McClellan: Media Should “Publicly Apologize” For Reporting On Mobile Weapons Lab Story
On May 29, 2003, President Bush said “We found the weapons of mass destruction. We found biological laboratories.” This morning the Washington Post revealed that a Pentagon field report transmitted to Washington on May 27, 2003 “had already concluded that the trailers had nothing to do with biological weapons.”
Today during the White House press briefing, Scott McClellan demanded a public apology from the news media for covering the story:
You know, I saw some reporting talking about how this latest revelation — which is not something that is new; this is all old information that’s being rehashed — was an embarrassment for the White House. No, it’s an embarrassment for the media that is out there reporting this.
I brought up with some of you earlier today some of the reporting that was based of this Washington Post report. And I talked to one of network about it…they expressed their apologies to the White House.
I hope they will go and publicly apologize on the air about the statements that were made, because I think it is important given that they had made those statements in front of all their viewers. So we look forward to that happening as well.
McClellan’s complaint is that the Washington Post and others suggest that President Bush may have known about the report before he made definitive statements that the trailers were for the purpose of building biological weapons.
When McClellan was asked when the White House became aware of the Pentagon field report, however, McClellan couldn’t say. He told the press corps “I’m looking into that matter” but the answer was “not the point.”

I was struck that McClellan said he saw “some reporting,” not identified, that called this revelation an “embarrassment.” And I doubted it at once, since it is an indictment, an accusation, a j’accuse!

That’s why I posted the ‘dysfunctional’ modification below. I know lots of children of alcoholics that have become very well adjusted individuals. However those that retain their dysfunctional upbringing seem particularly drawn to reichwing ideology. It’s the ’strong daddy’ and ‘don’t make waves’ upbrining of a hidden alcoholic culture.

Easier said than done. It’s a very difficult thing to admit to yourself that one of your parents was dysfunctional. It’s something I only somewhat recently came to terms with. Accepting that you’re a codependent isn’t easy either. You blame yourself. And you do self-destructive things in an attempt to assuage your feelings of inadequacy. As a result of living through it, I have a lot of sympathy for people who were subjected to ’significantly less than ideal parents’ during tehir formative years. President Bush has to go to war. This decides it!” I said “I don’t believe those pictures. I don’t believe they show anything. I don’t even believe they were taken in Iraq, or taken this year, or anything.” Family and friends were incredulous that I could be so jaded.
My point is, those pictures were incredibly effective at convincing thousands of Americans that the war was justified. They played on news channels continuously for more than a day. Proof that government agencies KNEW that they were irrelevant at the time that were being used as the sole proof of WMD is news, and should be put on the front page.
We need to make the point that we have been actively, knowingly lied to again and again. And we have had enough.

It was reported in The Gaurdian on June 8th, 2003 that those weapons labs were nothing but trailers for filling balloons. The article by the Gaurdian noted that the report from the field was known by Tony Blair and was an embarrassmnet as Blair as well as Bush were claiming WMD related. Thus by June 8th of 2003, Tony Blair, the British press and the British public were aware of the truth.
In the Washington Post article, it was cited that over the summer of 2003 the biolab lie was repeated by Colin Powell and Dick Cheney among others. This was AFTER the Gaurdian article had been printed.
The Gaurdian article goes on to tell that those trailers were actually sold to Saddam BY the British.

April 13th, 2006 at 5:36 amThe current Administration doesn’t get it. WMD and the mobile weapons lab that wasn’t are central to what got us into this mess that we are in today. It’s not surprising that a “newly” discovered government document will reopen the story even if there is no new news in it. It’s the document and it’s relationship to the what happened that’s the news.
If the administration would just admit that there was no weapons of mass destruction and that the adminstration’s judgement and policy was based on bad information and beliefs, then the document probably would not rise to the level of being news. However, that’s not the case, so any “new” piece of information relating to the issue has a decent chance of becoming news.

April 13th, 2006 at 12:46 pmMcClellan says it’s irresponsible for the Washington Post to issue a report with material that may well be factually correct, but nonetheless leaves the impression that there’s more to the story. I agree completely. Wordsmithing to try to convince the public of an conclusion for which one has no evidence (or, worse, knows to be false) is scandalous, and is worthy of scorn and derision.
As an example, in 2002 and 2003, the administration repeatedly and blatantly manipulated words to dupe the public into believing that (1) Iraq / Saddam Hussein had been involved in the 9-11 attacks, and (2) Saddam had the means and the desire to attack the US, and that such an attack was imminent and could only be prevented by invading. The MSM obediently relayed their words, and thus left the strong impression that these were actual facts for a large portion of Americans. This was just about as irresponsible a job of collective journalism as one can imagine. Finally though, when anyone bothered to call the administration on these lies, they would simpley respond that they never said those exact words.: they never said directly that Saddam had something to do with 9-11 (they only claimed he gave material support to Al Qaida, itself a factual error); they never said that an attack from Iraq was “imminent”, they don’t ever recall using that word. Examples like these abound; you can probably think of four or five of them yourself over a cup of coffee…
Such dishonesty is so common with these people that I doubt they even know when they are really telling the truth. In typical fashion, they tried to tamp down the current furor by citing findings in the Robb-Silverman report that seemingly absolved the administration of any wrongdoing here. Of course, the argument is falacious because the report only stated that there was no evidence that the Administration pressured the Intelligence Community to produce certain findings. That’s not what the WaPo seemed to imply in its story. The Post only seemed to imply that the Administration chose not to discuss items they felt would contrtadict the story they were telling. Could this be true? Is it any coincidence that the President talked at length about a CIA white paper (written by non-experts) that said exactly what the President wanted it to say, but has never even mentioned the findings of the DIA report (written by top experts) that contradicted him — even three years after the report was written?
You see: they didn’t pressure the intelligence community, they simply buried all the intelligence that they didn’t like!
