What Iraqis Think: Mission Botched

On the third anniversary of President Bush’s declaration of the end of major combat operations underneath a “mission accomplished” banner, a new poll of Iraqis conducted in late March 2006 for the International Republican Institute offers grim reminders of the troubles regular Iraqis continue to face.

Less secure. The vast majority of Iraqis – 76 percent – rate their security situation as “poor.” More than half of all Iraqis (55 percent) say the security situation has gotten worse in the last three months, a 26-point increase since last fall.

More divided. Six in 10 (62 percent) of Iraqis say that the country is more divided than in the past.

Facing economic freefall. Fully three quarters of Iraqis (76 percent) say that wages have gotten worse in the last three months, a stunning 58-point increase since last fall.

More corrupt. Nearly seven in 10 Iraqis (68 percent) say that corruption has gotten worse in the last three months, a 19-point increase since last fall.

When asked whom they trusted the most to protect their personal safety, a plurality said the Iraqi police (43 percent), followed by the Iraqi army (35 percent). Hardly anyone — one percent — picked the multinational forces.

The time has come for the United States to take control of its interests and change the course in Iraq, as proposed in the Strategic Redeployment plan offered by the Center for American Progress.

They favor the guys with guns performing vendettas? Okay, then, let’s leave them to it. They’re good.

Only ones whom seem to trust him is the Crooks.

Hey IRI are yew a crook?

The broom that Bush has gotten the US impaled upon is going to require major surgery to remove. Even if the broom is removed successfully, the persistent anal seepage that follows is going to be difficult to stop.

Thank you, Bush, Mighty Moron, I-R-I and other jesus freaks.

Great stats. My questions are; What are some gross population numbers on any given day?How many people are leaving Iraq? How many are coming back? I haven’t seen to many pictures of anything other than what we destroy. Also Iraqi national security forces in What region? I’m going to go see if any body owns the copyrights to Escape from Bagdad. If you have time to make a movie about a war you’ve been there too long. I’m sure we’ll hear Wars are different now. They just take time, buy some Northrup Grumman stock, some Roche and some GE and you will benifit from our government stimulating your portfolio. Lower investment taxes help these companies win the War, for your wallet.Sorry, all these billions getting tossed around and it numbs my mind the way it has been spent.

  6. Jay Randal says:

All those who want a war on Iran, please step forward for military training, you are needed as cannon fodder troops on the front lines! If too fat or too old, then you must sacrifice your sons and daughters for the cause of procuring more oil and profits for the greedy Oil Cartel CEOs!

Wait….You mean we can have the SAME progress and freedom in Iran too?

What are we waiting for? Every nation (that has substantial oil reserves) should know the joy of dumbya.

  9. Jack says:

That pretty much was the sentiment here:

April 3, 2006 4 1 Iraqi women: Confused, maybe, but clear nevertheless
April 10, 2006 4 2 ‘Our childhood is killed in Iraq. It is killed’
April 17, 2006 4 3 Is this what they told us we were going there to do?
April 28, 2006 4 4 Gone are the days when war was between armies

If the war is going to cost over a trillion and up, just think how we could have helped the Katrina survivors, and the world in other ways. And families, both American and Iraqi, would not have been torn apart and could be around to help in other ways.

At this point, this administration has shown over 5+ years that it can not be trusted big time!

  13. Seixon says:

We want Saddam back! We want Saddam back!

The fun part is, if Bush does “redeploy” (otherwise known as withdrawing) and it goes ever worse… you can blame Bush for that too! Wuhu! It’s a win-win situation for you guys isn’t it?

Personally I don’t see the brilliance in having to send American troops into Iraq from Kuwait every time the terrorists and insurgents blow people up and get out of hand. The conflict might move to Kuwait along with us, as well. Is that what we want? Do we want al Qaeda killing people in Iraq AND Kuwait?

Sure is fun to play armchair quarterback.

  15. Erroll says:

Certainly it is time to change course. The present course is taking this country over a precipice by needlessly killing Americans and making sure that Americans are being unnecessarily maimed and crippled and paralyzed, both in mind and body, returning to this country missing an arm and/or a leg. All this is made worse by the fact that very few, if any, of our intrepid politicians are logically calling for the rapid and immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, if not from the entire Middle East region.

  16. For Truth says:

The poll was conducted by the International Republican Institute. Rebulicans are going international now, what, can’t get enough recruits here at home? What, other countries are adding a Republican party to their system? I don’t get it. What do they do, get people from around the world to send in absentee ballots for a payment? Are there other Republican parties in other countries?

Why do Iraqis keep listening to the librul media? Don’t they know how great things are going in their own country?

  22. Stupid Republicans says:

The main point of this poll I would say is that the Iraqi people have changed their opinions drastically since Bubble boy threatened Iran.

We were supposed to be liberating the Shiites yet we threaten the Iranian Shiites with Nukes.

Republicans are soooooo stupid. I’m glad the rest of the world has more brains than them.

I am and have been against this war. I think we should leave. We’re killing innocent people. If the Iraqis do not want us there, then why are we risking the lives of our soldiers who I would bet joined the military to protect our country, not people who don’t want them there? If that makes me cold, then well, consider it one of the things you don’t like about me. I’m sure there are others. No one is 100% good, not even me : )

Pretty soon well have you saying our U.N Ambassador should go in there with his Ipod on eating chips with his feet up until someone else decides to step up and actually do something.

Also, coruption compared to what? Saddam? So here we are at the lowest level of expectations for goods deliveried, IE: Mission Acopli Phase? The Administration is apparently not responsible for predicting the future, but, show a tremendous affinity for dictating tomorrows, so I say every day ask them for plans that have to play out with different senarios and outcomes and project where we need carrot extensions, NOT, “Here comes that ugly stick again”. They hear the right whistle blow and it’s all hands on deck. Rush with your wallet to help the GOP help you. Mullah Rasputin Rapture at the helm.

Theres nothing wrong with being cold(besides, from what I’ve seen women don’t have inner warmth to begin with :) Some one has to asses the realities of a situation instead of going all care-bear with the wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just get along world view.

  29. Stupid Republicans says:

Lyrics to “Shock and Awe” by Neil Young:

Back in the days of “mission accomplished”
Our chief was landing on the deck
The sun was setting on a golden photo op
Back in the days of “mission accomplished”

Thousands of bodies in the ground
Brought home in boxes to a trumpet’s sound
No one sees them coming home that way
    Thousands buried in the ground

Thousands of children scarred for life
Millions of tears for a soldier’s wife
    Both sides are losing now
    Heaven takes them in
Thousands of children scarred for life

We had a chance to change our mind
But somehow wisdom was hard to find
We went with what we knew and now we can’t go back
But we had a chance to change our mind.

Not to mention that this illegal war is costing us a fortune!

Personally, I can’t afford it, how bout you?

I see absolutely nothing wrong with a peace, love and understanding – optimistic attitude and perspective – as long as it comes with a reality factor that everyone wants to play nice or get along.

And if the Iraqi people do not value or want our help any longer (if ever in some cases), I think we have no need to still be over there. Quit forcing our ‘help’ upon those who don’t want it. Personally, I don’t think that is necessarily cold – just realistic.

We seem to forget that it is a very different culture with very different wants. Just because George Bush, an egocentric imbecile, wants something doesn’t mean everyone else wants it too. Stop forcing your way on me.

We shouldn’t have gone over there to begin with. The Iraqi people were not in the middle of a Revolution attempting to seek democracy. If they weren’t disgruntled enough to fight for the freedom, then who are we to force it upon them?

There are worse situations (Darfur and Cambodia come to mind) where we could have been more effective than Iraq. After we leave, in three, five, maybe ten years, they will eventually go back to being in a patriarchal, militant, violent country. Why? Because that is their culture. It is their religion. It is their way.

  32. unbelievable says:

Well, sure there are. But they don’t have any measurable oil for Dubya and Cheney (or the other Republicans in charge) to drool over.

Funny, I think I said that same line in another forum. Agreed. These people aren’t capable of humanitarian anything, unless it is their very own ass on the line, and then they’re all about ‘the people’. Yeah, sure.

  35. Cyra Brown says:

I’d like to see a poll about how Iraqi’s feel about all of those ‘permanent bases’ that BushCo has been busily building, while denying any intentions of a continuing presense in Iraq. Bet they are just THRILLED!! And, is it just me, or is the new U.S. Embassy a bit ‘oversized’? Why so massive? Couldn’t they have just purchased one of Saddam’ palaces’ from the new government, and then remodeled it? Way more cost effective, and a slap at Saddam too. Oh well, they are not known for their ‘planning’, now are they?
