Snow gets demanding.

By Nico Pitney on Apr 25th, 2006 at 2:34 pm

Snow gets demanding.

Prospective White House Press Secretary Tony Snow has reportedly “asked for guaranteed access to the president’s ear and to an unusually large degree of latitude to reconfigure the WH press operation. … Snow, not content to be a herald, also wants near-complete control over what he says from the podium, be it bromides, platitudes or substance.”

UPDATE: “Tomorrow, Republicans close to the White House expect Pres. Bush to formally name Tony Snow as his new press secretary.”

Unka Karl doesn’t like such uppity ways, Tony. Don’t quit your day job.

  2. Citizen80203 says:

Classic, Bush has no more capital if a second rate talk show host is demanding concessions for coming to work.

  3. Wayne says:

    hahahahahahaha

best laugh I had all day

  4. GSD says:

Tony Snow has demanded that the now shuttered Gannon Massage and Reacharound Parlor be reopened forwith.

  5. Preznit Pinhead says:

I’ll bet they’re now wishing they’d offered the job to Jeff Gannon Guckert instead of Toady Snow.

  6. Wayne A. Schneider says:

I think this is his way of turning down the job. He can say he didn’t want it because they wouldn’t do what he thought necessary. What he is asking for sounds like the job of the White House Communications Director. And since their current one isn’t facing any indictments, that job isn’t available. I’m betting that Snow tells them, “No, thanks.”

  7. Zimzone says:

Tony Snow is a lying piece of shit.
I hope he does get the job.
I can’t wait until he goes beserk
on the podium trying to explain to
the American people that black is
white and white is a spattered yellow.

  8. kindness says:

So Tony thinks spreading bullshit is gonna be different in one form over another?

Yea, there’s the best & the brightest for ya.

  9. s says:

Tony may be a lying piece of shit….but here’s a thought. Perhaps even he knows that Scott McClellan was totally controlled by the White House and maybe he doesn’t want to become just a cog. He might, who knows, might just be beginning to smell the demise of this administration and not want to have to cover for them as they go down….he after all has to look out for his own futuer.

  10. Badmoodman says:

Snow has to take the job, lest he incur a nasty pet name from Bush: Snowflake. (’Snowie’ will be immediate and inane.) The administration will hope Snow’s press briefings are no more informative than McClellan’s, thereby leaving the press corps, ‘Snowbored.’

  11. barfly says:

The way Tony Snow runs his mouth off, I hope he takes the job. I’ve seen him in action (on television) and he doesn’t have the self control to mindlessly spew the same points – if reporters push him, he’ll get snippy, and say something over-the-top. I can’t wait.

  12. Marie says:

Snow is an obnoxious, experienced propagandist, but his ego may cause friction with the Boy King. He is accustomed to being the “star” and this job will reduce him to being a toady spokesman. This might be entertaining to watch.

  13. Punchy says:

Snow is an ASS, pure and simple. Arrogant and pompous beyond belief. What he’s basically asking for is to have the “right” to spew forth Faux News lies day in and out, which is what he does right now. He wants the ability to lie, twist words, and probably intimidate journalists…. I say bring him on. Watch the real journalists eat him up.

  14. Zimzone says:

Have you ever listened to Tony Snowjob?
He has a face made for radio and a voice
that sounds like one of those old 33 1/3 LP’s
that were scratched beyond listening levels.

Maybe if he borrows enough Oxy from Druggie
Limblow he can get through the first week, but
the press corps is actually starting to ask
    some meaningful questions!

This is going to be better than anything networks
    call comedy…enjoy.

  15. blindprogressive says:

If I were Tony I’d be making demands as well. Who wants to be a spokesperson for one of the country’s most unpopular presidents. Its pretty damn funny that they offered the job to a Fox News guy. It also says alot that CNN’s Victoria Clark pretty much said “hell no” if it were offerred to her.

  16. GSD says:

Apparently Josef Goebbels turned down the offer.

    -GSD

  17. ElectricBassPlayer says:

“Snow, not content to be a herald, also wants near-complete control over what he says from the podium, be it bromides, platitudes or substance.”

So he wants freedom of action to basically say whatever he wants. Instead of getting caught sounding mealy-mouthed like Scott McClellan, who was encumbered by trying to reconcile Bush’s theo-psychedelic inner circle fantasy world with the ugly realities of the consequences of Bush administration policy, Snow wants to be able to take the FOX approach and unapologetically bullshit, lie, intimidate, or whatever else is required to make sure Jesus and Bush destroy liberalism and dissent and messy democracy and all that hippy stuff.

  18. Matt O. says:

Who knew Tony Snow was such a diva?

  19. Nuremburg says:

    yech. *holding nose*

the stink in this country gets worse every day.

  20. TSop says:

The guy already knows he is going to have to lie and lie some more, so he wants to be sure that he can lie so that he is not indicted.

  21. Chris says:

    #9 – I think you misspelt “Führer”

I heard he also wants a bowl full of only the blue M&Ms, a bottle of Jack and Cheese Whiz in the prep room.

  24. Hardy Haberman says:

Who cares who Bush and his bunch have a press secretary, they will lie, just like Scotty and Ari. The Bush propaganda machine is incapable of telling the truth.

Meanwhile the Shoshone Tribe is suing to stop Divine Strake, the simulated nuclear blast in Nevada scheduled for June.

  25. War4Sale says:

You know things are really, really bad when Dumbya gets pushback from a talking head on Fox!

  26. Fletch says:

I’m pretty sure that Snow will try to get the press conferences to no longer be video taped. That’s step 1. Step 2 ….?

#14 – Have you ever listened to Tony Snowjob?
    Comment by Zimzone

No, but thank you for taking one for the team.

Note to Georgie: Please, please pick this guy.

  28. Matt O. says:

One of my worries about Snow working for the White House is that it would mean an even-more concerted effort to use FOX News as the propaganda arm of the Bush White House.

Together they would craft ways to sway public opinion through the use of disinformation, rather than independently try to do that, with FOX News following the lead of the White House.

Now they can coordinate through their intermediary – Tony Snow.

  29. Edward Deevy says:

It’s one thing to be peddling propaganda on a radio mike or having a cozy discussion with a group of Fix wingnuts…but it is something different to have to deal with a few real journalists. I believe Snow will have even less credibility than Scotty.

  31. Badmoodman says:

I’m hoping Tony Snow performs his duties as well as Josh Lyman’s infamous one press briefing stint; “Yeah, the President has a secret plan to fight inflation.”

  32. sohei says:

I give this guy two weeks before he goes all Rush Limbaugh on ESPN and is forced to resign. These loudmouth jerks need guys like Rove to regulate them, since they assume 90% of America shares their insane warped views of reality.

  33. jurassicpork says:

I can just see it now. Every press conference over which he’ll preside will be called a “Snow job.”

Anyway, here’s another stupid Q&A, which is a sneaky way to get other people to write my blog for me.

Today’s question: What are the Top Ten Suggestions in the White House Suggestion box?

  34. JIMBO says:

I’d like to see Tony get asked a real question by St. Helen Thomas. He’ll probably spew over the fact that he can be had by a classy intelligent old broad.

  35. Jim from L.A. says:

It certainly was convenient that the White House was able to select from an entire network of experienced Bush spokespersons, true one stop shopping.

It must have been a difficult job to select the most enthusiastic syncophant. I suspect it was hard work.

  36. anonymous says:

The White House is brilliant in its Machiavellian ways.

The problem for the White House today is that the public has noticed its policy failures, and the press has noticed that they’ve noticed. This storyline is infecting all other storylines–every article on Iran mentions that Iraq is a failure and the American people think we need to leave.

The Administration’s media management techniques no longer work. The press corps has begun to adjust to the Administration’s “stonewall and lie” media management techniques which were, until Katrina, phenomenally successful.

The White House has one goal in mind: keep control through the next Congress. To do that, they need to neutralize the Press Corps. How to do that? Give them something new to talk about. Give them something new to focus on. Press Secretary Tony Snow. What a shakeup! What is the Administration thinking? My god, Tony Snow is so different from the other Press Secretaries we’ve seen. The administration isn’t the guys we thought they were. This Administration we thought we knew would never hire Tony Snow–we must have it all wrong! We don’t know what we thought we knew, becuase the White House we knew would never have done something like this! But this is so different! We are back to a blank slate–tell us what this administration really is!

Substantively, it is a huge shakeup–but only in the communications office. The rest of government will remain almost completely untouched. But that doesn’t matter, because the Bush Administration doesn’t want to change anything but perceptions. The reality is that day-to-day, the press office doesn’t interact with the rest of government–they deal with communications. Seriosuly, do you think the press corps could tell you what was different between the way Tommy Thompson ran HHS and the way Mike Leavitt does?

But you overhaul the press office, and they’ll feel in their gut like there’s been a huge change. And it’s hard to disagree with what your gut is telling you, especially when you’re a rushed reporter on deadline.

They’re evil, but they’re not stupid. They know who Tony Snow is better than any of us do. Tony Snow makes it possible for the Bush Administration to change the storyline. It’s pure media management. And it’s all about the ‘06 midterms.

  37. dave says:

dont you think fox wants snow to get this job — he’ll only call on the fox press people and let them say/do whatevery they want. i suspect he’ll be on several payrolls. big signing bonus from fox!

  38. unka karl says:

aha! eureka! i got it, again:
we’ll get rid of scotty and put a foxy at the podium, and have him say that he won”t take no cripe and be a shill for us….perfect…we’ll get our base back (let’s face it, they’re glued to fox news), and all the while, they’ll think that THEY made a difference with us! yep. that’s why i get paid the big bucks.
oh, and i almost forgot- the lefties will think it’s a bad move and get a big laugh- thinking we are stupid enough to put some second rate talk show host on our team. i say it’s perfect!
    whatya say, Dick?
    (snarl)

  39. Bruce Gorton says:

I hate to say this, but Mr Snow is starting to grow on me.

    Comment by Bruce Gorton
#39…when things begin to grow on you, you may want to
move around a little more…Fox News, Tony Snow & the
White House are like those cultures we grew in Petri
dishes in HS Biology. Things grew, allright, but it was not
anything you’d care to have growing on you.
Tony Snow is a lying piece of SHIT!

  41. Bruce Gorton says:

    Zimzone

Think about it for a minute, McClellan for all his faults was an expert bulshitter, this guy just isn’t all that good.

Also, to put it frankly, the one or two people still stupid enough to believe Fox News is not a Republican Propaganda clearing house get to feel even dumber then usual.

Further, “Snowjob” is just begging to be made into a T-Shirt. In fact, “Snowjob” is a pretty good description of the Republican government.

  42. LanceThruster says:

Prepare to be “Snowblind.” Maybe his nickname should be “Iceberg” because it looks as if all that is happening is the rearranging of the deck chairs on the Titanic. I wonder if his first move will be to try to dazzle us with brilliance of baffle us with bush*t?

  43. Property of a Lady » My take on Tony Snow says:

[...] Snow negotiated a much higher level of acess to the President than press secretaries normally have; much more than Puffy McMoonface had. So, if Snow lies to the press, we’ll know he’s lying, not misinformed or out of the loop. (Good for us!) And, we already know that Tony is a mendacious sort, which is sort of a nice cushion; we don’t have to wonder. [...]
