Breaking: Another General Calls For Rumsfeld’s Resignation

rums

CNN is reporting that a fifth retired general is calling for Rumsfeld’s resignation.

“I really believe that we need a new secretary of defense because Secretary Rumsfeld carries way too much baggage with him. … Specifically, I feel he has micromanaged the generals who are leading our forces there,” said retired Maj. Gen. Charles Swannack, former commander of the 82nd Airborne Division.

Actually, this may be the sixth general. Generals Newbold, Eaton, Zinni, and Batiste have gained prominent attention in calling for Rumsfeld’s resignation. But another less-noticed general, Ret. Army Gen. John Riggs, told the Washington Post recently:

[Riggs] believes that his peer group is “a pretty closemouthed bunch” but that, even so, his sense is “everyone pretty much thinks Rumsfeld and the bunch around him should be cleared out.”

Given the inability of Bush to do what needs to be done, it’s time to revisit one of “Rumsfeld’s Rules” pertaining to presidential staff:

Be able to resign. It will improve your value to the President and do wonders for your performance.

UPDATE: Reuters has another quote from Gen. Riggs:

Retired Major Gen. John Riggs told National Public Radio that Rumsfeld had helped create an atmosphere of “arrogance” among the Pentagon’s top civilian leadership. “They only need the military advice when it satisfies their agenda. I think that’s a mistake, and that’s why I think he should resign,” Riggs said.

Rumsfeld isn’t going to resign because he IS this administration, just as much as Cheney is and considerably more than Bush is.

The Project For a New American Century has infiltrated this government and they aren’t just going to lay down when they are asked to.

Yeh, in case you missed it, he got the full support of the prez today. The worse the news gets, the more the denial ratchets up. Nothing will change folks…you could lead these people to the stockade and they still wouldnt beleive it was even happening.

    4. Dr. Van Nostrand says:

Didn’t Rumsfeld say that he tried to resign and Bush said no? Maybe someone should ask Bush why he won’t let Rumsfeld resign.

    5. Zappatero says:

Rummy gave the answer, and the homework assignement, to the press: he asked how many generals had served before, and how many are against him?

The press should survey all living generals and present us and Uncle Donny with the results.

    6. For Truth says:

How is a person not allowed to quit? You say “I am quitting”, and then you walk out, and don’t come back.

    7. Geoff says:

Purportedly, he offered twice to resign, and while Im not sure I believe that, if it is true, it’s again Bush’s fault for being such an inept manager. But more likely, Rummy told Bush to tell the world he offered something that in reality he would never even contemplate. You’ll have to drag Rummy’s dead body from that position.

    8. jurassicpork says:

I seem to recall someone in the administration blowing off grim Iraq war assessments by former generals snottily blowing off their opinions and saying words to the effect of, “We don’t entertain the thoughts of former generals.”

On the lighter side: The WaPo’s Chris Cillizzi has got to be the stupidest carbon-based lifeform in the entire solar system.

Go read this blog posting and please tell me how Rep. Alan Mollohan (WV), even if he’s guilty, provides a full counterweight to the GOP’s “culture of corruption”?

What about the entire Ohio GOP, Hastert, DeLay, Cunningham, Frist, Ney, Noe, Bob Taft, not to mention Abramoff, who himself helped corrupt about two thirds of the GOP?

      This guy’s pathetic.

    9. Zookeeper says:

It’s always best to follow one’s own advice, Rummy.

Georgie won’t let him resign because finding a new secretary of defense will be a shitstorm he doesn’t want to deal with so close to the 2006 elections. It makes his brain hurt.

    10. WC says:

      #4

Yep…twice, as I recall. It was all B.S. IMO. Rummy basically walked up to Bush and asked for permission to resign. Bush refused, so Rummy went back to his seat. Brilliant, really. Rummy solidifies his standing with his supporters in the military and with Bush (and with the Bush supporters) by doing it the way he did. Otherwise, if he truly felt that he no longer was up to the job to the point of considering resigning, he would have stepped down no matter what Bush’s opinion was.

      Make that 7 Generals.

General Wesley Clarke told an audience in New Hampshire that he would fire Rumsfled on September 26, 2003.

Gen. Wesley Clark, told a New Hampshire audience Friday night he had only fired one person in his life. On Saturday he said he wanted to fire a second person: Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

When asked at a house party on the Seacoast about what he would do in Iraq if elected president today, he was met with applause when he said, “First of all I would change the Secretary of Defense. Then I would go to the commanders of the ground and go to Iraq myself personally and I would develop an exit strategy that gives us a success and lets us downsize our commitment there.”

Besides Rumsfeld, Clark also criticized Bush’s National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice for her views of the world and then U.S. House Majority Leader Tom Delay, also a Republican, for his vote on a measure involving Kosovo.

      Q. What should we do about Iraq?

      A. Step 1 – fire rusmsfeld.

Simple effective, and something all democrats could agree on.

    20. Wisco says:

13 – Good point. No one thinks Rumsfeld’s doing a good job, but canning him would mean admitting to a mistake – something the administration isn’t inclined to do even in the best circumstances. With the polls the way they are, Bushco would be less likely to lose Rummie, since it would be seen as just more bad news for the administration.

“But, there are also unknown unknowns. These are things we don’t know we don’t know …

( Many of these so-called “unknown unknowns” were only so in the mind of Rumsfeld. Good advice regarding both the wisdom and the execution of this war was quite abundant. )

Add General Tony McPeak – Air Force Chief of Staff. Led the Air Force during Gulf War 1

Add former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General John M. Shalikashvili – who took over as Joint Chiefs Chairman after Colin Powell.

Scratch – #2, #4 and #6. With all due respect to the senior Democratic leadership – they are not senior military personnel.

The point here is that this is beyond politics. Schwarzkopf is (was?) a Republican. McPeak was a Republican prior to the Iraq war. The same with Shalikashvili. McPeak and Shalikashvili switched parties because they were so disgusted with Rumsfeld ( and Bush/Cheney).

Rummy left out the fila category. “Unknown knowns” — things that we actually know, but don’t know that we know.

    33. Wayne A. Schneider says:

I can understand not accepting someone’s resignation the first time, unless the offense was so awful that continued service was unthinkable. But when a guy offers to resign a second time, you have to strongly consider accepting it absent some compelling reason why you shouldn’t. An offer of resignation shouldn’t be treated the same as “How ya doin’?” in the hallway. It’s serious! And this guy’s job performance was seriously bad enough to warrant outright firing.

Both Secretary Rumsfeld and President bush have failed this country miserably, and if either one of them cared one bit about their country, they would resign and let more competent people take over. (But not Vice President Cheney, who once shot a 78-year-old man in the face. He’s too scary.)

    34. beavercleaver says:

The most competent person to replace Rumy in Bu$h’s area is Jose the Gardner…and, Bu$h didn’t wanna promote him for Rumy—Hell, he’d lose a damned good gardner!

Take what #22 said – and roll it back a few years.

The McPeak and Shalikashvili defections were “more serious than most people realized” 3 years ago.

Hopefully Mr. Tim Russert will find the time to discuss the schism between the Senior Military and the Executive Office.

That could help a lot of people realize what is going on.

      Deep Background

In Washington it is hardly a secret that the same people in and around the administration who brought you Iraq are preparing to do the same for Iran. The Pentagon, acting under instructions from Vice President Dick Cheney’s office, has tasked the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The plan includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons. Within Iran there are more than 450 major strategic targets, including numerous suspected nuclear-weapons-program development sites. Many of the targets are hardened or are deep underground and could not be taken out by conventional weapons, hence the nuclear option. As in the case of Iraq, the response is not conditional on Iran actually being involved in the act of terrorism directed against the United States. Several senior Air Force officers involved in the planning are reportedly appalled at the implications of what they are doing—that Iran is being set up for an unprovoked nuclear attack—but no one is prepared to damage his career by posing any objections.

A strategical error is when you send too few troops to occupy another country. That is what happened.

So, use the term “thousnads of strategical errors”

Stolen military data for sale in Afghanistan
Portable computer drives peddled at bazaar outside Bagram Air Base

WASHINGTON – Just outside the main gate of the huge U.S. military base in Bagram, Afghanistan, shopkeepers at a bazaar peddle a range of goods, including computer drives with sensitive — even secret information — stolen from the base.

This week, an NBC News producer, using a hidden camera, visited the bazaar and bought a half dozen of the memory drives the size of a thumb known as flash drives. On them, NBC News found highly sensitive military information, some which NBC will not reveal.

“This isn’t just a loss of sensitive information,” says Lt. Col. Rick Francona (ret.), an NBC News military analyst. “This is putting U.S. troops at risk. This is a violation of operational security.”

Some of the data would be valuable to the enemy, including:

      Names and personal information for dozens of DOD interrogators;
      Documents on an “interrogation support cell” and interrogation methods;
IDs and photos of U.S. troops.
With information like this, “You could cripple our U.S. intelligence collection capability in Afghanistan,” says Francona.

Among the photos of Americans are pictures of individuals who appear to have been tortured and killed, most too graphic to show. NBC News does not know who caused their injuries. The Pentagon would not comment on the photos.

The tiny computer memories are believed to have been smuggled off base by Afghan employees and sold to shopkeepers. Whoever buys one can simply plug it into another computer, and in a couple of minutes, see thousands of files.

Other reporters have bought drives at the bazaar containing classified information, including names and photos of Afghans spying for the U.S. and maps revealing locations of radar used to foil mortar attacks.

“This is simply appalling,” says Col. Ken Allard (ret.), an NBC News military analyst. “You’ve got a situation in which the U.S. is going to be forced to change an awful lot of its operational techniques.”

Thursday, the base commander said he’s ordered an investigation into activities at the bazaar and into procedures supposed to keep sensitive secrets secure.

this is the whole story that was posted

But Dubya is constitutionally (in the only remaining sense of he word) incapable of admitting a mistake. “Never give up, never surrender” says the guy who’s even more a fraud than Jason Nesmith pretending to be Commander Taggart (and quite a bit less likely to be saved by some “and with one bound, Jack was free” screenplay work).

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

That’s a good point, I had forgotten about!

Rumsfeld was pulling people out of the Pentagon. Something everyone should remember when critizing him. If you were in one of the buildings that was hit and you were pulling friends and bodies of friends out of the rubble, would you be any different? Would you let it go? Would you ever change your stance from that day? Could you be objective with the intelligence brought in front of you? Would you consider stepping down and letting someone else handle it, or would you feel the most qualified?

We can all say “I would do this or that” but if that was me, I just don’t know.

    96. Spudge_Boy says:

Are you kidding me? Rumsfeld wasn’t pulling any god damn bodies out of the Pentagon. He was present, but he wasn’t dragging friends and bodies of friends out of the rubble. Give us a fvcking break. That is under Rumsfeld. He wouldn’t want to get his Armani suit dirty.

The only thing I will remember about Rumsfeld is that he worked under Cheney who worked under Nixon and him shaking hands with Saddam Hussien.

Ok, I am giving you a conspiracy site link here. Be careful how you use it. they pretty much hate Rummy, but even they aren’t saying he was’t pulling friends and coworkers out of the pentagon. they are slamming him for not doing the more important job of worrying about the country as opposed to “Helping the wounded”.(OK, make that argument, I’m a selfish type guy and will agree)

      http://www.medienanalyse-international.de/rumsfeld.html

At 9:53 a.m., just 15 minutes after the hijacked plane had hit the Pentagon, and while Rumsfeld was still outside helping with the injured,….”

“Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was in his office inside the Pentagon when the blast happened with no warning. Rumsfeld rushed to the area of the blast and for 15 minutes helped load the wounded onto stretchers. He then retreated to the National Military Command Center where senior military leaders pondered the question: What Now.”\

Paul Gonzalez, 46, a budget analyst, smashed a hole in the wall and crawled out. He was pulled to safety by Donald Rumsfeld who, although ordered by the secret service to leave the Pentagon, had refused.

“BRIGADIER GENERAL W MONTAGUE WINFIELD, US ARMY
For 30 minutes we couldn’t find him. And just as we began to worry, he walked into the door of the National Military Command Center.”

For nearly an hour since 9:40 apparently the NMCC did not know if Rumsfeld was killed or where he was – in times of cell phones, buzzers not only around Rumsfeld himself, but with his personal aides accompanying him. Is this plausible? Is it explainable? (ummmm take a deep breath and think about this one, do you answer your pager when helping people out of a burning building??)

Pretty much he was not securing the country and wasting his time helping people in immediate danger (as quoted by a very liberal site). If you want to slam him for other things feel free, I won’t argue. He did assist during 9/11.

The only thing I will remember about Rumsfeld is that he worked under Cheney who worked under Nixon and him shaking hands with Saddam Hussien.

Looking at it from our perspective, they’re all in it together, and firing Rumsfeld would in itself accomplish nothing but a shuffling of chairs.

From Bush’s perspective, Bush wouldn’t see any political benefit — he’d have to put in some college roomie who’d never been in uniform before, and that would go down even less well than Rummie. That sort of thing can only work when they have iron-fisted control over the media narrative, and they don’t have that now.

We can’t lose, politically, by calling for Rummie’s resignation, but our attention should really be focused on censure and impeachment. The replacement of Rummie would change nothing in any case.

I don’t know how many others wrote similar requests, but we all know no one listened. Rumsfeld thinks he is very intelligent, yet it doesn’t take someone with much intelligence to know if you topple a government you need to have something else to take its place. Yet all the NGOs with plans for an interim government who wanted to talk to him before the envasion were rejected. When Iraqis ran wild destroying centuries old artifacts, Rumsfield said they were acting out past frustrations and for several days did nothing to stop the anarchy. Of course one reason is because they didn’t have an interim government with proper controls in place. I wonder why. I wrote an email before the last election listing several instances why I thought Rumsfeld should be replaced. I told President Bush that if Rumsfeld was on his team, he would lose my vote. Obviously he didn’t need my vote. This administration has botched this war and our standing in the world. It sickens me. I am another American who is repulsed by this Bush administration. So hey warhawk, assuming that you actually did 20 years in the military (that’s the Army,
Marine Corps or Navy, the Air Farce doesn’t count) how much dick did you suck to get your rank? I’m assuming that since you know so much about how Clark got his fourth star that you sucked quite a bit to get that third rocker, have you gotten the taste out of your mouth yet you little bitch?

      http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12290187/site/newsweek/
An informal panel of senior Pentagon officials has been holding a series of unannounced private meetings during the past several weeks about how to proceed with a possible merger between the Counterintelligence Field Activity (CIFA), a post-9/11 Pentagon creation that has been accused of domestic spying, and the Defense Security Service (DSS), a well-established older agency responsible for inspecting the security arrangements of defense contractors. DSS also maintains millions of confidential files containing the results of background investigations on defense contractors’ employees.

i’m just curious as to who has the power to slow down the new world order… or at least, how to minimize their damage.

    116. joboo says:

scan the most cursory biography of rumsfeld and you catch a glimpse of how entrenched he is in some of the most troubling companies and developments in this country. Take your pick: a drug company he used to own developed Asparatame and is now owned by Monsanto. During the Cold War he was instrumental in building up the defense budget by making stuff up about the Soviet economy. He makes money on every bird flu virus sold to the government. He is the worst exampel of the worst administration in the history of this country. At least the last 100 years if you exccuse harding.

    117. is says:

Rumsfeld should be fired, arrested and sent to jail for war crimes, and facilitating the murder of 3000 citizens on september 11, 2001.

As should Bush, Cheney, and the rest of the PNAC mob.

Why are none of you talking about this? Do you not care?

    118. FATIMA DOMINGUEZ says:

NO MATTER IF ALL OFFICCERS AT THE PENTAGON CUT THEIR VEINS, RUMSFELD KNOWS SO MANY DARK STUFF OF BUSH AND CHENEY; SECOND EVEN IF HE DOESN´T CONFESS, RUMSFELD HAS ISRAELI ROOTS, THAT´S A POWERFUL BUT A COVERED UP INFLUENCE, SO ALL 3 KNEW IRAK DIDN´T HAVE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, BUT SO SIMULATED, AMERICAN BLOOD IS BEING USED TO CLEAN AROUND ISRAEL´S FEARS. SO DISGUSTING, BUT ACTUALLY A BIT MORE LATER, RUMSFELD AND HIS TEXAS ASSOCIATES WILL PAY. ASSOCIATES BECAUSE JEWS DON´T HAVE FRIENDS, ONLY ASSOCIATES…AND BY THE WAY, THEN DUMPED!!

    119. Think Progress » 8th General Calls For Rumsfeld’s Resignation says:

[...] Van Riper follows the calls of Generals Swannack, Newbold, Eaton, Zinni, Batiste, Riggs, and Clark. [...]

    120. ivan carter says:

zinni said “I spent 40 years defending the constitution, now Im going to start exercising my first amendment rights under it.”

why have critics on the one hand, stated that this undermines civilian control of the military and military authority, when generals have a right to speak as citizens, and yet on the other, claim that they should have spoken out sooner, before retiring, when that would have undermined military authority and civilian control far more, the very reasons they say they should not speak out now?

    121. Laura says:

This country is a mess right now. To kill a weed i.e. a dandelion, you do not simply remove the flower, you kill the roots.

There must be a neutral third party to investigate any and all insinuations. Bearing false witness is not the truth. Let’s stop our complaining and start resolving the problem.

I am tired of vague descriptions of terrorists, blah blah. I want facts, not heresay. 9th commandment: Thou shalt not bear false witness.

I am not convinced of anything at this time. Hence, there is the OBVIOUS need for a neutral investigative unit to investigate. This is for the well being of of us all.

If you are generals, then start acting like one. I am not impressed if you all have been guarding the territory that I live in.

Passing the blame is very lame.

Give me some answers, not BS and no propaganda. The sooner that everyone fesses up to horseshit and tells the truth. The sooner this will be a better place.

    123. CAPTAIN BOYCOTT says:

I question the motive and the timing. If Abu Graib is an atrocity than the bridge hangings was a nuclear war.

We all know the anti American, anti military media is demon rat infested. I cancelled advertising in the Stars and Stripes because it resembled the New York communist slimes.

It is harder to brain wash battle hardened troops than Kerry poison ivy league college kids but demoncrats will try anyhing to win reinfection.
      One nation under God.
      Two under Bush
      Three under Der Rumsfeld Marshall.
