Russert: A Source “Close to the President” Told Me Bush “Won’t Fire Rumsfeld Because It Would Be The Equivalent Of Firing Himself.”

Tim Russert revealed two very interesting pieces of information this morning on Don Imus regarding the future of Donald Rumsfeld and his standing in the Pentagon:

1. After Rep. Jack Murtha appeared on Meet the Press and advocated troop withdrawal several officials in the Pentagon called Russert to tell him “Murtha is right.”

2. A source “close to the President” told Russert that Bush “won’t fire Rumsfeld because it would be the equivalent of firing himself.”

Watch it:

Transcript:

IMUS: Is there anything going on with the Rumsfeld story that is – I mean, the President is pledging this support and all that, and that’s usually the kiss of death, but not always. But probably not with this guy. But what do you hear?

RUSSERT: Well, I knew something was happening when I had John Murtha on several months ago and he talked about his plan for a timetable. And I got several calls from people at the Pentagon and others and they said, “You know Murtha’s right.” And I was stunned because you don’t usually get those kinds of calls. They were obviously people who would not allow me to broadcast their names. And then it continued with General Zinni who came on “Meet the Press” and said that Secretary Rumsfeld should resign. So the last couple of weeks, as I talked to people, one former general said we have the equivalent of a civil war going on at the Pentagon. The generals are trying to reclaim control of the war because they do believe serious mistakes were made. That’s a very serious statement. And then, someone very close to the President said to me, you know, he won’t fire Rumsfeld because it would be the equivalent of firing himself. He can’t acknowledge that it was such a big mistake, in so many ways. And so Rumsfeld will stay. And that’s the decision that the President has made and I think Rumsfeld will stay and try to see this through.

funny he would even write this one down. it must have been as a reminder to him of the problems with our form of government. But, hey, why not a mikado of sorts?

Don’t begin to think you’re the president. You’re not. The Constitution provides for only one.

This is why no “real” change is going to happen. It would amount to bringing in new “co-conspirators” into the fold. Much easier to get insiders to go along with the plan and subsequent cover up than convincing a new somebody to but into it.

RUMSFELD: STILL BLAMING 9-11 ON SADDAM AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
    DIGGING DEEPER [A BLOG]
    By Ivan Goldman
Rumsfeld’s adherence to The Big Lie Tactic is, if nothing else, relentless. Here it is April of ‘06, and while recently necking with Rush on the Limbaugh show he was still trying to tie Saddam to the Nine-Eleven attacks. How many times does that bullshit have to be discredited? It’s like asking how many times do you have to give more Lebensraum to the Third Reich before it lets you alone? The numerical answer is the same — infinity. I’d quote from the interview, but I can’t bear to look at his words anymore. Trust me. I guarantee it’s a safer bet than trusting Rumsfeld.

In that same interview we learned from raging Rummy that anyone who wants him out of there is doing Bin Laden’s work. You know what? Even if he’d been a success, even if his cockamamie ideas proved true and we’d found all kinds of nukes and nerve gas in the palaces and a letter from Bin Laden thanking Saddam for all the help with the you know what, and even if we’d created a shining light of a democracy in Iraq with no muss or fuss and paid for it with Iraq’s own oil, and then Rummy were to make that remark linking dissent to treason — the man would have to go. But not only is this twisted geek not a success, the guy couldn’t put together a cold salad without burning down the entire neighborhood — and then denying anything went wrong.

Russert: A Source “Close to the President” Told Me Bush “Won’t Fire Rumsfeld Because It Would Be The Equivalent Of Firing Himself.” – - – - Well, duuuuuh. You don’t need a “source” to come up with that conclusion. Anyone with a room temperature IQ saw that long ago.

  14. Daniel DiRito says:

If I correctly understand the call for Rumsfeld to resign, it comes after these generals have concluded that so long as Rumsfeld remains in his position, the war strategy cannot and will not be changed. At the same time, Rumsfeld is executing the plan the President favors. Hence, if these generals have concluded that the strategy won’t work and must change, then calling for Rumsfeld to resign is simply acknowledging the only avenue available whereby the changes they support can be implemented. However, Rumsfeld can only leave if or when the President is ready to change directions. Checkmate.

This administration’s myopic view seems to simply meet criticism of policy with a revised political strategy. These efforts are demonstrated by the numerous talking heads that are attempting to undermine the remarks of former generals critical of the Secretary of Defense’s handling of the war. Rushing to announce a briefing with a group of military strategists is more of the same. The longstanding objections to Rumsfeld are primarily focused on his intransigence. Gathering a group of chosen military consultants is akin to hiring cheerleaders. They make for good photo-ops, they attract attention, but they can’t salvage a victory if the team doesn’t know how to execute a winning game plan.

This behavior merely adds an exclamation mark to the assertion that the need to vindicate the ideological leanings of this administration repeatedly takes priority over the troubling realities on the ground. The dangers of an administration of ideologues is that they are inclined to see all criticism as nothing more than an ideological push-back motivated by political considerations. There is an obvious irony to this situation. While the criticism is likely not about ideology, the consequences of interpreting it as so have implications far greater than political advantage. Perhaps it’s nothing more than the boy that cried wolf, when initiating this war, being unable to accept that others may be speaking words that are both sincere and factual. Regardless, reality trudges forward in this mire we call Iraq.

Perhaps it is time for the Republican Senators to visit Mr. Bush and suggest that he retire. after all, he does need to spend more time with his wife and daughters and this President thing has been a terrible strain.

Seriously, for the good of the country, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Cheney all need to resign to stop the agony. Bush will be regarded by history much better if he resigns now than if he is either forced out or continues the expand on the disaster he has already created. Only by resigning can he avoid a permanent title of Worst Ever!

The Republican Senators should confer and decide who should be the new Vice Presicent for Bush to appoint. There must be some politician somewhere that deserves broad respect, though I am not sure at this point. Then the resignations should begin. First Cheney. Then after the new Vice President is confirmed, Bush followed by Gonzales, and finally Rumsfeld.

Nothing less will spare this country from the upcoming disaster of having to deal with a totally impotent, incompetent, and out-of-control Bush for the remainder of his term.

It is all necessary for the good of the country.

Ummmmm, wouldn’t that be much worse? I mean now you are taking away the people choosing who is president and giving that right to a specific party’s senators. Personally I would rather keep things as they are than start letting senators decide the president of the United States.

Tundra wrote, “Ummmmm, wouldn’t that be much worse? I mean now you are taking away the people choosing who is president and giving that right to a specific party’s senators.”

As with Nixon, retirement is necessary. Amendments XX and XXV provide for succession. We are not like a parliamentary system wherein a lost vote of confidence results in a new election. If we impeached Bush, we would get Cheney who is probably worse than Bush. Under Amendment XXV, the new Vice President must pass by a majority of both houses. If Bush resigns in 2006, it will be a Republican House. If he resigns in 2007, perhaps it may be a Democratic House. In either case, the People will have their input through their Congress Persons. I guess we have what we deserve as far as Congress goes. We elected them.

This is an orderly process and it needs to happen. We can vote again and elect a President in 2008.

Not good, but better than what we have.

    You nailed it.

If Bush can’t fire Rumsfeld because it would be like firing himself, it sounds like Bush must be as culpable as Cheney and Rumsfeld for, Iraq, the torture rooms, losing Osama bin Laden, and any plans to bomb, even nuke Iran.

Since Bush was elected, there has been some debate about whether he was merely a puppet Prez who was lied to and manipulated by Cheney, or whether Bush was completely aware and complicit in all of BushCo’s actions.

I think this shows that the later theory is the correct one. Wouldn’t an innocent dupe fire, Rummy, once he understood that he’d been had? By the most objective standards, Rummy has been a disaster as Sect’y of Defense. The only logical reason to keep him on is that Rummy will do anything Bush asks him to, including nuke Iran. I think it’s fair to say that Bush would have a hard time replacing him.

If not, then our Republic is probably just finished.

  39. Terry says:

The thought of Republican Senators making Bush and Cheney an offer that they can not refuse, is the sort of thing I would expect to hear from the Kool-Ade crowd. Off hand, I can not think of a single Republican Senator who would put the country’s interests ahead of his or her personal interests and absent a sea shift in November, Republicans will not figure out that their self interest and the country’s interest may be one and the same. Dumbya’s poll numbers would have to hit the low teens or upper single digits before those nitwits figure out what 60+% of the country are thinking. Still and all, if Dumbya keeps his perfect record of incompetence going we may yet see that day. So you know I am nonpartisan, Feingold is probably the only Democratic Senator who might put the country’s interests ahead of his or her own and there is a school of thought that even he does not qualify.

I’m sure that’s right. You could see the anguish on the general’s faces, the sense that they knew so much more than they felt they could tell. Coupled with Sy Hersh’s piece in which military sources figure heavily, it looks like we’re in deep trouble.

Despite the denials, I’m guessing we’ll be bombing Iran, if not this year, before Bush leaves office.

Some of you guys debate me and it’s all sorts of fun, others are just plain insulting, and those are the ones I have a hard time not sinking to the same level as, but the insulting ones, as well as the nice ones go from being close to the center, all the way to the DU side of the spectrum.

He knows that the individual citizens can gripe on the blogs, but that the People have no power over him. After all, his power grows as his polls drop. The question is whether Bush will leave or cock-up some fright that stops the 2009 elections. Certainly his Supreme Court would rule that he could stay until a successor was “duly elected.” He really has the power. We should all be very aftraid.

I wonder how some of the right-wingers will respond if their leader really takes on the title of Dear Leader?

The way the system is structured there are other variables (gerrymandering, e-vote fixing, etc) that can make a predetermined result happen.

Re: Power is the crack pipe for the GOP and they can’t put it down.

Great line. Still, it doesn’t plausable that Bush will be able to suspend elections, unless there is a major terrorist attack a day or two before the 2006 elections. Since the terrorists seem to get that another attack on American soil only strengthens Bush, it’s unlikely they would do so.

For BushCo to do it themselves would take a conspiracy far beyond a few kool-aid drinkers in Pentagon. While I agree that Bush would probably like to do it, it’s a pretty complicated and risky thing.

In way one might think that even Bush would be tired of it all. He’s definately lost that swaggering, smug, bravado he had when he was first elected. He seems rather dark and depressed these days, as opposed to the happy, carefree, bully he was 3 years ago. Sort of like Hitler, post the battle of Stalingrad.

Of course Murtha is right, the U.S. should withdraw the troops from Iraq and as soon as possible since this war was based all along on lies. It is also rather hypocritical of these generals to criticize Rumsfeld and at the same time to make sure that the word withdrawal never passes their lips. One wonders how many Americans have to be killed- 10,000, 58,000, 10,000?- before they will consider that no more Americans should have to be blown up and maimed and wounded and crippled in that abbatoir known as Iraq.

The question is whether Bush love being President so much that he will not surrender power. #139 – Good post, I agree with some of what you say. It seems pretty clear Bush is incurious and mentally lazy, but I don’t think that means he isn’t evil. Remember, the story about when George Bush was Gov of Texas, he loved to mock the woman (I’ve forgotten her name) who was due to be excuted and pleaded for clemency. He is evil, alright.

The author M. Scott Peck writes in his book, The Road Less Travelled about the evil of the lie. There is no bigger liar in the country, no man who purposely lies in ordr to go to war, to torture, to steal elections, give to the rich and steal from the poor the way Bush does. By buying into the meme that poor Georgie just isn’t as smart as the other boys, lets him off the hook.

His very closeness to Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld ought to tell us everything we need to know about Bush; that he’s a sociopathic, neurotic, and narcisistic man who has no conscience and he will always put his own interests ahead of the country’s.

Before the U.S. invaded Iraq, their were at most a few thousand folks spread around the globe who hated us. Now, after Bush, Cheney, Rummy and the rest have done their dirt work, we’ve made blood enemies out of millions upon millions. The numbers of our enemies, under this administration, have increased as much or more as our national debt. China, Russia, Iran, for God’s sake, has profited by the Bushies idiocy – surely not the middle-class American worker.I simply cannot understand anyone of anywhere near normal intellegnce, who is not in the higher reaches of the oil industry, or super rich, of a religious nut, who could back our present government.

Here’s the info on Karla Faye Tucker, the first woman to be executed in Texas in over a hundred years, and George Bush.

President George W. Bush Publicly Mocked Karla’s Clemency Plea
In early August 1999, then Presidential candidate Governor George W. Bush mocked Karla Tucker’s plea for clemency during an interview with Talk Magazine. Bush mentioned that he had watched Larry King’s interview with Karla Tucker from Texas Death Row.

“I didn’t meet with Larry King either when he came down for it,” Bush told the magazine. “I watched his interview with (Tucker), though. He asked her real difficult questions, like, `What would you say to Governor Bush?’ ”

The Talk reporter asked how she answered.
” `Please,’ Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, `don’t kill me,’ ” according to the magazine.
Here’s the relevant clip of the interview from the September 1999 issue of Talk Magazine.

GOP Presidental Primary Opponent Gary Bauer critisized Bush for these comments.
“I think it is nothing short of unbelievable that the governor of a major state running for president thought it was acceptable to mock a woman he decided to put to death,” Bauer said of Bush.

#144 first off I thought Iraq was a bad move from day one. I thought saddam was not important enough for war. As for Abu-Ghraib, the picture of the guy on a leash being walked by a girl in uniform,I’ve paid good money for a girl to do that to me. Falluja: no children deserve to die, yet in war horrible things happen and i’m sure the american soldiers feel worse about it that the terrorist they were hunting. Gitmo: prisoners of war are held until the war is over. when the war is over ,man and history will judge. Katrina: while the feds response was terrible, from first hand knowledge I KNOW the local and state authorities are responsible for immediate rescue and evac. FEMA’s job is not really in manpower as much as in monetary and support services. plenty of blame to go around. Wiretaps: If the NSA really has nothing better to do than listen to me say Goodnite to my wife and kids when i’m away, well its just another waste of my tax dollars. If their listening to terrorist, all the better. I know someone will now quote our founding fathers about giving up FREEDOMS for security……… yet when the politicos talk about gun control no one quotes them. I hope i covered all your points. peace to you Joe.

  149. Aurore says:

    Kenny,

    Nice try but no cigar.

On Katrina: My father lives in Florida at the edge of an area that was hit badly in 2004 by a hurricane. FEMA was super efficient, and got high marks from everyone. Mind you it was an election year and Bush’s brother was Gov of the state. As with everything BushCo does, it all depends on your connects as to whether you get well treated or not.

When you say it’s up to the locals, that’s disingenous and goes against common sense. The local officals are often inundated themselves and have no idea what’s going on, because electricity and communications are often knocked out. It’s the Feds, with the help of military who have the ability to step in immediately to provide security and aid.

  150. priscianus jr says:

Well if asking Rumsfeld to resign is like asking himself to resign, then the logical thing for the generals now, is to ask for Bush to resign along with Rumsfeld. But asking Bush to resign is the same thing as asking Cheney to resign, since it’s at least as much Cheney’s war as Bush’s. So the logical thing is for the generals to support impeachment of both Bush and Cheney.

Flattery will get you somewhere. :-)

Sometimes I feel like Cassandra, the woman in Greek myth who had the ability to foretell disaster but no one would listen to her.

    From Wikipedia:

In Greek mythology, Cassandra (”she who entangles men”) (also known as Alexandra) was a daughter of King Priam of Troy and his queen Hecuba, who captured the eye of Apollo and was granted the gift of prophecy. However, when she did not return his love, Apollo placed a curse on her so that no one would ever believe her predictions.

    Thanks for the bouquet!

  155. Aurore says:

PS. I have a relative who is a Repub. kool-aid drinker and about ten years ago he started sending me all kinds of right-wing think tank literature, I guess in the mistaken belief that I would see the light.

All it’s made me do is become even more convinced that these guys are danagerous nut cases who need to be stopped. It’s been George Bush’s intention all along to drastically shrink if not get rid of Medicare and Social Security, although when I tell that to people they bring out the straight jacket. Bush would like to hand off those functions to religious organizations, hence the Faith Based Initiative thing.

  156. krazny says:

It has been a long standing goal of conservatives to eliminate all social programs. Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, social security etc. Most republicans view these programs as wealth redistribution, and the rich being forced to support the lazy. If that was the case what does that say about our congress who are working very little this year. Perhaps social programs like their healthcare and paychecks should get some drastic cuts first.

How about tying their pay to the average wage within their state? May get some people in there who are doing it for the principal, plus that way they would be a true representative of the people in their state. Everything that effects their state would effect them.

  160. squegeeboo says:

    #171

If you lower their pay you get even more incompetant people, they should make more money, so their less likely to be sucked into bribery and the such, also, it may get smarter people interested, if its comparable with what they can make in industry.

I could care less if they’re doing it on princaple or not, just if they’re doing it well or not.

  161. Kenny says:

#161 then be your reasoning Bush should have declared martial law and told Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin he was in charge?

I tire of Raw’s out-of-context headlines such as “Russert says Bush ‘can’t’ fire Rumsfeld” followed by dim-witted comments that Russert is only looking after himself. What Russert said (I watched the Imus program, by the way) was absolutely correct. Firing Rumsfeld would be an absolute admission by Bush himself that he has been wrong all along, because Rummy is doing EXACTLY what Bush wants at every turn. Is this too deep for y’all?
Let’s get a little more honesty here and quit trashing the good people like Russert.

  164. Tundra says:

Ah, but the Republicans (especially under BushCo) are OK with corprate welfare, and other subsidies to the rich. It would be one thing if they were consistent, but in fact they’re robber barons disguised as true conservatives.

There used to be conservative types in this country that had a set of beliefs that, while not my choice, had a certain logic to it. Balanced budgets, conserving assets, including our natural resoures, and a carefulness that would never go for something as risky as the Iraq war.

But BushCo are right wing radicals masquerading as “conservatives” because it’s an easier philosphy to market to the American people.

    Phil Lyte,

I can’t. I know exactly what you mean. The Neo-Cons have fully implemented divide and conquer techniques. What people don’t seem to realize is that the Bush Cabal has intentionally set the left against the right and visa versa. They did this to keep us at odds with one another while they rape the country and destroy our image around the world.

  178. Tundra says:

Sure Phil, I’ll be gone for a little while though, but I can start.

How can we still be debating whether this is the worst administration in history, or not?
Really a matter of opinion, Personally I don’t think they are breaking positive records here.

I am embarrased to be a friggin’ american now and Inever have been before this administration.
I am not and will never be. This administration does not represent what an American is. No Administration does, America is a way of life not a very small group within the population who makes rules.

Can we not agree that everyone in this country deserves a fair chance to succeed and not try to prey on peoples fears that someone wants what they have earned through hard work?
Libertarian here, everyone deserves a fair shot, but keep your hands off what’s mine. I am generous on my own and don’t need the government telling me what I have to give money to.

I hate the way this country has become so polarized.

I don’t think intellectual honesty will allow you to lay this at the feet of “Bushco” – try as you might….

I know, I know, i’m a neophypte here. I just want to say that what we are doing doesn’t get us anything. We need to take this country back and we can’t do it by just bitchin’ about the other side. We need to get back to basics. I have heard nothing that would make me vote Democratic except that the Republicans suck! How bad is that? Dio we really think that earmarks are a Republican invention? I don’t think so. Until corporate america is forced to pay its fare share of taxes, like they used to not that long ago (think Kennedy), the middle class will be further and further eroded. How do we explain to our children that the american dream isn’t what it used to be? Doesn’t stop certain students. And I’ve heard rumors of a few teachers as well… Seriously.

#178 I suppose that is a major difference between liberals and rebuplicans – I do what I do for principal and not the pay. I decided to work for much less money than I could have. I feel good about it though and that keeps me positive and around many good people. I used to rake it in, so to speak. I made more 15 years ago but I decided long ago that I only want what I need. As a progressive, I’m trying to add and not subtract, not including children. That is also why I will adopt and not reproduce. I will take care of what is already here and not overpopulate.

  204. Allen says:

IMO, Bush firing Rummy is less “the equivalent of firing himself” but rather more akin to firing ones own boss!

  205. Romelee says:

Will Rove still be doing his job behind the scenes? And how can one go with out ratting on the others for what they did.I see REPS. saying to the reps. senators the way to get in in 2006 is to sign on with Feiengold What is that saying?.Iwish they would get impeached before more of our soliders die and mained for life.Ibelieve the Generals .And when they say thier are more feeling the same way,

  207. The Agonist says:

“Murtha Was Right” Says Tim Russert…

On “Imus” yesterday Tim Russert spilled the beans on Murtha and Rummy.
Russert says, “I got several calls from people at the Pentagon and others and they said, “You know Murtha’s right.” And I was stunned because you don’t usually get those…

  209. Ohio 2nd Blog » “You know Murtha’s right” says:

[...] Tim Russert on Imus: Well, I knew something was happening when I had John Murtha on several months ago and he talked about his plan for a timetable. [...]

  210. Robert Vaughn PhD says:

What people have to understand about the Republicans is they are greety not evil.

The George Bush will not risk nuclear war because it would kill weathy people.

Iran probably is 5 years away from developing a nuclear weapon. And probably there

will be a change in leadership within the next 5 years. In Addition, it is important to

realize the president term will expire before they develop a bomb.

Note the so called war is more of a police action. The general are probably angry over the cancelling of the crusader project.

Anyway vote democrat in the next election and vote for Hillary

  211. Mike says:

It’s unlikely the Bush wil ever be impeached for his incompetence, so I’m hoping he and Rummy will be staring at a War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague in the next few years.

  212. mike says:

Lets’s hope the Two Stooges will have the opporutnity to face a War Crimes Tribunal in the next few years.

  213. Phil Hicks says:

Bush will not fire Rumsfeldt because he cannot admit that he (Bush) made any mistake.
His collosal narcissism and basic weakness precludes his admission of responsibility or error for anything he has done. He is a case of terminal character defect.

  214. Mme flutterbye says:

Oy!!! Three more years…a little less maybe!!! Too long!!! Bush, Condi, and Rummy could blow up the world saving us from terrorists in that amount of time.

  215. Shining Light In Dark Corners says:

    Pentagon Leaks Become a Deluge…

Bush seems to have lost the support of the Pentagon. I suspect it’s about the condition of the armed services and threats towards Iran. Retiring generals are speaking to the press. Working generals are leaking to the press. Sounds like the same things…

  216. Gerry Long says:

Too much worry about Rumsfeld. Bush is the one we have to get out.
Rumsfeld, though stubborn and stupid about foreign affairs, doesn’t have his hand on the nuke button.

The simpleton in the White House has.

He is a sicko, a not-quite-recovered achoholic. Unstable. He has never had to pay for his multitude of failures. Dad and Dad’s $$$ friends have always bailed his butt out.

Now it’s all closing in on him, and you can see him getting more and more hot-headed. And no $$ friend of Dad has enough $$$ to bail him out this time, and he knows it.

The implications are staggering. So are the solutions. But we’re near the edge. Iran could tip us over.

Bush can’t let Rummy go, he knows too much.

  219. Mitch Schapira says:

George Bush is also employing terrorists in the White House. Read all about it on the schapira blog, at What we know so far …

And tell ‘em Big Mitch sent ya!

  220. Grouchy’s Liberaltopia » The Quotalizer: Bush’s Biggest Problem says:

[...] “And then, someone very close to the President said to me, you know, he won’t fire Rumsfeld because it would be the equivalent of firing himself. He can’t acknowledge that it was such a big mistake, in so many ways.” – Tim Russert on Don Imus April 19, 2006, as quoted by Judd at Think Progress. [...]

  221. Carl Wagonjak says:

Could the tipping point finally have come? We “lefties” have been disappointed too many times by tipping points (like the tipping points in the Iraq War for this Administration). Please God, if you are up there, open up the eyes of that last 30% to see the light! The Emporer has no clothes!
