Appearing this morning on ABC’s This Week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) lectured the nation on the importance of driving fuel efficient vehicles:
STEPHANOPOULOS: And I was struck by the San Francisco Chronicle that said, Get used to $3 a gallon a gas, say the experts. Is that your message, too, that people just have to get used to this?
SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, not really. I think that we have to fight that. And I have encouraged people here in this state that we should fight back…
STEPHANOPOULOS: How do you fight back?
SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, we have to buy vehicles that are fuel-efficient…We want to inspire people to buy cars that are fuel-efficient, and also drive less, do more carpooling and so on. Because remember, the oil price is all based on supply and demand.
It was a curious argument from the man who literally brought the Humvee, the most fuel inefficient civilian vehicle on earth, to the roadways:
The partnership of Schwarzenegger with the Hummer brand is like no other celebrity/manufacturer relationship. The muscle man is a legitimate player in a game that paid off with the actualization of the Hummer product line. While filming “Kindergarten Cop” about a decade ago, Schwarzenegger saw a fleet of military HMMWV/Humvee vehicles rolling down the street. He had to have one. Since the Humvee was a military-only vehicle, Schwarzenegger initiated talks with the manufacturer, AM General Corp., and the U.S. Army. Those discussions resulted in the civilian Hummer.
Arnold owns five gas powered Humvees and is still driving them. Here’s a picture of him cruising in a Humvee last year:
GM has loaned Arnold a sixth Humvee that runs on hydrogen but he is “still ushered around in a state fleet of armor-plated, gas-burning Chevy Suburbans“
Yes, Arnold is being a hypocrite in the mold of John Kerry and his mouthpiece wife. The last thing Americans need is advice from the biggest energy consumers who also happen to be some of the richest people in the country.
NOTE to Arnold: When trying to cater to the radical enviroNazis, don't be such a hypocrite.
April 23rd, 2006 at 7:03 pmWhat was that Book that Bush reads so much?
April 23rd, 2006 at 7:05 pmThe Very Hungry Caterpillar..I think.
I wonder if Arnold has a Copy signed by George.
"GM does not allow Schwarzenegger to use the "Self-Serve" lane at the hydrogen station. The company fills the tank itself, keeps the vehicle in Lake Forest, Calif. (near its engineering facilities and Quantum's offices) and requires that a GM engineer ride in the car at all times"
NOTE to Arnold: don’t be such a hypocrite.

That would improve the temporary bottom line for the oil industry, but it makes America more dependent on foreign oil and hastens the depletion of oil and other energy resources. He offered a $10 billion gift to the oil companies to stimulate demand rather than a subsidy for conservation measures.

Feh...and yet one more person on the far right proves the utter hypocrisy of their position. Talk about, "do as I say, not as I do" -- but then again, if appearances are anything to go on, most conservatives believe that the rules which they expect other people to abide by don't apply to themselves...

Ahnold was also frequently seen smoking cigars when he was 41's public health and fitness advisor. I think he may have been ads for cigars at the time as well. Oh, and the steroids too.
April 23rd, 2006 at 7:55 pmI think that everyone who is insulting John Kerry completely out of nowhere should lay off because you clearly have NO idea what you are talking about.
April 23rd, 2006 at 8:14 pmKerry didn't sell himself well enough so I can at least be a bit angry with him. I could also say that he is, well, boring and that was part of the reason we lost. Oh, boring and intelligent. Bush makes his base feel comfortable:)
Arnold is not being a hypocrite when it comes to the state fleet of vehicles. The suburbans are standard armored vehicles for government officials who are potential targets...
What is he going to do - drive an armored prius around? (it wouldn't work anyway - the thing wouldn't move).
As for his personal fleet? Sure it's hypocritical *if he drives them*. Owning six humvees doesn't mean you're driving them all at once or at all. It's more for show. Of course, it's a bad example for all the SUV lovers.
Truth is, though, that people are going to stop loving SUVs soon. High gas prices should be seen as a godsend by the environmental movement - in the long run people will switch to more fuel efficient vehicles.

BUT BORING? What do we want, a man who's going to be a great president, or someone to entertain us? Because God knows, we don't even need the late night TV comedians to make fun of Bush, the man is a walking joke!

April 24th, 2006 at 8:44 amGreetings from California. I just posted an article on the pickle that Arnold is in over gasoline prices in the state. The Speaker of the California Assembly is calling for an emergency declaration and for the Governator to ask the State Energy Commission to investigate price gouging. There is a bill up this afternoon--local time 1:30 p.m. to have the state institute a windfall profits tax. We also have a bill to have our stte Public Utilities Commission regulate the market behavior of oil refiners in the state.
Love your piece about the 5 Hummers and put a link in the article.
There's a lot happening here. You can h ave the President back. The article itself is at http://www.californiaprogressreport.com/2006/04/will_arnold_sup.html and we've got other stuff about the President's visit on the site as well.

I would much rather have the people whom Kerry would have appointed in power right now rather than Cheney and Co, nothing to think twice about there. But I guess that Kerry's team was hardly a match for Rove's formidable campaign machine, and since we seem to elect our presidents based on how much fun we expect they'd be at a barbecue, it's the guys who might actually be effective in the role of PRESIDENT who get screwed.
April 24th, 2006 at 9:19 am31 Alexandra
It isn't the guys who can actually run the country that gets screwed, its the country itself.
That said, back to Arnold.
Arnold is actually Bush but more so if you look at his campaign. Very little in the way of issues, a sneering "They are girly men" approach to his opponents, and a love of staged photo ops. The guy got voted in frankly because of The Terminator, not because of The Issues. The same could be said for Bush, save that he went cowboy rather then killer robot.
It is kind of disturbing that that is what the Rightwing views as great images for a candidate, a agricultural worker with a decidedly dubious view of the law and a cyborg whose stated aim is the destruction of humanity.

Bush was the correct choice then as now in my opinion. Kerry's views on Iraq and the economy and most everything else mirrored Bush's at least according to his campaign rhetoric yet Kerry's willingness to accede to the corrupt UN and Axis of Weasels in matters of American security were his undoing. That and that crazy bitch of a wife he has sealed his doom. Besides, YOU DON'T KNOW who Kerry would have appointed so to say they are better than the men and women we have now is to say the least idiotic.
You're another fine example of why women shouldn't be allowed to vote. Next time use your head for something other than a beer coaster.
April 24th, 2006 at 10:19 amOIl is based on supply and demand? That must be why oil company profits don't rise exponentially with every price increase of a barrel or oil.
OH WAIT. Every time the price of oil goes up 2 cents, the price at the pump jumps up 10 cents. And every time the cost of a barrel goes down....well, maybe if we're lucky and the companies are feeling generaous, the price at the pump will go down 5 cents. It is simple math. If oil companies are making INCREASED profits every single quarter, then clearly the price increases at the pump are much greater than the price per barrle. Supply and demand is simply being used as an excuse. If the price was purely due to supply and demand then oil companies profits should also rise and fall with the price per barrel, or at the very least remain stable.
IT is also completely ignorant of the fact that oil companies in the 90s said gas supply was running at a surplus and to avoid prices dropping, they started shutting down refineries. Now, we constantly hear there is plenty of supply for now, but there is a serious bottleneck at the refinery level causing artificial shortages. Someone who is governor of California should be the first person suspicious of companies creating artificial shortages at the risk of the population....aka Enron.

April 24th, 2006 at 11:02 amYou perfectly embody my argument as to why I don't believe that this country is truly democratic.
I know enough about the Senator to know that he would have made far better choices in appointing his political advisors than Bush has. Don't get me wrong, I believe that Cheney, Rummy and the rest are all extremely intelligent and effective in getting their agenda through. The problem is with their agenda itself. I think that there is little doubt that Kerry's administration would have been characterized by a completely different vision and agenda than the one with which the US is currently cursed.

You perfectly embody my argument as to why I don’t believe that this country is truly democratic.
Well then, chalk one up for me. Here's a hint Sugar, this ain't no Democracy. It's a Republic. One more thing..voting is a privilege not a right. There are a lot of losers out there that for one reason or another don't deserve the privilege. For example, people that don't know the difference between a Democracy and a Republic.
I think that there is little doubt that Kerry’s administration would have been characterized by a completely different vision and agenda than the one with which the US is currently cursed.

You have no rational reason or facts in evidence to back up that statement. For example, Kerry would have invaded Iraq. All this nonsense about "what we know now compared to what we knew then is all Donk bullshit. Donks LOVE WAR. They've started every one so far.

April 24th, 2006 at 12:58 pm#39 Thanks.
I-Right-I EXCUSE ME for not cohering to your technical word nuances (isn't that what you conservatives are always griping on the Democrats for?) This is a DEMOCRATIC republic, ostensibly, and not sure where you get your news and information from, but the US is referred to as an example of a "Western DEMOCRACY," rather than Republic.
April 24th, 2006 at 1:55 pmSecondly, Kerry wasn't even running for president prior to the war in Iraq so it would have been impossible for him to be the one to launch the invasion. If you know anything about the administration figures that you seem to love so much, you'll know that they had Iraq on their radar years before the September 11 attacks even occurred. Would Kerry have stayed in Iraq? I can't say for sure, but I think he probably would have, because he'd have no choice but to deal with the mess that Bush has gotten the US into there. I would be willing to bet that we'd be in a much better situation now though, because the international community which you denigrate so much would have been more willing to help us out. Kerry would have built a REAL coalition, not a joke where most partners to the war were in the style of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia which sent about, oh, less than 50 troops? Give me a break.
It’s who California wanted as governor, They knew he had Hummers when they voted him in.

Again, for the thinking impared... : ) I lived in California at the time, and voted in that election. The liberals had more choices than the Republicans. As a result, the Republicans choices were collectively pooled, as opposed to spread out over a myriad of liberals, and therefore Arnold won by favorable circumstances.
If there are 15 liberal candidates and 2 Republican (one of which was a neocon and the other a moderate - Arnold), who has the better odds? So he won. He won't repeat in a 1 on 1 election against a liberal. Unless Diebold is involved.
The hypocrasy here is in him owning the Hummers buty chastizing those who don't buy fuel efficient cars - not in him being elected while owning them. See the difference?

You'd be a lot less unpopular if you would classify people by the things they can control (education, awareness, conscience, etc.) instead of the things they cannot (gender, skin color, national origin, etc.)
For example, no offense to Alex, as I didn't read her post, but if you replace 'women' with something like 'uneducated', your insult is less asinine and more plausible. It takes the focus off your ignorance and puts it on the person who made the claim you're refuting. It's why I routinely kick your butt around here. You can't control that you are a man, but you can control that you act like a redneck, so I don't point out your gender, but your redneckiness. Capisce?
I'm sure I'll get berrated for giving you pointers, but after this weekend's 9/11 Conspiracy hot button, I really don't care.
April 24th, 2006 at 4:32 pmArnold DID NOT WIN THE RECALL ELECTION. IT WAS STOLEN.
We CAUGHT Diebold stealing the election. NO TABULATOR IN THE STATE HAD LEGAL SOFTWARE.
This crap about how he got in is mirrored by how GWB got in. KERRY WON IN 2004.
When we paid $125,000 for the COURT-ORDERED recount, how come Bush campaign chair and SecState of Ohio 'Katherine' Blackwell didn't do his legal duty and give us a recount?
Because COUPS DON'T OFFER RECOUNTS.
"Kerry didn’t sell himself well enough so I can at least be a bit angry with him."
HILARIOUS. Kerry won and would have won -- REGARDLESS of his stump performance.
Ask yourself if YOU have recount rights in any election your state holds. In California, you did not have the right to recount from 1999-2006 -- SEVEN YEARS OF NO PAPER TO RECOUNT.
Now we are getting the Diebolding TSx system, which records votes, or not, on toilet paper rolls (non-randomized) OF THERMAL PAPER, which is non-archival, and can be voided by leaving it in a hot car for an hour. And we STILL don't have recount rights, unless we can convince the crooked SecState to hold them -- there is no longer an affirmative right to recount, as our state Constitution requires.
Anyhow, we are RECALLING ARNIE, and you can help.
http://www.savecalnow.com
It looks like it will be another special election, but that is the direct result of Arnie's cheating SecState delaying the filing approval to the last possible moment. Anyhow, the Recall collection is already nearly completed -- there are 10,000 volunteer signature collectors working -- you can help us reach the required million signatures! It's easy, and fun. Any registered California voter can STOP ARNIE from borrowing $220 Billion in bonds, as he has threatened.
April 24th, 2006 at 5:20 pmOh, and as for his fleet of Suburbans and the THUGGISH mile long caravans he uses, which block traffic for HOURS, I would like to remind people that Gov. Jerry Brown drove himself to work in a Dodge Dart.

He has committed numerous CA and federal crimes (tax fraud, illegally working on tourist visa, construction fraud against quake victims, failure to obtain a motorcycle drivers licence, sexual harrassment, and conspiracy to defraud CA voters, among other crimes, such as participating in the ENRON ripoff of California). He is persona non grata -- help kick him OUT.

You tell 'em sister! These are the people who complain about losing their "rights" at the drop of a hat but attend lectures and shout down speakers they don't agree with. These are the people that complain that some conservative sites have strict policy on "trolls" and will tell you how many sites they've managed to get thrown off of but want to do the same thing when they are in the majority. Hypocrisy is such an over used word around here so let's just call them what they are shall we? Liberals.
At the core of modern liberalism is the spoiled child — miserable, as all spoiled children are, unsatisfied, demanding, ill-disciplined, despotic and useless. Liberalism is a philosophy of sniveling brats. I poop on them.

OK...let's just say for the sake of argument that stupid Negro women elected by the kind of people that would vote for a stupid Negro woman are the kind of losers I'm talking about.
Here's a clip of "Buckwheat" McKinney calling her aid a "fool" "off the record" then telling the media what is and what is not permissible to air. Look at this woman's face when she tries to lay down the law concerning the 1st Amendment. You just can't buy this kind of election campaign footage for any price.

I didn't like Cynthia McKinney when I was a Republican and I still don't like her as a liberal Independent. You won't start a debate with me over her, because I think she's a drama queen who elevates her struggles in life to imply that she is a victim more than she really has been, and demands "better-than" rights. I don't like people like that - but especially women like that because I have to live with the stigma women like that create. And personally, I don't deserve it.
Atlanta has elected and named all kinds of highways after people simply for their skin color. MLK deserved his honors, but, In my opinion, Andrew Jackson and Cynthia McKinney did not. And why people like you mistake skin color as a character flaw. Liberals do it too, but in reverse. And I like it no more than when conservatives do it.
We should judge a person's character and actions (like God would do if he exists :), and not their skin color, gender or traits they cannot control. And not just you, but also those who defend ANY black person, ANY women, ANY Christian, or ANY whatever simply because that person matches their own skin color, gender, religion, or whatever. But no one will listen to me. Why? Because women like Cynthia McKinney have made me inconsequential.

Oh, by the way, I have an interview next week to teach architecture at a 'career academy' (some joint venture between the school district where I went to school, which is way cooler than where I've been teaching, and a local technology college). Keep your fingers crossed for me, I really don't want to go work for another architecture firm.

I try to do that in my own way. For example, you got your fine upstanding Americans who happen to be of African ancestry and you got your American Negroes. They are not the same and I don't treat them the same. "Buckwheat" McKinney is the latter and for the sake of the former needs to be differentiated and ridiculed at every opportunity.
But no one will listen to me. Why? Because women like Cynthia McKinney have made me inconsequential.
You give that stupid bitch too much credit. She in no way impacts on the women who do not defend her. On the other hand the Donk party is full of black and white American Negroes and you are known by the company you keep...or vote for.

But do you really think ridicule does anything, but entrench people further in their own opposition to what you are saying?
It was after all an exchange of kindness between us that stopped the name calling. I think you have to ask yourself why that got through, and let me consider what you were saying than any of your prior derision.
You give that stupid bitch too much credit.
I give her enough credit to have gotten herself elected. No one is 100% bad. It is tough to be a black woman in the South. So, I know that she does have that obsticle. BUT, I think that she uses it as a crutch and an opportunity, and that I do not respect.

Oh come on, it's not like we have many options. We have two flavors of vanilla in American politics - one side that uses immitation vanilla extract and the other than uses Tahitian vanilla beans. We need more options. You can't tell me the Republican party represents you. They are taking your tax dollars too. They've gotten out of control on spending, and forced many to move left to stay close to the center. I am ashamed of what our 'representatives' have become, on both sides of the fence. I'm voting for competent Independents this year. I see no viable alternative. Do you?

Not to mention all those ultra hot Latin chicks and Hollywood whores begging for a personal audience (if you know what I mean) and congressional Democrats looking for favors and introductions to the afore mentioned hot Latin chicks and Hollywood whores. Add to that the fact that he gets to hang out wearing those very cool jungle revolutionary fatigues complete with 24k Colt 1911 in an alligator holster and shoot anyone he wants and you have the making for a very good life.
Of course he's going to burn in hell for eternity but what's that compared to having Spike Lee make a movie about you?
April 25th, 2006 at 3:59 pmImperious leader who is feared by all
You really don't want everyone to fear you. In fact, I suspect that you're "nice" to me because I don't. Maybe even you fear me (down boy, it's a joke ).
and whose every wish is someone’s command.
Yeah, I just don't get that. I was not cut out for that kind of extremely lavish lifestyle. I'm uncomfortable having other people wait on me under subservient conditions. I really don't like it when "wait staff" who are older than me act in deference. I was raised that young people should respect their elders. So when a woman twice my age wants to serve me, I get very uncomfortable. Just not right.
Admired by every mass murdering thug in the world as the guy who made John F. Kennedy blink
Okay, now that part I get. :) So, you make some people around here more than blink. I mean Judd did keep you away from Tom Daschle. And well, Judd is the Kennedy of T.P. after all...

I didn't think you were into slutty women. Besides, wouldn't all that guilt give you a stroke or something?

You are too funny. I'm still deeply amused by that comment where you double spaced your letters and said you were gonna t y p e r e a l s l o w. You seriously crack me up.

Obviously you have no fashion sense. Didn't your ex-wife do anything? I would figure that's a minor perk to actually owning a man (i.e. marriage) - getting to buy his clothes.

For being an Atheist? Well, I'm sure he has no worries. Catholics (which I think he used to be) believe that it's your actions in life and not your beliefs that are judged, so if there is a God, it doesn't matter so much. In fact, one of my friends told me that the priest at his church gave a homily on this very subject not so long ago and he had to let me know (and since Catholicism was the original Christian faith, I'm gonna guess they have some precedent on this matter). Just in case I was worried, I suppose. I'm not, as you know. And I'm assuming that neither is Castro. As you already said, some things are worth the conequences and the risks ; )

All that fancy clothes stuff ended for me in the 80s. I'm back to blue jeans, sneakers and Polo shirts and have been for years. Right now I'm very fashionable in my kaki Izod shorts, ($12 @ Sam's)Ralph Lauren button down short sleeve ($260/dozen on Ebay) and last year's running sneakers. You can wear shorts to work? I can't. Not that I would. I already get hit on enough in long skirts.
I buy stuff at Target and then sew beads or lace on it to make it look expensive. My suits are designer names, but from Macy's major discount sales plus a coupon. I refuse to pay full price.

I don't see how he brings anything here that needs to be discussed, it's 100% spin, hostile, lousy spin, and it intends to hurt people. And you bear part of the blame for that with your attitude, whether or not you think there is an objective morality or not.

Paul, grow up and mind your own business.
You might find that if you are nice to people, they are nice back. Stop blaming the world for your problems and take responsibility for yourself.
If you don't like his posts, don't read them. As long as we support free speech, there will be those voices you don't like. Deal with it. I don't control his behavior anymore than I control yours. And yet he is nice to me. Why? I'm nice to him.
Seriously, go find something else to do that's productive. You won't change anyone's mind with bullying or guilt. Especially mine.
