Campaign funds Tom DeLay raised in the six weeks before he announced his retirement from Congress, bringing his total cash reserve to $1.4 million. (DeLay can now use that money to pay for his legal bills.)
He’s going to need all the money in his “legal defense fund” to keep the law off his back!
What’s going to help sink his legacy is his continuing the re-election fund raising from Republican supporters. They now realize his plan was to get more money for his legal defense fund rather than to get re-elected. His spin about how he just realized how vulnerable he is for re-election is quite obvious.
If the man had an ethical bone in his body, he’d donate the re-election money to whoever is going to replace him on the Republican ticket. It’s good news for Democrats that the man is more crooked than a digs hind leg.
#4 – I guess it all depends on who his cell-mate turns out to be! ;-)
Actually, if he does end up serving time for his felonious activities (which is doubtful considering the strings he can pull to get himself free of a deserved conviction) then I’m sure it will be in a minimum security facility where he will be able to play golf just about any time he wants to do so. Unless Mr. Cunningham has a “T-time” that conflicts with his. ;-)
#7 – Not just “yes he can”, but “yes, he will”. There’s no laws concerning how much can be transferred from “re-election funds” to “legal defense funds” of which I am aware. Now that you bring it up, I’ll check this out!
Some of his donors are less than pleased about his use of the funds they’ve provided. Others are more than happy to help out. Just because he’ll no longer be roaming the halls of congress does not mean his (corrupt) influence will suddenly dry up. He’s exactly like the cockroaches he used to exterminate when he worked for his income: never truly gone for good.
All that money will certainly pay for “favors” in the joint. Doubt he will go there though, most of these criminals spend lots for attorneys to submit continuances for years. He may be forgotten long before he goes to a real trial. Sad state of “affairs” this entire administration has created……Blessings
These doner clowns thought they were buying influence in congress. They gambled and lost. . . . they are chumps for attempting to use tommy’s corrupt means to gain an advantage over other Americans. No tears are necessary.
I know someone who spent time in a federal pen for white collar crime. There are no country club prisons. That is another myth of the right-wing. And his time was not always spent in federal prisons even though he plead guilty in federal court.
Still, I think Tom might prefer it to the state prisons in Texas.
If they can’t get him any other way, they can likely get a guilty plea from Tom by offering that in lieu of prosecuting his wife.
I am not familiar with the legal aspects in this situation, so I have to ask.
Can DeLay use the campaign money that was donated to him for whatever he sees fit? Can he legally do that? What are the legal limits?
I would think that after announcing his retirement he would have to give the money back, then raise more for his defense fund. Can he use the campaign funds for a purpose other than the originally intended?
Gregor, I believe that he is infact allowed to redirect the funds to his legal defense, and most likely was his plan when he raised the money since he’s known for sometime that he was unlikely to win re-election – even in the intellectually dead zone he represents. However, I don’t think the legallity of this or anything else he’s done has ever been of any importance to Tom – which is of course the reason he finds himself in need of such a fund.
Thanks for your response. And you are right -it’s not like pesky little details like law, ethics, morals, and good governance ever stopped this band of crooks and liars.
Looks like friends of Tom were doing some fundraising last week…..gotta support a strong proponent of family values, don’tcha know-
WORLD EXCLUSIVE
APRIL 17 2006–Venice,FL.
by Daniel Hopsicker
One of the two owners of the DC9 (tail number N900SA) busted at an airport in the Yucatan last week after lumbering in from Caracas, Venezuela carrying an astonishing 5.5 TONS of cocaine was appointed in 1993 to the Business Advisory Council of the National Republican Congressional Committee by then-Congressional Majority Leader Tom Delay, The MadCowMorningNews can exclusively report.
The plane’s registered owner, “Royal Sons LLC,†a Florida air charter company, was at one time housed in a hanger at the Venice Fl. Airport owned by infamous flight school Huffman Aviation.
Also of major significance is the fact that photos of the DC9, seized last Monday in Ciudad del Carmen, reveal that the plane is painted with the distinctive blue and white color color scheme of official U.S. Government planes.
Moreover, to reinforce the effect, or subterfuge, the plane carries an official-looking Seal painted on its side, which reads: SKY WAY AIRCRAFT, PROTECTION OF AMERICA’S SKIES, around an image of a federal eagle clutching the familiar olive branch in its talons. Many have been fooled into concluding that the plane belongs to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.
What’s the percentage of those donors who feel like chumps? Probably vanishingly small, sadly.

April 18th, 2006 at 10:45 amActually, a lot of them do feel like chumps.
April 18th, 2006 at 10:45 amA lot of money will be spent on his defense and it won’t make him any happier when he is in prison.

April 18th, 2006 at 10:55 amCan he really use this money legally for his defense? I wonder how these donors feel about this?
April 18th, 2006 at 10:56 amI am glad. This is less the other criminals in his party will get toward their election bids – or legal defense fund which many will need.

“Royal Sons”….I wonder if that would be referring to Poppy’s boys?
