Washington Post Perpetuates Myth of Scientific Debate About Basic Facts of Global Warming»

Today’s Washington Post has a story about Canada’s conservative government cutting funds for programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This passage stuck out:

Canada, which has long clung to its “green” image, hosted early work that led to the Kyoto Protocol, in which 163 countries and regional organizations pledged to meet quotas to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions that many scientists believe are warming Earth, melting glaciers and brewing more-intense storms.

Many scientists believe carbon dioxide emissions are warming the earth?

Science Magazine analyzed 928 peer-reviewed scientific papers on global warming published between 1993 and 2003. Not a single one challenged the scientific consensus the earth’s temperature is rising due to human activity. This scientific debate only exists in newspaper articles.

Whether or not global warming is already causing “more-intense storms” is nominally more controversial. But a definitive study by M.I.T. scientist Kerry Emanuel found “major storms spinning in both the Atlantic and the Pacific since the 1970s have increased in duration and intensity by about 50 percent.” Emanuel concluded that trend of more intense storms was “linked to increases in the average temperatures of the ocean surface and also correspond to increases in global average atmospheric temperatures during the same period.”

Oh, and the evidence is pretty conclusive that Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere, as the result of human pollution, is warming up the planet.

The reporter should have stayed awake in fifth grade Science class to know that one…

Yea, so what that every independent study about global warming agrees that it is happening? Given enough time and money, the GOP will buy a scientist to say global warming is a myth.

Independent World Television. I’m a fan of Mike Farrell, not because of MASH or anything, but because of his character and citizenship. I mean, how much do each of us do each day for our country. How many people even know what they could do, and how. If we don’t get good people into politics at all levels, does anything matter. We are really ignorant about our government, and most politicians like it that way. (If the government were a corporation, the lack of citizen participation & knowledge is like no shareholders showing up at the stockholder meetings.) I found out about IWT because Mike Farrell is a founding member. I am really disillusioned by most jounalists and media conglomerates. The manipulation is getting really tiresome.

This administration has really attacked science. Good Christians are environmental stewards, caretakers of the planet. Bush uses religion to further his own agenda and his cronies.

Experts from Florida’s top universities today warned that the state’s economy could suffer as environmental changes caused by global warming begin to affect coastal properties and the tourism, agriculture and retirement industries. The threats are outlined in two reports released at a press conference held by the Florida Climate Alliance, NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) and the Union of Concerned Scientists. The reports are available on-line at http://www.floridaclimatealliance.net.

  44. Scalar EM Says:

    Drive a Neo-Con Crazy!

In the last 12,000 years earth’s magnetic field has changed almost 5 times.
During the time of change, there must be a time “t” where earth would have no magnetic field whatsoever due to the change.
Now, if we assume that the intensity of the solar winds electromagnetic radiation is Bmax or Emax with the relationship:
    E/B = c
and also if we know that the average power per unit area is Emax.Bmax/2mue
    mue = 4pi * 10^(-7)
and that Earth is exposed to solar electromagnetic field with strength of Bmax and Emax. Usually every kind of electromagnetic radiation has an impact momentum and therefore can create an electromagnetic force. p=mdelta(v) so p/t = m delta(v)/t = m a = F(magnetic)
so we know that F(magnetic) = p/t and we know that impact momentum is U/c where U is the energy transfered to a surface and c is the speed of light. We also know that
    average power per area or Power/ A = Emax.Bmax/2mue
    and so Power = Emax.Bmax . A /2. mue
    Power = U/t so
    Power . t = U = Emax. Bmax . A. t / 2 . mue
    so we konw that p = U/c and since we also know that U = Emax. Bmax . A. t /2. mue
    F(magnetic field) = p/ t = U/c . t = Emax . Bmax . A . (t^2) / 2 . mue . c
Usually, half of earth’s surface area is exposed to sun and since earth is an sphere (almost) we can say that its surface area is 4.pi.r^2, and half of that is 2.pi.r^2, so A = 2.pi.r^2
that would mean that the force on earth is now expressed in the
    F(magnetic field) = Emax . Bmax . pi . ([rt]^2) / mue . c
earth and sun are attracted by a force of F(gravitational) which is equal to
    QUOTE
    F(gravitational) =G M(sun) . M(earth) / d^2
since earth is rotating around the sun in a semicircular path, therefore the centripetal force is F = F(gravity) - F(magnetic) = mv^2/rsince we know the magnetic and gravitational force at the moment where earth’s magnetic field is momentarily gone we can substitute:QUOTE (->
    QUOTE
    F(gravitational) =G M(sun) . M(earth) / d^2

I was raised to not want to get married. My father watched his mother get slapped around by some portion of her three husbands, and his biggest fear was that I would become dependent upon someone like that. I couldn’t count the number of times he would randomly say “If any man ever lays his hands on you, I’d kill him.” Needless to say, he only ever met one or two of my boyfriends and hated them immediately.

I’m beginning to think it’s better to get married later in life anyway, when the testosterone has begun to fade off so that they are more interested in what you have to say than how much sex they can have. But, I’m still not sold. Will take a unique man to get me to commit. Or a lobotomy :)

Not that it stops - just changes the thinking about sex intervals from every 5 seconds to maybe every 30. Allows you to have a conversation in between. And consider the consequences of your urge to fight or f everything… :)

Bit, you should congratulate yourself. More males are conceived than females, but by 18 years old, there are more women than men. Testosterone makes you all do risky things that sometimes don’t go very well… (ever see that show Jackass ?)

But I find more people are understanding once they’ve been married for a while with kids or divorced. They understand that it’s not a choice to be made just to have the Mrs. title. That it’s hard. That a 64% divorce rate for those married since 1990 is that way for a reason.

M (Earth)/d Sqd is bogus. As Spock would say “That does not compute”. Try again.

  78. Matthew J. Price Says:

It seems as though the Right-Wingers have a backup plan just in case they loose control of the United States federal government. They intend to remake Canada in their image. It is a last-ditched attempt to create at least one country in the world where they can escape to incase their plans fail in the U.S. Evil always survives in one form or another.

Canada! Prepare yourselves for at least 40 years of Reichwing Hell!

The conservative radical Nazi movement will start in Canada much the same way it did in America. Weak and mild. Later on though, the Right-wingers in Canada will become identical to their American counterparts. It’s gonna happen to them just as it happened to us. First Germany, then China, then the United States, and now it’s Canada’s turn.

God Have Mercy on Their Canadiam Souls!!!!!

    Squeegeblow,
You’ve been drinking gasoline instead of Kool-Aid.
    How’s that working for you?

  81. Seixon Says:

Ahem, you have an MIT professor challenging the CO2 claims, and you also have Dr. Gray, the most respected hurricane scientist in the USA, you does not believe it.

Keep trying to claim there is no debate! It’s your only hope of winning the debate - by claiming there is none.

  82. Think Progress » Bush ‘Doubts’ He’ll See Gore Movie; Wants To ‘Set Aside’ Global Warming Science Says:

[…] Two important points need to be made: 1. Bush casts his answer in terms of a debate that exists on whether greenhouse gases are caused by human activity. In fact, as ThinkProgress has repeatedly documented, there is no scientific debate on this issue. Not a single peer-reviewed study conducted between 1993 and 2003 challenged the consensus that the earth’s temperature is rising due to human activity. […]
