Congressional Priorities: $700 Million for ‘Railroad to Nowhere,’ $173 Million for Stopping Mass Murder

The Senate is expected to approve a nearly $109 billion spending bill today. The legislation provides some useful insight into the priorities of our current Congress.

The bill includes $700 million for the “railroad to nowhere:

The project, which was added to a $106.5 billion emergency defense spending bill in the Senate, would relocate a Gulf Coast rail line inland, to higher ground. Never mind that the hurricane-battered line was just repaired at a cost of at least $250 million. Or that at $700 million, the project championed by Mississippi’s two US senators is being called the largest “earmark” ever.

Meanwhile, a paltry $173 million has been appropriated for peacekeeping efforts in Darfur, where violence is “horrendously bad and worsening” according to the U.N.’s top humanitarian official.

After three years of genocide — 400,000 dead, 2.5 million driven from their homes, razed villages, rape campaigns, and mass starvation — our government still doesn’t get it. So much for “Never Again.”

On a positive note, at least the Senate passage of the $173 million today was unanimous. When the funding was voted on in the House, it was opposed by the White House (which wanted even less) and passed by only five votes, 213-208, thanks to strong opposition from conservatives, including House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH).

Maybe they could use the railroad money to build a track in Darfur?

This way the next 2.5 million refuges won’t have to be driven from their homes – but instead they can be railroaded from them… the perfect republican plan… pretend humanitarianism and windfall funding for the large construction companies… USA! USA! USA! USA! USA…

Instead, funding for AMTRAK is being cut.

Everyone in the Congress who takes part in this pork fest must be voted out of office or forced to resign in shame!

  14. Krazny says:

Lets see most of the leaders and talking heads on the right have either never served in the military, or their daddies got them into comfy national guard spots during wartime. On the other hand the “all talk left” has had numerous representatives serve not only in the military, but also during war time.

so who exactly is all talk?

On topic, from a fiscal perspective spending money to benefit casinos in Mississippi will bring in more revenue then helping people in Darfur, and I bet that the campaign contributions from the casino’s helped get Lott elected. Furthermore the refugees in Darfur don’t vote, so from a political perspective there is little to gain from any action to help them. I realize how cynical I sound, and I don’t like it much.

  15. Shep says:

The Darfur situation, while terrible, does not require any US involvement. How about first stopping the genocide in Iraq by pulling out? This is just another false-flag operation to divert the masses’ collective attention from the ongoing debacle in Iraq and the larger up-coming debacle in Iran.

No rational person in the Darfur region wants to see the Imperialists get involved in their situation.

I agree this will not happen… the military does not recruit democrats it creates them.

It is not until the dill-weed republicans have seen the realities of war and flawed foreign policies that they wise up enough to switch parties.

You know what they say – Republican… once you go to Iraq you don’t go back… to the party of corruption and incompetence that is.

  20. pgw says:

i’m ashamed of some of these responses! the republicans have a great plan for running this country into the ground; and that plan needs a pathway, that plan needs infrastructure. this ‘railroad to nowhere’ provides that much-needed pathway and that much-needed infrastructure.

i, for one, say ‘well done’ to the republicans, the architects of this visionary plan. all aboard!

  21. Jules says:

pgw – dang, I thought it was bridges to nowhere, now a railroad to nowhere? What the hell is so great about nowhere that they get all these transportation methods!!!

  22. Punchy says:

I’m confused on a much more simple level–why are they getting $700 mill if 1) It’s already been built, and 2) it didn’t cost $700mill????

If I went to solicit money for a charity that didnt’ exist, that’s against the law. How can any lawmaker ask for money that so clearly won’t be spent on what they say it will? WTF?

Me too. Now if only we could fight just them and not destroy everyone’s lives in Iraq. Problem with fighting all the barbarians is the women and children keep getting in the way.

and I support safeguarding the innocents of Darfur who are contending with the barbarians in their country.

Glad you do. Too bad your GOP buddies don’t really want to. Hypocrites. Let’s invade Iraq to spread freedom and save innocent lives. Let Africa take care of itself. Unless there’s oil in Africa…

I’m certain military recruiters will see a large expansion of military enlistment by the “all talk” LEFT

Probably not. I bet recruitment’s down among Republicans, too. But you’ll ignore that point. Funny how most vets are Democrats, too. Hmmmmm…. wonder why.

I’m confused on a much more simple level–why are they getting $700 mill if 1) It’s already been built, and 2) it didn’t cost $700mill????

Punchy – that was the old railroad that didn’t cost 700 million – but it’s already got several months worth of ware and tear.

The 700 million is for the new railroad – which is destined to be replaced by a 7 billion dollar railroad 8 to 10 months after its construction.

Railroads can never be to new you know!

For the uninformed, the wingnut websites have adopted the “Fighting 101st keyboardists” as their moniker, and the Loony Tunes version of a chickenhawk as their logo – not knowing that “chickenhawk” is the street slang for guys (and gals) who hang around bus terminals and train stations looking for desperate kids running away from home and looking to “make it in the big city”, so that they can hook them into prostitution.

Whatever else the relocation project is, it isn’t a benefit to any of the casinos.

In addition, CSX paid the $250M to repair the KAtrina damaged line with 90% insurance proceeds and 10% of CSX funds, so it isn’t like the $250M was federal funds as the post implies.

I live in Pass Christian, MS, within spittin’ distance of the RR tracks. I know the amount of traffic the line carries (over thirteen trains a day on average) through seven small coastal towns on a ground level grade. The disruption to local commerce is significant, not to mention the dangers presented in emergencies.

While I have mixed emotions about the plans for the rail bed if the relocation takes place (I prefer elevated rapid rail mass transit), I have no doubt the $700M would be a net plus to the region and to the overal safety of the nation. Almost every hurricane in this area damages the current rail system because it is located on or near the water’s edge.

A lot of the reporting of this issue is uninformed or ilinformed at best.

    Just sayin’…

Calm down… no need to yell. You’re asking s a loaded question. Because it’s a personal perspective as to what’s ‘okay’. It varies depending on who you ask.

For me personally, I try to avoid it. I suck up spiders with my dust buster and dump them outside. I don’t eat or wear animal flesh. And I’m anti-war 99% of the time. In order for me to take a life – and I assume you’re only talking about humans since that is the egocentric culture in which we exist – I think I could kill someone, reluctantly, if it came down to a choice between them and me. Survival instinct. Otherwise, off the top of my head, I can’t think of a reason that I personally could condone. But, I don’t speak for everyone else.

Ah, and this is how we know Mighty Moron is NOT a lawyer.

Or maybe you just went to the McDonalds school of legal burger flipping? Whatever the case, you once again show how STUPID you really are.

In attempted murder, the mens rea requirement, Latin for “guilty mind”, is limited. In some common law jurisdictions, an accused is not guilty of murder if the victim lives for longer than a year and a day after the attack. This reflects the likelihood that, if the victim has survived so long after the initial attack, there will be other factors contributing to the cause of death and so break the chain of causation. Subject to the local statute of limitation, the accused can still be charged with an offense representing the seriousness of the initial assault. But, with the advance of modern medicine, the majority of countries have abandoned a fixed time period and test causation on the facts. In most countries murder is considered the most serious crime, and invokes the highest punishment available under the law. As with most legal terms, the precise definition varies between jurisdictions.

As always the ’sweeping generalization’ that isn’t based on facts, laws, or even STANDARD ENGLISH is what we get from the resident SOCIOPATH and POSER LAWYER.

A poser lawyer, a poser veteran (who considers a DESK JOCKEY LAWYER a veteran anyway?), a poser woman, and a poser wife and mother. There’s nothing authentic about you other than your ignorance.

And Mighty Moron, how about this little tidbit.

second degree murder – the intentional killing of another person without premeditation (ie killing in the heat of the moment)

Most SANE people wouldn’t consider this to be MENS REA, then again, we’ve previously established you aren’t SANE or a LAWYER, you’re just a BIG FAT CRAZY FRAUD.

Yet another BORING post from Mighty Moron, the DUMBEST poser on the web.

” So many self-centered people believe history begins and ends with themselves – how pitiful. Of course, some of those people actually do grow up…. Mighty Moron”

When you do grow up, come back and post…

    Zzzzz….

Then why have laws for killing?

Because, other people don’t see it the same way. You have to protect yourself and others from those who think it’s okay to kill on a whim. They are the minority, but they do exist.

Then why is the 2nd amendment is violated?… Because there is a refusal to recognize it isn’t the gun… Ironically New York was trying to impose an ordinance that you could not be of a certain age to have large markers or cans of paint to combat the graffiti issue. Marc Ecko managed to twist it to say it was a violation of the 1st amendment. The judge ruled in his favor. I think that is hypocritical.

#69, 70, 71, Zzzzz – Did Mom let you out of “time-out”? You say “favorite” I say “favourite” – you say “color” I say “colour”. Some “people” are such radical left-wing extremists that they say in six or seven paragraphs what an intelligent person can convey in a single sentence or two. I suppose there are people who think the more they say, the more inteeligent they appear. Brevity is a hallmark of clarity.

I agree that guns don’t kill people. But, I also know that an angry rednack with access to a loaded weapon is probably going to wind up on Cops. Personally, I think gun ownership should come with an education. Sorta how you have to pass a test to get a driver’s license. That to own a gun, you should know how to use it. Of course I see the problems in letting the government regular fire arms, since the Founding Father’s wanted us to have them to protect ourselves against the government…. But there are pros and cons to every subject. And the result in looking for a fail-proof system results in doing nothing. And we see where doing nothing has left us. One of the highest murder rates in the world (I think we rank 5th).

I’m not sure how the spray paint ties into guns, but I don’t see graffitti as a comparable issue to shooting people…

All murders are homicide, but not all homicides are murder. “Mens rea” is the necessary element of determining degrees of criminal culpability.

A short talk with the Sudanese leadership along the lines of , “Stop the killing by next Thursday or your capital will be a big hole in the ground.” would work wonders, especiallly if all those who are bemoaning the suffering there were publicly on the record of supporting such action. How many here actually believe that those who want the suffering to stop would actually support decisive, overwhelming military action aimed at stopping the civil war there?
