Tim Russert revealed two very interesting pieces of information this morning on Don Imus regarding the future of Donald Rumsfeld and his standing in the Pentagon:
1. After Rep. Jack Murtha appeared on Meet the Press and advocated troop withdrawal several officials in the Pentagon called Russert to tell him “Murtha is right.”
2. A source “close to the President” told Russert that Bush “won’t fire Rumsfeld because it would be the equivalent of firing himself.”
Transcript:
IMUS: Is there anything going on with the Rumsfeld story that is – I mean, the President is pledging this support and all that, and that’s usually the kiss of death, but not always. But probably not with this guy. But what do you hear?
RUSSERT: Well, I knew something was happening when I had John Murtha on several months ago and he talked about his plan for a timetable. And I got several calls from people at the Pentagon and others and they said, “You know Murtha’s right.†And I was stunned because you don’t usually get those kinds of calls. They were obviously people who would not allow me to broadcast their names. And then it continued with General Zinni who came on “Meet the Press†and said that Secretary Rumsfeld should resign. So the last couple of weeks, as I talked to people, one former general said we have the equivalent of a civil war going on at the Pentagon. The generals are trying to reclaim control of the war because they do believe serious mistakes were made. That’s a very serious statement. And then, someone very close to the President said to me, you know, he won’t fire Rumsfeld because it would be the equivalent of firing himself. He can’t acknowledge that it was such a big mistake, in so many ways. And so Rumsfeld will stay. And that’s the decision that the President has made and I think Rumsfeld will stay and try to see this through.
Has Russert realized that the dark side is crumbling, so he is jumping ship and returning to the light side?
April 19th, 2006 at 2:18 pmheh heh, I found this on Rummy’s Rules…
http://www.opinionjournal.com/wsj/?id=85000505
funny he would even write this one down. it must have been as a reminder to him of the problems with our form of government. But, hey, why not a mikado of sorts?
Don’t begin to think you’re the president. You’re not. The Constitution provides for only one.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:19 pmAh, there are those voices again.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:20 pmBush “won’t fire Rumsfeld because it would be the equivalent of firing himself.â€
And the problem with that would be?
Sounds like a win-win situation, really.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:20 pmThis is why no “real” change is going to happen. It would amount to bringing in new “co-conspirators” into the fold. Much easier to get insiders to go along with the plan and subsequent cover up than convincing a new somebody to but into it.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:20 pmOh Bush is totally going to go bomb Iran now… He needs a diversion.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:23 pmYou know, this way we could kill two birds with one stone…
April 19th, 2006 at 2:25 pmGOOBER you should have never let Colin Powell go! now you are stuck with Rummy like a stone collar around your neck!!
April 19th, 2006 at 2:27 pmI’m absoultely in favor of Bush firing himself, unfortunately that is not within his realm of possible actions because he can not recognize incomeptance, therefore he can not fir himself for incompetance.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:28 pmCitizen80203 sad, but oh so f*&%ing true.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:28 pmTim Russert says only the news that serves him best.
Nothing more, nothing less.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:29 pmRUMSFELD: STILL BLAMING 9-11 ON SADDAM AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
DIGGING DEEPER [A BLOG]
By Ivan Goldman
Rumsfeld’s adherence to The Big Lie Tactic is, if nothing else, relentless. Here it is April of ‘06, and while recently necking with Rush on the Limbaugh show he was still trying to tie Saddam to the Nine-Eleven attacks. How many times does that bullshit have to be discredited? It’s like asking how many times do you have to give more Lebensraum to the Third Reich before it lets you alone? The numerical answer is the same — infinity. I’d quote from the interview, but I can’t bear to look at his words anymore. Trust me. I guarantee it’s a safer bet than trusting Rumsfeld.
In that same interview we learned from raging Rummy that anyone who wants him out of there is doing Bin Laden’s work. You know what? Even if he’d been a success, even if his cockamamie ideas proved true and we’d found all kinds of nukes and nerve gas in the palaces and a letter from Bin Laden thanking Saddam for all the help with the you know what, and even if we’d created a shining light of a democracy in Iraq with no muss or fuss and paid for it with Iraq’s own oil, and then Rummy were to make that remark linking dissent to treason — the man would have to go. But not only is this twisted geek not a success, the guy couldn’t put together a cold salad without burning down the entire neighborhood — and then denying anything went wrong.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:29 pmRussert: A Source “Close to the President†Told Me Bush “Won’t Fire Rumsfeld Because It Would Be The Equivalent Of Firing Himself.†- - - - Well, duuuuuh. You don’t need a “source” to come up with that conclusion. Anyone with a room temperature IQ saw that long ago.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:33 pmIf I correctly understand the call for Rumsfeld to resign, it comes after these generals have concluded that so long as Rumsfeld remains in his position, the war strategy cannot and will not be changed. At the same time, Rumsfeld is executing the plan the President favors. Hence, if these generals have concluded that the strategy won’t work and must change, then calling for Rumsfeld to resign is simply acknowledging the only avenue available whereby the changes they support can be implemented. However, Rumsfeld can only leave if or when the President is ready to change directions. Checkmate.
This administration’s myopic view seems to simply meet criticism of policy with a revised political strategy. These efforts are demonstrated by the numerous talking heads that are attempting to undermine the remarks of former generals critical of the Secretary of Defense’s handling of the war. Rushing to announce a briefing with a group of military strategists is more of the same. The longstanding objections to Rumsfeld are primarily focused on his intransigence. Gathering a group of chosen military consultants is akin to hiring cheerleaders. They make for good photo-ops, they attract attention, but they can’t salvage a victory if the team doesn’t know how to execute a winning game plan.
This behavior merely adds an exclamation mark to the assertion that the need to vindicate the ideological leanings of this administration repeatedly takes priority over the troubling realities on the ground. The dangers of an administration of ideologues is that they are inclined to see all criticism as nothing more than an ideological push-back motivated by political considerations. There is an obvious irony to this situation. While the criticism is likely not about ideology, the consequences of interpreting it as so have implications far greater than political advantage. Perhaps it’s nothing more than the boy that cried wolf, when initiating this war, being unable to accept that others may be speaking words that are both sincere and factual. Regardless, reality trudges forward in this mire we call Iraq.

April 19th, 2006 at 2:33 pmJudd, when are you going to stop quoting the right-wing media? I mean, are you some kinda fascist?
April 19th, 2006 at 2:36 pm[…] In a later post at Think Progress we learn from Russert: A Source “Close to the President†Told Me Bush “Won’t Fire Rumsfeld Because It Would Be The Equivalent Of Firing Himself.†[…]
April 19th, 2006 at 2:39 pmSo why does he not call for impeachment ? He certainly was quick to do do it for Clinton . For Russert sex is cardinal sex , not the wanton unnessary killings .
April 19th, 2006 at 2:41 pmYou talk of misplaced values . Probably thought in some religious schools.

Wow now it’s throwing rocks at fowl, I thought you had animal rights/environmental values :)
April 19th, 2006 at 2:43 pmPerhaps it is time for the Republican Senators to visit Mr. Bush and suggest that he retire. after all, he does need to spend more time with his wife and daughters and this President thing has been a terrible strain.
Seriously, for the good of the country, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Cheney all need to resign to stop the agony. Bush will be regarded by history much better if he resigns now than if he is either forced out or continues the expand on the disaster he has already created. Only by resigning can he avoid a permanent title of Worst Ever!
The Republican Senators should confer and decide who should be the new Vice Presicent for Bush to appoint. There must be some politician somewhere that deserves broad respect, though I am not sure at this point. Then the resignations should begin. First Cheney. Then after the new Vice President is confirmed, Bush followed by Gonzales, and finally Rumsfeld.
Nothing less will spare this country from the upcoming disaster of having to deal with a totally impotent, incompetent, and out-of-control Bush for the remainder of his term.
It is all necessary for the good of the country.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:43 pmWow now it’s throwing rocks at fowl, I thought you had animal rights/environmental values :)

Yes, I suppose Bush and Rumfeld both qualify as “fowl’, though I prefer tp spell it ‘foul’ :)
April 19th, 2006 at 2:45 pmIt true….Look at bushco’s prevailing patterns. If a policy isn’t working and becomes politically (wildly) unpopular, bushco has without fail, killed a sacrificial goat and blamed the goat.
Bushies have always roared with approval of this tactic and have always agreed that the goat had to go & deserved what it got.
Firing Rummy is too close to home. Hell, I doubt they’d LET Rummy quit.
Damn goats.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:45 pmAs far as I am concerned Bush should be impeached on sex charges. Clinton orally copulated with one plump former intern. Bush as repeatedly sodomized every one in a nation of 300 million.

The Republican Senators should confer and decide who should be the new Vice Presicent for Bush to appoint.
Ummmmm, wouldn’t that be much worse? I mean now you are taking away the people choosing who is president and giving that right to a specific party’s senators. Personally I would rather keep things as they are than start letting senators decide the president of the United States.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:47 pmYea! One of them finally admitted that the media is right wing biased.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:49 pmThe Seante chose Bush for President in 2000 when they did not sign on to the black House Reps’ legislation to investigate the voter fraud. Both sides, democrats and republicans. Both are to blame for the crap we are in right now.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:52 pmIt’s one thing to be objective, another to flipflop. Russert is a flopper. Well, get ready for the “Swiftboaters,” they are coming after you, my friend.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:52 pm#23 - We had nine people decide who would be President in 2000, why not 55 people decide who should be Vice President? (My pardon, I couldn’t resist the jab!)
I recall when (VPres.) Cheney was tasked by (then Gov.) Bush to decide who had the best qualifications to be his running mate. I don’t think anyone was surprised when he chose himself. The word “hubris” comes to mind.
April 19th, 2006 at 2:57 pmTundra wrote, “Ummmmm, wouldn’t that be much worse? I mean now you are taking away the people choosing who is president and giving that right to a specific party’s senators.”
As with Nixon, retirement is necessary. Amendments XX and XXV provide for succession. We are not like a parliamentary system wherein a lost vote of confidence results in a new election. If we impeached Bush, we would get Cheney who is probably worse than Bush. Under Amendment XXV, the new Vice President must pass by a majority of both houses. If Bush resigns in 2006, it will be a Republican House. If he resigns in 2007, perhaps it may be a Democratic House. In either case, the People will have their input through their Congress Persons. I guess we have what we deserve as far as Congress goes. We elected them.
This is an orderly process and it needs to happen. We can vote again and elect a President in 2008.
Not good, but better than what we have.

You nailed it.
If Bush can’t fire Rumsfeld because it would be like firing himself, it sounds like Bush must be as culpable as Cheney and Rumsfeld for, Iraq, the torture rooms, losing Osama bin Laden, and any plans to bomb, even nuke Iran.
Since Bush was elected, there has been some debate about whether he was merely a puppet Prez who was lied to and manipulated by Cheney, or whether Bush was completely aware and complicit in all of BushCo’s actions.
I think this shows that the later theory is the correct one. Wouldn’t an innocent dupe fire, Rummy, once he understood that he’d been had? By the most objective standards, Rummy has been a disaster as Sect’y of Defense. The only logical reason to keep him on is that Rummy will do anything Bush asks him to, including nuke Iran. I think it’s fair to say that Bush would have a hard time replacing him.

Ok, we have identified a cause. is the solution giving up our right to choose our representatives?
Bush sucks, ok fair enough. Letting the government decide who should be in charge of me is even worse. That is like welcoming/asking for facism.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:08 pmPoor Rumsfeld~~
~~~~He had a Pentagon memo sent out defending him ~~ saying there are 8000 retired or fired ~~ generals and military personnel who DID NOT call for his ouster ~~:) Also he brought out Richard B. Myers~~ a lacklustre yes-man who stayed in the position since 2001 until last year ~~ exactly because he knew how to fawn cocky Rummy~~
~~It seems so childish to have this type of reaction ~~ In addition, from the 8000 or so ~~ God knows how many of them actually agree with the calls for the ouster ~~ just because they haven’t spoken up does not imply they support Rumsfeld ~~
~~~This is a sad state of affairs ~~ A civilian, a politcian who refuses to leave although he is damaging morale of the troops ~~ A disinterested Commader in Chief ~~ the whole chain of Command is in disarray ~~ a lot of unhappy faces ~~ civilians making key military decisions~~
~~and we’re expected to win this war??~~

Of course Bush is culpable. He just plays stupid. Most of this travesty is his idea. It will probably turn out in the end that he was a subscriber to the daily torture reports and personally approved and understood the techniques.

April 19th, 2006 at 3:16 pmunbelievable - I have tried to ignore you but since I am posting around a bit before doing something meaningful, I will give you the time of day. I know you’re not lucky with ladies and you are here hating on me because of it.
I’m a woman you idiot. A smart and attractive woman who hates stupid bimbos because they lower our collective value. You are the proverbial bad apple.
I am not to blame for your lack of character or your poor looks.
You have to think that to compensate for the fact that I’m smarter than you. Unfortunatley for you, I’m also better looking.
You come across as a frustrated little man with nothing going for you, except this little blog.
Considering you can’t even get my gender straight after I already told you repeatedly prior, I’m not inclined to put much stock in anything else you ‘think’ (and I use the term loosely).
I recommend you stay here because you always say “weâ€, so it seems you feel accepted here as part of a group.
It’s a female trait to say we since we are inclusive and tend to be unilateral, not hierarchical. But, since you never research anything, other than yourself, you wouldn’t know anything about women. I’m wondering if you actually are one. Or another pathetic drag queen who can’t afford to have his winkie removed.
To me you’re an embarrassing nobody and so whatever you say here doesn’t matter to me.
The fact that you responded suggests otherwise. And the fact that you responded this much shows that it matters a lot.
However, I do feel sorry for you so I gave you something long to read. Did you enjoy it?
No. You are a twit. I’d rather read Rush Limbaugh

That’s what we have with Bush already. There might be some hope that Congress can choose an interim leader who is good. At least they are subject to some local pressure to keep their offices.
If not, then our Republic is probably just finished.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:17 pmThe thought of Republican Senators making Bush and Cheney an offer that they can not refuse, is the sort of thing I would expect to hear from the Kool-Ade crowd. Off hand, I can not think of a single Republican Senator who would put the country’s interests ahead of his or her personal interests and absent a sea shift in November, Republicans will not figure out that their self interest and the country’s interest may be one and the same. Dumbya’s poll numbers would have to hit the low teens or upper single digits before those nitwits figure out what 60+% of the country are thinking. Still and all, if Dumbya keeps his perfect record of incompetence going we may yet see that day. So you know I am nonpartisan, Feingold is probably the only Democratic Senator who might put the country’s interests ahead of his or her own and there is a school of thought that even he does not qualify.

Intelligence and decency. Two things you’ll never possess XXLisa.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:17 pmThe reason Rummy won’t resign is that his ego is bullet proof. He thinks he’s doing a swell job, and Bush obviously needs him.
When you think of all the laws broken, the NSA sweeps, outing a CIA agent, secret torture rooms, lying to the American people in order to invade Iraq, and who knows what else, it would be close to impossible for Bush to fire Rummy. He knows where all the bodies are buried and he is apparently, Bush’s soul mate.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:18 pmThe Bush legacy can be visualised as a rabbit turd that begins rolling down a mountain made of crap.

April 19th, 2006 at 3:20 pmThe amazing control Rummy has over the White House is evident in our atitude toward Iran. Rummy is itchin for another war, because he mistakenly believes this one is over.
My belief is that this war has already made all the quick profit it can for defense contractors, now they need another boost to the bottom line. A nuclear war would really reinvigorate their profits. Unfortunately these idiots will have no country left to sell stuff to after this one, but boy what a great quarterly report they will have.

If it weren’t for anonymity the Left Wing Ratbastards wouldn’t have any sources. Why is that? We haven’t hung anyone for lying in years.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:21 pmJWP - I agree. I have never bought into the argument that Bush was duped, he’s too sociopathic not be along for the ride.
Anyone who would hang out with Karl Rove for 20 years has to be as anti-social as he is. The idea that Bush is a Compassionate Conservative is the biggest laugh of them all.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:25 pmThe real underlying truth about the war is the supporters of the war have defended the Administration for it’s intent but when the outcome, which even up to this point has not been influenced in any way by it’s opponents, they have run out of people to blame. And now that the monkey is trying to put the cork back in the elephant’s ass he is looking for someone to blame, whether it’s the media or retired generals. The supporters are desperate, plain and simple. It’s their President and theirCongress and only they are to blame. Quick better run off and wreck another country.

Terry, sadly, you may be right. There may be no hope even if Bush’s polls fall to zero. If they do, he will be really, really dangerous. I just hope every day that some group of Senator’s and Representatives on both sides of the aisle will show some profile of courage and try to get Bush out.
Everyday, my hopes have been dashed. I worry greatly for my children.
Sometimes I wonder if the Senate is comprised of the hundred most stupid and selfish humans in the world?
April 19th, 2006 at 3:26 pm#36 Anvilhead doesn’t speak for most American. The war in Iraq was an unjust war. They only went into Iraq for the OIL and to make Old Bushie buddies richer. I knew it was too much to expect you to stop with the “ratbastard” references. What is it with you? Was it your upbringing that makes you like the term “bastard” or is it the personal qualities of most Republicans that makes you like the term “rat”?
Oh well, I guess “free speech” means we have to put up with ratbastardfascistRepubliscumtards such as you, “Right between the I’s”.
By the way, wasn’t it a supposed “anonymous” source for the leaking of undercover NOC Plame, until Libby rolled on his old boss? I guess the Right Wing ratbastardfascistRepubliscumtards have to have some source for their calumny and mendacity.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:29 pmIf firing Runsfeld is the equivalent of Pres. Bush firing himself, or so we learn from Russert, then it becomes clear that what the Generals are saying is that they want George Bush to go away but are unable to say so clearly because they are not allowed by tradition to critizise a sitting president in the middle of a war. I think they must know that some very scary things are in store for Americans if the Bush, Cheney, Runsfeld triunvirate is allowed to fulfill its plans for the future of our coutry!

I retract that statement after reading this thread. Back to the good old days, of last week I see. If we can’t ‘reach across the aisle’ how do you expect our representatives too.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:33 pm#50. Perhaps it’s because anyone who comes forward gets their character dragged through the mud with lies piled upon lies. For example, Bush commits acts of treason just to out undercover CIA agents in order to exact personal revenge on those who expose his lies. Or, we can look at what happened to a Vietnam hero, John Kerry. “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” my a$$.

I’m sure that’s right. You could see the anguish on the general’s faces, the sense that they knew so much more than they felt they could tell. Coupled with Sy Hersh’s piece in which military sources figure heavily, it looks like we’re in deep trouble.
Despite the denials, I’m guessing we’ll be bombing Iran, if not this year, before Bush leaves office.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:37 pmJWP
That’s what we have with Bush already. There might be some hope that Congress can choose an interim leader who is good. At least they are subject to some local pressure to keep their offices.
We will have to disagree on this one (I’m a libertarian so we won’t agree on it :) Sadly we made this bed we have to lie in it, unless they impeach him (which I can see this being common talk for every president from here on out. There will be a decent size minority screaming for it all the time now) I think it’s really a bad precedent to start and will just start the eroding of our rights.
Be nice to bimbos, with out them Tundra would be on a 10 year dry spell.
Hey I’ve only moved to bimbos in the last year and a half, it’s just less work :)
Besides I am just sitting back and watching the cat fight (Wish I could have a beer in my hand at the same time)
April 19th, 2006 at 3:40 pm#60 - I agree. It’s sad how “Right between the I’s” can bring a post down and get me to respond to his name-calling with only one attribution.
Then again, if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, he should be quite flattered in how quickly he’s gotten me to lower myself to his base level.
I believe that I’m quite civil to most of the conservative posters. It’s the ultra-radical neo-conservatives that encourage me to respond at the same low-level of conversation that they adopt right off the bat.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:40 pm#62 Let’s hope this does not happen. The Dems need to take both houses back in November and impeach Old Bushie and Cheney. Our America will not last another two years of Old Bushie and the Republican party. This is very scary.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:44 pm#64 “It’s the ultra-radical neo-conservatives that encourage me to respond at the same low-level of conversation that they adopt right off the bat.”
Hopefully its not the ultra-radical neo-conservatives, but rather the format that some people tend to use. Some of you guys debate me and it’s all sorts of fun, others are just plain insulting, and those are the ones I have a hard time not sinking to the same level as, but the insulting ones, as well as the nice ones go from being close to the center, all the way to the DU side of the spectrum.
But what else would I expect from a bunch of dirty hippies. :)
April 19th, 2006 at 3:45 pm#62 As Bush’s numbers plummet and as he sees he can thumb his nose at Congress becasue it is afraid of him, and as he packs the courts, Bush gets freer. He knows that the individual citizens can gripe on the blogs, but that the People have no power over him. After all, his power grows as his polls drop. The question is whether Bush will leave or cock-up some fright that stops the 2009 elections. Certainly his Supreme Court would rule that he could stay until a successor was “duly elected.” He really has the power. We should all be very aftraid.
I wonder how some of the right-wingers will respond if their leader really takes on the title of Dear Leader?

Tell me anvilhead are you active military? do you know any active military? do you plan to join this war you seem so fond of?
I have two friends who have returned form active duty in Iraq, and one who is over there now. I have seen the toll on the wives and families of the men who have gone. What are you Anvil? a typical punk coward is my guess.

April 19th, 2006 at 3:51 pm#66 - Hey! I take a bath every week if I need one or not! ;-)
Now THAT is an example of “witty repartee” that I enjoy on this site. Then again, I have never heard you (well, “read you” to be correct) refer to me or my political leanings as “ratbastardfucktard”. I guess it’s the potty mouth immature rants of the improperly behaved that fires me up.
“I guess that “Right between the I’s” should slap his mother in the face for not raising him correctly. I would caution him to make sure she’s not orally servicing an illegal immigrant when he slaps her face, because that would not be good manners.”
Now THAT is an example of how not to refer to people and remain civil.
“Right between the I’s”, I was only using your mother as an object lesson. I apologize if I’ve upset you for the reference.
April 19th, 2006 at 3:53 pm# 67. I think you’re right that the more unpopular Bush becomes, the less he has to lose by doing something really awful, like attacking Iran.
I’m not sure about your theory that Bush would be able override the 2008 elections, though I have no doubt he would do so if he could. But i can envision him starting WWIII, just before he leaves office, knowing that the next guy, probably a Dem, will have all of the responsibility for dealing with the blowback.

April 19th, 2006 at 3:58 pm#74 Just suppose there is a 9/11 type of attack on October 15 or even a Hurricane hitting, say washington, DC. There is a huge disruption of the ability to have operating polling. Buch goes to Court and says its unfair to have a vote until everyone can get to the polls. In the current situation, umpteen million cannot get their votes in. The Court looks at Bush v. Gore that was decided upon an equal protection argument and says, by George, you are right. We will just postpone the elections. Then things remain stirred up and no election is ever had.
What would happen. Probably nothing. Would I-Right-I get his gun and fight to have elections again?
April 19th, 2006 at 4:00 pmI agreed with Comment #19. The whole damn bunch should resign and, since we’re having a national election this Fall, we should also have a special Presidential election. After Bush stole the last two, maybe one special election could give us a new start. Decades of fumigation are needed after this horrendous mess Bush and cronies have made for our country and our world. It can’t begin soon enough!

I guess Lawerence Tribe would have to argue before the Supreme Court, that postponing the elections was proposed in Iraq too, but the Bush Administration wisely insisted that they be held on the scheduled date.
Not that BushCo wouldn’t do whatever they could to postpone the enevitable. It’s just that to assume that this country will offically become a dictatorship is too depressing to imagine.

April 19th, 2006 at 4:29 pm#67 congress is not afraid of Bush it is in league with him. Congress does not stand up to him because they don’t want to stand up to him due to near total agreement on how to ruin, oops, I mean run the country.
As to canceling the election due to terrorism, hurricane etc… Bush does not need an excuse, remember he can do anything he wants in fighting the war on terror. If it looks like Dems might take back house or senate or both you can be damned sure that there will be arguments made about continuity of leadership to fight the war etc… and that will be a major excuse to either suspend elections, cancel them, or refusal to seat the newly elected congress.
April 19th, 2006 at 4:30 pmThe next election will be about accountability and fear. The left will fear the government currently in control and the right will be concerned in theory only about the accountability part and stick with fear. Fear wins every time. The fear of gays, women who want abortions, and terror. It’s like a war on shit, it will always be there and floats to the top. Power is the crack pipe for the GOP and they can’t put it down and they will do anything to get more and keep their stash to themselves.
April 19th, 2006 at 4:31 pm#77 Although I do not dispute the possibility that your scenario could happen, think about this:
A) Even though the latest polls show the electorate preferring Democratic candidates over Republicans, that in itself is no guarantee that it will be reflected in the mid-term election results. The way the system is structured there are other variables (gerrymandering, e-vote fixing, etc) that can make a predetermined result happen.
B) If you were dishonest and had mastered the technique for stealing elections without getting caught, would you change your method? I don’t think so. Anyway, we’ll find out next November!

April 19th, 2006 at 4:42 pmRe: Power is the crack pipe for the GOP and they can’t put it down.
Great line. Still, it doesn’t plausable that Bush will be able to suspend elections, unless there is a major terrorist attack a day or two before the 2006 elections. Since the terrorists seem to get that another attack on American soil only strengthens Bush, it’s unlikely they would do so.
For BushCo to do it themselves would take a conspiracy far beyond a few kool-aid drinkers in Pentagon. While I agree that Bush would probably like to do it, it’s a pretty complicated and risky thing.
In way one might think that even Bush would be tired of it all. He’s definately lost that swaggering, smug, bravado he had when he was first elected. He seems rather dark and depressed these days, as opposed to the happy, carefree, bully he was 3 years ago. Sort of like Hitler, post the battle of Stalingrad.

April 19th, 2006 at 4:49 pmThis is the most accurate observation, but I have to qualify it: My take is that GBW CANNOT fire Goering, oops, I mean Rummy, because they had a blood pact and if he was fired, disgruntled Rummy would divulge all the dirt, you know, little things like how GBW orchestrated and engineered 9/11. Does anyone remember way way back when our president sat for 20 minutes in a classroom reading “My Pet Goat” after being told that the World Trade Center had been hit by a second plane? That was because he knew about it BEFORE it happened. Everything else makes sense too, including how the manufactured “war” on terror now allows him to do anything he likes. No Congress. Arrowhead, so, you don’t like monarchs for US here in the U.S., but you wholly approve of Dictatorships abroad controlled by US. Thus, being a “hyperpower” lets you justify theft of another nation’s wealth. Libertarian at home–Authoritarian Abroad. Is that what you really believe?
April 19th, 2006 at 5:19 pmOf course Murtha is right, the U.S. should withdraw the troops from Iraq and as soon as possible since this war was based all along on lies. It is the presence of the U.S. in Iraq that is causing the insurgency to constantly erupt. It is also rather hypocritical of these generals to criticize Rumsfeld and at the same time to make sure that the word withdrawal never passes their lips. One wonders how many Americans have to be killed- 10,000, 58,000, 10,000?- before they will consider that no more Americans should have to be blown up and maimed and wounded and crippled in that abbatoir known as Iraq.

There seems little doubt that there is a dial-a-vote control over the voting machines that are in the control of someone who is not a Democrat and that the November election will be stolen.
The question is whether Bush love being President so much that he will not surrender power. In any case, the voters no longer have their votes counted fairly unless something drastic happens between now and November such as a whistle-blower coming forward and explaining how the votes are fixed, the Republicans will win again.

April 19th, 2006 at 5:27 pmNo Kenny Bush is not evil, he is just not interested in the details of how to get things done. The details of , say, selectively declassifying documents, feeding major newspapers bogus information, the details about what to do with a country after he invaded it, what to do during a major Natioanl disaster. He’s not evil he’s just plain incompetent. Now his PR machine was better than the Democrats , even though it might have been a little dishonest, but you are right he was elected, at least once. You are right about that. The only plot is straight out of the PNAC manual, he is a simple man and he likes simple plans. He doesn’t bother with the details that’s all. April 19th, 2006 at 5:40 pm#139 - Good post, I agree with some of what you say. It seems pretty clear Bush is incurious and mentally lazy, but I don’t think that means he isn’t evil. Remember, the story about when George Bush was Gov of Texas, he loved to mock the woman (I’ve forgotten her name) who was due to be excuted and pleaded for clemency. He is evil, alright.
The author M. Scott Peck writes in his book, The Road Less Travelled about the evil of the lie. There is no bigger liar in the country, no man who purposely lies in ordr to go to war, to torture, to steal elections, give to the rich and steal from the poor the way Bush does. By buying into the meme that poor Georgie just isn’t as smart as the other boys, lets him off the hook.
His very closeness to Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld ought to tell us everything we need to know about Bush; that he’s a sociopathic, neurotic, and narcisistic man who has no conscience and he will always put his own interests ahead of the country’s.
April 19th, 2006 at 5:42 pmSquegee - Yea we saw the Mckinney report. Didn’t you see the McKinney apology? It was a week ago or more.
On your earlier post - no, I don’t like everything you say &/or think, but you don’t get on my last nerve much.
April 19th, 2006 at 5:46 pmBefore the U.S. invaded Iraq, their were at most a few thousand folks spread around the globe who hated us. Now, after Bush, Cheney, Rummy and the rest have done their dirt work, we’ve made blood enemies out of millions upon millions. The numbers of our enemies, under this administration, have increased as much or more as our national debt. China, Russia, Iran, for God’s sake, has profited by the Bushies idiocy - surely not the middle-class American worker.I simply cannot understand anyone of anywhere near normal intellegnce, who is not in the higher reaches of the oil industry, or super rich, of a religious nut, who could back our present government.

if you two ever get down to SoCal let me know I would like to meet up and have a drink with you two
Heck I’m going to Georgia :)
I don’t think I could travel with Squegeeboo that long, as annoying as he is on here, he’s worse in person. (Notice no smiley face)
Not sure if you would want to have a drink with a commie leftist hippie like me though.
April 19th, 2006 at 5:52 pmIt’s amazing how the mention of the word drink can get past such things :)
Here’s the info on Karla Faye Tucker, the first woman to be executed in Texas in over a hundred years, and George Bush.
…
President George W. Bush Publicly Mocked Karla’s Clemency Plea
In early August 1999, then Presidential candidate Governor George W. Bush mocked Karla Tucker’s plea for clemency during an interview with Talk Magazine. Bush mentioned that he had watched Larry King’s interview with Karla Tucker from Texas Death Row.
“I didn’t meet with Larry King either when he came down for it,” Bush told the magazine. “I watched his interview with (Tucker), though. He asked her real difficult questions, like, `What would you say to Governor Bush?’ ”
The Talk reporter asked how she answered.
” `Please,’ Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, `don’t kill me,’ ” according to the magazine.
Here’s the relevant clip of the interview from the September 1999 issue of Talk Magazine.
GOP Presidental Primary Opponent Gary Bauer critisized Bush for these comments.
“I think it is nothing short of unbelievable that the governor of a major state running for president thought it was acceptable to mock a woman he decided to put to death,” Bauer said of Bush.

April 19th, 2006 at 5:56 pmI think that would be okay with a lot of people. Actually it sounds a little schizo, but we already knew that.
Dave Letterman does a segment, “Great Speeches in History”. It ends, showing our babbling President.
April 19th, 2006 at 5:58 pm#15 - “Judd, when are you going to stop quoting the right-wing media? I mean, are you some kinda fascist? - Comment by Seixon
*****Excellent point, Seixon!! (I can almost feel the love!) TP could provide a truly valuable service for the usual suspects if they would analyze the Nation, and other “geniuses” like Mother Jones, the Washington Spectator, Bob Herbert, Maureen Dowdy, etc. But come to think of it, if TP didn’t critique Fox or MSNBC to a lesser degree, this whole place would collapse like a house of cards.
#27 - “We had nine people decide who would be President in 2000, why not 55 people decide who should be Vice President?” Comment by Dim Soldier
****** Wrong again, Dim. EVERY re-count of Florida (even liberal northeastern papers, Dimmy) showed Bush won Florida. Choke on it…..
Has that vulgar, pitiful little RyANNe been bounced AGAIN?? What a shame….
April 19th, 2006 at 6:01 pmUnbelievable “Do you live in New York too? I’m supposed to visit my friend in Long Island this summer.”
