VIDEO: Cheney Loudly Booed During First Pitch

Vice President Cheney threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the home opener of the Washington Nationals game today. The crowd was was less than thrilled to have him there, loudly booing over the Fox News reporter. (Note: Fox producers muted the crowd audio halfway through before letting viewers “listen in” after the pitch.)

Watch it:

The good news: Cheney’s pitch landed in the dirt, not in someone’s face.

UPDATE: Wonkette has the pool report: “Gorgeous day, 70 degrees with happy, red-capped turnout est at 25k. VPOTUS stepped out onto field dressed in khakis and a Nats bomber jacket to the sound of thunderous boos and catcalls…”

UPDATE II: Garrett at FishBowlDC wonders whether the media tried to censor the boos.

  2. Krazny says:

Cheney’s numbers have been even lower then Bush’s. Washington DC is overwhelmingly democratic too. I think Kerry took like 98% of the vote in DC or some grossly disproportional percentage.

  11. DS says:

Fair and balanced apparently means that they didn’t pipe in cheers rather than just muting the boos!

  12. Jeanne says:

He would have been right on target if Harry was the catcher.

  13. Marie says:

I doubt Cheney cares – but it was encouraging to know that he was loudly booed.
That should be the least of his criticisms. Being marched out of the White House to the Capitol where he would be placed in wooden stocks and pelted with rotten fruit by citizens, before being taken to court and tried for “high crimes and misdemeanors, being found guilty and having to spend the rest of his days with a cell mate named “Bubba,” would be a far more suitable criticism.

I think Jon Stewart will have a nice segment on this one.

Cost of an illegal Iraq War – $280,000,000,000

    Projected national debt – $9,000,000,000,000

Having the Vice-President being booed by 45,000+ Americans during America’s Pastime – priceless

  16. Zookeeper says:

#13 – You’re right, Marie, Cheney probably doesn’t care if he gets booed. I think of the boos as maybe, just maybe, catching the attention of the sheeple. We also know that if he does get a roommate named “Bubba,” he sure as hell won’t be pitching.

I’m glad he didn’t shoot anyone in the face — today.

  17. Curveball says:

Knowing how Cheney operates, I bet he put vaseline on the ball, injected himself with human growth hormone, and STILL couldn’t get the ball to the catcher’s mitt.

  18. Anon1 says:

Sounds like Cheney is in his last throes.

  19. Bubba says:

Hey, if Cheney gets sent to prison, he might get to throw out the first ball…and chain!

  20. Southwest Bob says:

Cheney doesn’t care. . . he has gotten very rich while “working” as VP. . . . when his term is over, he will continue to run the the repubs and doesn’t give a damn what ordinary folks think of him. This man is all about using wealth to gain power and control of corporate America. Don’t think for a minute that he cares about how he is viewed by anyone but his ultra rich corporate friends -and- they also don’t care about anything the average American may think or say.

  21. Drew Mackenzie says:

He must’ve been hot as hell, what with the corset, the wires, the bulletproof vest, and the bullpen jacket… I’m just thankful he didn’t get heatstroke or they would’ve wasted valuable time on SportsCenter.

    He easily earned those boos.

Anyway there was a radio broadcast of the game and every time the nazi team had the ball the commentator turned up the volume of crowd cheering and down when the allies were in possession of the ball or scored. Just flashed back to me when I read this story.

I think Cheney got less than he deserved. Cheney is rich criminal who would shame organized crime. He has caused more death and loss of wealth while feathering his nest. His pitch reminds of his manhood or lack thereof. Here is a war wimp and chicken hawk who has provoked a war while he got five deferements duing the Vietnam War. He wishes away other parents’ sons and daughters by provoking a war that is he too chicken to fight. He should retire before he is impeached. I cannot understand how the Fox Cowards could mute the jeers. I guess they do not need government censorship because they censor themselves so well. 110. Aleka says:

To #60 (Why do Americans hate America?):

Huh? Cheney and “America” are not the same thing (a simple fact that I thought someone should point out).

Also, hard to say if utter disgust for Cheney policies of war profiteering, torture, etc. can be equated with “hate”. People are booing and laughing at our vice president as an expression of our extreme dissatisfaction with the Bush regime. So sorry if Mr. Cheney might suffer any ridicule as a consequence of his actions, but ridicule is a minor thing compared to what many of us believe he has inflicted on our country and the rest of the world.

And just to mention it (in case you didn’t know), the name of our country is “United States”. America is a continent (actually 2 continents – North America and South America).

  112. WiscoDuk says:

    Tracy,

You also seem to think President Clinton was the hero of everyone here. How often do you hear your anti-Clinton rhetoric rebuffed with staunch defense of him? Now I can’t speak for everyone- but I wasn’t much of a fan of his after he signed NAFTA. (Albeit under much pressure from congressional republicans and big business.) He did, however, have much more concern for “the little guy” than the current president ever will.

Think about it- Why do you “dislike” Clinton so much? Is it because Rush and Sean do? Or have you actually put your OWN thought into the subject. (The BJ shouldn’t count for much.) Judging by your posts- you’re a “little guy” too. Why do you consider yourself a republican? You’re evidently not extremely educated and probably have an average job making an average wage. What do you think Bush and republicans (neocons) have done for you?

BTW- The NASCAR thing is laughable to say the least.

I think it’s laughable that TV nws is muting the audio. All they do is make thesemlves look stupid and clueless—-as though there WERE no Internet, or email, or telephones for God sakes and the ONLY place people could get the skinny on anything was tuning in to Channel 4. Keee-RIST!\

Those 25,000+ people who were in the stands all have families, friends and egroups. The booing—a spontaneous expression of natrional hostility towards a venal corrupt figure—- is an established fact and no amount of muting from the Big Three or Cable can erase it. People will tell their own, their friends and their homeys, who will tell their own, THEIR friends and THEIR homeys….and so an and so forth. And all this will take about seconds.

it sickens me the treatment Lord Cheney received. do you know how much we encourage our enemies by booing a baseball pitch at a time of war?

    you people are diseased!

been a weird day, there was cheney being booed in his sixteen bulletproof vests and on iranian tv they showed scientists dancing, waving test tubes.

did someone drop something in my OJ at breakfast?

  127. The Oracle says:

Doesn’t Cheney’s pitch to the mound perfectly describe the Bush administration and much of the rest of the Republican Party…low and in the dirt?

I mean, Karl Rove’s mind definitely is “low and in the dirt.”

And weren’t the Swift Boat Liars’ despicable tactics also “low and in the dirt”?

Everything about today’s twisted and warped “culture of corruption” Republican Party, therefore, is “low and in the dirt,” including their use of religion and their trashing of the wall separating church and state.

From Alberto Gonzales and his illegal wiretaps used to push his right-wing religious agenda to Fred Phelps dishonoring our nation’s fallen soldiers at their funerals…”low and in the dirt!!!”

From the right-wing controlled FCC getting all hot and bothered about a nekkid breast being flashed to their caving into Robber Baron media monopolists…”low and in the dirt!!!”

From Republican cooking of the books over Medicare to their cooking of the books in an attempt to destroy Social Security…”low and in the dirt!!!”

From tax cuts for the wealthy while more and more of our nation’s children go to bed hungry each night to even more tax cuts for the wealthy while our soldiers fighting for us overseas end up scrounging for protective materials to keep themselves safe…”low and in the dirt!!!”

From no-bid contracts given to their crony corporate/political pals to the placement of unqualified crony corporate/political pals in critical government positions that has actually contributed to the deaths of so many U.S. citizens (both pre-9/11 and pre-Hurricane Katrina)…”low and in the dirt!!!”

The Republican Party of today is definitely the “low and in the dirt” party.

And apparently, the only thing that may save our democracy from the “low and in the dirt” Republican Party is that, come November, concerned and patriotic U.S. citizens vote the “low and in the dirt” Republicans out of office, and bury the corruption of the current Republican Party six feet under the dirt.

See there you go again thinking that ‘Glib’ is ‘Funny’. I referred you to the research on sociopaths and psychopaths – obviously you didn’t go get the help you needed. Back here making those STUPID, GLIB and BORING remarks of yours while all the time THINKING you’re funny. Well you’re not, you sound RETARDED.

Lets begin with the drug remark. Don’t you think that’s an Ironic remark coming from a republican that elected a coke and alcohol addicted president? You sure look stupid with that remark – sistah.

Lets focus on the retardation that is your ignorance of the american school system. Since you went to PRIVATE school, you can be forgiven for being a complete MORON on the subject. But just to help you with your ’shortbus’ (a public school reference you might not get unless you read something other than reichwing propaganda) understanding – here goes.

    1) DC is a federally controlled territory, and not a state – why do you say would this matter? See next items.
    2) Public schools are funded by a combination of federal, state and local funding.
    3) DC being just an urban core without the tax base of a suburban area is restricted on revenue resources (taxes) while having often very high property taxes and cost of living issues.
    4) Most states have less expensive rural areas that offset the cost of schools statewide, and reduce the cost of purely urban schools.
    5) This means the federal government must pick up the tab for the high real estate and land costs requiring a GREATER federal cost

Well considering that the district is the only ‘place’ in the country with nothing but a CITY, as well as large amount of urban poverty – that explains both the poor schools, and their costs.

But being the STUPID MORON that you always are, you prefer to make GLIB and IDIOTIC remarks that show how out of touch you are. And just so you know, most people who watch DC games live in Va. and Md. – something a witless and charmless and uncultured fool like yourself wouldn’t know.

Cheney, booed by some as he walked to the mound, got even more catcalls after his throw — a far cry from President Bush’s fastball at last year’s home opener. [...]

    Quite a bit!

“He did, however, have much more concern for “the little guy” than the current president ever will.”

How do you define concern? Being against welfare reform? Increasing everyone’s taxes?

“Think about it- Why do you “dislike” Clinton so much?”

Because he was so fake and shallow…

    http://www.preventtruthdecay.com/mainmiscfuneral.htm

He was a womanizer while he was married.

Because he was more concerned about HIS legacy than the country.

Because he governed by polls not principles.

Why do you consider yourself a republican?

I consider myself a conservative. I am not AT ALL thrilled by the current GOP leadership or Bush for letting spending get way out of control. I think we all want what is best for the U.S. and the world, I just have a far different philosophy on how to obtain that goal than many here in this blog.

“You’re evidently not extremely educated and probably have an average job making an average wage.”

Just because I have a conservative point of view that makes me not educated? I have a dual degree in Architecture/Structural engineering from Texas Tech University and have been a practicing architect for six years and am an associate architect for the second largest health care architecture firm in the U.S. and make 66k annually. I am as well educated as anyone in this blog, including yourself.

What do you think Bush and republicans (neocons) have done for you?

Bush has engaged the terrorists they way they should have been for nearly 10 years now. They have significantly lowered ALL of my taxes. They haven’t created more unnessary regulation on the business community, i.e. my industry. I am not one to look to the government to “do something” for me, i.e. give entitlements to improve my life. The government should help those who need it, but as we all SHOULD know the U.S. federal government has far too large of a budget and wastes billions of dollars every year.

BTW- The NASCAR thing is laughable to say the least.

Yeah, especially the one who lied about Bush being at the race.

  159. Tracy says:

“Clinton hasn’t been the president for 5 years.”

    National healthcare?

Hillary tried that back in the 1990s and the American people told her to go take a flying leap.

Securing ports? The Democratic leadership, i.e. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi were silent untill the Dubai ports deal was revealed, just like the Republicans were. No one seem to have a problem with the Chinese running the west coast ports either. Why is that? BOTH parties have been ignoring this issue and like all politicians they are blabing and making speeches how they are the ones who are going to secure our ports. BTW on this huge border security issue, it was the Minute Man project that has brought this issue to a head…very much a conservative movement/group.

    Paying down the debt?

Their solution would be to raise taxes and not cut federal spending except for the military even during a war.

“that stadium full of booing americans should clue you in, buddy.”

Yeah that Washington D.C. is a very liberal town.

BTW where is the Democrats plan to fight this war on terror? I haven’t seen one yet other than them demanding we go BACK to treating it like a criminal issue and use the courts to fight the terrorists rather than covert intelligence and international spying.

I already pointed you to the democrats.senate.gov – if you want to see security plans, go look. And racism and bigotry generally is a conservative movement – and that’s what the minutemen is REALLY about. And the same conservative big tent also holds much of the voters/campaign contributors who benefit from the cheap illegal labor – and that’s the main reason the border will be a problem.

    “Paying down the debt?
Their solution would be to raise taxes and not cut federal spending except for the military even during a war. Tundra”

You ALWAYS raise taxes during a war – it’s called CIVIC SACRIFICE? You served in the military and you don’t understand this? I’m surprised. Besides, raising taxes on the wealthy and pumping it into infrastructure projects has historically produced economic growth and MORE revenue. This is exactly what Clinton did in the 1990s. You may not like taxes, but they make a country work, and without them you have anarchy, chaos and collapse.

“Yeah that Washington D.C. is a very liberal town. Tundra”

Who told you that? The town of D.C. is largely poor and black, but the greater DC area spreads in to VA and MD and is FULL of conservative fat republicans who take their clients to baseball games that DC resident’s can’t afford to attend.

“And racism and bigotry generally is a conservative movement – and that’s what the minutemen is REALLY about.”

The is a very biggoted statement from a extreme position of ignorance on your part. Do you have some evidence of this? Please look beyond skin color, if you have that ability, and investigate their stated goals and the people who started the program.

“yeah, and it just passed in Mass. – the world changes, catch up.”

Who is going to fit the bill? You would actually be in favor of turing over 1/3 of the U.S. economy to the feds? Mass. can do what it likes and raise it’s taxes even higher to pay for their experiment, but this should definately should go no further than being an optional state run program.

You ALWAYS raise taxes during a war – it’s called CIVIC SACRIFICE? You served in the military and you don’t understand this?

During the Cold War, especially during the Kennedy and Regan years taxes were cut and tax revenues increased because of economic growth leading to a larger tax base. Remember this war that we are in right now, i.e. this war on terroism, will probably last for a LONG time like the Cold War did. If you keep taxes high for more than about 5 years you will be guranteed to have slowed economic growth which will in turn hurt the war effort. BTW I never said I served in the military. My brother in a major in the USAF and I have friends in the 1st Cav. out of Ft. Hood.

“Besides, raising taxes on the wealthy and pumping it into infrastructure projects has historically produced economic growth and MORE revenue.”

Please provide an example where increasing taxes has actually produced economic growth. During the 1990s Clinton raised taxed on the wealthy in order to pay down the national debt, NOT to stimulate the economy. You seem to have this weird notion that the government is responsible for economic growth, which is not the case in the U.S.

“Who told you that? The town of D.C. is largely poor and black, but the greater DC area spreads in to VA and MD…”

Washington D.C. has been a Democratic party controlled town for as long as I can remember. Is the mayor a Republican? No. Is the city council controlled by the Republicans? No. Are the vast majority of the elected officals of that city Republican? No. Also do you really believe all of those “supposed” thousands of Republicans in the stands were really the ones doing the booing? I doubt it.

I like this laundry list, unfortunately there isn’t really a clear and stated way to achieve there goals.

    Examples:

“To Defeat Terrorists and Stop the Spread of Weapons of Mass Destruction, Democrats will:

    • Eliminate Osama Bin Laden, destroy terrorist networks like al Qaeda, finish the job in
Afghanistan and end the threat posed by the Taliban.

    How?

    • Double the size of our Special Forces, increase our human intelligence capabilities, and ensure our intelligence is free from political pressure.

Special forces have been dramatically increased. Intelligence free from political pressure? How do you ensure that in Afghanistan considering the violent consequences for those who “squeel” on the Taliban?

    • Eliminate terrorist breeding grounds by combating the economic, social, and political
conditions that allow extremism to thrive; lead international efforts to uphold and defendhuman rights; and renew longstanding alliances that have advanced our national security objectives.

Again where are the specifics? Where is the economic plan to help Afghanistan’s economy?

    • Secure by 2010 loose nuclear materials that terrorists could use to build nuclear weapons or “dirty bombs.”

Unless a terrorist state like Iran gives some of that material to the terrorists.

    • Redouble efforts to stop nuclear weapons development in Iran and North Korea.

    Specifics?

“This strategy calls for increasing special operations forces, curbing terrorist financing, preventing the growth of radical fundamentalism, and advancing U.S. interests through diplomacy and development in the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia..”

Another good goal list but very short if not completely absent on mechanisms or ways to implement them.

“An objective of total elimination of North Korea’s nuclear and missile
    programs, with fully adequate verification;”

No specifics mentioned afterward how to do it considering the IAEA isn’t even allowed in the North Korea.

“Military pressure to include the threat of strikes on North Korean WMD
    production, testing, and deployment facilities;”

If they have nukes, like most experts agree they do now, then this is an asinine thing to contemplate.

“A combined Russian-EU guarantee to give Iran the opportunity to buy
    additional civilian nuclear reactors.”

They already did. Which is how and why that they say they have produced enriched uranium with their centrifuges. No deal.

“If Iran agrees to the moratorium, in an appropriately verifiable way, and we
maintain the status quo on all other issues with Iran (i.e., human rights, being the #1 state sponsor of terrorism), we will be no worse off then we were yesterday on other issues in this relationship.”

So the Democrats are going back to the old failed game plan of containment with no real desire to see real political change in the Middle East. Nice.

    “FIRST GOAL: PREVENTING NUCLEAR TERRORISM…”

“The key to preventing “proliferation” to terrorists is stopping the production
of fissile material for weapons and safeguarding all fissile materials
    everywhere from terrorists.”

Well if Iran gets nuclear bomb fuel, which it says it already has, this is a foregone failed goal.

“SECOND GOAL: STOPPING THE PROLIFERATION OF URANIUM
    ENRICHMENT AND PLUTONIUM REPROCESSING CAPABILITY”

“The world will need more nuclear power to fuel a growing demand for electricity without increasing dependence on fossil fuel.”

“Nuclear power is a key part of any strategy to contain carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels.”

You are OK with nuclear energy? Not really a Democratic party platform.

“THIRD GOAL: STRENGTHENING VERIFICATION AND COMPLIANCE OF
    THE NPT”

“The IAEA’s inspection rights, obligations, and procedures should be
extended from fissile material-producing capabilities to all nuclear
    weapons-related activities;”

That is kinda hard if a country like Iran tells the inspectors to leave. Which they have.

“FOURTH GOAL: PREVENTING “BREAKOUT” OF THE NPT”

“Withdrawing states forfeit any technology they obtained for “peaceful
purposes” during their period of membership;”

LOL! How do you tell that country to “give back” the technology?

    “HOMELAND SECURITY”

“To Protect America from Terrorism and Natural Disasters, Democrats will:”

    • Screen 100% of containers and cargo bound for the U.S. in ships or airplanes at the point of origin and safeguard America’s nuclear and chemical plants, and food and water supplies.

That is impossible, but it makes for great rhetoric. LOL!

    • Prevent outsourcing of critical components of our national security infrastructure — such as ports, airports and mass transit — to foreign interests that put America at risk.

Well we better tell the Chinese who already run our ports on the West Cost which BTW the Clinton administration had no problem authorizing in the late 1990s. That’s of course not relevant to you if you don’t consider the communist Chinese government to be a threat…which is insane to think.

    “Iraq”

“Ensure 2006 is a year of significant transition to full Iraqi sovereignty, with the Iraqis
assuming primary responsibility for securing and governing their country and with the
    responsible redeployment of U.S. forces.”

How? Specifics? NATO help?…oh, they refused.

“Insist that Iraqis make the political compromises necessary to unite their country and
defeat the insurgency; promote regional diplomacy; and strongly encourage our allies and other nations to play a constructive role.”

    Insist? Good luck!

“Strength of the Iraqi Insurgency Increases:”

“Since November 2003, the insurgency has grown from 5,000 fighters to 15,000-20,000 fighters.”

    That’s unproven.

    “Democratic Record on Iraq”

“In June 2005, Democrats Fought to Require the President to Submit A “Strategy for
    Success” in Iraq.”

Which the Democrats haven’t done in this report.

“More Funding for Body Armor and Other Equipment for Our Troops in Iraq.
Every step along the way, Democrats have sought to ensure that our troops were fully
equipped for the war in Iraq”.

Except for Senator Kerry and others.

That’s just a quick run down on a 123 page document in which OVER half is nothing more than a long criticism of the Bush Administration. No real specifics or plan, because a plan has to have mean and methods which this report doesn’t have.

IT REALLY BOTHERS ME THAT WE AS EDUCATED AMERICANS HAVE TO ATTACH EACH OTHER PERSONALLY BECAUSE WE CAN NOT AGREE ON POLITICS. I MAY OR MAY NOT AGREE WITH TRACY BUT AT LEAST HE IS ENGAGED. WHAT SHOULD REALLY BOTHER PEOPLE IS NOT THE DIFFERENCE IN THE PARTIES BUT THE INDIFFERENCE IN THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES. WHILE PEOPLE BOO AT SPORTS EVENTS THEY DON’T TAKE THE TIME TO GO OUT AND VOTE AND CHANGE THINGS. YOU CAN ATTACK ME PERSONALLY IF YOU FEEL THIS WILL BE EFFECTIVE BUT I WILL NOT RESPOND BECAUSE I WILL BE USING MY ENERGY TO CHANGE MY COMMUNITY AND MY COUNTRY. PERHAPS WE ALL SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON THAT SMALL ARENA AND THEN MAYBE THIS CUT THROAT FORUM WILL NOT BE NECCESARY.

[...] Cheney Loudly Booed During First Pitch Vice President Cheney threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the home opener of the Washington Nationals game today. The crowd was was less than thrilled to have him there, loudly booing over the Fox News reporter. [...] I noticed it Saturday night, as I watched the opening ceremony for the Pepsi 400, and found a Wizbang post about it from a link at Hugh Hewitt’s blog.  The same crowd that booed Bill Clinton, cheered enthusiatically, if not wildly for Dick Cheney Saturday night.  And liberals just don’t get it.  The second comment following the Wizbang post is from Oliver Willis… So was baseball inherently anti-American when Cheney was booed? Not sure why insulting a hyper-masculinized, cock sucking, latently gay Dick Cheney so often includes disrespectful references to girls and women. Alas, the castration complex is alive and well in America men. When will you little boys stop insulting eachother by comparing eachother to women? If being female is really the worst insult/most horrible condition you can consider, you’d best rethink your own sexuality. Perhaps wearing leather chaps at “The Stud” in downtown San Francisco would be more fun for some of you? You can meet your pal Dick Cheney there…
