BREAKING: Rove’s Legal Troubles More Extensive Than Previously Reported

It has been widely reported that Rove’s legal troubles center around his initial failure to tell prosecutors about his conversation with TIME Magazine’s Matt Cooper regarding Joe Wilson’s wife. In a new story, Murray Waas reports that Rove could also be in legal jeopardy based on the substance of what he said about his conversation with Cooper once he acknowledged it occurred. Here’s the critical point:

Rove testified to the grand jury that when he told Cooper that Plame worked at the agency, he was only passing along unverified gossip, according to people familiar with his testimony.

In contrast, Cooper has testified that Rove told him in a phone conversation on July 11, 2003, that Plame worked for the CIA and played a role in having the agency select her husband, former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, to make a fact-finding trip to Niger in 2002.

Cooper has also testified that Rove, as well as a second source — I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, then-chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney — portrayed the information about Plame as accurate and authoritative.

So there is a big difference between Rove’s version of the story and Cooper’s version of the story. If Fitzgerald establishes that Rove is the one not telling the truth, it could potentially form the basis of perjury or obstruction of justice charges against Rove.

In short: Rove’s in even more trouble than we thought.

I think Rove just broke out in hives.

A gift that keeps on giving. Merry Fitzmas!

  4. Daniel DiRito says:

‘Twas the night before Fitzmas, and all through D.C.
The Senate stood empty, just waiting to see.
The Grand Jury listened to Fitz with much care,
He hoped that the votes all would be there.

Ken Mehlman and Rover all snug in their beds,
While visions of November danced in their heads,
And Dick in his bunker, as “W” did sip,
A drink from the flask he poured through his lips.

When out at the Post arose such a clatter,
They sprung from their cubes to see what was the matter.
Away to the phones they flew like a flash,
Called up their sources who asked for some cash.

The Times of New York had the lights all aglow,
As they savored the scuttle they knew soon would flow.
When, what to their wondering eyes should appear,
But a signature sheet with twelve names written so clear.

With Old Crow in his throat, George W then spits,
He knew in an instant it must be the Fitz.
More rapid he guzzled, his Party might lose,
So he bristled and shouted while chugging his booze.

    Now Karl! First Libby!
    Damn Fitz you vixen!
    Lost Browny then Scotty!
    Who else are you fixin’
    To topple from power!
    We’re takin’ a lickin!
    Now damn Fitzy, damn you!
    Damn you this hour!

If not for those levees and Katrina’s wrath,
Dear God, why all these obstacles, who chose her path?
You live in the big house, but the White House is blue,
What else can go wrong, will Dick Cheney go too?

And then in a tantrum, he ran to the roof,
The stomping and kicking of each little hoof.
As he pulled out his hair and was turning around,
Up through the hatch big Barbara came with a bound.

In blue robe with white dots, from her head to her toes,
Yes her clothes were old fashioned, but everyone knows.
A bag of buckshot she held in her hand,
Then she told him that Karl could not take the stand.

His jaw how it twitched, his chin to and fro,
His cheeks were like roses, his nose white from blow!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
She pulled on his ear…you’re back on the snow!
The shaft of a pen he held tight in his fist,
And the smoke it encircled, man was he pissed.
He made a mad face, then reached for the lead,
He shook it and scowled, I wish he were dead.

Righteous and pompous, a nasty old soul,
She slapped him and said, pull Cheney from the hole.
A wink of his eye and a grin on his face,
Soon Fitz he would show that he should stay in his place.

He spoke not a word but went straight to his work,
And filled all the shotguns, then turned with a jerk,
And with shaking fingers, he dialed the phone,
Dick Cheney I need you, he said with a groan.

Dick called for his chopper, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight,

Happy Fitzmas to all and we’ll get him tonight!

If both Rove and Libby “portrayed the information about Plame as accurate and authoritative” not only did Rove “perjure” himself, he also “conspired” with Libby, Cheney, Hadley and Fleischer to out Valerie Plame. Didn’t he?

  14. james risser says:

mmmm, that is interesting. what this tells me is that cooper can pin rove with violation of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982:

‘[w]hoever, having or having had authorized access to classified information that identifies a covert agent, intentionally discloses any information identifying such covert agent to any individual not authorized to receive classified information, knowing that the information disclosed so identifies such covert agent and that the United States is taking affirmative measures to conceal such covert agent’s intelligence relationship to the United States, shall be fined not more than $50,000 or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both’ (50 U.S.C. 421 (a)

    all the elements are met with rove, if cooper is correct;

i am getting EXCITED that perhaps rove will get indicted for the BIG ONE–the violation of the underlying statute AND the various libby charges that pertain to him.

further, if cooper can pin this on rove, then libby’s indictment may get amended!!!!!

    YIPPPEEEEE!!!!!

  15. Death to the GOP says:

    And Limbaugh! Oh happy day!

  16. james risser says:

unfortunately, under the IIPA statute, conspiracy is only charged when the underlying purpose of the release of the information is to cause the usa harm. that would be nearly impossible to prove…

whether there would be some sort of RICO conspiracy charge is another matter. who knows?

  17. Seixon says:

Waas is a bit of a liar. Here’s what Cooper wrote in his e-mail to his editors:

Cooper wrote that Rove offered him a “big warning” not to “get too far out on Wilson.” Rove told Cooper that Wilson’s trip had not been authorized by “DCIA”—CIA Director George Tenet—or Vice President Dick Cheney. Rather, “it was, KR said, wilson’s wife, who apparently works at the agency on wmd [weapons of mass destruction] issues who authorized the trip.”

So in Waas World, “apparently” is the same as “authoritative”. Yeah, I can see how Rove would release Cooper from confidentiality to implicate him in having lied. Seems like the wise thing to do. If Cooper did say that it was “authoritative”, then his own e-mail conflicts with that, and it will be his word against Rove’s. If Fitzgerald expects to get a conviction out of that… Well, he may not be all he’s cracked up to be.

  18. Pachacutec says:

    Nice. Brother Murray is de-lovely.

  19. foxbot says:

#18 Seems your only hope now is that a seasoned prosecutor is not all he’s cracked up to be. Pin your hopes on that.

  20. Seixon says:

#20: Well, I don’t rely on Murray Waas and MSNBC telling the truth, so I doubt it will ever come to the point of Fitzgerald showing himself not to be all he’s cracked up to be. If he indicts Rove on these grounds, as Waas says he will, then he’s a fool. He’ll never get a conviction on that. He has a weak case against Libby already.

Waas and MSNBC lie all the time, so I don’t take a whole lot of stock in what they are selling.

  21. Mark says:

Sadly I have to wait until somthing actually happens before I express any joy…but the anticipation is killing me.

“big warning” not to “get too far out on Wilson.”

So Rove was warning Cooper not go out on a limb and publish anything to support Wilson because the White House was putting out the story that Wilson’s wife was the one that sent Amb. Wilson to Niger and not the CIA.

Since this is a flat out lie, Rove was actively engaged in discrediting Wilson’s Op-Ed and Wilson’s creditability. Rove was engaged in a conspiricy against Wilson.

Rove and the rest are in big trouble and they know it.

  26. For Truth says:

Yup thats right conservatives and Repubs, we are having a flesh-feasting, red-meat ripping, moon-howling, batty ol’ good time- you are welcome to join in on the fun!

  27. Seixon says:

Death to GOP: Nervous? No, I don’t really give a damn if Fitzgerald indicts Rove. I’m just saying that the facts don’t support what Waas is saying, nor do they support a sane indictment of Rove.

Why would Cooper lie to his own editor about his convo with Rove? I’ll believe his e-mail rather than Waas’ speculation about his testimony for the grand jury. Waas is a serial liar and fraudster.

  28. Marie says:

    The suspense is killing me!

SULAIMANIYA, Iraq (Reuters) – Iranian forces shelled Iranian Kurdish guerrilla positions inside mountainous northern Iraq early on Friday morning to repel an attack, a Kurdish official said.

“This morning Iranian Kurdish fighters infiltrated the border into the Iranian side and the Iranian army bombed the area and repelled them. The shelling hit Iraqi land at Sidakan,” said Saadi Pira, an official of the Iraqi Kurdish, Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, party.

There was no word on casualties in the shelling of the Iranian Kurdish rebels of the PJAK movement.

  33. MasonMcD says:

I’m just saying that the facts don’t support what Waas is saying, nor do they support a sane indictment of Rove.

Seixon, you do understand the difference between an email to your boss, and testimony in front of a grand jury, right?

Gee, wonder why Cooper’s testimony didn’t take the 30 seconds to recite his email, then.

Secondly, if you tell me I’m full of crap, and I turn around and tell my friend, “apparently, I’m full of crap” can I surmise you were just guessing, then?

There is nothing that the chimp and his family will NOT do.

They successfully hid their ties to Adolph Hitler, committed treason during that time too.

Dumbya-the-smarter was in the Bay of Pigs fiasco to his beady little eyes, he helped draft the plan to use hijacked planes to attack domestic targets and try to blame Cuba for it in the 60’s. (Operation Northwoods – just google it) – McNamara rejected it.

And what do you know on 9/11 they dusted big-daddy’s plan off and used it some 35 years later. Wonder why Neil Bush’s firm was in all three of the collapsed buildings on 9/10? All the company would say is they were “installing security devices” and declined to specify what those were. And magically all three buildings collapsed in a very orderly fashion.

And anyone is suprised that dumbya and co. would steal two elections? Suprised that we were lied into a war? Suprised that they are going to nuke Iran?

    I’m not. Not at all.

  42. Neoconvict says:

Rove, rove, rove your boat… right into Leavenworth… How many more elections can you steal? Before you destory the Earth?

Who will take on the NeoCDons and their election-stealing machine?

Clint Curtis is mounting a congressional bid in Florida against Tom Feeney. As many of you know, Curtis was the programmer hired by Feeney to write election-stealing software a few years back. Since then, much has happened, including the suspicious death of the Florida Inspector General Raymond Lemme looking into the matter and the total media clampdown of any serious discussion of electronic election manipulation in Florida and across the nation. Curtis, a former Republican, became so disgusted by what he saw that he became a whistleblower. The whole sordid tale is chronicled on http://www.bradblog.com.

Here’s Curtis in his own words:

My name is Clint Curtis. I am running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Florida’s 24th Congressional District. This great district is currently represented by one of the most corrupt politicians in history. Having personally attended closed-door meetings where Tom Feeney spoke candidly about his aspirations of corruption forces me to provide this district with an alternative to this man. I will need your help.

    http://www.clintcurtis.com

Now Curtis is now taking on the VERY well-funded Feeney. He promises to fight for fair elections and to expose electronic vote fraud. He is the ONLY candidate who will take it to the NeoCons on this issue.

Because of his willingness to take on election fraud, I believe Curtis may be the single most important candidate for the progressive community to promote. Please visit his web site and offer to help, donate even $5 if you can spare it, and help spread the word. It’s time to TAKE BACK AMERICA–and Mr. Curtis may be own only chance of overcoming a rigged election system.

FBI Investigated 3,501 People Without Warrants

Received Details From Banks, Credit Card, Telephone and Internet Companies

    By MARK SHERMAN, AP

WASHINGTON (April 29) – The FBI secretly sought information last year on 3,501 U.S. citizens and legal residents from their banks and credit card, telephone and Internet companies without a court’s approval, the Justice Department said Friday.

It was the first time the Bush administration has publicly disclosed how often it uses the administrative subpoena known as a National Security Letter, which allows the executive branch of government to obtain records about people in terrorism and espionage investigations without a judge’s approval or a grand jury subpoena.

#87 From what I’m gathering, the pugs are planning to detain the illegals at the new base. Using Midway Airport for detainees would not have worked for them. (too busy) They will be given a choice, go to jail, be deported or fight for your “new country”.

I’m not saying I’m opposed to the plan of forcing the illegals to put up or shut up, something has to be done. I’m sick of their arrogance and their total lack of respect for real Americans who fought for the freedoms we have in this country. They should march in their own streets if they want change like we have had to do for 2 centuries.

Guru, you’re delussional. Millions of people live in Illinois. We aren’t backwoods rednecks like you where everybody is related to everybody.

  82. Seixon says:

#31, EasyRider: Did Larry Johnson ban you from his site? You still have an account at TPM?

No, I’m still waiting for him to reply. LOL. Apparently he needs a few days to figure out how in the world he is going to spin the fact that I took him to the cleaners.

  83. katy says:

  84. KJ Lovell says:

#87 you are 100% correct about the purposes of dumbya’s concentration camps.

He learned from grand pappy shrub. The bush family absolutely adored Hitler. I find it funny that they now seem to take exception when called what they actually are – Nazis.

Prescott managed a factory that used slave labor from Auschwitz. In Oct. 1942 their assets were frozen for violating the trading with the enemy act. (funny that was swept under the rug almost as fast as Jebs Bankok adventures)

  85. KJ Lovell says:

Sorry to post in parts, but I just remembered that the legislation has been changed so that the “detainees” can be force to work for the govt.

Sounds so much like 1930’s germany doesn’t it?

  86. Seteo says:

    # 92 @GURU – maybe before you start critizing someone for a minor typo you should learn how to use proper grammar and structure sentances correctly. Are you sure you haven’t got 6 toes and married to your mother?

  87. Seixon says:

Yeah, I mean, prisoners in our own country don’t work or anything… Zzzzz….

  88. KJ Lovell says:
