Colbert to Kristol: “How Is The New American Century?”»

Last night of the Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert sliced and diced prominent neo-conservative Bill Kristol on the Project For the New American Century, Iraq and Iran. Watch an excerpt:

Our favorite part:

COLBERT: How’s the New American Century? Looks good to me, right?

KRISTOL: I think it, I…I’m speechless.

COLBERT: Really?

KRISTOL: Yeah, we’ve sort of, the Project for a New American Century, we’re one of the few people…

COLBERT: Come on, it’s a terrific New American Century, right?

KRISTOL: Well, I think we’re doing ok.

We’ve posted the full transcript of the clip HERE.

  1. Jane E. Schneider Says:

Colbert had Kristol so flustered, he had to fumble for a response! As soon as Stephen mentioned PNAC, Kristol’s face got a bit redder than usual - I don’t think that any reporter/pundit has gone straight to the point like that. It was great!

  2. unbelievable Says:

As good as the time that Michael Moore cleaned the floor with Bill O’Reilly in 2004.

We need more liberals with spines putting these guys on the spot.

  3. TerrytheTurtle Says:

Colbert missed a chance to skewer Kristol with the ‘but everyone thought that finishing it in 1991 was a bad idea, including Pappy Bush, what changed?’ approach, but otherwise he handed Kristol’s fascist ass to him….

COLBERT: Which dictator do we take down next?

  5. katy Says:

i was listening, but couldn’t watch - kristol just gives me the willies…
now i regret not watching, but i could hear that he was very nervous and taken aback…

it’s good that this group is coming to light more, but so many are still unaware of how this has been planned for so long… all duped…

  6. Krazny Says:

LOL I am soo gonna watch the replay of daily show and the colbert report at 8pm. This is too good too pass up.

  7. Zookeeper Says:

#6 - Me, too, Krazny, I missed it last night. I wonder if Kristol knew Colbert was making fun of him? Or that “The Colbert Report” is a parody show? He seems rather clueless in the transcript.

If it weren’t for those two reruns at 8:00, I don’t think I’d turn on the television anymore. Too bad there aren’t more intelligent shows like these. Though, last night, I had to wonder if Ed Helms might be next to host his own show… That guy has serious chutzpah.

  9. katy Says:

does anyone know if the d.c. function that colbert will be hosting this weekend will be recorded?
    THAT should be rich!

I think they don’t. Takes a sense of humor to understand satire, and the extreme right just doesn’t have one. They only laugh at tasteless jokes insulting minorities, cripples and foreigners.

It’s time to reclaim our democracy. ITMFA**holes now!

Stephen Colbert to Replace Michael Chertoff?

    By E&P Staff

    Published: April 27, 2006 11:50 PM ET

NEW YORK With Fox News commentator Tony Snow hired as White House press secretary, Comedy Central anchor man Stephen Colbert suggested late Thursday that President Bush add other conservative talk show hosts to his cabinet.

The host of The Colbert Report proposed posts for Rush LImbaugh and Sean Hannity, and pushed his hero, Bill O’Reilly, for new Pentagon chief. Bush could send off Donald Rumsfeld with “the Medal of Freedom,” he pointed out. The only problem with this is that O’Reilly would probably push for “an invasion of Vermont,” he mused.

Colbert then suggested that Bush tab him to replace Michael Chertoff as head of Homeland Security. Chertoff, he complained, “has not done a thing” to control the bear population. A running “joke” on the show is Colbert’s hatred of bears.

Earlier, Colbert had wondered, deadpan, if Snow would be able to handle the “radical” switch from Fox News to “apologist” for the president.

Colbert will be emcee at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington, D.C. on Saturday night. Among the guests will be Valerie Plame, Alex Trebeck and E&P’s own Joe Strupp.

#14 - …Kristol is a criminal Neocon who must either be arrested and/or deported to Israel and never allowed to return to the United States!

I was wondering about this recently. Whatever happened to using exile? Can we send the Bush Cabal and NeoCon ReichWing into exile? If so, how quickly?

  18. Krazny Says:

Can we exile Bush and company to Iraq? They can work on fixing the shit they broke.

  19. kindness Says:

Colbert is funny, but it took me a while to develop a taste for him. The way he parodies being a conservative and interviews as such, I sometimes forget he’s using sarcasm/satire and wonder which side of the street he believes in.

Surprisingly enough, I always enjoy Kristol when he goes on Jon Stewart’s Show. It always appears as if they both enjoy each other, even though they definitely represent different attitudes.

  20. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Everybody interested in catching the repeat of this, check your local listings for the afternoon repeats. It is possible (I’m not sure what their schedule is on Friday afternoons) that this episode is on either now or the next hour (2 PM-3 PM EST - Daily Show, Colbert Report repeats).
Otherwise it will be on Monday afternoon (try 2:30 PM EST) and Monday night (8:30 PM EST)

I’m glad that someone finally looked Kristol in the face and sarcastically asked (about PNAC), “How’s that Project coming?” Kristol looked like he really wasn’t sure if Colbert was being sarcastic, but Colbert stayed in character so Kristol acted like it was for real. I loved watching it.

  21. Jesus Christ God of WAR Says:

#18 - Can we exile Bush and company to Iraq? They can work on fixing the shit they broke.

    I like the idea. Alot!

Since Georgy Boy Bush wanted to desparately to be King, not only of America, but of Iraq too, I think it only fitting he go there and correct his mess in person. He’ll need to take the entire Bush Cabal with him! Oh, and don’t forget to load Kristol into the back of the plane when the Cabal ships out.

  22. Jeff Coleman Says:

I’ve heard Colbert a couple of times on “Fresh Air” and he’s always a warm, sincere, very level-headed guy. He’s deliberately playing a “high-status idiot” on his show, and from what I can tell, he’s pretty far away from most of the views his character espouses. Another refreshing thing is that he’s a practicing, believing Catholic who doesn’t have a problem poking fun at religion.

    Jeff Coleman

  23. wisedup Says:

all kristol’s answers can be sumed up in one word: “DUH”….

  24. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    #9 katy,

The White House Correspondents Dinner is tomorrow night, April 19th, at 8PM, and will be broadcast live on C-SPAN. You will have to check C-SPAN’s schedule to find when it will be re-broadcast, but I am guessing that the first time will be later that night. It is live and uncensored (at least the first time through).

    Everyone enjoy.

  25. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    Sorry typo. That should read:

Saturday, April 29th, 8 PM. Tomorrow night. Enjoy.

  26. katy Says:

jeff coleman - he was the original host of “this week in god” on the daily show - hilarious…

comedycentral.com also has videos archived - don’t have to wait for the repeats - but it’s only clips, not the whole show…

  27. mighty aphrodite Says:

Such fun watching those hilarious, spineless progressives discuss something they KNOW absolutley NOTHING about - American security - HA - HA ha, ha!!! The Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, Lucille Ball are ALMOST as funny as “Progs on Security”!

  28. Jane E. Schneider Says:

#9, Katy, I think that C-Span broadcasts the White House Press Corps dinner. I know that Wayne plans to watch it, I think it’s at 9 pm Eastern. C-Span will probably re-broadcast it off and on over the next month.

#22, Jeff Coleman: Didn’t you love when Colbert was doing the “This Week in God” segment on Jon Stewart?

  29. fnordboy Says:

Who’s the man? S. frickin Colbert, that’s who. The Colbert Report has just turned up the heat, and the Jon Stewart News Explosion is going to have to step it up if they want to compete.

  30. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

According to Comedy Central’s website, this episode is playing again TODAY at 2:30 PM EST and again tonight at 8:30 PM EST (while he is hosting the WHCD). Go get your TVs warmed up. Last night’s Daily Show precedes each of those two broadcasts.

  31. Quadrajet Says:

It was funnier than hell wasn’t it? Apparently Kristol isn’t hot on the idea of using nukes in Iran, telling Colbert that he wasn’t a ‘Nucleo-con’

  32. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

#28 I could be wrong, but I thought they said 8 PM. You know what folks? Plan on it starting at 8 PM, and if it’s actually later, cook yourself up some Freedom Fries and sit back and wait.

  34. Krazny Says:

I think the Colbert report is a “balance” to the Daily show. Frankly Stewart is very liberal/progressive and doesn’t hid it. Colbert makes fun of neo-cons by pretending to be so far right that he makes bush look lke a bleeding heart, tree hugging Liberal. It is a similar show but with a very different schtick. Frankly I think they are both very funny to watch. I don’t always like the Colbert show as much. I think Colbert needs to let his guests talk more.

  35. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid Says:

#27: good one. You realize 9/11 happened on Bush’ watch? He chose to ignore “Bin Laden Determined to Attack in United States.” I guess security to moronic Republicans means making no effort to stop the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history. How’s that for funny ??

  36. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

#30 I am confusing people, aren;t I. Obviously the re-broadcast tonight of last night’s Colbert Report won’t conflict with the WHCD because that’s tomorrow night.

  37. Badmoodman Says:

Colbert is funny, but it took me a while to develop a taste for him. - - I knew Stephen as a comic genius when he was at Northwestern Univ. With some of his guests, I’d rather hear him :). Sometimes I turn it off before it gets to that part. Even though it’s supposed to be satire, it can be like watching one of the real neo-cons.

I’m with you, I love the Daily Show. Jon Stewart is a funny, funny man. Sometimes I cry from laughing so hard. Just wish there was more of t.v. of that caliber, you know?

  44. Jay Randal Says:

When The Bush Regime collapses someday, then Americans can either put them on trial for treason. and imprison them, or send them all into exile! My choice would be to send the entire Bush family to Siberia, Russia, to farm potatoes for the rest of their damn lives! Cheney should be deported to Iraq, with Rumsfeld, and let the Iraqis decide what to do with them! Condi Rice I would send to Haiti > let her live in poverty for what she did to America!

  45. Badmoodman Says:

I think Colbert needs to let his guests talk more. - - It’s all part of the schtick. He runs roughshod over his guests like his mentor O’Reilly. And his guests are frequently stuttering stooges either unable to keep up with the quips or not willingly going along with the gag.

I was stunned to see Colbert say the words “Project for a New American Century” on the air… i don’t think I’ve ever heard it on TV before.

Let’s hope Steven isn’t involved in a traggic “accident” of some sort in the near future

For those of you who don’t know why the Project for a New American Century is so evil, and I am not going over the top with that word, evil… you need to read the letters and reports they have published about their desire for American Empire, especially their proclaimed need for a “NEW PEARL HARBOR” if the public was going to go along with such pursuits.

That of course was before 9/11… the new pearl harbor.

    These people are evil.

WATCH LOOSE CHANGE! Find it on google video!

  49. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    #42 katy,

I double-checked the C-SPAN website and the coverage does start at 8 PM (it’s listed as the “preview”) with the main event being at 9:30. (I do not know if they consider the president or Colbert to be the main event; I’m guessing the president.)

And in 30 minutes you can catch the repeat of last night’s Colbert Report on Comedy Central (2:30 PM EST).

    Have lots of fun.

How’s that for funny ??” Comment by, REAGAN thought I was STUpid

*****Dear Stupid - Thank you for reminding me that neo-progs are famous regurgitators of contemporary history. You realize that the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were attacked under Clinton’s astute eye (if only the former Prez could have kept his eye on the state of the world and off the T&A all around him!!). In addition, Islamic terrorists were HORRIFIED and in MORTAL FEAR at Clinton’s response to the bombing of the USS Cole and the first WTC attack.

I know… Bush could have grounded every plane in the continental US - only the murdering barbarian air students would have been up in the wild blue yonder and Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld could have personally arrested each and every one of them….You are an excellent example of whimpering progressive hilarity!! Thanks for sharing!

  52. Jesus Christ God of WAR Says:

Colbert did a great job of poking at the PNAC leader/author(?).

It’s not like any of the failures of the Bush Cabal can be laid at the feet of Osama bin Laden, “Old” Europe, liberals or progressives, Iraq, Afghanistan, the citizens of New Orleans, or Mexican migrant labor.

No, the failures of the Bush Cabal are ALL THEIR OWN.

It’s shocking to me that Republicans are failing to dig themselves out with extreme vigor.

I see a new battle cry is emerging: Send the Bush Cabal into exile. NOW!

  53. Rix Says:

    Neo-con asscanned!

  54. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid Says:

#52: I never said Bush should ground every plane. He could’ve taken SOME ACTION, ANY ACTION. Instead, he and the rest of your Republican idiots allowed the U.S. to be attacked, despite more than 70 warning by FBI agents, predictions of use of planes, and a warning in the PDB. The hilarity is that you think Republicans have any idea how to secure the country when THE BIGGEST TERRORIST ATTACK IN U.S. HISTORY HAPPENED ON YOUR WATCH. Now, shove it. You are a moron and an obviously misinformed IDIOT.

  55. foxbot Says:

#52 More embassies have been attacked under Bush’s watch. And what exactly was his response to the missile attack on our navy in Lebanon last year?

The response to the USS Cole attack was Bush’s responsibility. The ‘93 bombers and planners were brought to justice. By the time evidence was gathered in the Cole case (I know, you neocons love the platitudes of justice but hate the practice), Bush was president. Condi explained to Congress that they decided NOT to retaliate for the Cole attack when they identified the perpetrators.

The fact is, you cannot point to one single thing Bush did regarding terrorism before 9/11. He did not think it was a problem worthy of his efforts (unlike the pressing issue of undoing environmental protections for his oil buddies). The old saying holds true: the harder I work, the luckier I get. You think it’s coincidence Bush (and we) are most unlucky when he takes his French-length vacations?

Bush could have continued Clinton’s policy of pursuing al Qaeda. But Bush didn’t want to continue anything Clinton was doing, as part of that whole red state philosophy where you think you’re smart and the rest of the world is stupid.

  56. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid Says:

#52: Try to explain how the biggest attack happened on your watch means that Republicans know anything about security. Based on recent news, you guys are busier trying to line up prostitutes and illegal contributions from business. Your last answer avoided the question. Try again, moron.

  57. Krazny Says:

    Thanks for the hyperbole MA,

Care to share any real thoughts on the topics being discussed here, or have your meds not kicked in yet? You have posted on a two threads, and none of you posts have had anything to do with the topic of the post, nor have they brought any sort of honest debate to the thread. If you wish to regurgitate tired right wing talking points, why don’t you go do it over yo little green footballs, were you will be welcomed by the rest of the morally bankrupt, misogynist whose incoherent babblings are passed off as reasoned debate. You would be welcome there with loving arms I am sure.

  61. kindness Says:

No, it’s much more comforatable to always bring up and blame Bill Clinton for everything. Really, she’s one that you really need to just skip her posts. Waste o time.

  62. Krazny Says:

Truth be told Kindness, I am trying to get the vein in MA’s head to burst. I always picture her in a darkened room hovering over the keyboard. An angry expression on her face. A sneer on her foam flecked lips. underneath her bleached blond hair nearly out of sight but getting bigger is a large pulsing vein. My hope is to marginalize her so much, and hope for the vein to burst. I can only imagine from all of the angry rantings she posts here, that she is a sad angry women. I don’t really know what may have caused her unusual psyche. Nor do I care. I just hope that she nevers comes near me, my family, or any other human being.

Not having been incarcerated I would not know. Assuming that this is true of course. Give my best to the nurses at your home, and maybe suggest they should up your dosage a bit.

Too bad that most people in the mainstream media are apparently too chickenhearted to take this sort of hard stance with people like Kristol. Look how easy it was to put Kristol on the defensive, and how feeble his defense actually was. “I think we’re doing ok”…?? That’s the best he can come up with? This is a case of damning with faint praise, if you ask me — especially considering that PNAC has the power of the current vice-president (Cheney), a former vice-president (Quayle), the Secretary of Defense (Rumsfeld), a multimillionaire (Steven Forbes), and the President’s brother and governor of Florida (Jeb Bush) behind it.

Iraq Winners Allied With Iran Are the Opposite of U.S. Vision
    By Robin Wright
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Monday, February 14, 2005; Page A08

When the Bush administration decided to invade Iraq two years ago, it envisioned a quick handover to handpicked allies in a secular government that would be the antithesis of Iran’s theocracy — potentially even a foil to Tehran’s regional ambitions.

But, in one of the greatest ironies of the U.S. intervention, Iraqis instead went to the polls and elected a government with a strong religious base — and very close ties to the Islamic republic next door. It is the last thing the administration expected from its costly Iraq policy — $300 billion and counting, U.S. and regional analysts say.

  101. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid Says:

#65. Bush needed only to take one, simple action. The same action which the President is uniquely positioned to take: investigate reports of Al Qaeda members learning to fly planes. The PDB should have triggered at least an inquiry by the Bush Administration. Instead, no discussion or action at all. None. It was pathetic how Bush let Osama Bn Laden attack the United States, exactly like they had been warned would happen.

  102. Chase Says:

If you wanna see an interview with Kristol, watch C-SPANs Q & A with him about a month ago. I’m sure CSPAN has it archived. It’s a WHOLE HOUR so I a little doubtful the short-attention spanned among you can stick it out but in a *real* interview, Kristol comes across as a pretty normal, if not thoughtful guy.

Or is CSPAN another bullshit ReichWing Propaganda Machine?

  103. Grace Nearing Says:

In the rebroadcast, watch Kristol’s face when Colbert brings up the idea of a military draft and then asks Kristol about his own draft status during Vietnam. Kristol looks absolutely sick to his stomach.

  104. Scott Silva Says:

I guess you would prefer Larry The Cable Guy or Jeff Foxworthy over those who use comedy to express outrage against the establishment.

Comics like Carlin, Rock, Bruce, Stewart, Colbert and of course, King Richard Pryor provide the best comedy by giving us the darker side of life and why we have to put up with people like you. Try to learn what real comedy is.

Years later, 2400 brave young men and women have gone to their grave and thousands will not be the same for the rest of their lives. Tens of thousands Iraqis have been murdered and we are now in the process of demonizing another country so that we can justify nuking them. Incidentally, Mighty Hypocrite’s tendency to bring up male anatomy for insults is one reason I have concluded she/he/it is probably not a woman–and definitely not a professional woman. As a former Fulbright scholar with Ivy League degrees, I can say that none of my women friends use such terms as Mighty does to put down men–maybe women who work the streets or in honkytonks but not educated professional women.

Michael Lind for instance traced their roots back to the right wing Shactmanite faction of the American Trotskyite movement who entered the Democratic Party in the 1960s and then split with the Left over the Vietnam War. Many members of this group continued their rightward itinerary by rallying to Senator Scoop Jackson’s campaign against the New Democrats. Some finished with the Democratic Leadership Council, while others found a home in the Reagan and now the Bush fils administrations. Other critics who promote an “Iran-Contra bis” scenario for the current flap over intelligence trace the group back to the policy cabal that had promoted the Contra war against the Sandinistas and who had lost their power and influence in the second Reagan Administration as a result of the Iran-Contra hearings of the late 1980s.

Invading a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 doesn’t make the US more secure, and many people believe that it’s only making our country more hated by Muslims who used to be non-political. I personally feel that George W. Bush has turned out to be one of the best recruiters for Al Qaeda. The US was close to victory in Afghanistan, but Dumbya diverted resources to Iraq, and now the Taliban are even making a comeback in some areas. Talking tough and swaggering about terror, which are basically all Bush and Cheney have done, isn’t the same as actually knowing how to handle terror. And your “ha,ha,ha” reveals your own lack of seriousness about keeping the USA truly secure.

  130. Odds n’ Ends » Why I won’t resubscribe to The Economist Says:

[…] Then came the war against Iraq. Right or wrong, I was in favor of the invasion of Afghanistan because I thought the US had the right to defend itself against a manifestly enemy government that harbored the criminals who committed 9/11. But Iraq was an act of overt aggression by an Administration dominated by members of the Project for the New American Century [1]. By the way, if you want to laugh at the PNAC’s expense, watch this). The charter of the UN and common decency allow military action only as an act of defence. To me the idea that Iraq could be a danger to the US divided as it was in two (it had in effect lost control of the Kurdish north), impoverished to the point of famine by a decade of UN embargo, with most of the country convered by two huge no-fly zones and with a government which was a mortal enemy of the Jihadist was absurd, yet the Administration spoke of possible mushroom clouds. Tony Blair said Iraqi WMD were on a 40 minute alert. Remember? Sounds unbelievable now, should have sounded unbelievable even then. […]

The Straussian Neo-Cons, then adopt a peculiar stance in the “Quarrel of the Ancients with the Moderns.” Essentially they argue that modern liberals are myopic dwarfs who actually have nowhere to stand philosophically – and certainly not on any ancient giants’ shoulders. For the Straussians modernity since Machiavelli has been a straight path to nihilism where all understanding of political virtue has been lost along with respect for a social hierarchy rooted in aristocratic values. To rediscover Virtue’s true meaning, they argue we must return to the classical schoolroom and the pagan philosophers where moral teaching began - but this is a path is only open to a select few. For the rest of us, a return to organized religion, what Strauss called a “pious fraud,” along with uplifting patriotic fables, are our only hope of avoiding the fall into total anomie. Given their rejection of modernity, it’s not surprising that Straussians should endorse a religious faith they don’t share as a necessary fiction needed to maintain good order among the masses. It is perhaps from this that comes the embrace of the Evangelical Christian Right by secular intellectual Jews as political allies within the Republican Party and of “Christian Zionists” by their Likud friends from Israel.

Who knows what these people get out of this? Who cares? Move on. Mighty Aphrodite only has power if we believe she does. If we ignore her (him), it will disappear.

    Stop being punked.

    Puzzler,
You’re so right. I’ve said the same thing myself, but I sometimes admittedly fall into the temptation to refute her/his blather. But note that when asked what Bush has actually done to make the US more secure since 9/11, not surprisingly the trolls remain silent. I’m through with them.

  144. Briseadh na Faire Says:

    Puzzler,

Point well taken. I have said much the same myself. But as one who is graduating from an ABA law school, with Distinction, I cannot help but point out as B.S. when Mighty Aphrodite claims she is a defense lawyer.

By now, many of you have seen my postings. Hopefully you are gaining a better appreciation of those in the legal profession. Some of us actually do care to do the right thing…that is what led us to become Advocates.

…. Her postings demonstrate she is completely bereft of any legal writing skills. - “Brilliant” legal commentary by Briseadh na Faire

*****Apparently the ability to retain information is not necessary in your “scholastic” circles. I have said repeatedly (!!) I am not in favour of the death penalty. Your postings demonstrate a complete absence of logic, the hallmark of cogent legal reasoning and argument.

#152 - “Mighty Hypocrite… as a lawyer i would have thought an ‘INNOCENT’ plea would bring joy?” - Comment by meg-mooch

*****Dear Meg - The correct legal term you are referring to is a finding by the triers of fact (the Jury) of “not guilty”. Unfortunately, my client was guilty of 1st degree murder with special circumstances, making him eligible for the death penalty here in California. The prosecution asked for the death penalty and the jury was swayed by our defense teams arguments that justice would be better served with a sentence of LWOP (life without parole).

#153 - “MIGHTY HYPOCRITE…. off topic but what do you think of men bombing abortion clinics and murdering doctors? Killing people is not a form of free speech!”
    More “brilliance” by meg_mooch

*****Dear Meg (again) - I am completely against anyone bombing abortion clinics and committing murder. They should be prosecuted, and if found guilty, punished to the full extent of the law. That you would even ask such an ignorant question is telling…but not surprising.

  146. meg_mac Says:

MIGHTY HYPOCRITE …. Joy is inappropriate in any case! i bet your ‘hired help’ will be at the march! or will you refuse to pay her for the day?

  147. mighty aphrodite Says:

As I don’t employ illegal aliens to clean my home or care for my children, your question is irrelevant - as usual. But I have suggested the marches are an excellent place for the Border Patrol to concentrate their apprehension efforts….

  148. mighty aphrodite Says:

Dear meg-mooch - I appreciate your comments on my positions re: the death penalty and abortion doctor murderers. Oh - you didn’t make any comments - why am I not surprised…..

  149. meg_mac Says:

MIGHTY HYPOCRITE… BE CAREFUL YOU MIGHT HAVE TO ACTUALLY TOUCH YOUR OWN DISHES! LOT’S OF LEGAL IMMIGRANTS WILL BE MARCHING.
