Queen Karl is worried? That’s a new one. Wonder how they’ll spin this development?

Personally, I think he should be choosing the wallpaper and other related furnishings for his jail cell.

But, Karls lawyers who are paid to be his advocates say that he hasn’t recieved any target letters! Noron O’Donnell said that Karl Rove was seen at a cocktail party and he was smiling! George W. Bush promised that he would fire the leaker…check that..He said he would fire anyone convicted of a crime.

Shorter Bush: “Karl is my security blanky…I can’t be without him!”

i want to be happy, but, i KNOW there will merely be two post-indictment, pre-trial presidential pardons, as with reagan and weinberger…

bush has nothing to lose and can’t get more unpopular… republicans wanting to get elected will sacrafice bush and add to the clamour once the pardons are announced.

the good guys will never win…

    oh well.

  16. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    ThinkProgress,

Could you please refresh our memory about all the statements that President Bush made regarding the leak that led to this investigation? I think we should be clear on whether or not the president said he would fire anyone “connected to”, “involved with”, or “convicted for” this leak. (Wich was it?) We want to be sure that we can force the president to get rid of Rove if that is what he promised. Clearly, Rove was “involved”, but was that the threshold the president gave for firing him? We also want to be sure that he can’t weasel out of it with the idea that what Karl revealed wasn’t classified because the president declassified it, so what he said about firing people who leak classified information doesn’t apply.

  17. james risser says:

    (1) on September 23, 2003, stating that ‘[t]here’s just too many leaks. And if there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is. And if the person has violated law, the person will be taken care of. And so I welcome the investigation….I want to know the truth. If anybody has got any information inside our administration or outside our administration, it would be helpful if they came forward with the information so we can find out whether or not these allegations are true and get on about the business….And we can clarify this thing very quickly if people who have got solid evidence would come forward and speak out. And I would hope they would’ ;

    (2) on October 7, 2003, stating that ‘[t]his is a town of—where a lot of people leak. And I’ve constantly expressed my displeasure with leaks, particularly leaks of classified information. And I want to know, I want to know the truth. I want to see to it that the truth prevail. …. And they’ll come to the bottom of this, and we’ll find out the truth. And that will be—that’s a good thing for this administration….I mean this town is a—is a town full of people who like to leak information. And I don’t know if we’re going to find out the senior administration official. Now, this is a large administration, and there’s a lot of senior officials. I don’t have any idea. I’d like to. I want to know the truth. That’s why I’ve instructed this staff of mine to cooperate fully with the investigators—full disclosure, everything we know the investigators will find out. I have no idea whether we’ll find out who the leaker is—partially because, in all due respect to your profession, you do a very good job of protecting the leakers. But we’ll find out.’ ;

    (3) on October 23, 2003, in responding to a question about the investigation of the leak: ‘It’s a criminal investigation. It is an important investigation. I’d like to know if somebody in my White House did leak sensitive information. As you know, I’ve been outspoken on leaks. And whether they happened in the White House, or happened in the administration, or happened on Capitol Hill, it is a—they can be very damaging. And so this investigation is ongoing and—by professionals who do this for a living, and I hope they—I’d like to know.’ ;

    (4) on July 18, 2005, stated that ‘I would like this to end as quickly as possible. If someone committed a crime, they will no longer work in my administration.’;

    (5) on March 11, 2006, stated that ‘[t]his is a very serious matter, and our administration takes it seriously. … I’d like to know who leaked, and if anybody has got any information inside our government or outside our government who leaked, you ought to take it to the Justice Department so we can find out the leaker. ...We’re talking about a criminal action, but also hopefully will help set a clear signal we expect other leaks to stop, as well. And so I look forward to finding the truth.’;

  18. rail says:

Awww, the big bad gwand juwy was mean to wittle Karl?
He’s just started worrying NOW? What crap; this announcement is purely meant to curry sympathy for the turd-ster. I wouldn’t generalize this to all potential criminal charges, but for a charge like perjury or other violation involving moral turpitude, why would you worry if you didn’t do it? For perjury, either ya lied to the investigating authories/grand jury or you didn’t; your statements either match (with or without explanation) or they don’t.
As a result, his claim of fear of a criminal charge is tantamount to a confession, to me.

  19. British Gary says:

#8, G.W.SuperChrist, yeah, I was referring to the inevitable back-patting sycophants who are going to emerge in Rove’s defence. I wonder how long it will be before BBC shows Snow, “you know I can’t comment on ongoing investigations but I can assure you all that Karl Rove has the full support of the President” this bit’s the truth, followed by “Karl is a valued member of the Administration who has served his Country tirelessly in the defence of this great nation. He is a trustworthy, honest man of integrity who will continue his vital work in the fight against terror”.

You’ll have to excuse me now as I’m going to kiss the U-bend……

  23. Gregor Samsa says:

On a funny note, The Onion published this back in February:

“Tonight, by executive order, I am creating a permanent department with a vital mission: to ensure that the political scandals, underhanded dealings, and outright criminal activities of this administration are handled in a professional and orderly fashion,” Bush said.
The centerpiece of Bush’s plan is the Department Of Corruption, Bribery, And Incompetence, which will centralize duties now dispersed throughout the entire D.C.-area political establishment.
The Scandal Secretary will log all wiretaps and complaints of prisoner abuse, coordinate paid-propaganda efforts, eliminate redundant payoffs and bribes, oversee the appointment of unqualified political donors to head watchdog agencies, control all leaks and other high-level security breaches, and oversee the disappearance of Iraq reconstruction funds. He will also be responsible for issuing all official denials that laws have been broken.

  25. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    #17 Thanks, James,

Now we know from the president’s own mouth that if Karl Rove committed a crime, he will no longer be a part of the administration. I would be surprised if that was what he meant to say, but that’s the standard we should hold him to.

  26. james risser says:

    #25, you’re welcome!

but, please see #14… i really think that will happen…there is really no downside for bush in doing so.

  27. Wayne A. Schneider says:

#26 I agree that this is a possibility. But if he issues those two pardons any time before November 2008, the Republicans can kiss the rest of their seats in both Houses of Congress goodbye. By now, the public knows that they did something illegal, even if it was lying to the grand jury to cover up what really happened. Pardoning them would be inexcusable. Constitutional, yes, but still inexcusable.

  28. Hardy Haberman says:

Karl’s atorney said the session with the grand jury was hell. Hummm? I thought Karl ruled Hell, he should have felt right at home.

  29. cats are flyfishn says:

Bush can’t pardon until Scooter and Traitor Rove get convicted. I’m not sure if Scooter has a trial date yet and Traitor Rove still needs the indictment before he can get a trial date. It is soon to be May and elections are just 6 months away… Bush the anti-Christ and Devil Cheney will be way too focused on thier own butts to worry about pardoning Scooter the Tooter and Traitor Rove after the November elections.

  30. cats are flyfishn says:

  33. james risser says:

bush has to wait until conviction:
NO. A simple indictment is enough. Reagan did it most recently for Cap Weinberger, post-indictment and pre-trial.

    bush would hurt the republicans:
MAYBE NOT. they could come out afterward and go against bush and solidfy their personal campaigns with a ‘bush went too far…’ argument and DISTANCE themselves from him.

  34. G.W.SuperChrist says:

Does anyone wonder why Rove’s lawyers would want to put out the word that Rove is “more worried.”

Why wouldn’t they just not comment?

How would putting this message out benefit Rove?

Seems awfully suspicious to me… anyone else?

Karl knows he will be indicted he just doesn’t know what to do or how to stop it.
With all the bad talk about Patrick Fitzgerald and looking down on him well all I have to say for Fitz is ” How you like me now”. Chris Matthews made hurtfull jokes about Fitzgerald but now he is lossing his second job of spin for the GOP. They’ll all be indicted on nothing less then lying to the grand jury.

  42. Seixon says:

Sounds kind of like what they said LAST WEEK.

They didn’t get the indictment that Friday… repeat the same info and hope for one this Friday!

If Fitzgerald indicts Rove for “forgetting” his conversation with Cooper, he’s going to have to also indict Unnamed Government Official for “forgetting” his conversation with Woodward.

For that reason, unless Fitzgerald is a complete nutjob, Rove is not going to be indicted.

  43. JPark says:

Wow, Seixon, a whole week? Do you know how patient Fitz was with George Ryan. Be very f%!cking afraid. Your network of losers will go down.

  45. Wayne A. Schneider says:

#34 james, correct but with a slight correction,

It is true that the president can issue a pardon without a conviction or even an indictment. President Nixon wasn’t under indictment when President Ford issued him a pardon. The Constitution does not specify any prosecutorial status on the recipient of the pardon. And it was President George H.W. Bush who pardoned Caspar Weinberger after the latter was indicted for his role in the Iran-Contra affair because, according to the president, “it would have cost him around two million dollars to defend himself.” The fact that the man was very likely guilty played no part in the president’s decision. And I’m sure that it was another coincidence that while former president Bush frequently denied knowing anything about the Affair and always claimed to be “out of the loop”, in his memoirs he wrote that he was probably one of the few people who knew everything that was going on while it was happening. So it’s clear to me where the current president learned how to respect the truth.

I want to believe that what goes around comes around; however, if that was the case, GWB would be managing a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant right now.

  47. Daniel DiRito says:

‘Twas the night before Fitzmas, and all through D.C.
The Senate stood empty, just waiting to see.
The Grand Jury listened to Fitz with much care,
He hoped that the votes all would be there.

Ken Mehlman and Rover all snug in their beds,
While visions of November danced in their heads,
And Dick in his bunker, as “W” did sip,
A drink from the flask he poured through his lips.

When out at the Post arose such a clatter,
They sprung from their cubes to see what was the matter.
Away to the phones they flew like a flash,
Called up their sources who asked for some cash.

The Times of New York had the lights all aglow,
As they savored the scuttle they knew soon would flow.
When, what to their wondering eyes should appear,
But a signature sheet with twelve names written so clear.

With Old Crow in his throat, George W then spits,
He knew in an instant it must be the Fitz.
More rapid he guzzled, his Party might lose,
So he bristled and shouted while chugging his booze.

    Now Karl! First Libby!
    Damn Fitz you vixen!
    Lost Browny then Scotty!
    Who else are you fixin’
    To topple from power!
    We’re takin’ a lickin!
    Now damn Fitzy, damn you!
    Damn you this hour!

If not for those levees and Katrina’s wrath,
Dear God, why all these obstacles, who chose her path?
You live in the big house, but the White House is blue,
What else can go wrong, will Dick Cheney go too?

And then in a tantrum, he ran to the roof,
The stomping and kicking of each little hoof.
As he pulled out his hair and was turning around,
Up through the hatch big Barbara came with a bound.

In blue robe with white dots, from her head to her toes,
Yes her clothes were old fashioned, but everyone knows.
A bag of buckshot she held in her hand,
Then she told him that Karl could not take the stand.

His jaw how it twitched, his chin to and fro,
His cheeks were like roses, his nose white from blow!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
She pulled on his ear…you’re back on the snow!
The shaft of a pen he held tight in his fist,
And the smoke it encircled, man was he pissed.
He made a mad face, then reached for the lead,
He shook it and scowled, I wish he were dead.

Righteous and pompous, a nasty old soul,
She slapped him and said, pull Cheney from the hole.
A wink of his eye and a grin on his face,
Soon Fitz he would show that he should stay in his place.

He spoke not a word but went straight to his work,
And filled all the shotguns, then turned with a jerk,
And with shaking fingers, he dialed the phone,
Dick Cheney I need you, he said with a groan.

Dick called for his chopper, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight,

Happy Fitzmas to all and we’ll get him tonight!

  49. Seixon says:

    Ryan,

And if there’s an indictment next week, will you apologize there Goebbels?

No, because that would mean that Shuster and MSNBC were hyping it way too early. Kind of like how Scott Ritter kept saying that the US was going to bomb Iran, and it still hasn’t happened. You can’t just keep telling the same fairytale over and over and hope that it eventually turns out true. That’s just dishonest. I’m Goebbels? Yeah, and MSNBC who keeps telling you lies isn’t, I suppose… LOL.

Is that the ‘rule’ of the Fascist propagandist? That you and not the grand jury decides what is indictable? Wow, you sure are an arrogant little stupid twirp.

Ryan, can you respond to anything I say without the uncalled for rhetoric? I’m arrogant for suggesting that if Rove gets indicted, then UGO should get indicted for doing the exact same thing? Wow. Same crime, but Rove should be indicted but not the other guy? Why? Double standard?

For someone who CLAIMS to be an independent, you sound consistently like the most radical, fringe, and STUPID Kool-Aid Cracked in the head republicans out there. Maybe you’ve gotten brain freeze living in Norway, or maybe you were ALWAYS retarded. Whatever the case, you’re an embarrassment to the human race. You sound like a STUPID LITTLE BOY, grow up son, and pull your head out of your a@@.

So I’m a crackhead because I think that two different people who did the exact same thing should get the same treatment under the law? Wow, I’m speechless.

Ryan, you continue to show how immature and hopelessly partisan you are. Anyone who says anything that isn’t pre-approved by Think Progress gets buried in a ton of ad hominem and smears.

I’m thinking it is about time TP banned you, because you can’t respond to anyone without personally attacking them.

    JPark,

Wow, Seixon, a whole week? Do you know how patient Fitz was with George Ryan. Be very f%!cking afraid. Your network of losers will go down.

Ehm, you do know that this investigation has gone on for almost 3 years now, right? How long did the investigation including Ryan go on before he was indicted? From cursory reading, the investigation involving Ryan involved almost 60 people who were not only indicted but convicted. This investigation involves the indictment of ONE person so far, after almost 3 years.

Look, the media told us Rove was going to be indicted almost a month ago. Then they told us it was going to happen last Friday. Now they are saying it might happen this Friday. If it doesn’t happen, they will say it is happening next Friday. How many times are they allowed to get it wrong before we figure out what’s going on?

They even thought Rove would get indicted back when Libby got indicted.

If they’re not going to indict Armitage, there’s no reason why they should indict Rove for doing the same thing – “forgetting” a conversation with a reporter.
