you die. You get to decide whether it’s your lucky night or not. I think that would be more fun…[I’d be] happy to sit there with my high-powered rifle and my night scope.
The remarks prompted Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard and U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton to send a complaint to the FCC. Here’s a portion:
At no time during this hour did Mr. James disavow violence or indicate he was joking. In fact, when one caller suggested Mr. James did not really mean he wanted to shoot and kill immigrants, Mr. James retorted that in fact he did mean it. Immediately after this exchange, Mr. James engaged the next caller in a discussion about the correct ammunition to use when shooting border crossers to make sure the shots would be fatal.
This type of threatening and inciting speech is dangerous and totally irresponsible for anyone, particularly a licensed body using public airways.
Brian James has not apologized and claims his comments were “satire.” Later, for a story on the KFYI website, James said “KFYI does not advocate shooting illegals. It might be fun, but they don’t advocate it.”
Make up your own mind about whether James meant it or not. You can listen to the audio HERE. (Click “KFYI audio” to start the recording.) You can contact KFYI with your views at chickboss@kfyi.com.
Family Values! Family Values!
Remember kids, it’s ok to kill people if they don’t look like you!
Sheesh. No wonder the rest of the world thinks we’re all insane.
April 10th, 2006 at 2:28 pmIt doesn’t matter if he meant it. It was a clear case of incitement to murder, and is thus a crime.
April 10th, 2006 at 2:31 pmYou know, I used to think a conversation was over when one pulled the “Nazi” card. Now I realize it’s escalated to the “murder” card.
This jackass needs to be fired in a big hurry.
April 10th, 2006 at 2:31 pmI am, after all, only applying the same standard as they applied to the guy who joked about “Burning Bushes”
April 10th, 2006 at 2:32 pmLucky for Brian James that he’s confined to the audio airwaves and that he didn’t advocate his position while exposing his bare nipple to a visual audience. The FCC really frowns on THAT behavior.
April 10th, 2006 at 2:32 pmI would like to see a few immigrants capture Brian James and put a loaded gun in his mouth. Of course, I mean this satirically.
April 10th, 2006 at 2:37 pmLeft-wing mouthpiece Ben Affleck advocates hanging the President. Mary Landrieu advocates punchin him in the face. What’s your point, Judd?
April 10th, 2006 at 2:41 pmNow let’s see whether there’s any sort of fine or reprimand or whatever emanating from the uber-conservative FCC, and/or whether there’s any disavowal emanating from the Republican Party.
I’d be willing to bet money the Party won’t say anything. Their silence would indicate tacit approval.
And they wonder why they can’t get the Hispanic vote.
April 10th, 2006 at 2:44 pmYou know, I am glad that we’re seeing more and more of this kind of behavior… I am not simply referring to this behavior of wanting to kill immigrants.
I am also referring collectively to everything going on right now… the mass protests on immigration… Bush approving outing a CIA agent to get back at her husband for exposing his lies… the temperature is rising in Washington at the same time as it is here in Seattle due to the warm spring weather.
You see… it appears to me that Bush and the neo-cons are circling their wagons, as it were.
This means we’re likely to see another downward spiral in Bush’s approval ratings as well as the Republican Congress’ approvals.
It shows an ever more desperate movement in it’s waning days.
But beware… the beast is at its most dangerous when it is wounded and about to die. (Hence the threat of nukes used against Iran, whether Congress or the American public agrees with it or not.)
Victory will soon be ours, people! Savor it when it comes!
April 10th, 2006 at 2:45 pm#7 — the difference is that stopping Bush would SAVE lives.
April 10th, 2006 at 2:45 pm#11 - so your criticism is partisan as I suspected. That’s why liberals are out of power - because they are partisan and their entire agenda revolves around an ungodly hatred for Bush and America.
April 10th, 2006 at 2:47 pmRight wing radio is “hate speech radio”, as are all right wing media entities.
April 10th, 2006 at 2:50 pmHatred is the fuel that powers American right wing conservatives.
[…] Classy. […]
April 10th, 2006 at 2:51 pmI think after running down as much as I could on Mr. James it appears he is just another unaccountable freelancer available to disperse hateful spew without recourse or indemnity. Wasn’t this very point just discussed regarding Fox news and it’s list of non payroll opiners? He is just another zit on the back of the GOP that needs to be popped. Here, read more over at FDL. http://www.firedoglake.com/category/bigotsphere/
April 10th, 2006 at 2:51 pmWhat type of compassionate conservatism is this? Anyone?
April 10th, 2006 at 2:57 pm#12. . . cripes, what a fool.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:00 pm#12 - If spouting off a bunch of nonsensical GOP talking points helps you to swallow it, then more power to you. But no one here is buying it. The fact you are doing it in defense of someone who is advocating MASS MURDER is particularly telling…
April 10th, 2006 at 3:00 pm#12 - “ungodly hatred for Bush and America.”
That’s the problem with these people. They are so self-righteous. If you disagree with Bush, you’re against God? You’re ungodly? If you disagree with Bush, you’re against America?
Oh, how I wish I could have a mind that would accommodate such ridiculous assertions and contradictions.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:01 pmiokiyar
mAnn Coulter can advocate for the death of SCOTUS Justices…
Pat “I’ve Got A Squirrel In My Brain” Robertson can call for the assassination of international leaders…
now, apparently, fascist fux on Phoenix Radio stations can incite their listeners to kill immigrants at the border…
those xians in georgia who are worried cuz they can’t be intolerant??? just call for killing homos, cuz that’s the GOPuke way…
April 10th, 2006 at 3:01 pm.
Just for fun, lets put Mr. James in jail and throw away the keys.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:02 pmHEY # 7
The point is that this jerk and his employer have a license to operate a broadcast
station IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST AND ON A PORTION OF THE PUBLICLY
OWNED BROADCAST SPECTRUM.
This behavior is a clear violation of the terms of their license and they may therefore
have to forfeit it.
Get it now asshole?

April 10th, 2006 at 3:03 pmYou are sob - many of us at LEAST 1/2 of this country hates BUSH that is not
the same as hating America you fn Nimrod. But I DO hate idiots like you.
The unemployemtn is NOT 4.7 you idiot, that only counts those on unemployment not
those that stopped looking. It is closer to 12%. Disinformation wil not work here
as$hole.
If someone takes up this clown’s suggestion and kills people on the border, would that make him an accessory to the crime?
April 10th, 2006 at 3:04 pmJason - you apparently hate FACTS, too. No problem, that helps keep the govt firmly in GOP control. I don’t hate you.. I PITY you and those of your ilk.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:05 pm#12
Don’t be stupid. Just don’t. Conservatives are even more partisans than liberals ever will be. You’re just being blind to facts, that’s a-l-l-l folks.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:05 pmMr. RU4.saken, here is the link to the HUff post regarding Ben A. comments. I read most of the comments and they’re certainly a large number of people who disagree with him. Your comparisons to him and Mr. James are actually quite ironic to me . Just like the Administrations rationale for when it is appropriate to leak or is it “inform”? You currently are out numbered , when we get to about the 100th comment then come back and see who’s fair and balanced. Better call all your friends and tell them to come quick and tattle on Ben and the rest of the ungodly powerless heathens. Good luck.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2006/04/10/ben-affleck-bush-probab_n_18825.html
April 10th, 2006 at 3:08 pm#11 — I agree with just stopping a seeming re-enactment of ClockWork Orange in the halls of government. Killing any of the idiots would just make them martyrs, a distinction unearned, at best.
Far better is anonymity for a cabal that exemplifies the “banality of evil”.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:08 pmAlot of calls asking the FCC to step in.
Is that what we really want? The government deciding what you can say or not? They already have squashed plenty, I don’t advocate giving them more power on speech.
Be careful what you wish for.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:10 pmMary Landrieu advocates punchin him in the face. What’s your point, Judd?
Comment by Unemployment Rate
Yeah, well, speaking for myself I wouldn’t mind seeing someone kick his sorry ass. But of course, I always like a good fight and it wouldn’t be. I bet that snotty-assed puke hits like a friggin’ girl, don’t you UR?
April 10th, 2006 at 3:10 pmNazi Nation. 5 years of Bush Republicanism and the nation is becoming overtly fascist. Godwin’s Law has been revoked.

Remember, as the hood is lifted off of the Republican Right Wing that has been ruining this nation the more shrill and prone to violence they will become. Look at their rhetoric and actions.

I used to PITY those like poster #12. No w I realize that it is they that truly
April 10th, 2006 at 3:11 pmhate what America has represented. Freedom - check and balances.
But these evil bastards would be very comfortable with a dictator.
That is until they get locked up without any charges or ability to defend
themselves. Can’ happen here - do not kid yourself.
Unemployment Rate thinks that liberals have an “ungodly hatred for Bush and America”. As Ben Affleck intimates, Bush, along with Rumsfeld and other members of his administration, should be tried in The Hague for crimes against humanity, for causing the deaths of over 100,000 innocent Iraqi civilians. That reasoning is not, as he puts it, ungodly hatred but justifiable hatred. To try and equate the Bush administration being held accountable for causing war and needless suffering of Iraqi civilians to wantonly advocating shooting people to death who are attempting to cross over into this country, either legal or illegal, is beyond absurd.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:11 pm“I was only joking” is the last refuge of a right-wing extremist.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:13 pmI was only joking in #30.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:16 pm#30 - SFTU. You would be no match - trust me. Hide behind your blog, little boy.
I am leaving the “Bush is Hitler party” to go mock you somewhere else. Mocking liberals is fun - and very easy.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:17 pm#7 - Ben Affleck and Mary Landrieu will not be able to do those things. Even whether they truly want to is debatable, but the fact that they can’t and they know it shows they aren’t making credible threats. This guy has a specific, doable plan . Even if he doesn’t want to do it, he is encouraging others to do so, suggesting it would be fun even as he is supposedly trying to back off (although he doesn’t say he doesn’t advocate it, just that the station doesn’t — whose advice do you think his listeners are more likely to follow?). I don’t know whether one situation is against the law and one is not, I’m just speaking from common sense here.
Seriously, if you find yourself if the position of trying to defend someone who says shooting people is fun you should probably stay out of the argument.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:18 pm#33. Good point. Perhaps even an intellectual lightweight like “Unemployment” would realize that a trial is a whole different animal than advocating the use of a sniper rifle to kill people crossing the border.
Personally, I’d like to see someone use a sniper rifle against conservative mouthpieces who continue to spout the same trite talking points day after day, even after their viewpoints have been shown to be inaccurate and their policies failures. Shoot ‘em in the head, I say . . . of course, satirically.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:18 pm#38. I bet I’d be a match for you… more than a match. Bring it, little man.

but were are the ones full of hate?
April 10th, 2006 at 3:21 pmBy the way . . . it’s perfect that a pro-Bush moron would have the word “unemployment” in his nickname. Bwaaaaaahahahahaha!
April 10th, 2006 at 3:23 pmHas this been denounced by Republicans? Has Tom Tancredo denounced it? Has John McCain? Has President Bush?
This radio host claims he speaks for conservatives–does he speak for them? Do they agree with him? Is this mainstream conservatism?
Has the Republican leadership asked the FCC to even investigate? I’m sure they’ve investigated people for joking about killing the President–is this less important? Do Republicans think this is protected speech? Do they not only think that illegal immigrants are felons, but that they should be summarily shot without even the right to trial that criminals get? Even Al Quaeda gets a trial, but a Mexican looking for a job? I guess not.
Welcome to the modern Republican party.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:23 pmI see Unemployment is running off to where he doesn’t need to defend his weak, inaccurate positions. Waaaaah.

Alternate image: James, in a Twilight Zone episode, getting his wish then ending up alone in the middle of the desert at the wrong end of a sniper rifle.

April 10th, 2006 at 3:47 pmFar out!
This means I can off right-wing bloviators, right??? After all, it would be fun…
April 10th, 2006 at 3:49 pmIt’s a shame to read the vituerative commentary that appears from BOTH sides on blogs like this. Threatening to beat people up for their opinions doesn’t do anybody any good. When individuals like Unemployment Rate decide to show up, I’d like to see them treated with respect, but trenchantly argued against. And if the comments become inflamatory, don’t take the bait. If there’s anything we need in this country, it’s civility, and actual discourse as opposed to quarreling. Perhaps then wackos like this radio host and Ann Coulter will receive the type of attention that they actually deserve: which is to be completely ignored.*
*And that’s not to say that things like this shouldn’t be legally examined if a crime was committed, which may have happened in this case.

April 10th, 2006 at 3:53 pmTundra,
If I was a liberal talk radio host, and I said something on the air similar too:
“folks these evangelical conservatives are trying to make us into a christian fundamentalist state. I think we should pick a random sunday, and wait outside with sniper rifles, and off them as they leave church.”
I think there would be a few people upset about that statement don’t you?
April 10th, 2006 at 3:54 pmTundra there is a difference between saying “I don’t like people crossing the border illegally” and “I would really like to hunt these people down and put a bullet in their heads.”
Can you really not see the difference?
April 10th, 2006 at 3:55 pmI’m no longer proud to be an American. This country has had a long history of racism and murder, going all the way back to the European discovery of it.The 1960’s brought hope,(civil rights movement)and despair(the vietnam war) but back them I had high hopes the country was, slowly, overall moving in the right direction,The came Reagan, which brought in a “NEW DARK AGES”,but Bushi s MUCH,MUCH worse.IF there is a major economic breakdown in this country is headed to a bloody civil war,and with the rightwing media dehumanizing liberals, leftist, and all non-whites a blood bath is on the way,HOW CAN ANYONE TOLERATE THIS HATEFUL,FASCIST REGIME.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:55 pmIf you can fine one station millions of dollars for exposing JJ’s nipple, obviously a serious threat to the rule of law…how much should the fine be for inciting murder? It will be interesting to watch the government’s reaction.

*****Joe - Better watch out, unbelievable will by calling you a “mysoginist”. If you said, “I bet that snotty-a$$ed puke hits like a flaming queen,” would you be labelled a “homophobe”?
On thread: No one should advocate killing border jumpers. I think we should follow the example of the Mexican government, who stringently patrol their southern border, and turn back illegals. Stop the breech of our southern border.
April 10th, 2006 at 3:57 pmI think there would be a few people upset about that statement don’t you?
I agree there would be upset people about it for sure. My point is, I don’t think trying to get the government to stop speech is the best answer here. Sure write letters to advertisers, complain to the station, heck launch a smear campaign against him.
This blog often states how the country is turning into a facist controlled country and there are several posts that are trying to push it even more. Is what he said stupid? yuppers. But where do we draw the line on the First Amendment? I bet we could find several things on this site itself that would cross any line drawn. Should the government investigate and fine the person who runs this site? Not as far as I’m concerned.
April 10th, 2006 at 4:01 pm66
Can you really not see the difference?
I fully see the difference, I don’t advocate what the idiot said at all either. I’m saying where would you like the line drawn on freedom of speech?

April 10th, 2006 at 4:06 pmWhat would Jesus do? If Jesus had actually lived, instead of being an allegorical figure, he would have been terribly disappointed in his moronic followers. Intellectually lazy, contemporary people foolishly judge (and despair!!) over long ago historical events through a modern lens. (Determining that “vile” America did not want to punish traitors with disembowelment and be-heading. Viewed as cruel and unusual punishment, our foreFATHERS had no problem with hanging or firing squad. Today few Americans would tolerate such a dispatch….values evolved…who knew??

April 10th, 2006 at 4:10 pmPeople like #12 aren’t genuine conservatives, Glenn Greenwald pointed out what they really are: Authority Cultists.
they have lost the ability to be reasonable and in my opinion have reached a point wherein they have somehow transubstantiated Bush into the literal physical and spiritual embodiment of America itself and because the depth of their emotional investment in his supposed divinity, any criticism of Bush is viewed by these whackjobs as both Heresy and Treason in the same breath.
Sort of like the Arthurian concept of the Land and the King being One
and yet they call others “deranged” and “unhinged”

Advocating for someone’s Murder certainly sounds like its vioilation of another person’s First Amendment Rights.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. ???
That one doesn’t have anything about personal security or the right not to have someone say something about you/threaten you.
Should Death Threats be protected by the first amendment?
Wow, yet another symptom of Bush America. (I’m not the one advocating giving more control to your Buddy Bushco here)
Death Threats: Aren’t they really a form of Free Speech?
Ok, fine you are right, lets have you put down a list of what things should be illegal to say. Then we can hunt through a few blogs and point out all types of stuff to the FCC and see if we can’t get a few shut down. I’d be willing to bet the ACLU won’t touch this issue with a 10 foot pole either (Rightly so in my opinion). Why do we need government to settle everything?
April 10th, 2006 at 4:22 pmComplaints can be submitted on-line on-line to the FCC. Here is what I submitted to the FCC:
“On more than one occasion, Brian James, a KFYI ‘personality,’ has incited the murder of illegal immigrants crossing the U.S. border. I’m not sure what the FCC considers “indecent,” but in my opinion incitement to commit murder ought to be on the list. Mr. James, and his station, have defended the speech as satirical, but anyone who has listened to the broadcasts can readily determine that this was not the case.
“KFYI is inciting murder. In these tense times along the border, I think it’s particularly irresponsible. The FCC should consider a fine against the station that will convince KFYI that it will be to their financial disadvantage to do this again.”
April 10th, 2006 at 4:23 pmThat sounds suspiciouly like terrorism to me…

April 10th, 2006 at 4:25 pmI’d hazard a guess on the “WEll, do you think you could kick Bush’s arse” and say, yeah. and I’m a 19 year old who could stand to lose a good 20 to 30 pounds. Not being a boozer and hooked on psychotropics and anti-depressants gives me the edge though. And I’m having a real hard time coming up with a president that GWB could best in a fist fight. Second term Reagan maybe.
April 10th, 2006 at 4:27 pm/actually had an argument with a righttard over who would win in a fist fight, GWB or GEORGE MOTHEREFFING WASHINGTON!
Isn’t it already a crime to incite others to violence?
April 10th, 2006 at 4:30 pmTelling Bubba, Cletus, and Jimbo to slap red-dots on their 30-06s and snipe some wetbacks sounds like inciting violence, doesn’t it?
Saying illegals should be killed, it’d be fun, and here’s how to do it=incitement.
Tundra
Actually that line was drawn a while back when a couple of KKK members took their leader at his word. (When Bennie Hays Said “If a black man can get away with killing a white man, we ought to be able to get away with killing a black man.”)
After the two murderers were found guilty, the mother of the victim sued the United Klans of America and won, thereby bankrupting them and taking the land the organisation rested on. Theoretically the law shows that any immigrants whose family members get killed crossing the border may have a case for damages against the station where Brian James works, or Brian James himself, provided the killer happened to listen to that show.

Actually he’s advocating taking over the job the US Border Patrol and Texas Rangers once did as part of their every day routine. If the violence against our Border Patrol agents and US citizens coming from the other side of the border continues to escalate they may just begin once again to handle intruders the old fashioned way. Adios amigo.
April 10th, 2006 at 4:32 pm#76 - So you think that the systematic brutalization and murder of the indigenous peoples by Euro-Americans was morally right or at least excusable because of their different values? Violence is violence, no matter what lens you view it through. One of the reasons we examine the past is because many of the trends that existed in the past still live with us today, such as American Exceptionalism - the “noble” task of bringing republicanism to the “savages” of the world. This was a common excuse employed by the United States government as it appropriated the lands of Native Americans. And again, the old wine in new bottles is being brought out to justify our invasion and exploitation of Iraq.
There are certainly many things to be proud about in our past, but there are also many dark, blood-soaked stains upon our history. To deny the past is to deny who we are.

April 10th, 2006 at 4:34 pmI-WRONG-I is wrong again.
The US Border Patrol does not murder illegals.
In fact, there was a case where a Marine stationed at the border shot an illegal and he was tried for murder.
Once again, I-Wrong-I, you have proven that you are a psychopathic moron.
April 10th, 2006 at 4:36 pmBruce,
it sounds like the station itself needs to get involved, not the FCC. If they station ended up facing serious lawsuits from the families of murdured Mexicans I think they would move to censor this dude. That would be an internal censor, not a government censor.
April 10th, 2006 at 4:36 pm98,
I agree with Krazny here. Pressure the station, pressure the companies that advertise on the show. Assemble outside the station. Heck Sue the station in a civil court when some yahoo shoots anywhere near the border. Just don’t give them more power than they aleady have.
April 10th, 2006 at 4:43 pmWhat is scary is Brian James is not a lone nut in the conservative bowl.
The bowl is full of nuts.
Ann Coulter and G. Gordon Liddy have both advocated murdering people.
The right wing in this country has gone stark raving insane.
We need to institutionalize them and put them on strong medications.
We can start with I-Wrong-I, who is obviously psychotic.
April 10th, 2006 at 4:44 pmI think IRI is already institutuionalized and on strong meds, you can see how well it is working.
April 10th, 2006 at 4:46 pm#76 - So you think that the systematic brutalization and murder of the indigenous peoples by Euro-Americans was morally right or at least excusable because of their different values?
It was war, not murder. The fact that it wasn’t a fair fight in no way makes the outcome any less moral than your blathering about the so-called murder of “indigenous” people. Liberal self loathing Dimwit.
Violence is violence, no matter what lens you view it through. And again, the old wine in new bottles is being brought out to justify our invasion and exploitation of Iraq.
It’s funny how you left wing fucktards never mention the mass slaughter of tens of millions of “indigenous peoples” by the Russian and Chinese communists. That of course was a noble cause. Only America can be evil.
There are certainly many things to be proud about in our past, but there are also many dark, blood-soaked stains upon our history. To deny the past is to deny who we are.

April 10th, 2006 at 4:49 pmAmericans kick ass and take names and any blood that was shed on behalf of our country was blood well spent. To think and say otherwise is to show yourself to be a traitor to our country who defecates on the graves of our fallen heroes.
Ladies and gentlemen,
I submit for your approval a vast cross section of what’s tearing this nation apart. I would suffice to say that the majority of us on this page do NOT live in the areas of the country most affected by “illegal aliens”, or “Undocumented migrants” or, “Guest workers”, if you will. To critcize comments that should or should not have been made in jest or otherwise, without feeling the affects of the problem is unwarranted.
April 10th, 2006 at 4:49 pmGiven: The speech/commentary was inflammatory, but which side isn’t? Democrats hate conservatives, Republicans hate liberals…all news reports on either side are now coming from entertainers, not journalists. Don’t kill them, but erect a wall with one door - and make them enter as “legals” - just like the majority of our ancestors did.
People of the United States, now is the time not for bickering…but for standing up for common sense.
This is how the Rwandan genocide started. Don’t underestimate the power of radio to incite bloodlust. James needs to be arrested this afternoon on federal hate crime charges, and rebuked by every public official.

April 10th, 2006 at 4:59 pmI am amazed anyone would dare argue for, support, defend or align themselves with Mr. James and his concept of cold blooded murder in the name of self-righteous vitrial. Seriosly folks… leave all the petty name calling aside, the silly “claims”, the school yard finger pointing and return to the core issue.
Mr. James seriously advocates (until he proves otherwise) committing heinous crimes. There is no civility within him nor should there be any quarter for his ideas whatsoever, and yet, it’s a debate?
Stand back and look at it and try to recall when anyone of logic in your upbringing said in some fashion or other that what Mr. James is inciting is either goodness or merciful!
I know my momma didn’t allow me to be wrong; did yours?

April 10th, 2006 at 5:00 pmJust thought I’d leave you folks with the form-letter response I received from the turds in charge at KFYI when I wrote to demand that James be fired. It makes perfect sense that they’re a Clear Channel station.
============================================
Newstalk 550 KFYI in Phoenix is responding to Friday’s letter to the FCC from Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard and U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton, calling the letter an election-year political ploy that is an effort to muzzle free speech.
Program Director Laurie Cantillo says, “We are extremely disappointed that this letter was issued in the form of a ‘press release’ at 5:04 PM on a Friday, when neither Mr. Goddard nor Mr. Charlton were available for comment. The letter was written at the request of the Arizona Interfaith Network, which is not a charity but a left-wing political lobby with ties to organized labor. 550 KFYI is the only media outlet in the Valley that has been calling for secure borders, and we will fight this attempt to curtail our First Amendment freedoms.”
Goddard and Charlton take issue with a March 8 evening broadcast, in which fill-in host Brian James satirically discusses “border roulette”–shooting anyone who crosses the U.S./Mexico border illegally one night a week. Cantillo says, “550 KFYI management does not condone violence as a solution to the illegal immigration problem. Mr. James was asked to issue a disclaimer within the same broadcast making it clear that KFYI does not endorse his comments. Listeners who heard the segment in context understood that the remarks were made in satire, as management has not received a single listener complaint.”
The Goddard/Charlton letter does not reference which part of the U.S. Federal Code has been allegedly violated, and Cantillo notes, “We have concluded that no statute has been violated and that the letter is entirely without merit. The FCC customarily refrains from involving itself in the content of specific programs that might be regarded as program censorship. Mr. Goddard and Mr. Charlton have fallen prey to a political ploy to drum up support for the April 10 pro-immigration rally.”
“We take our responsibility as broadcasters very seriously,” says Cantillo, “We have provided balanced news coverage on the immigration issue and our hosts have a wide range of opinions as to how to solve the problem of illegal immigration. We welcome all viewpoints and encourage healthy debate on this serious issue. I am proud to live in a country that affords free speech rights to even those who are here illegally. Broadcasters need to have the same rights.”

Boycott. But more than that, spread the word as widely as possible that Clear Channel thinks it’s important to promote the rantings of a man who believes that murder is an acceptable response to illegal immigration.

No thanks necessary - but just say no if he asks you about “barebacking.”
April 10th, 2006 at 5:27 pmI just wrote KFYI. I live in Arizona and I find this a total and complete embarassment to this state. My letter:
Advocating the cold-blooded murder of ANYONE over the public airwaves is unacceptable and should not be tolerated by the radio station’s owners.
James’ comments, “What we’ll do is randomly pick one night - every week - where we will kill whoever crosses the border. Step over there and you die. You get to decide whether it’s your lucky night or not. I think that would be more fun…[I’d be] happy to sit there with my high-powered rifle and my night scope,” are not acceptable.
I repeat. THEY ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
I know that KFYI thrives on right-wing lunacy, but these comments have crossed the line. How long do you think he’d be allowed to remain on the air should he advocate–say–murder of an elected official, or a public servant like a policeman. Adding to the stench that’s rising from the broadcasting booth is the overt, outright racism inherent in his comments.
THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
James must make a public apology and then be premanently removed from his position at the station.

Let me get this straight. You two (IRI, and MA) are looking at the website of a small group of people who are advocating returning the southwest states to Mexico. You are also linking the larger progressive liberal movement to this minority. Last time I checked none of the progressive posters on TP, or the democratic party was pushing this position. I also don’t see our government, or the millions of US citizens who live in the south west states taking this seriously. Time to face get off the meds and clear your heads a bit.

BAJA BEACH FRONT PROPERTIES WOULD BE ‘SOLD’ TO AMERICANS CANADIANS-JAPANESE-CHINESE,WHO ARE WEALTHY ENOUGH TO RETIRE-SETTLE THERE,AND ALL MEXICANS LIVING IN BAJA WOULD BE DEPORTED TO THE MEXICAN MAINLAND,BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL (THE RICH ONES)CORRUPT AND WOULD CONTINUE TO DO WHAT MAINLAND MEXICO DOES,SO WELL…..CAUSE MEXICANS TO LEAVE THEIR COUNTRY!!
THE CHATHOLIC CHURCH WOULLD ALSO BE BANED FROM BAJA,BECAUSE (THEY) ARE THE REASON FOR THE OVERPOPULATION OF MEXICO-ANYHOW!
AND WE WOULD ALSO BEGIN TO INSNARE-CATCH-LITERALY ‘NET’ ALL THOOSE ILLEGALS (ON CAMERA)WHOM PROTEST ON OUR STREETS,WHO WAVE MEXICAN FLAGS,BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THAT (THEY) DID NOT ‘WAVE ANY MEXICAN FLAG’ WHEN THEIR CRIMINALY-CHICKENSHIT-ASSES ….CROSSED OUR SOVERIGN BORDERS,SINCE THEY KNOW THEY WERE GUILTY AND NONE WOULD WEAR A MEXICAN-FLAG T SHIRT-EITHER,BECAUSE IT WOULD ‘CLASH’ WITH THEIR( ‘DRESS LIKE AN GRINGO’ )CAMOFLAGE-APPERANCE,TO FOOL THE BORDER PATROL!!
