covers the Smithsonian/Showtime controversy blogged today on ThinkProgress. Among the signatories to our letter opposing the deal: “filmmakers Michael Moore (’Fahrenheit 9/11′), R. J. Cutler (’The War Room’) and Alex Gibney (’Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room’); the actress and writer Anna Deavere Smith (’Twilight: Los Angeles’); the law professor Lawrence Lessig; and Jacoba Atlas, a senior PBS executive.”
UPDATE: The Washington Post has more.
Pathetic to sell out like this.

April 17th, 2006 at 10:56 pmOutrageous to sell out like this.
April 18th, 2006 at 1:04 amThis contract is basically scummy. It shouldn’t have been written in the first place, and I am telling you now that Showtime has a different definition of what constitutes a “Major” portion of any documentary to what the guys who sold the Smithsonian think it means.
It is time for you Americans to take back your country.
April 18th, 2006 at 8:49 amNext they (the Republican controlled Congress and the Department of Interior) will be selling the rights to film and photograph our national parks. Rupert Murdoch will be getting a fee for every tourist who wants to photograph the Grand Canyon or the Lincoln Memorial by the end of Bush’s term.
April 18th, 2006 at 9:26 amThis appears to be more of the same — the sale of everything American for profit.
April 18th, 2006 at 9:44 amWhat’s the bar code going to be for the Grand Canyon?
Using the government to create a monopoly position for one broadcaster seems a bizarre twist.
