Tony Snow Attributes High Gas Prices To “People Complaining About Donald Rumsfeld”»

Fox News Anchor Tony Snow is being considered as a replacement for White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan. Looks like he would fit right in. Last night on The O’Reilly Factor, Snow said that “people complaining about Donald Rumsfeld” were partially to blame for high gas prices. Watch it:

Transcript:

O’REILLY: Prices have doubled in the USA and continue to go up. What say you sir?

SNOW: Well, this is where you get to call me a pinhead again, Bill. You’re absolutely right, supplies are high. But a couple of different things going on.

Different types of oil that are in supply. Oil refining costs have gone up a little bit. But let’s be real about this: 60 percent of the price of a gallon of gasoline right now is crude oil prices. Crude oil over $70 a gallon right now. That gets written into the price. Why is that per gallon crude oil price so high? Because people are jittery.

You’ve got a guy in Iran saying we’re going to build a nuclear weapon. You’ve got people complaining about Donald Rumsfeld and the Pentagon. There are jitters about the stability of the Middle East. Those subside and a number of people say this, analysts in the industry, the price goes down again

So, does this mean that if he DOESN’T get to replace Scotty, it’ll be because of people complaining about the weather?!?!?

Talk about your twisted logic, this whopper would make the Soviet Union proud about their legacy living on with the MSM.

  6. squegeeboo Says:

Dosn’t that make sense though. If speculation due to instability in the Middle East can cause gas price to rise, dosn’t the threat of Rumsfeld planning attacks on Iran add to that instability?

Judd, I corrected on another thread TP’s assertion, that Snow is a Fox News Anchor. I know you love mea culpa’s…but a simple correction will do.

  12. Democrat Soldier Says:

#6 - Yes, to an extent. The way they’re playing the “criticism” card is that there is a direct relationship that anyone who criticizes Sec. Rumsfeld is responsible for rising gas prices.

Then again, if there WAS a direct relationship between criticism and prices, then the Republicans were responsible for the economic boom of the 90’s by criticizing Pres. Clinton! ;-)

Mr. Snow (job) is trying to freeze the criticism by making a parallel with the rising gas prices. He’s forgetting that it rose substantially prior to the criticism. An inconvenient fact that he leaves out.

  13. yankeluh Says:

Does he hear the voices also?

  14. krazny Says:

to be fair he also mentions the iran bomb situation. He is not completly blaming the rising oil prices on criticism of Rumsfeld. On the other hand he does skip over what is driving oil prices. Being jittery of the iddle east, because of ar in Iraq, the potential for war in Iran, and increased demand worldwide.

  15. barfly Says:

    Comment by squegeeboo — April 19, 2006 @ 12:04

That’s not what “You’ve got people complaining about Donald Rumsfeld and the Pentagon” means - it asserts that it’s the complainers’ fault, not what they’re complaining about (Rumsfeld).

  16. e_five Says:

Since he likes shooting the messenger so much, why doesn’t he start with himself?

  17. cats are flyfishn Says:

WOW - now that’s reaching for straws. I can’t believe that anyone would make such a STUPID statement publically.

I just watched a show on NOVA about “global dimming” and how particles of polution are restraining the amount of global warming that is taking place because of greenhouse gases. When we clean up the particles of polution, then the global warming will excellerate. What we have here is: we need to stop relying on fossil fuels to generate all our energy needs. Scientists predict that within the next 100 years (if we continues on our current dependencies), the temperature will rise expotentially causing water levels to rise and world wide droughts. The heat will kill trees and most plant life and I don’t need to explain further.

As responsible citizens of this planet, we need to tell the oil rich neocons that we are moving away from our dependency on THEM and moving towards sustainable energy sources.

  18. squegeeboo Says:

#15 But their complaints can lead to higher jitters in investors, due to even less stability in the decision making process as the establishment and the populace vie for control of the decisions.

If instead people agreed with Rumsfeld instead of opposing him, at least the investors would know in which directions developments in the Middle East would continue to preceed, and could then invest accordingly. So it really is the complainers fault.

    Now hows that for spin?

  19. bushllit Says:

    lets not forget today’s thinkfast

A new consumer report finds that in California, “corporate markups and profiteering are responsible for spring [gas] price spikes, not rising crude costs or the national switchover to higher-cost ethanol, as the oil industry claims.”

  20. cats are flyfishn Says:

Another thing - this Snow asshole states concerns about stability in the middle east. Doesn’t this dumbf**f know that bombing Iran will only further decrease the stability in the middle east? God - these folks went right pass the “brains” line while still in the development stage prior to birth. Or someone forgot to catch them when their mommy gave birth and their heads hit the concrete floor.

So hosting isn’t the same as anchoring?

  24. cats are flyfishn Says:

Oh yeah - remember the phony energy cost inflation inflicted upon the citizens of California by Enron? Guess is was the old ladies that complained about the high cost of electricity that caused the ever increasing prices.

    #18, Squeegee,

You provide a good point, if we were to only look at the current snapshot in time. If we look at the bigger picture, it still goes back to Rumsfeld’s leadership in the first place that has largly contributed to the intstability in the Middle East. Their wouldn’t be complaining if Rumsfeld had done a better job over the last 5 years. The complaining is a culmination of 5 years of poor leadership.

  41. C Storms Says:

What makes the region unstable is a bunch of lunitic leaders who are hell bent on destroying another country in the region (Israel). Unfortunately for them, their lunitic Muslim brothers decided to literally bring us into that instability by killing 3 thousand innocent people.

Pacifism toward crazy political leaders is not the answer. We must do something and that’s what we’re doing in Iraq. It’s a war. Bush should not have said the major conflict was over, because it wasn’t over, but that doesn’t make that conflict any less necessary. To the contrary, our resolve to bring stability should be even stronger.

Let’s say we do go to war with Iran. If the UN has made it clear Iran is to get scrap their nuclear ambitions, and they don’t, who’s to blame for the war? This is where liberals always make it seem as if the enforcer is at fault, when in reality the blame lies with the lunitic.

As for Tony Snow’s comments, in America, the media’s fixation with bringing down Rumsfeld certainly does have an impact on how investers view the Middle East. I think it was an excellent point.

  42. Jules Says:

C Storm are you up for Scottie’s job? Is this your “screen test”? Cause you spin crap about as well as your buddy Snow and the rest of your criminal cartel!

  46. Unholy Moses Says:

Maybe someone can explain to me how in the hell Brazil can go to 100% ethanol for their cars — all of which is produced within their own country — yet we continue to rely on 18th century technology?

Except you can’t mention that the current administration has ties to the big oil companies, that big oil makes huge campaign contributions, or that oil companies closed refineries in the 1980’s.

    What … no one?

  47. Jules Says:

C Storm if we are going after lunitics why stop with Iran? Why not N. Korea? They already have WMD’s. Iran will not have them for another decade. For that matter, Hussein did not have them at all. What are we going to start a war with the world…oh yeah, you repugnits need WWIII to win the next elections. Are you signing up to help eradicate the evil?

  48. squegeeboo Says:

Sugar cane gives a good ethanol yield, they get 3 growing seasons a year due to the climate, and they’ve been moving over to it for 20+ years.
Their goal is by next year, so probably in the next 2-5 year range realistically, they hope to be off imported oil all together.

  49. squegeeboo Says:

#48 “Why not N. Korea? They already have WMD’s”

You just answered it yourself. Because they already have them, if we go after them, they can launch in S. Korea, as well as Japan. Plus they claim to have missles that can reach our western Seaboard now.

Instead, Iran dosn’t have them yet, so they can be dealt with at a much lower cost.

  50. Spudge_Boy Says:

Sugar cane gives a good ethanol yield

Don’t we have a state called Hawwaii that grows sugar cane?

  51. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid Says:

#42: A conflict was in no way necessary because Saddam was contained by sanctions, as evidenced by his utter lack of any military or WMD ability. If, however, you somehow convince someone that a conflict was necessary, then I would argue that the conflict should contain two things: (1) a definition of victory; (2) a plan to achieve victory. This war had, and still has, neither.

More probable reasons for high gas prices: (1) record profits by oil companies; (2) the ongoing, quagmire of a war in Iraq.

  52. Jules Says:

#50 - that makes no sense. The first in what has now become an ever changing line of reasoning for going to war with Iraq is that they had WMD’s. So if we follow that line of reasoning for going to war with a perceived threat shouldn’ t N. Korea be next on Bush’s hit list?

  53. Spudge_Boy Says:

Anybody else find it very interesting that the President of China met with Bill Gates before he met with George Bush?

During his first stop, Hu toured the campus of software giant Microsoft Corp. and later dined at the $100 million home of its chairman, Bill Gates, the world’s richest man.

The highlight of his visit will be a meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush on Thursday, where Iran and Taiwan are on the agenda, along with a variety of trade and human rights issues.

In Chinese culture you meet with the most important person first as a sign of respect.

  54. progressive and proud Says:

#53 Just take a short nap, the reason for the war will change. It’s a lot like the weather here in TN. Or the politicians for that matter.

  55. squegeeboo Says:

#53 But all they could reach is Israel, as opposed to a wider spectrum of allies.

(thats the best I can do, weak I know)

#52 “More probable reasons for high gas prices: (1) record profits by oil companies; (2) the ongoing, quagmire of a war in Iraq.”

Their profits are high, but their profit margins are not. The real reason is increasing global demand, specifically China/India. Your #2 I agree with though.

Seitchgrass also provides a good yield (although I’m not sure of it compared to sugar cane) as compared to corn (which is actually not the best choice). Also, there are parts of south that could probably grow sugar cane (along with Hawaii, as another person posted).

While we consume sooooo much gasoline — and are so dependent on the internal combustion engine — that we may never get off oil altogether, even cutting our dependence by 25 to 40% would make a huge difference.

What I fail to understand is why an oil company doesn’t go out of its way to find an alternative. Oil is expensive to find, pump and refine, so finding other solutions wouldn’t hurt their bottom line. And the positive PR from making a real commitment to alternatives would be HUGE.

It simply makes absofuckinglutely no sense to me. None. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

#56 To add on to my post, also, N Korea has Nukes specifically, which would cause much more damage, and are a much better deterient then conventional WMD such as Bio, or chem. Part of the reasoning for Iraq was their believed WMD stockpiles, coupled with their believed attempt to get Nukes to add on to their stockpiles.

Off topic but…Props to the Smokies!! One small road to lessen pollution and keep nature’s habitat for those who had it first - the ANIMALS!! And NO FEES for entry. I can’t help it but it is one of the reasons I came back to this wacky red state. I encourage all to see and bring little money. We know how to show some Southern hospitality at a great bargain.

Just don’t move here; the pay is lousy and most are in poverty and uninsured. The healthcare is subsubpar (I have had two operations that were unnecessary and left me not the way I went in, no elaboration) and they are talking about abortion as if it should be an issue or something.

Sure, I can get a biodiesel vehicle. But I’m going to get it filled … where, exactly? Hydrogen? No automaker mass produces one of those and, again, where in the hell am I going to fill up? Electric cars require electricity, which is produced primarily in COAL BURNING power plants.

Again, I go back to my main point: The oil companies have such a strangle hold on this current administration that the only solution you all offer is raping the environment. Meanwhile, Joe and Jane American get raped at the gas pump.

And I though you all were the “party of ideas.” Oh wait … you are. Just not any new ideas.

  66. squegeeboo Says:

#66 The issue with american sugar cane is you don’t get 3 seasons out of it, except for maybe Hawaii, and it can only be grown in certain areas of the country. so you could use it partially for ethanol, but you would require anouther crop, such as corn or switchgrass. Apparently ocean algea or planktoon or somesuch thing has an amazing output, and could also be harvested.

#67 “which is produced primarily in COAL BURNING power plants.” Your issue was giving big oil money, seems like that would let you stop :)
or you could move to an area that is primarally serviced by nuke/hydro, such as France, 80% nuke power, just be on the watch for rioters.

Drilling in Alaska will produce very VERY little for a VERY short time. It is greedy to destroy GOD’s earth for such a scant profit.

I think HE would be insulted by the very thought of the utter desecration.

He who thinks about another 6 cups of gas as opposed to the very existence of certain species. It is the deterioration of the mind here at work. The thought of ruining Alaska for the opportunity to keep your SUV running another few miles is mindboggling to me.

What kind of people have these kinds of values? I was taught to love the earth. I was told that it is the one resourse that cannot get back once it is destroyed. My mother told me my first mother was earth and to appreciate her.

Why would we want to take it for granted? I spoke of the Smokies earlier and the fact that we can produce sugarcane. Why not spend the valuable time to try to find a way to cultivate it here without destroying it? I notice Bush says we are too dependent on “foreign” oil. What about domestic oil? I see nefarious intentions indeed.

I take the bus. Matter of fact, it’s a clean fuel bus. I mean, this isn’t NYC and the busses aren’t very crowded. I say get your fat Wal-Mart ass out of your big Hummer and take the bus. We can solve this problem with merely mindset, but the greedy cannot do it. They just can’t give up something for no instant gratification. We all know this is true and until we teach our children to love our earth and each other more than we want material crap, it will never change.

What about you Christians? You all agree, don’t you? God would want you to ride the bus and buy less expensive clothes. Why don’t you? Those that are antiabortion, by their reasoning, should all ride the bus and should be against ANWAR.

Oil, rising rates could spoil the party

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - The United States rode out oil above $70 a barrel last fall but long-term interest rates were low.

And consumers have grappled with mortgage rates at current levels but never when they were paying nearly $3 a gallon for gasoline.

Even without rates or energy prices at these levels, most economists were looking for slower economic growth in the second half of this year.

But if $70 oil persists and rates keep rising much further, the one-two punch could take a bigger bite out of consumer spending than previously expected. Some economists even see the threat of a recession if recent increases continue.

Natural gas rates continue to rise because the US is past peak production of it, so now you have a longer supply line for it(importing from Canada), as well as an increased demand as people begin to move over to it for heating/utilities because it is cheaper than oil.

I posted this in that other thread. I will repost it here to correct the “corrector”. From FoxNews’ own web site:

FOX News Radio Service provides radio stations with hourly newscasts at both top and bottom of the hour. Newscasts are anchored by trusted FOX News Channel correspondents and provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The service also provides radio stations with radio-anchored breaking news coverage of crisis events both nationally and internationally.
“The Tony Snow Show” engages listeners with thought-provoking opinion and analysis on key issues affecting our lives. Hosted by renowned journalist Tony Snow of the FOX News Channel, “The Tony Snow Show” features top political guests such as Dick Cheney and Colin Powell, as well as famous personalities from the worlds of news, film, television, radio and music.

    FOX News Radio Service

So, Tony Snow anchors his own show because he is a “trusted FOX News Channel correspondent” -but he is not an anchor? Riiight…

It is literally impossible for me to get from anywhere close to home to work. I’d have to drive 15 miles before I can find any direct or even connecting route. It’s insane.

  87. hawaiiantel Says:

No, no, no, no….Snow’s close, but he’s got to get with the message. Its not the people complaining about Rumsfeld, its those damned Al Qaeda/Taliban media committees. They’re the cause of gas price increase, you see. They’re the ones causing the jitters. But as no.1 commentor says, Snow is “obviously qualified to work at the White House.”

Its all about displacing responsibility….Lets see, the cause of high medical insurance premiums–its the American consumer, using medical care without comparison shopping. Next!

  89. Solitaire Says:

    ANother total wingnut… OF COURSE!

  90. Blue State Red Says:

Once again you progs demonstrate your ignorance of capitalism. Snow’s comment is essentially correct, as anyone familiar with commodity trading knows.

Supplies of high-demand commodities are often subject to volatile conditions, not just the laws of supply and demand. Oil is one of those commodities. So is food. When people perceive that uncertainty or instability of supply may affect the availability of a commodity, they tend to hoard it, or lock in future contracts, thereby driving up the market price. To that extent, calls for a major change in Iraq policy leadership, such as the resignation of SecDef Rumsfeld, may help drive up short term oil prices more than would the actual event itself.

  91. koalablue Says:

Part of the reason for higher oil prices are that the USD has dropped in value a lot over the past 3 years. No wonder considering the vast debt levels the current admin likes to operate under. What is a wonder the massive amount of debt and the smallest recovery after a recession.

With the caveat that you should be careful what you wish for it might be a good thing if this guy were to be the next Press Sect’y. The MSM would have a field day. Scott MClellen, for all his faults, wasn’t an ass.

On a foreign policy note, I guess PP missed the part in the Bible where God was very angry with the Israelites for not killing all of their enemy - men, women and children. Those Jews showed great compassion - but they disobeyed their God - and we see the results of that disobedience to this day.

I really think both the palestine and israelis are both part of the problem. But oh that’s right jews are god’s people, and arabs are just insignificant human beings that don’t deserve any land because they

  104. Alan Rader Says:

I have worked in the oil industry all of my life and know a little bit about it. Oil has always been a feast or famine business. In 1986 The price of oil fell from $29 to $9 and stayed that way for a long time; You all thought that was great. Meanwhile, I lost my business and there were no jobs in the oil sector for many years. Midland and Odessa TX were ghost towns, hundreds of banks went broke, hundreds of thousands of oil workers lost their jobs. Companies that make drilling rigs went bankrupt and they even stopped teaching petroleum geology in many universities across the country. Oil was cheap for 16 years! It will take several years for new fields to come on line and refineries to be built. It will take six to eight years before there are enough skilled workers to do the filthy dangerous jobs to get you the energy you need.

The price of oil will go down just the way it came up and politicians will have little to do with it. The world runs on oil and there is nothing cheaper even at $100 per barrel. Other sources of energy will replace it when it is profitable to do so and that is a long time away.

Everything is made from petroleum, even the keyboard you are typing on right now!

    Alan

  105. Brian Knudson Says:

Can we get a Liberal here to speak about Tony’s comments using real facts, and an actual knowledge of the Oil Industry, and not the usual overly emotional, devoid of logic, and visceral blabbering that conservatives have come to expect from them.

  106. barbara mooney Says:

how stupid and full of lies this is! the truth is, the high gas prices are the result of (1) bush invading iraq. (2) bush and cheney deregulating big oil for thier profits and thier buddies. (3) bush did away with the anti trust laws president clinton put in place to keep the big oil companies in check. this has nothing to do with rumsfeld. but while i’m at it, is anyone aware of dick army calling nancy polaosi ingnorant because she got up and told the truth today about bush and high oil prices? i’m mad as heck. who do these people think they are? army , just as bush, blames all of us for high gas prices. so, let’s all show them! let’s have a national day of boycotting any gas. grab a bike, a horse, anything that doesn’t use thier precious oil. let’s not let them make anymore profit off our backs. make them go work for it instead of stealing from us. and this will also take the profits fromn the wall street traders. ha! ha! ha!

  107. RunningDogLackey Says:

#108 Attaboy, Sparky. Teach us some manners, you dynamic winger God-Man!

  108. pelle lindbergh Says:

Looks like somebody already did, Brian; right before you came online. Can’t vouch for Mr. Rader’s “liberalness” one way or the other, though.

Regardless of one’s political bias, energy conservation in the US remains virtually unenforceable except by price. That makes oil corporations the only gatekeepers and — understandably — they want the jitters over Iran — and Venezuela — to go away about as much as Eskimos want palm trees to grow in Alaska. That much most people have first-hand experience with in the oil business.

But if Tony Snow wants to blame somebody I don’t know why he continues to give Rumsfeld a free pass — or Bush, for that matter. Liberal, Conservative, or “Know-Nothing,” Rumsfeld’s misplanning for the Iraq War has given even ice-water veined, steel-nerved military leaders the jitters. Taking Iran off the oil market with military attacks doesn’t require an in-depth knowledge of the oil industry to see the disaster that’d ensue. An MD with a residency in Psychiatry might be of enormous value, though.

You know how bad a “bleeding-heart” conservative sounds. About as bad as a “bleeding-heart” liberal. Snow lately has done more whining on Fox than anybody else because the neocons are in real trouble and he can’t cope with it. Worse, he might have to stop being a pundit and work for a living.

    When it rains it pours!.

  109. FUBAR Says:

OMG. ROTFLMAO. They never cease to amaze. Yep, the generals knew the price of fuel would go up the minute they started to dog rummy. Maybe Tony should look at what his boy Bush has actually done. This is a direct result of us being in Iraq and the arrogant, hardline stance he is taking with respect to Iran. And don’t forget how much he hates Hugo Chavez. Will someone please put a straightjacket on Bush and put him in a padded room forever. I don’t know how much more of this I can take. You know it would actually be funny if it weren’t so scary that these people think this way. Denial ain’t just a river.

  112. Dan Says:

I personally blame high gas prices on the relationship between the spinning numbers towards the top of the gas pump as compared to the spinning numbers that are generally placed somewhat lower on the gas pump. High electric bills are a similar problem, it is a single wheel that spins horizontally inside a box on the outside of most homes, slowing this wheel down will solve the economic problems of the middle and lower classes.

  121. Brian Knudson Says:

Considering that nearly all progressively liberal countries charge almost twice as much for gas as the United States, and nearly all the countries that are cheaper than the United States are the Petroleum Producing countires, I would say we’re in a pretty good position. I was paying $3/gal in Scotland 10 years ago.

A few facts ALWAYS left off the table by Liberals. We have added 70 Million Americans to the country since the last major Refinery came on line and the last Nuke plant was built. That’s a 33% increase in users and a 0% increase in producers. Now add the fact that 2.5 BILLION Chinese and Indians are getting off their bicycles and are putting out their campfires, and you are creating another 100% increase in worldwide demand.

You can blame Bush all you want, but no-one, and I mean no-one, will stop the rise in gas as long as we continue to hold up the energy companies from finding and producing more of it. That means petro, nuke, wind, whatever. You either want gas and will allow the companies to go get it. Or you don’t and your happy walking.

  122. Steve Savage Says:

So basically they’re admitting that gasoline prices are totally speculative, based on what investors and oil barons feel like they can get away with.

It has to be liberals fault, i mean i am so glad we got Bush in office, heck that $1.07 a gallon gasoline under clinton was getting SO tiresome!

  123. Freeman Says:

The escalating gas prices and soaring profits are largely due to Bush increasing the US strategic oil reserves by 40 million gallons. We are placed in a position of competing with our own government at the pump, the government in turn paying with our own tax dollars. We are double-screwed.

http://www.yuricareport.com/Energy/How Did Oil Prices Get so High.htm

  124. Russell Miller Says:

i need to learn that we have communist running and controling our oil companies

  125. Brian Knudson Says:

40M gallons causing a price increase? We burn that off in an hour.

Gas prices are purely supply and demand. If there are more users than producers, than the price goes up. We pay Oprah Winfrey, Howard Stern, and Tom Cruise HUNDREDS of Millions of dollars for 1-2 hours of entertainment that I would argue we could all survive without. But big oil makes a lousy 6-7 cents profit on the dollar, which is comparable to Starbucks and Evian (The Feds make 18 cents a galllon and New York Sate makes 44.5 cents) by employing hundreds of thousands of people around the world, putting heating and air conditioning into our homes, and providing the petroleum that makes damm near everthing we use, and you want to string them up. (Plus oil profits go into nearly everyones 401K or mutual fund for retirement.) Again, if you want lower prices at the pump, let them go find and make more energy. More supply, lower prices.
