Candidate Bush Would ‘Sing The Star-Spangled Banner in Spanish’ At Hispanic Festivals

President Bush, 4/28/06:

I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English.

But in his book American Dynasty, Kevin Phillips notes that during Bush’s first presidential campaign, he would often sing the national anthem in Spanish. From pg. 142:

When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, or Philadelphia, in pivotal states, he would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” in Spanish, sometimes partying with a “Viva Bush” mariachi band flown in from Texas.

I beg to differ – this issue, albeit minor on its own, is yet another demonstration that any time Bush provides an unscripted response to a question from the press, the response he provides is either incorrect, hypocritical, or a bold-faced lie.

CNN’s Ed Henry is on the case: HENRY: Scott, on Friday the president firmly said he believes the national anthem should be sung in English. And in there, he claims that, during the president’s 2000 campaign, he did sing The Star Spangled Banner in Spanish at some Hispanic festivals, various campaign events. [...]

Personally, I think the question is ridiculous. What the hell does it mean to ask someone else if they “trust in” someone else’s marriage?

I do know these few simple facts:
Hillary never threatened to leave Bill and take their daughter because his drinking was getting too excessive.
Teresa never threatened to leave John and take (her) kids because his drinking was getting too excessive.
But Laura DID threaten to leave George and take the kids because his drinking was too excessive. And since he never sought professional help for his drinking (he’s known as a “dry drunk”), I think one would be better off not “trusting in” this marriage. Besides, he is a bit of a dick.

What was the point you were trying to make, anyway?

One four tortilla, one scrambled egg, two slices of smoked thick sliced bacon, grated sharp cheddar cheese and top with your favorite picante sauce (anything but Pace) Fold and roll together. Open mouth, insert breakfast taco, bite down & chew. Repeat as necessary.

I was using the marriage issue to make a point to how these guys used it to pander.
Regardless, Bush actually stopped drinking because her cared about his wife and kids.. that’s all the therapy I’d need to realize what t I’d would loose making a simple choice about the direction I want to take my life.

you’re right though, hillary didn’t threaten bill with his alcohol, it was his women… and it still didn’t stop him… so does that make him a dry humper? But she didn’t leave leave him like a true feminist would… cause after all she needed his political capital… everyone has a price.

And for Kerry?! well we all know what would happen to him.

My point was that the pandering that takes place is ridiculous and when the issue is raised based on the Star Spangled Banner translated in spanish at some festival with hispanics (not nuestro himno).. compared to how the otherside has used various groups depending on the time of the year particularly in areas of “sensitivity” to that group, I think it is ridiculous. 78. R. Aston says:

Let us be honest here and not be left wing or right wing. From a strict definitional viewpoint, Bush is a traitor against the USA. He doesn’t really approach things from a left or right view, he asks, “is this good or bad for the U.S.?” If it is good, he is against it, if it is bad, he is for it. Period.
Bringing in massive numbers of foreigners, IN ADDITION to his insane scheme to legalize those already here, WITHOUT EVEN APPROPRIATING ONE EXTRA DOLLAR FOR CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS, IS ANOTHER MOVE TO DIVIDE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. Bush singing the National Anthem in Spanish is also divisive. One of the top five reasons the U.S. is successful is that we were one of only 3 mega-countries in which almost everybody speaks one language. Now we are not. China still is. 97% of Chinese speak Mandarin Chinese.
In recent trips to Europe I’ve noticed that in 8 different countries I’ve visited a higher proportion of the young people speak English than in the United States! Italy is a notable exception, but in most other major European countries almost everyone under 25 or 30 speaks English. We are going the other way.
There are millions of young people in the U.S. who speak only Spanish, and are illiterate in 2 languages. This is destrructive.
By the way, the U.S. Constitution defines treason as “adhering to [the nation's] Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.” Whether you define America’s enemy as China or Al Qaeda or both, there can be no doubt that Bush’s bumbling imbecilic trade policies give China aid and comfort. In fact, they are laughing at us on a daily basis. And Bush is aiding Al Qaeda by not going after Bin Laden, by attacking Iraq, and by using war and threats rather than diplomacy. This feeds Al Qaeda’s recruiting efforts.
The only logical argument that can be made that Bush might not be a traitor is the rather technical argument that, since CONGRESS HAS NEVER DECLARED WAR ON CHINA OR ON AL QAEDA, Bush cannot be a traitor since there is “no enemy” to be giving aid and comfort to. This is really a pretty idiotic argument, however, since Congress never declares war on anybody any more. In all of our wars since 1946 we have never declared war, so that means there has been not been one American traitor since 1946? This is an absurd defense of Bush.
And of course there was that little matter of Bush LETTING 9/11 HAPPEN without even trying to stop it.
I realize that the American people have been indoctrinated to believe that a president cannot be a traitor. They are wrong. We are no more immune to having a traitor in charge than dozens of other countries which have been in this sickening position. We may be the rare exception of a free country that actually twice voted for the traitor, or at least allowed him to get close enough that he could steal it.

At the same time when the orther slideslips up… the media gives them a nice pass.”

I can’t quite make out what your point is here unless it’s that “the ‘other side’ does it, too.” But what “pass” do the media give? Clearly you have fallen for the myth of the so-called liberal media. Please don’t make the mistake of thinking everyone else has turned off the critical-thinkign side of their brains.

  86. Think Progress » Washington Post Covers Bush Hypocrisy On Singing National Anthem In Spanish says:

[...] The Washington Post – in an article headlined “Administration Is Singing More Than One Tune on Spanish Version of Anthem” – picked up on President Bush’s hypocrisy on singing the national anthem, reported by ThinkProgress yesterday. An excerpt: The Center for American Progress, a liberal group run by Clinton chief of staff John D. Podesta, posted on its blog a reference to Bush singing the anthem in Spanish. In his book, “American Dynasty,” Kevin Phillips wrote that Bush “would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ in Spanish, sometimes partying with a ‘Viva Bush’ mariachi band flown in from Texas.” [...]

  91. Josefina Jimenez says:

The slang equivalent for “flip flop” in Spanish is “si pero no” (=yes but no) or, quoting a famous TV comedy show in Mexico, another translation would be “como digo esto digo lo otro” (=I say one thing then I say the opposite”)… or, if you prefer, as my dear Hawaiian friend put it, you can just say “hipocrita!”…

  92. Louis Edward says:

If this is true, is there video? Oh, how cool would that be?! Juxtapose it with his current comments. Tonight, the Daily Show aired clips of Laura Bush saying it was OK to sing it in Spanish. Then when CNN’s John King pointed out what her husband had said, she changed her tune (no pun intended) to say that the anthem should be sung in English. …This doesn’t amount to a hill of beans, but what hypocrites!

There is a tape of Bush humming the national anthem in Spanish while Jeff Gannon gives him a hummer wearing nothing but a bandolier and a Mexican hat.

Damn! If Bush can get a hummer from a guy wearing a freakin’ sombrero, at least he’s got SOMETHING going for him.

Maybe he should’ve gone into porn instead of politics. Then he could’ve done to silicone-enhanced bleach-blondes what he’s been doing to the entire country — shit, the entire globe.

[...] Yes, fellow race-traitors – Michelle, Bryan and possibly Jesse just dropped one straight into the laps of the Open Borders Lobby and pinning 9/11 on a tequila-crazed “Viva Bush” mariachi band from Jalisco that had grown frustrated after not landing a birthday-party gig after 20 consecutive days of showing up at what they thought was the designated day-laborer site (it was actually a methadone clinic). Their hearts filled with rage they recruited a gang of disenchanted young Arab men (who they met at the clinic), forged Virginia drivers’ licenses for them, trained them in the dark-arts of ka-ra-te (with a little capoeira mixed in for good measure) and sent them on their dirty deed. The rest, of course is history. [...]

Everyone should learn the English language and speak it.
The US National Anthem should not be sang in any other language .Immigrants may sing it in their language at their own private gathering but not at any public
    ceremony etc.,

The next thing will be the FLAG to change to their likeness as mosaic.

I THINK THE NATIONAL ANTHEM CAN BE SUNG IN ANY LANGUAGE, AS LONG AS THEY SING IT W/ THEIR HEART, AND KNOW WHAT IT MEANS. COMMENT #98 SAID THAT WE MAY SING IT IN OUR OWN PRIVATE GATHERING AND NOT IN A PUBLIC CEREMONY. AND YOU ARE RIGHT, WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE SINGING THE ANTHEM IN A PUBLIC CEREMONY. THEY DID IT IN SPANISH, SO THAT THE PEOPLE COULD UNDERSTAND IT BETTER, KNOW IT’S SIGNIFICANCE,
