This morning, the White House announced that Karl Rove will step down from his policy post and resume his focus on the midterm elections. An important question has not been asked: Will Rove also give up his security clearance?
To this day, Rove has maintained his security clearance in spite of evidence that he mishandled classified information regarding Valerie Wilson’s position at the CIA. Rove was named as in the indictment of Scooter Libby as “Official A.”
An Executive Order 12958, signed by President Clinton in 1995, states disclosure of an undercover agent is grounds for, at a minimum, losing access to classified information:
Section 5.1: Violation means: any knowing, willful, or negligent action that could reasonably be expected to result in an unauthorized disclosure of classified information.
Section 5.7.d: The agency head, senior agency official, or other supervisory official shall, at a minimum, promptly remove the classification authority of any individual who demonstrates reckless disregard or a pattern of error in applying the classification standards of this order.
In November, Newsweek wrote, “Having his security clearance yanked would not require Rove to resign as deputy chief of staff to President Bush. But it would prevent him from taking part in policymaking that relates to national-security issues, which would mean a much-reduced role in the Bush White House.”
Rove has now resigned his policy-making post and is focusing primarily on politics. Given Rove’s public intentions to make national security the focus of the 2006 elections, the White House should reveal whether Rove will be doing his political job while holding a security clearance.
I’m pretty sure he’ll still have a clearance. This is a cosmetic change only. As long as Karl is there, he’s in charge. End of story.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:18 amRove is Bush’s brain, he will always have a security clearance, otherwise Bush will be just a bumbling idiot. Come to think of it, maybe that has already happened.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:21 amHay, Bush, you want to make me happy.? Resign……Take the garbage out with ya. Put a for rent sign on our white house and let the American public decide who they want to lease office space in the white house to. Make your dreadful staff (infection) like Rove go in for shots and move them out……Blessings
April 19th, 2006 at 11:21 amHave they decided if she was actually undecover or not?
April 19th, 2006 at 11:23 amWell, since Karl has done such a fine job at the rudder in the White House, maybe we should rejoice that he is leaving to poison the upcoming campaigns?
April 19th, 2006 at 11:25 amSince when would Bush care about the rules or silly things like laws, anyway? Whether he does or does not have a security clearance he’ll still be in the mix.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:25 am#4 – Oh for f*ck’s sake, Squeegy.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:26 amLook it up — and not on RedState!
I’m too busy today.
I’m sure he’ll find some backdoor access to classified info, regardless of his status…Rove cannot swallow the fact he has been marginalized…whether it is sucking up or reaching around, he’ll find a way to keep his (access to) secrets
April 19th, 2006 at 11:26 am#4 Yes they did.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:28 am#4 Rove is not under cover…what other she are you talking about?
April 19th, 2006 at 11:29 am#8: I’m sure he’ll find some backdoor access to classified info…” – - And Karl will reciprocate by giving Jeff Gannon the courtesy of a reach-around.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:34 amRove was the brains behind getting Bush in the white house. This is not about hi security clearance, this is about the republicans being worried over the potentiol loss of majority control. Rove is going to be backing the RNC, and coordinating the new attacks. Expect to see ads soon about “tax and spend liberals” and “soft on defense liberals”
April 19th, 2006 at 11:38 am#7 Just cause your busy, no reason to be mean :)
“As to the leaks’ harmfulness, although the record omits specifics about Plame’s work, it appears to confirm, as alleged in the public record and reported in the press, that she worked for the CIA in some unusual capacity relating to counterproliferation. Addressing deficiencies of proof regarding the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, the special counsel refers to Plame as “a person whose identity the CIA was making specific efforts to conceal and who had carried out covert work overseas within the last 5 yearsâ€â€”representations I trust the special counsel would not make without support. (8/27/04 Aff. at 28 n.15.)”
Sounds like a yes to me, but to much mumbojumbo legal jargon for me to get, so maybe theres a subtle nuance in there somewhere my side can use to wriggle out of this.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:38 am(crickets chirpping)
DDDDDeeeeemmmoooocrats….where are youuuuuuu
GAME ON!
-Will Rove decide this election as well?-
April 19th, 2006 at 11:42 am#13 – Considering how many times “your side” has wriggled out of major controversy & illegal actions, I wouldn’t worry too much. The only way that accountability will occur is if the House and/or Senate changes hands this coming November, or when history looks back on their (mis)deeds and talks about how the political climate allowed it to occur unquestioned.
Then again, I’m feeling rather cynical today. Oh well! We all get to have “one of those daysâ€! ;-)
April 19th, 2006 at 11:45 am#4 – and so were many others working at Brewster Jennings. How about them? Even if they were never identified by Novak, people in the know, have a good idea who was a NOC, now, by their association with Plame.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:46 am#15 I think your side has been having “one of those days” for the past 6 years or so.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:49 am#12 nailed it.
The Republicans see the polls and decided to go with the gold standard of political cynicism. Look for them not to run on issues, because they can’t (the polls bear that out); look for attack, attack, attack against their opponents, on every level: personal, religious, economic, patriotic. And lies galore.
Nothing will be considered too low to maintain power.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:50 am#4 – She was still very much undercover at the point the Bush Cabal outted her. Or haven’t you been paying any attention to the facts (not the spin)?
Gore Vidal has pointed out that the republic has been lost. We are now empire.
Are y’all getting your $1,100/month security fear reduction and gas for your SUV benefits? That’s what it’s costing each and every one of us in the US to occupy Iraq.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:53 am#18,
I agree…the right has twisted our country into such a distorted mess, they cannot afford to give up the seats…the further they are backed in a corner the more vicious they will fight, if that doesn’t work, they have many pieces in place for a take over (one of the most essential pieces is the millitary -cough Rumsfeld cough-) I don’t expect many changes regardless of how much America needs them…they have waited too long, worked too hard to gain this power to throw it away over some technacalaties like laws, or human rights…the same disillusionment I felt in 2000 (my 2nd presidential election!) i continues on to some degree everyday since then (especially Nov 04 – that was a doozy)
April 19th, 2006 at 11:58 amOf course Karl keeps his clearance. He’s going to need all the top secret leaks he can get to save his boss’s ass in 2006.
April 19th, 2006 at 12:01 pm#17 – I agree. Being cynical comes with being the “minority” party.
I look forward to the Republicans becoming re-acquainted with “cynicism” again! ;-)
April 19th, 2006 at 12:04 pm#4 Isn’t it about the LYING? I remember that from somewhere. Now let me see…
April 19th, 2006 at 12:04 pmi wonder what karl & krew have come up with since they began spying on their opponents, I bet its juicy!
(nixon would be prouc)
April 19th, 2006 at 12:04 pmi wonder what karl & krew have come up with since they began spying on their opponents, I bet its juicy!
(nixon would be proud)
April 19th, 2006 at 12:04 pm#13 Get in shape, you have a lot of wiggling to do. And really, what a sad way to run the country, one wiggle at a time.
April 19th, 2006 at 12:05 pmfi ANYONE thinks bush is getting rid of or weakening Rove’s influence need only look at how bush remains steadfastly in dead-eye dick’s and rummy’s corners and look at all the fuck-ups they’ve committed. noooo…. there is something else afoot here. IMHO, rovey is still pulling the strings along with bush’s two other puppet masters – dick and don. scary scenario: he’s not involved in policy because its been such a success they’re handing it over to caretakers while Karl-with-a-K takes over Homeland Security and Operation Middle East Take-over
April 19th, 2006 at 12:11 pmRove the trairor is going to rescue the sinking ship from the coming tidal wave ?
Yeah right ! The dems should tie Rove & Bush around their opponents necks.
Rove is part of the GOP’S problem, no amount of spin can fix that.
April 19th, 2006 at 12:28 pmKARL is already at work! Immigration will be the next assault to split the country. Last election gay marriage. it’s so typical of the repugs to use racism as a way to divide and conquer. i hope this time people will wake up and just say ‘NO’. Please do not allow this form of racism in our democracy!!
April 19th, 2006 at 12:47 pmKarl Rove has to keep his security clearance in order to effectively call the shots for the campaign that is upcoming.
How else would he know when to raise the alert level?
By all rights he should lose his clearance, but he wont give it up, and Georgie Porgie will not strip him of it. Thus, he will be the only POLITICIAN in the WH to have a TOP SECRET clearance.
April 19th, 2006 at 12:49 pmThink maybe these could be Fitzmas preparations?
April 19th, 2006 at 1:04 pm#4 Squeegeboob, remember Whitewater? How many charges from the original WW investigation led to articles of impeachment? Scooter leaky still lied to investigators, PERJURY, is still Perjury.
April 19th, 2006 at 1:20 pm#29 i hope this time people will wake up and just say ‘NO’. Please do not allow this form of racism in our democracy!!
I agree, but it will take more than hope…it will take oposition & organization, which seems to be no where…i do not expect the dems to stand up one bit – as much as i wish they would – once again they are underestimating the rights greed and it will cost them in 06 & 08…sitting still is not advancing, if anything, its moving backwards
April 19th, 2006 at 1:23 pmRove’s gone, too! Check this out:
Our Fitzy, Who art a Badass,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy kingdom come by nailing scum
Who thought they were in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily Bushwacks,
and forgive them their trespasses,
EXACTLY as they forgive those that trespass against them (in other words, nail them to the flipping walls, please!).
For Thine is the law court,
April 19th, 2006 at 1:28 pmAnd the power,
And the subpoena power,
Forever and ever, Amen.
Rove is a flipping TRAITOR! If the Dems do not stand up and say it how it is then they deserve what the TRAITOR has in store for them.
April 19th, 2006 at 1:34 pm#33… well i cant give up hope! but i agree that heretofore the dems have been woeful. and yes i will be out there doing what I can. for sure here in Cali they have lost the hispanic vote but doesnt really matter since cali votes democratic. we have to focus on Texas and the south.
April 19th, 2006 at 1:39 pmi think between Katrina and immigration they have pretty much lost blacks and hispanics! but what are we to do when sunday mornings in church people are told here is your list of people to vote for, go forth and vote for these or you go to hell????
If you would look back in Carl Rove’s history during election seasons past, you will see that he ALWAYS steps aside his “work” during the beginning of the election season.
He has to be free to make mischief at the local level too you know.
This has nothing to do with his white house job. It has to do with his party needing
April 19th, 2006 at 1:43 pmhis dirty hand to win again.
need a canidate first….need some one who will speak up for the people…right now corporations and religions know who to vote for…but no one to represent the citizens…last election rove one by making it all about gay marriage and abortion, then one of the first acts passed made bankruptcy harder, one of the first things the wh did was have a closed door energy policy meeting with the heads of oil…who will stand up to this?
April 19th, 2006 at 1:43 pmIt’s all window dressing.
It serves two purposes;
1) It helps to take some heat off the WH and helps the GOTV with the base by saying “you know there must be major changes going on if Rove is being forced to change jobs”.
2) It frees Rove to reach the full rabid eunuch potential by the midterms, with no constraint.
April 19th, 2006 at 1:44 pm#38… I liked what Joe Biden had to say! and with his seniority on the Foreign Relations committee maybe he can repair some of the damage we have done to our standing in the world.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:04 pmEven though the current rumor is saying that Karl Rove is being removed from policy making, he won’t lose any power. Bush needs him. Rove was removed from George H.W. Bush’s presidential campaign for dirty tricks, but he keeps coming back for Republican scum across the nation.
In spite of Clinton’s Executive Order removing access to secret documents, it didn’t stop Senator Orrin Hatch from shouting out that “we know it was Bin Laden, behind the World Trade Center, and we know where he is because we’re tracking his satellite phone.” Rummy then publicly spanks Orrin’s butt in public, and Orrin has the spot light taken off of him for months, but he still has access to top secret information. He wasn’t removed from any of his committees so far as I know. Not that that “leak” wasn’t orchestrated to create a “reason” for bin Laden to escape. Orrin Hatch is a distant cousin of George W. Bush’s, and bin Laden is a “bidniz pahdnah” (business partner for those who don’t speak “Bush”. The bin Laden’s have been bankrolling the Bush’s for many decades through James Bath, Bush’s National Guard buddy who was written up along with Bush for refusing to follow the order of a superior officer and take a blood test in order to be allowed to continue flying. The blood tests were a new requirement that year, and would have detected the presence of cocaine in their blood. Bath funneled $50,000 from the bin Ladens to start Dubya’s failed “Arbusto” oil drilling company.
And George H.W. Bush is the only past president who still is being briefed by intelligence officials with top secret information regarding what is going on around the world, and is sharing that information with the Saudis for his share of the oil money. All that so that he can make sure that the Carlyle Group, for which he and his son Dubya are Directors, will continue to reap blood money for all the weapons we sell to despots around the globe. Where do you think bin Laden and Saddam got all their weapons in the first place? The bin Laden family, by the way were also partners in the Carlyle Group, and in fact, the Directors of the Carlyle Group, including George H.W. Bush, were meeting in Washington, D.C. on the morning of 9/11.
And if Dubya was indeed the person who authorized the leaking of classified information, ten days before it was declassified, then what happens to his access to top secret information?
Bush’s entire administration, and the Representatives and Senators in Congress who supported them to allow them to take over our government, along with those who bankrolled them, are TRAITORS. They should all be treated as such.

April 19th, 2006 at 5:54 pmSo the “blossom’s” off the Bush? Aren’t Bush and brain opposite ends of this political body? Or has Rove Bush doing handstands?
April 19th, 2006 at 6:17 pmIt’s kinda obvious that Rove needs to spend time on the legal defense he expects to have to mount. But I guess we’re not supposed to even remember that little inconvenient fact.
April 19th, 2006 at 7:24 pmKarl Rove must be forced out of the White House, but without him Bush cannot tie his own shoe laces or even think for himself! Rove is Dubya’s brain > a sick perverted one > lol.
April 19th, 2006 at 10:46 pm“[M]ishandled classified information”??? He has admitted that he talked about Plame (and other have confirmed it). Doesn’t matter if he wasn’t the first, or only one. The law doesn’t give you that free pass. His security clearance should have been yanked for just that.
And someone needs to ask Dubya to his face whether he’s going to “fire” the leakers like he said he would (which includes Rove, and probably Cheney, and maybe as many as a half dozen more).
Cheers,
April 19th, 2006 at 10:49 pmSqeegeebugfuckeroo,
The wiggling will be done at the end of a noose.
SINCE the CIA requested the investigation in the FIRST place, THEY must have AT THE TIME, considered her “undercover” and a NOC (No Official Cover) agent. This is evident prima facie by the request, actually they were required by law to ask the FBI to invesitgate the outing of someone whom they considered an undercover agent. So, even now the slimy bastard traitor you voted for, (notice how I do not claim he is the president or won the election) is trying to say he ‘declassified her” prior to revelaing her name…THE $64,000 question is: HOW COULD THE CIA HAVE STILL CONSIDERED HER UNDERCOVER IF HE SUPPOSEDLY DECLASSIFIED HER? Wouldn’t he have either:
1) Told them he is declassifying an undercover agent, and they better tell her, because whe has NO OFFICIAL COVER, and could get herself killed
or
2) Turned to the CIA when they requested the investigation and told them to take a hike, because he had declassified her already, so there is no basis for an investigation.
His DOJ’s agreement to investigate this is PROOF POSITIVE THAT THE WH HAS COMMITTEED A TREASONOUS ACT. Just who exactly is the point. And now it turns out, the precedent has been turned around in some many ways by all of the sychphants around him, that he has felt obligated to point out that HE IS THE TRAITOR.
OMFG!!!! HE admits he is the traitor!!!!!
DID YOU HEAR ME, YOUR FUCKING ASSWIPE IS THE TRAITOR!
“Give me liberty or give THEM death!”
April 20th, 2006 at 10:16 amIt will be the same after Bush pardons all of them plus his self. I wish it hadn`t took so long for case against them, now will be after the elections before the trial. They have did so much damage already. W aiting to see if Rove leaves white house .People are waking up to slow.
