The Washington Post story before:

The first pitch of the Washington Nationals’ second season at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium was low and away, bouncing in the dirt before being scooped up by catcher Brian Schneider. For that, Vice President Cheney received a round of boos from the home crowd this afternoon.

Actually, as the video documents, the booing started from the moment Cheney hit the field and continued until he left. After protests by Americablog and Firedoglake, The Washington Post has changed their copy:

Vice President Cheney threw out the ceremonial first pitch, a right-handed toss that bounced in the dirt to the outside of the plate before being scooped up by catcher Brian Schneider. Cheney, booed by some as he walked to the mound, got even more catcalls after his throw — a far cry from President Bush’s fastball at last year’s home opener.

The new version is more accurate, but still clings to the notion that a significant amount of the booing was in response to the quality of Cheney’s throw. It’s contradicted by the Post’s own Reliable Source column which reports Cheney “drew boisterous boos from the moment he stepped on the field until he jogged off.”

If they are willing to lie about that, obviously they are willing to lie about really SERIOUS issues. A “news” agency must be held accountable for telling the truth about EVERYTHING it publishes otherwise, readers are always left guessing which stories are actually being told truthfully. They don’t get to decide when to be truthful based on whatever rational they may have. . . the truth is the truth regardless of who is involved. . . .that’s the point to holding WaPo accountable even on the first pitch story.

    Again, all the left-wing blogs have neglected to mention an essential aspect of the story. The key event of the afternoon was not Cheney’s poor throw, but the excellent pitching of 25-year-old Mets rookie Brian Bannister, who, in only his second start, pitched seven innings while giving up only 3 hits and one run.

    Cheney can bounce a pitch anyday. But the Mets developing a solid young pitcher? That happens only once every 20 years.

    Wapo had the video on their site yesterday, and it is painfully obvious that he was being booed by what sounded to me like 80%+ of the crowd. It was deafening. The people that heard it reacted when IT walked out. Very clear to anyone that listened. I wonder if there are pictures of the crowd that the TV crews have?

    I was living in Wahington D.C. when the NY Times published Joe Wilson’s editorial. Whether you like Wilson or not, whether believe him or not - one must agree that the assertions he made in his editorial were very news worthy.

    The Washington Post had the story buried back on page “A19.” And there was no lead in from the front page to the story. Either you fumbled through the paper and found the Wilson story or you didn’t.

    Other stuff on the front page that day? A story about the owner of the local NBA team , Abe Pollin. And a story about a Chinese woman who had achieved significant wealth in China.

    Serious accusations levied against the Vice President and the President? Page A19.

    Incredible.

    Embarassing, actually, when you think that this is the paper that broke Watergate.

    Idon’t disagree. But, as every relationship is a two-way street, I think part of that blame must be shifted to the general public whose vocabulary is not exactly up to par. I had some students who did not understand the meaning of the word ‘emit’, as in a star emits light. By high school, emit is so far below SAT vocabulary that many colleges are starting to lower their minimum entry level requirements to accommodate the downward trend (so that they themselves can afford to stay operational).

    I consider myself a progressive. And I am all for helping people who need it,and accountability of those with endless amounts of capital and power. But I also believe in instilling a sense of personal responsibility in our culture that has people interested in better themselves. Even if it means purchasing a dictionary and looking upwords every now and then.

    yesterday there was a story of this very issue. a family of 8: mom and dad and 6 children, ILLEGAL. are living in a $300,000 dollar home drive a suv and pay only $200 dollars/mo in rent. and they are saying thanks to american welfare system(section 8) and sucking our mothers and fathers social security. and not to mention a BIG THANK YOU TO THE TAX PAYERS.

    now this is inexcusable. i take it as a slap in the face especially being a veteran of the usarmy. now that is BS.

    No argument from me on that one. I’ve been reading ‘A Culture of Fear’, and it’s amazing the statistics of what the media will focus upon for ratings and aversion.

    Basically, 95% of people who are murdered personally know their attacker, while the media has hyped the ‘dangerous stranger’ to the point of exaggeriating every minor grievance - such as road rage and violent teenagers - to the point that we isolate ourselves from everyone to our own detriment as a democracy.

    The media has the attention of millions of Americans at once. And after watching ‘Good night and Good luck’, I was appalled by the modern version of CBS and it’s contemporaries.

    I think you make a very good point. It speaks to the problem of economics and the media.

    My theory is that many of these media organizations are jealous of the FOX ( FAUX? ) News model.

    In almost every society or nation - there is the ” us vs. them ” crowd. Or the ” my political party, right or wrong ” crowd. And of course, the ” my country, right or wrong ” crowd.

    The ( evil ) “genius” of the Fox model may be that they have not only come to embrace this group as their “market share” - but they have also realized the “pavlovian” nature of this group. If you keep feeding them the ” us vs. them ” stuff - they will be “customers for life.”

    This may explain the string of events at the Washington Post. From hiring that conservative blogger to the recent specious editorial re: the leaks. Maybe they feel the need to go after the Fox news market share. And if burying the Wilson story when it first came out wasn’t a “mistake” - then this process may have been underway for about 3 years now.

    I went to http://www.bigcharts.com and did a quick look at the stock prices.

    News Corp ( NWS ) : Today 17.96. A year ago ( 4/15/05 ) 16.59. Three years ago - 13.67.

    Washington Post ( WPO ): Today 744.00. A year ago - 880. Three years ago - 732.00.

    To be fair - NWS has interests beyond news media and there may have been special dividends and etc. that the chart is not picking up. But absent that - looks like the Washington Post is chasing the money.

    Prior to ‘03 - News Corps stock price was kind of hurting from mid 2001 to mid 2002 and The Washington Post was sideways to higher over the same period.

    Would anyone agree that the march to war in the media started around late 2002?

    I don’t think News Corp would have the customers they have now if not for the Iraq war - and I think they know that. Big time.

    It’s one thing to editorialize opinion in the papers; it’s another thing to slant the news report. One is acknowledged as bias, the other is supposedly objective. The Post has blurred that line and in doing so has joined so many other publications in American who are cowed by Bush&Co, have compromised standards of profesisonalism, and have therefore prostituted themselves.
    The public is paying the price.

    So it’s a little late to reply to #1, but don’t jump to conclusions that the reporter is to blame. As an ex-reporter, I can testify that a story’s slant is created by the editor as often as not. An editor can take a story, then slice, dice, and implant whole paragraphs of utter fiction, and still run it under the original reporter’s byline. And the reporter can’t do a thing to stop it, or rectify it. Correction only happens, as a rule, when the slant or fiction is embarrassingly exposed.

    Also, it doesn’t say the boos were in response to his throw. It just says there were more boos after his throw. uh…I watched it and after his throw, as he walked off the field there were more boos.

    If this were a stand alone event - then yes. It would be splitting hairs.

    But in the context of all of the other things - the hiring of a dubious right-wing blogger, the reality challenged editorial regarding the leaks - which was somewhat sympathetic to president - and then there is #21’s observation that a major story ( the Joe Wilson editorial … a story, to me, that is somewhat reminiscent of the Washington Post’s Watergate glory days ) possibly intentionally kept off of the front page and pushed into the bowels of the paper …

    In the context of all of these things, I would have to say that we are not splitting hairs over what seems to be a pattern of the Washington Post’s recent pattern of splitting or spinning the truth.

You may agree with the man or not, support the administration or not, but this kind of reaction is just as disrespectful to the role of VP as it is to the person in it.     First of all - “Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean stand by the President or any other public official save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country.

    It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country.

    It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country.”

    This is a quote attributed to President Theodore Roosevelt.

    So - in summary. (1) The people have the right to “boo” a public official with an 18% approval rating. They obviously don’t feel he has been efficiently serving the nation. These public officials are supposedly “tough” people who knew that they would hear it - one way or another - from the American people if they do an unfavorable job.

    And (2) - If a man is “boo-ed,” a newspaper or TV media should say ” the man was boo-ed.” ( or - the man is being “boo-ed” in the case of live TV ).

    It is really as simple as that.

    Don’t attempt to mute it.

    Don’t attempt to spin it.

    Just say: the man was boo-ed.

    Everytime Cheney comes out from under his rock to pretend to be “one of the guys” he embarrases himself. His visit to the Katrina devastated south was the first.

    I heard from someone that was there that they were booing Cheney and stomping their feet on the way to his “sissy” pitch, and as he went back to his secret place beneath the rocks.

    T ‘I-RIGHT-I’ comment #17 and your position that Cheney getting booed at the ballgame isn’t the least bit important, I’d like to counter by saying it is VERY IMPORTANT when a sitting Vice President cannot attend a public event without getting booed by that public. The same would be true for any high level administration official.
    It’s important that the general public gets a chance to express their feelings directly, and just as important that the administration official hear it! Too many of the almost scripted appearances of this President and Vice-President are held in front of nothing but highly screened audiences in which there is about a 1% chance of there being a person in the audience who is not one of their few remaining idealogue supporters who hate to admit (Just like Bush, Cheney, Rummy) that they’ve ever made a mistake in their lives. A bit of insecurity there, isn’t it?
    When an administration rules by nothing but fear, fear, and more fear, the public eventually overcomes the initial fear shock and begins to look at the reality of things, but there will always be that 30% of the public who give in to their fears, fears which in most of this group are numerous.
