Rep. Bradley Leaves Missile Attack Out of Editorial Critical of Iraq Coverage

In January, Rep. Jeb Bradley (R-NH) traveled to Iraq with five other members of Congress. Upon his return, he described his experiences there in an editorial for the Manchester Union Leader — “Despite Difficulties, We are Making Steady Progress in Iraq” — in which he repeated the conservative talking point that the media is too negative in its reporting on Iraq:

One common complaint, though, is that Americans at home get too little news about the progress being made. These troops are concerned that the terror campaign and the media’s predominant focus on suicide bombs and IED attacks will do precisely what the terrorists want: undermine our nation’s confidence and resolve.

Here’s what didn’t make it into his op-ed. From today’s Boston Globe:

Rep. Jeb Bradley, R- N.H., and several other congressmen had a close call during a visit to Iraq this winter.

Word is just coming out that the military plane carrying the group had to dodge a shoulder-fired missile as it flew from Baghdad to Kuwait City in January.

Bradley told the New Hampshire Union Leader that shortly after takeoff from Baghdad, “the crew started taking evasive measures. They started swerving and diving the plane and sent off flares that distracted the missile.”

The C-130 was carrying Bradley, five other congressmen and four military officials.

Bradley said he kept the incident quiet because he wanted any news from his visit to focus on the troops. “The story was about them, not us,” he said.

That’s exactly the point. The story is about the troops. But their real problem is not slanted media reports, it’s the extraordinary dangers they face every day.

And I bet Bradley would have later appologized for being in the way of the missle had he been hit; taking the blame personally just so it wouldn’t reflect badly on the situation out there.
    These assholes are unbelievable.

  7. Optimist says:

Don’t you see, you are making his point for him. Rather than focusing on the “bad news” of the dire security situation in Iraq, we should be focusing on the “good news” that the plane was NOT struck by the missle due to the courage and competence of the military personnel that were operating the aircraft.

And in other “good news” from today, the majority of our troops will NOT be shot or blown up today. Also, although most Iraqis will not have adequate utility services or other such luxuries, the majority of them should survive the day. Freedom isn’t free, especially when it is being imposed by US.

In other words: In order to get people to back the war, the Bush administration supporters willfully engage in lies and wanton propaganda, ignoring reality if it does not fall in line with their preconceived notions.

These are the same people who have been entrusted with policy setting, and resolving the country’s many problems.

Can we trust their solutions will be based on facts and reality? Methinks not.

  11. Gerald Gibson says:

I just read his article… if he wants good news presented then why didnt he present any? He didnt mention almost being shot out of the sky, but he also did not explain what these “good” things are? What is going on that is good? An election that resulted in nothing? Was he refering to the Kurds? They had their own area under control even while Saddam was in power. Does he mean the conditions are getting better for the American soldiers that shouldnt even be there? Is he talking about the Iraqi divisions that “will in the near future” (always getting nearer) be able to fight on their own?

He gave ZERO good news about any progress… he said there was progress and then didnt prove it. He said things WILL happen in the future, but how does he know that? We have heard that over and over…it is always wrong. This is a joke. If even these people can not find the “good news” when they are willing to make it up then how is the media going to find it?

  12. Badmoodman says:

#10: It’s hard to think of a better example of a demonstrable lie. – - More like selective memory. I.E.D.s are the elephant in the room though, so with the Republicans, they think that just not getting caught in a lie is the same as telling the truth.

    Good News from Iraq today:

Formation of government still stalled : Good news=producers of “Survivor” in talks with Iraqi officials to turn Prime Minister search into reality series.

British air force doctor JAILED for being conscientious objector : Good news=Less doctors means less wounded (reverse application of the “If you build it, they will come” fantasy theory).

Coordinated mortar attack wounds 15 marines : Good news=none were reported to have died.

” One day I was walking leisurely along the summit of the hill in rear of our works when a minie ball struck the ground only a few feet before me, raising the dust and causing me to seek a safer location before a another shot should follow, perhaps more to my discomfort.”

Note Found at Vicksburg National Military Park.

If Rep. Bradley, however, had written the note it probably would have read more like this: ” Went for a walk. Birds were chirping. Nice day. Decided later that I should get some exercise and go for a run.”

As you mention – the Civil War was a tough war. Lt. Burt was honest about what he encountered during his war. Rep. Bradley has chosen to be less than honest about this one.

You do not have to be “religious” to believe in religion. This is how the founding fathers believed. They KNEW religiousness lead to evil priest and evil government doing evil deeds against the people. They talked about the inquisition alot. They believed RELIGION was needed to keep the unreasonable people (Katrina, I-R-I, MightyA) in a state of virtual calm, but that RELIGIOUS people were at best not likeable and at worst dangerous.

  64. Uncle Togarma says:

IRI you talk much about religion. Yet even you seem to misunderstand the simple fact that written history simply does not go back to mans first thoughts.

As I understand your Judaism the VIS or Adonai or the YWHW is the Gods name. Yet Even the Rabbis cannot Describe what they Call Active Knowledge or “VIS” and thats Exactly why they Call it VIS because WORDS do not exist to explain that ‘Wisdom’ The Qubbalah is nothing more than Shamanistic Knowledge, Yet they call others ‘MOONBATS’ whom call that higher power ‘Z’. This Letter ‘Z’ is not a Spaceman IRI, It Comes from the Bible in John 1:1 AETZI the Moonbats call that Higher Power ‘Z’ Just as The Jewish Might say Adonai. Physicists Call this energy the God Particle, or ‘Z Zero’, a Zero Point energy.
Others call it Ying and Yang…A-Tom Adam Adom Brahman…
It matters not the skin Color or the religion IRI because thought comes from the energy in matter, not the matter itself.

and deary, Katrina – when exactly did you “find” religion? Excuse me, but I come from a very PROGRESSIVE AND CHRISTIAN family so F*ck off!

  83. Ryan Neat says:

“#60 – Krazny – Why, when Bush and the rest of the Western World agrees and posits the WMD theory is he a LIAR – while the rest (some from your camp) are just “misinformed”? Comment by mighty aphrodite ”

Fabricated and FIXING intelligence goes a long way to convincing the ‘western world’. And MUCH of it, including the French and German governments disagreed with this un-intelligence from your brownshirts. The Reichwing media spread themselves like a cheap HO (something you’re obviously familiar with) and spewed these lies daily. Many believed them – but all that shows is how desperate Reichwingers were for oil that they’d so viciously lie and attack others.

You’re a putrid bag of crap you lying fool.

  84. Spudge_Boy says:

None of these morons are really Christians. They try to use religion as a tools to control people, while going against EVERYTHING Jesus stood for. ANd it is why they are losing their base. The retards here are the lunatic fringe, not the real republicans. They are Neo-Con puppets.

  85. Katrina says:

#81 – I am allowed to have an opinion on religion without serving in the war. Now, answer my question, would Jesus Christ support partial-birth abortion if he were alive today? The answer is clearly NO.

  86. madashell says:

katrina – another thing – I pray to Jesus every day to protect me from followers like you.

  87. Uncle Togarma says:

#68 – Jesus would probably not be a fan of partially delivering a baby before sucking its brains out and ripping its skull in half, but hey it’s a woman’s right!

The left should NEVER talk religion. They know NOTHING about it except how to attack it.

    Comment by Katrina — April 13, 2006 @ 3:19 pm

Oh But I did not attack it you did, you see 90% of the people in this country consider themselves ‘christian’ and they say this is a christian nation, yet these Christians created these laws that allow that babies demise? First I did not say that I agree with Abortion, thus you have judged me, and that you as a Christian should not do. Rationalize to me, a non-Christian, in your sense, how the Christians created these Laws that you caterwaul continously about, that have nothing whatever to do with me?
You Cant Can you Katrina? =)
now, this said, be angry at yourself and your religion, not me.

  88. Ronald Reagan's ghost says:

Rep. Jeb Bradley, R- N.H., and several other congressmen had a close call during a visit to Iraq this winter.

Word is just coming out that the military plane carrying the group had to dodge a shoulder-fired missile as it flew from Baghdad to Kuwait City in January.

Any bets these are the same missiles Reagan sold Iran back in the eighties? Republican traitors.

  89. unbelievable says:

I ask anyone here, atheist or otherwise to explain to me just what exactly the word ‘God’ instills in your mind? A huge man 80 miles tall? a single Atom? A spark of Light? The First breath? Energy? Time? Wisdom?

    Comment by Uncle Togarma — April 13, 2006 @ 3:18 pm

It used to be my Grandfather, and then I gave up religion. I’m an Atheist in context to the idea of an independent, Christ-nazied version of a jealous and angry god who punishes people for being exactly what he made them to be, but Agnostic to the notion that the difference between us and a corpse is that life force that connects the universe. Therefore, my image is the Grand Canyon. Billions and billions of years of evolution, the tranquil voice of Mother Nature, and one of the last places in America where you can still see a hazy arm of the Milky Way at night.

  90. Ryan Neat says:

“81 – I am allowed to have an opinion on religion without serving in the war. Now, answer my question, would Jesus Christ support partial-birth abortion if he were alive today? The answer is clearly NO. Comment by Katrina ”

It’s not clear at all. The old testament clearly states that abortion is not a CRIME, unless it is forced on a woman, and then it is only a PROPERTY not a MURDER crime.
Jesus had the opportunity to change that law/rule/value, and he didn’t.

The whole abortion MYTH is created by evangelicals looking for a wedge issue, and to CONTROL women’s bodies – PERIOD. It’s the white male fear of losing power that props up this issue.

And can you idiots please stay on topic? This is about IRAQ, not ABORTION!!!!!!!

  91. madashell says:

katrina – another moronic statement – would Jesus Christ support partial-birth abortion if he were alive today?

so you’re saying that even if the baby had no brain or heart – it doesn’t matter to the MOTHER who is carrying it? DO NOT EVER SPEAK FOR ME OR MY GIRLS!

Pro child, pro family, PRO CHOICE

and as deeply personal as it is – NO ONE’S BUSINESS

  92. Uncle Togarma says:

For it was the Christians that after all created the Abortion laws is it not? 90% of America is Calls themselves Christians. yet these same Christians don’t follow the Bible? Can you Say Hypocrites Katrina? Yes Even Bill Clinton called himself a ‘Baptist’..In Fact Clinton Attends more Church than Bush, not to mention Scalias little “Finger” he gave to people at Church. That what Scalia Did was Blasphemous, yet hes a Conservative?

    WOW, What blatant hypocrisy

  93. Katrina says:

    RE: # 41

and all of the other IRI posts.

If this war suits you just fine – then here you go:

You can show up at this location -

    4152 Ft. Campbell Blvd.
    All American Center
    Hopkinsville, KY 42240

This is a recruiting office for the U.S. Army. It is at Ft. Campbell, Ky. – the home of the 101st Airborne. If you join the 101st and get yourself over to Iraq – you will definitely see some action.

It is also a Special Forces base.

When and if you enlist and prove yourself to be a capable soldier – you can apply to join the Special Forces.

If going to Kentucky is too inconvienent for you right now – then go to:

    http://goarmy.com/special_forces/find_a_recruiter.jsp

and simply type in your zip code.

There you go, IRI – you are good to go.

    Good Luck.

  98. Democrat Soldier says:

#93 – Katrina is projecting her thoughts onto the people she opposes.

It’s the ultra-radical right-wing-nut fringe that wants to make any disagreement with their positions a thought crime.

It’s the Republicans that came up with the so-called “free speech zone”.

Don’t blame your opponents for the statements of your crowd, sweetie.

  99. Uncle Togarma says:

Bush has created a ‘Religious War’, yet we are not supposed to discuss this Religion? Idiots?

I should go before I type what I do not mean.

    Comment by Uncle Togarma — April 13, 2006 @ 3:24 pm

I think it’s actually 80% now. I just saw a study done by religious people, and if they say 80%, I figure it’s a maximum.

  101. Katrina says:

    madashell – Pro-Woman, Pro-Freedom, Pro-Life.

AND I pray to Jesus to protect my children from women like you who indoctrinate our young girls with pro-abortion propoganda.

  102. madashell says:

One more thing about religion, and I’ll stop. Has any woman ever stopped to think that all three major religions – are patriarchal? Do you suppose that was an evil Eve that gave that apple to adam?

  103. Democrat Soldier says:

#100 – Yes, that was the beginning of the so-called “war on christians”. They went from 90% of the population to 80%, and had to blame it all on SOMEONE!

Heaven forbid they take responsibility for their actions which drove people away from their churches.

  104. madashell says:

No, they can’t. It’s because they have nothing, so out comes the smoke machine and a box of mirrors…

  106. madashell says:

also Katrina – it also appears to me you are a rapturer – so why bother even acknowledging me – you’ll get your chance to see all of us heathens suffer while you rise to heaven. WHAT A JOKE!

    - Jeremiah 14:13″

Exodus 21:22: “If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart [from her], and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges [determine].”

“Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up. Hosea 13:16″

I think you need to read the whole Bible, sweetie, and not just the verses that support your prejudices.

I love how you know what other people are thinking. You should change your name to Miss Cleo.

We’re anti-Iraq-war, remember? That makes us against slaughtering people who are different.

You should think before you post.

  110. Gerald Gibson says:

    Comment by Katrina

    I agree.

You know what happens with every action?

    An equal and opposite REaction.

    ACTION:
Right: We add god to all Americas symbols during the 1950s. And put conservative pressure on the rest of America to make it appear to be “Leave it to Beaver” in happy America land.

    REACTION:
Left: We want civil rights for all. BLACKS and WOMEN! We want privacy to be gauranteed! We want government answerable to the people!

  111. unbelievable says:

Has any woman ever stopped to think that all three major religions – are patriarchal? Do you suppose that was an evil Eve that gave that apple to adam?

    Comment by madashell — April 13, 2006 @ 3:36 pm

Yep. It’s why I gave up Christianity (the religion I was raised). Because, the reality is that all life begins as female (why men have nipples). The Y-chromosome was an evolution of the X. It was a survival evolution that allowed greater diversity of the species through “cross pollination” which recessed weaker traits. Man came from woman. Not the other way around.

And while I’m on Biology, I’ll remind the Christo-Nazis that you evolved from a single cell (your momma’s egg) to an adult in a matter of 18 years. Why is billiions and billions of them so much less plausible for change?

Oh please, don’t project your secret desires on others, you hate spewing moronic fool. You’re the party supports the death penalty and pre-emptive strikes, and desiring to SUBJEGATE female bodies to be victims of rape, incest and carrying the resulting child. You’re a HATE FILLED FOOL, and a BROWNSHIRT NAZI SCARY FRINGE ELEMENT. I’ve never called for death, destruction or murder – the same can’t be said for you and your LUNATIC SELF!

    Mighty Hermaphrodite,

Murder = To intentionally kill without provocation requiring immediate self defense.

Inserting some appropriate (notes) we are offered prospective

Murder = To intentionally (and premptively) kill without provocation (factual, not implied or based upon falsehoods) requiring immediate self defense.

Either way the effort that you support and the message that you attempt to disseminate are based upon killing or, as you wish it to be called, MURDER.

However, your approach of arguing semantics is really quite petty and does not contribute to the conversation, and only serves to illustrate your desperation. Your effort to spin the discussion through diversion and blatant falsehoods is ironically apprapos to this thread in that it is a steller example of the application of the Representative’s approach of manipulating information and communications so as to control the message.

Of course, civilized and intelligent human beings know such to be “propaganda” and treat it accordingly.

  125. WC says:

Well, it’s been an interesting read, but…

    Back on topic (somewhat)…

I want good news from Iraq!

There…just wanted to catch your attention. Please continue reading.

You know, with all the whining from the Bush administration and the rightwingers about the MSM not reporting the good news coming out of Iraq, I figured one outlet that would be the exception would be Fox News…the mouthpiece of the Bush administration. So a few weeks ago I decided to regularly check their web site to see what I could find.

I figured any good news stories would be posted on the main page, near the top, so as to catch the attention of visitors, so I haven’t bothered with digging deeper into other pages. I also figured that with all the bad news being reported, Fox would want to keep stories of good news posted for days at a time.

I decided to do this about 3 weeks ago, but sadly I have not been able to check on it on a more regular basis…I’ve scanned the main page 3 times since beginning this quest for good news. I would have done so more often, but due to illness and a death in the family last week my attention has been elsewhere.

I’m going to ignore the stuff about Iraqi forces “leading a raid on an insurgent stronghold while coalition forces patiently stand by and watch.” I want the really good stories…you know, the ones about new hospitals and schools opening, power being restored to neighborhoods, the opening of new bridges, sales of Iraqi oil starting to pay down the rebuilding effort…things of that nature.

Bottom line…out of the 3 visits I’ve made, I haven’t seen one good news story at all. None. Zip. Zilch. I think I’m going to solicit help with my quest for good news. I think this would make an excellent nightly segment on MSNBC’s Countdown. They could check Fox’s web site on a daily basis and report their findings each evening. I’m going to drop them an e-mail and submit this recommendation.

    Really? Who? Where?

That is just plain horseshit. Unlike the neocon “intellectual” community (an oxymoron if I’ve ever heard one), people here don’t just believe bullshit, no matter how forcefully or assuredly you say it. Neocons are remarkable in that they lie to themselves and to each other, and KNOW they’re lying to themselves and each other, but that doesn’t fly here.

I defy you to give me a quote from a Democrat that has any standing that calls for murdering conservatives. And don’t say Ben Affleck saying someone who commits treason should be hanged, since I assume law-and-order conservatives believe the same thing, right?

But finding quotes from conservatives calling for murder or liberals, for example, are easy to find — in fact, they are an essential part of Regnery-published trash by well-known Republican authors.

So put up or shut up. Dance, monkey, dance.

Jews use the Torah. Essentially the old testament of the Christian bible.

  135. mighty aphrodite says:

Close, krazny (much closer than the self-proclaimed King James Bible scholar, Ryanne)- The Torah uses the first five books of the Bible.

  136. Ryan Neat says:

Mighty Moron is SUCH A STUPID MORON (S)HE CLAIMS THE KING JAMES BIBLE IS A NEW AGE BOOK!!!!

BAahahaha, For some STUPID MORON who lives in the middle ages, perhaps…

    Bahahah, now THAT’S RICH!

    And it gets worse:

“The Torah uses the first five books of the Bible. Mighty Moron”

WRONG The bible’s uses ALL of the books from the TORAH, not the other way around. Judaism came first – IDIOT DINGBAT.

And the hebrew word for KILL in Exodus refers to any pre-emptive or pre-meditated attack – just like YOU PROPOSED. He who attacks first KILLS according to Jewish/Christian law. The hebrew word is ratsach if you want to ask your momma what it means. But if you got your brains from her, don’t expect a reliable answer. Reliability isn’t your strong suit – hatred, bigotry, ignorance, stubborn stupidity (much like GW) an an inability to admit that you’re WRONG seem to be the only traits you have to offer.

  137. Ryan Neat says:

Mighty Moron probably doesn’t realize that Prov. 22:13 uses the same word to describe what a lion does to a slothful man. Animals kill humans, they don’t MURDER them. Murder is specific willful and malicious intent, but a Lion is neither – it eats instinctively.

Sorry Mighty Moron – but you’re WRONG YET AGAIN!!!!

I was trained in Christian Scholarship Mighty Moron – you sound like a 2 year old trying to describe particle physics. You’re in WAY over your head STUPID DINGBAT.

  138. Ryan Neat says:

And back to the thread at hand.

Rep. Jeb Bradley is just a Fascist Propaganda HACK that would prefer to lie to the american public to save his own political ass. What a SELFISH, DISHONEST, IMMORAL and HATE FILLED thing to do.

He’s definitely a republican, the lying sack of crap.

  139. Gregor Samsa says:

What is really funny (in a sad sort of way) about Rep Bradley’s editorial, is that despite his best efforts to spread the “good news”, the grim reality on the ground in Iraq seeps through his text. He also has no choice but to acknowledge the opposition to the Iraq war and occupation. Here are a few jewels:

(…)the determination of Iraqi police recruits in Ramadi who defied suicide bombers by volunteering to join the police even after an explosion had killed many recruits that same day.

(…)but the military and defense industry have reacted to a very determined and adaptive enemy by making necessary improvements to body armor and vehicles.

High unemployment and infrastructure problems still plague the country.

Americans have the right to question the faulty intelligence regarding weapons of mass destruction, the military planning for post-war Iraq and the use of U.S. forces to overthrow a dictator.

It is not possible to predict exactly when stability in Iraq will occur, but the progress is significant.

Why is Rep Bradley focusing on the bad news? Why does he hate America? Why is he undermining our troops’ morale?

  140. progressive and proud says:

Ryan, thank you kindly for ridding us of the dead weight. You are good at that.
