UPDATE: The National Anthem At Bush’s First Inaugural

UPDATE: Contemporaneous media accounts (see here for example) report that Secada was singing “America the Beautiful,” not the national anthem. The story from Cox News below, reporting that Secada sang the national anthem in Spanish, appears to be in error.

Jon Secada Singing at the White House

On Friday, President Bush blasted the idea of singing the Star Spangled Banner in Spanish. But Bush’s highly-scripted 2001 inaugural ceremony actually featured a rendition of the national anthem sung in Spanish by Jon Secada. From Cox News Service, 1/18/01:

The opening ceremony reflected that sentiment. A racially diverse string of famous and once famous performers entertained Bush, soon-to-be First Lady Laura Bush, Vice President-elect Richard B. Cheney and his wife, Lynne, who watched on stage from a special viewing area.

Pop star Jon Secada sang the national anthem in English and Spanish.

Apparently, Secada singing the anthem in Spanish was a regular feature of the Bush campaign. From the 8/3/00 Miami Herald:

The nominee, his wife Laura, erstwhile rival John McCain and his wife Cindy joined Bush on a platform where children sang the national anthem – in “Spanglish,” Secada explained.

This morning, ThinkProgress revealed that, according to Kevin Phillip’s book American Dynasty, Bush himself sang the national anthem in Spanish. Looks like Bush’s conviction that “the national anthem ought to be sung in English” was something he acquired very recently.

Seemingly, it appears many believe that Mexicans should not to be allowed any celebration of their heritage…we reserve that right for the Irish on St. Patrick’s and the Italians on Columbus Day to name a couple. 56. Dean 4 Prez says:

The real issue is that they want to cater to the huge ignorant base by using xenophobia as weapon. Saying that you can’t sing a song in another language is like saying you can’t speak another language. It is just a song. With a lot of simbolic meaning, but just a song.

They are desperate. I am enjoying this so much!

  57. Bruce Gorton says:

Okay, here are my feelings on the American national anthem:

Sing it in English. It isn’t like it should be a major thing in anyone’s life, it isn’t even a very good song (not as bad as South Africa’s because at least it is all one song in one language, but no where near as good as the Irish Rugby song) but English is the official language of the USA, and frankly an anthem is a warcry, it just doesn’t work if you can’t at least reach a consensus on the words.

UMM exactly how logistically would Saddam have invaded the US? He would

1.) need a large technically savvy Navy to even reach the shores of the united states, including multiple aircraft carriers to establish air superiority in order to land ground troops.

2.) need an army of millions with up to date weaponry to establish ground forces across the country. I suppose he could hold the coasts, and ignore the middle section of the country. Even still the manpower would be staggering.

3.) need an updated airforce to counter the US Air Force.

4.) a treasury in the billions to support the cost of such a war.

5.) to hold the rest of the world at bay while he invaded.

He couldn’t hold Kuwait for a year, do you really think he could invade the US? there is no way that saddam could pose that type of threat to the US. At least of you are going to spew nonsense, make sure it is semi-beleivable nonsense.

but the photo is captioned as…

“Jon Secada sings the American National Anthem during Cuban Independence Day at the White House Friday, May 18.”

Does anyone have a sure link to the inauguration schedule/program that clearly states that he sang the anthem?

Gov Jeb Bush’s wife is Mexican-born:

The First Lady was born in Leon-Guanajato, Mexico in 1953. She and Governor Bush met in Leon, Mexico in 1971 while he was teaching English as part of an exchange program sponsored by his school, Phillips Academy, Andover. They were married on February 23, 1974, in Austin, Texas. They have three children George, Noelle and Jebby and in 2004 they were blessed with the addition of a new daughter-in-law, Amanda, wife of George P.

Yet another reason to abandon Capitalism: Your health…

    Study: Americans sicker than English

Study finds more serious illness despite greater U.S. spending

CHICAGO (AP) — Middle-aged, white Americans are much sicker than their counterparts in England, startling new research shows, despite U.S. health care spending per person that’s more than double what England spends.

“At every point in the social hierarchy there is more illness in the United States than in England and the differences are really dramatic,” said study co-author Dr. Michael Marmot, an epidemiologist at University College London in England.

The study, appearing in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association, adds context to the already-known fact that the United States spends more on health care than any other industrialized nation, yet trails in rankings of life expectancy.

Smoking rates are about the same on both sides of the pond. The English have a higher rate of heavy drinking, but a higher percentage of Americans are obese.

The researchers crunched numbers to create a hypothetical statistical world in which the English had American lifestyle risk factors, including being as fat as Americans. In that model, the researchers found Americans still would be sicker.

Only non-Hispanic whites were included in the study to eliminate the influence of racial disparities. The researchers looked only at people ages 55 through 64, and the average age of the samples was the same.

Americans reported twice the rate of diabetes compared to the English: 12.5 percent versus 6 percent. For high blood pressure, it was 42 percent for Americans versus 34 percent for the English; cancer showed up in 9.5 percent of Americans compared to 5.5 percent of English.

The upper crust in both countries was healthier than middle-class and low-income people in the same country. But richer Americans’ health status resembled the health of the low-income British.

Health experts have known the U.S. population is less healthy than that of other industrialized nations, according to several important measurements. U.S. life expectancy, for example, ranks behind that of about two dozen other countries, according to the World Health Organization.

Robert Blendon, a professor of health policy at the Harvard School of Public Health who was not involved in the study, said the stress of striving for the American dream may account for Americans’ lousy health.

“The opportunity to go both up and down the socioeconomic scale in America may create stress,” Blendon said. Americans don’t have a reliable government safety net like the English enjoy, Blendon said.

Actually, the more I look for information on Columba Bush’s background, the more I find references to her been born in Mexico, and how her family is originally from there. Take this, for example:

Married this month to Amanda Williams, who accompanied him on the Mexico trip, George P. Bush is the grandson of migrant worker Jose Maria Garnica, who separated from his wife and still lives in Mexico. But Bush said he did not have much contact with his maternal grandfather.
George P. Bush accepts criticism of some U.S. policy during Mexico campaign trip

George P Bush was campaigning in Mexico to get the expats’ vote. Again, the evidence seems to point to the fact that his mother’s family is from that country -not Cuba.

But if he claimed his wife was Cuban, well, I believe you might be on to something. Me thinks it would be fantastic if you could find the references. Not that I would be surprised to find out Gov Bush lied to get elected…

LATINO RADIO SHOW OFFERS PRIZE TO FIRST ILLEGAL ALIEN TO HAVE LOU DOBBS BABY
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CLICK HERE FOR LIVE VIDEO FEED

Los Angeles, California, April 26, 2006 Los Angeles’ top rated English language Latino radio talk show, The Pocho Hour of Power on KPFK 90.7 FM , Fridays at 4pm, has made an unprecedented financial offer to so-called “illegal immigrants”. In the interest of racial harmony and assimilation of immigrants into U.S. culture, the co-hosts of the Pocho Hour of Power make this offer: The first undocumented immigrant to name their U.S. born child “Lou Dobbs,” before September 16 th , 2006, will win $500.00 worth of baby nursery items from participating East Los Angeles merchants supporting the Name Your Baby Lou Dobbs Challenge.

It is the Pocho Hour of Power’s contention that today’s modern immigrant is assimilation minded and generally eager to please. Today’s undocumented immigrant is the uninformed American of tomorrow. Americans have a great tradition of naming their offspring after public figures, like John Wayne, Ronald Reagan and Archie Bunker. What could be more patriotic than naming your baby after a beloved American bigot? Immigrants are not a threat to this great nation, in fact, they are industrious, ambitious and, at times, just as confused, inarticulate and one-sided on the immigration issue as Lou Dobbs himself.

CNN’s puffy pundit Lou Dobbs is the largest anti-immigrant critic on the horizon, and casts a huge, rotund shadow over the media’s discussion of immigration. Scapegoating minorities is an American tradition and a patriotic duty; just ask the patriots that tossed all that tea into Boston Harbor.

Other acceptable nicknames for “Lou Dobbs” in the Name Your Baby Lou Dobbs Challenge are, Potato Head, Beaner Town Boogie Man and Y.T. Bashaspick.

    Buena suerte, Raza!

    The Pocho Hour of Power

    ——————rules y que——————-

Winners must claim their prize live on the air, on the Pocho Hour of Power, Fridays at 4pm on L.A.’s KPFK, 90.7 FM, and present an official U.S. birth certificate with approved name(s), baby in question and notarized proof of illegal status. Baby must be born between 4-28-2006 and 9-16-2006. Those of generous spirit, wishing to contribute to the bounty to be awarded to Baby Lou Dobbs, may do so by logging on to the “Baby Lou Dobbs” Baby Registry at babiesrus.com. The registry number is 97882776 or you can search the site for first name: “Baby Lou” last name: “Dobbs”. In the event that there is not a winner in the Name Your Baby Lou Dobbs Challenge , all prizes including any donations in the baby registry will go to a charity, to be named at a later date, that benefits immigrants and their families.

Not as far as I know… We’re all really too afraid of stuff that has a slim to none chance of happening (road rage, terrorism, one another), and not at all concerned with the fact that most of us will die from heart disease or cancer…

My father was diagnosed with cancer when I was 15. My grandmother (his mom) died from lung cancer shortly thereafter. Since high school I have paid attention to my health, and how to stay that way. Yet occasionally people like to tease me because I am vegan, don’t smoke and gave up a high paying job with much stress – the same folks who fear a small group of radical Islamic terrorists who’ve managed to kill fewer Americans than our own government. Doesn’t make sense to me.

So, I’m guessing we’ll not be able to answer your question any time soon… Although it’s quite valid. Guess it just doesn’t get higher television ratings that ‘headchoppers’

#161 If the links to both of them are posted, I’ll comment on the differences (not being myself as far as proficient in english as I wished).

But the one thing that nobody as said is that the metrics of lyrics of the song in english and spanish may differ a lot, and simply to make a translated lyric match with the original music would be hard. For example “spangled” hasn’t direct translation in spanish, and you must adapt the whole phrase, not only by vocabulary, but by musicality, too, because a lot of words have a different lenght and intonation. But I think that doing this doesn’t make it unpatriotic, but in the contrary, more patriotic, because there is people working hard to integrate in the USA, and learning a song that is almost a pledge of allegiance.

Or how it is so easy to get the population (that means “Murricans”) to be distracted by this kind of hot button issue when we are experiencing the most corrupt, greedy, and ignorant leadership (Congress and Chimpresident) of our lifetimes? Something tells me your idea of research is listening to talk radio.

umm… is it just me, or is the fact that secada sang “america the beautiful” in spanish at the 2001 inauguration in any way relevant to the question of whether he also sang the national anthem in spanish? sure, the CNN transcript cuts in with him (supposedly) singing one song, but the entire proceedings are not documented there.

would it really have been impossible for him to have sung more than one song?

and for all the folks referring to the photo, that’s not relevant either. the caption says it’s the anthem, but it also says it’s cuban independence day (and just why are we celebrating that foreign holiday at the WH anyway?). nor do we have any indication which language secada is singing in from a still pic.

as i read it, we still have one report that the anthem was sung in spanish out there, with no real info contra. surely the WH has a tape of the entire thing somewhere. if there’s no antema en espanol in there, they could release that instead of this “golly shucks i don’t remember that” routine.

  181. Ugly Republican Gringo says:

Let me think about the situation… I leave my home, travel to a foreign land where everyone speaks another language and have different customs. Now I ask them to learn my language, as opposed to me learning their’s. I ask them to change their anthem to my language. I ask them to let me live and thrive here illegally while they change their customs to suit me. Do you think they would let me take their wives and daughters if I demanded nicely?

    Capital B., Capital S.!

If you want the language, music, and customs to perfectly suit your lifestyle, GO HOME! You were never invited to start with!!! And you bleeding heart liberals will blame the rest of us when your plan backfires and we are all living in the land of North Amexico.

  198. Jose, Can You See? « Royal Northwest Mounted Valise says:

[...] Update: Warning- heavy irony ahead! Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., introduced a Senate resolution Monday “giving senators an opportunity to remind the country why we sing our national anthem in English.” Noting that America is a nation of immigrants, Alexander said, “We are proud of the countries we have come from, but we are prouder to be Americans.” Of course, Alexander is the former Secretary of Education (originally known as the US Bureau of Education who, in 1919, translated the Star Spangled Banner into Spanish!!) Update II: It just keeps getting better! According to Kevin Phillips, in his book American Dynasty, during his first campaign, Bush would occasionally sing the Star Spangled Banner in Spanish! Read the quote here. Update III: O.K. the man has taken stupidity and incompetence to a new level. It now turns out that the National Anthem was sung in Spanish at his first inaugural! Read and laugh/weep here. [...]
