Bush Rides Roughshod Over Protected Federal Land

Yesterday, President Bush joked about his difficult bike ride through the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument:

I just spent some quality time in [Congresswoman Mary Bono’s] district, and I forgot to tell you that I had the privilege of riding my mountain bike in the desert, as well. The national monument that she helped put together to preserve open spaces – she’s got a lot of humility, she didn’t name the national monument after herself. If I were to name it I would say, Really Hard Bike Ride Monument.

But the Palm Springs Desert Sun reported that by riding through the area, Bush had ignored the “voluntary avoidance” guidelines at the Monument. The guidelines are meant to protect a species of endangered bighorn sheep:

Jim Foote, acting manager of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, said the Clara Burgess trail is also among those monument managers ask people to avoid part of the year to prevent disrupting endangered Peninsular bighorn sheep.

The trail is one of about 10 in the monument under a “voluntary avoidance” program. People are asked to stay off the Clara Burgess trail from Jan. 1 to June 30 during the sheep lambing season, he said.

If this latest Bush bike ride was like his others, a “massive entourage,” including a “long convoy of SUVs and off-road vehicles,” came along for the ride.

Apparently the White House isn’t involved in the Bureau of Land Management’s “comprehensive, multi-agency planning effort … to ensure the survival of the sheep.”

Just have Cheney and Bush spending quality time in the same national park. Every one with its favourite amusement tool: Cheney with its shotgun, and Bush with its bicycle. And let’s wait for news, and who returns from the country trip, after Bush crashes with Cheney and Cheney unadvisedly shots his friend. Something like the Thunderdome in Mad Max 3: “Two enter, one exits”…

wha?? Your little rant makes no sense… 1) There have always been consequences to a person not paying taxes, and 2) The tax code has been expanded over the years, by both Republican and Democrat administrations: History of the U.S. Tax System

Here is an article that explains “frivolous arguments” in regards to filing taxes: IRS Rebuts Those Making Frivolous Arguments on Paying Taxes -follow the link to “The Truth About Frivolous Arguments”.

  59. squegeeboo says:

#58 There have always been consequences to a person not paying taxes

So then it isn’t voluntary. You can’t argue it both ways.

voluntary-Done or undertaken of one’s own free will
Acting or done willingly and without constraint or expectation of reward
Normally controlled by or subject to individual volition

If your penalized for not doing something it stops being voluntary. See above definitions.

    Not true.

For example… you have a choice whether or not you put your finger in the electrical outlet or not. If you chose to do so, you get shocked. That’s a negative consequence (at least, I hope you consider it negative :). It doesn’t make sticking your finger in the outlet not manditory becaue there are consequences. In life there are choices and consequences. Capisce?

And again you fail to understand that it is not me who is arguing it (just like with our discussion on freedom of speech). I am telling you what Congress, the IRS, etc. have said over the years. Please follow the link to the frivolous claims and read the IRS’ official statements on voluntary filing.

    Great comment!!

  63. squegeeboo says:

#61 Why do you refuse to follow the links and read? Do you think I include them because they look “cool”?

    you mean you don’t?

There, I posted a link with my definitions this time, and included the accepted law defintion that applies also

    http://www.answers.com/voluntary&r=67
    1. voluntary-Done or undertaken of one’s own free will
    2. Acting or done willingly and without constraint or expectation of reward
    3. Normally controlled by or subject to individual volition
    Law
    4. Without legal obligation or consideration

If you are penalized for doing/not doing something then it alters your decision making process towards an action(invalidates defintion 1), if you are penalized for doing/not doing something it means your are doing it with constraints (invalidates definition 2)
You have legal obligations towards taxes, invalidates definition 4

The third definition falls into unbelievables views on it, thats it’s all free will.

So basically, 3 out of 4, including the law definition claim taxes arn’t voluntary. If we use your links, we get two different gov’t views on it. One that it is voluntary, one that it isn’t.

“I am telling you what Congress, the IRS, etc. have said over the years.”
So your telling me the gov’t is contradictory and confusing. Sounds about right.

He becomes more juvenile every day, his lack of self esteem is glaringly apparent as he searches to complement others in the hopes he will receive one in return… pathetic…

If ewe think for one moment I will stand idly by as this clown tries to shepherd along his crook agendas, and fleece future generations of Americans of their right to a healthy pasture……. well,……….. I don’t think so…
To ram an illegal war down our throats, and lambast honest patriots as he tries to foist his woolly thinking about what a secure America means is shear effrontery to the mindful (68%) majority of sentient people in this country.

::Sigh:: You still haven’t read the IRS’ “Truth About Frivolous Arguments”. It is voluntary inasmuch as you choose when to file, and you are on your own when it comes to determining how much you owe. In other countries these are not voluntary, they are compulsory and taxes are taken out of your paycheck -no need to file.

This also fits the definition of voluntary: “Capable of making choices; having the faculty of will”, or “Done deliberately; intentional”. Of course there will be consequences if you don’t pay taxes; I cannot believe I am arguing semantics with you.

You are being contrarian for the sake of being it.

So your telling me the gov’t is contradictory and confusing. Sounds about right.

We can easily agree on this one. Specially when it comes to the tax code.

I am not sure what you are trying to prove to yourself with this line of argument -if taxes were so abhorrent for conservatives, no Republican administration would have expanded or otherwise modified the tax code; they would have simply got rid of it.

The tax code is messy and complex thanks to contributions from both parties.

just found this in my email…wanted to share (i may post in another thread also, since it’s so late)

While suturing a cut on the hand of an old Texas rancher, whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to former Texas Gov. George W. Bush and his elevation to the White House.

The old Texan said, “Well, ya know, Bush is a ‘post turtle’.” Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a ‘post turtle’ was. The old rancher said, “When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a post turtle.”

The old man saw a puzzled look on the doctor’s face, so he continued to explain. “You know he didn’t get there by himself, you know he doesn’t belong there, he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there, and you just want to help the dumb shit get down.”
