The Washington Post – in an article headlined “Administration Is Singing More Than One Tune on Spanish Version of Anthem” – picked up on President Bush’s hypocrisy on singing the national anthem, reported by ThinkProgress yesterday. An excerpt:
The Center for American Progress, a liberal group run by Clinton chief of staff John D. Podesta, posted on its blog a reference to Bush singing the anthem in Spanish. In his book, “American Dynasty,” Kevin Phillips wrote that Bush “would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ in Spanish, sometimes partying with a ‘Viva Bush’ mariachi band flown in from Texas.”
White House spokesmen and former campaign operatives said they could not recall whether that happened, though given the level of Bush’s Spanish proficiency, they seemed dubious.
“Honestly, I don’t remember him ever singing the national anthem in Spanish,” said Leonard Rodriguez, who was national director of Hispanic Coalition for Bush/Cheney 2000. “I can’t see any of his advisers recommending it.” But he added: “They may have played it. That’s certainly in the realm of possibility.” And Rodriguez said he does not recall Bush ever objecting to it.
The Post also noted that a news story by Cox News Service which reported that the national anthem was sung “in English and Spanish” at Bush’s 2001 inaugural, cited by ThinkProgress yesterday, was incorrect. We updated our post below last night to reflect this information.
Read the whole article. It’s a good rundown of the national anthem controversy to date.

How many more times must we catch the Antics of this Administration? They have been given every chance to be truthful, to speak to the people rationally without the Hyperbole, the blame game, and the Polarization.
But Still they continue with a Charade thats obvious, so obviuos in fact, that BUSH’s Rating will NEVER rise as long as he keeps playing this stupid “reality” game.
Wake Up Mr Bush. We Know how the ‘Empire Works’. Start peaking the truth, or suffer further pitfalls.
Your Choice Bubba.
May 3rd, 2006 at 10:03 amWhat does this administration not LIE about? Everything they do is based on their belief that you, you and you , and I are a bunch of one eyebrowed, basement dwelling, mouth breathers. Can we honestly go on listening to the likes of Puffy Mc Moonface or Tony Snowjob delivering this sack of stinking lies and still consider ourselves patriotic Americans? This time the revolution will be televised!
May 3rd, 2006 at 10:22 am*GASP* another story about this? The admin lied! omg! we already knew this and wthin a few days this story is completely beaten into the ground and is completely old and stupid. Really, who cares? (well obviously most of you). I personally don’t like this president (or his admin folk) and think there is much more important stories to cover. Yes the admin lied, but come on, it’s not like this lie caused a massive security risk, killed tens of thousands of people and was a major cause of fear for the population. I’m just tired and really don’t care about this crap..quit reporting on it. Bush lied, he’s a “flipity flopper guy” who really doesn’t know which way is up. We’ve known this for years. This story is just stupid :/
May 3rd, 2006 at 10:32 amPage A06 - what a surprise.
The front page is reserved for Administration lies and Karl Rove’s spin.
May 3rd, 2006 at 10:35 amShrub can fart the National Anthem for all I care. The words to the last two lines of the Star Spangled Banner have lost much of their meaning under these Nazi traitors.
May 3rd, 2006 at 10:36 amNO Way! This administration has NEVER practiced any hypocritial act!! NO WAY!
May 3rd, 2006 at 10:41 amThe MSM covering Bush hypocrisy? I never thought I’d see that occur.

May 3rd, 2006 at 10:49 amEverything they do is based on their belief that you, you and you , and I are a bunch of one eyebrowed, basement dwelling, mouth breathers.
Problem is, they keep getting back into office here in this supposed democratic republic. Sump’n ain’t right with that.
God bless murka.
May 3rd, 2006 at 10:53 amHa! Turns out Bush is a flip-flopper just like Kerry!
May 3rd, 2006 at 10:57 amThis whole thing just reinforces that the Bush Regime is full of hypocrisy! They say one thing and do the opposite and then deny they are hypocrites > lol. Americans are tired of politicians in DC lying to them on a daily basis, so Bush and Cheney must resign or be impeached!
May 3rd, 2006 at 11:02 amthought this was funny
May 3rd, 2006 at 11:09 amI just like seeing “Bush” and “hypocrisy” in print together.
May 3rd, 2006 at 11:10 amBush es un mentiroso!
May 3rd, 2006 at 11:22 amI hope this is the last thread on this subject, because the coming war on Iran needs to be covered more, and the economy is collapsing fast as well! Bush and Cheney are proven liars, so everything they spew is bogus crap!

I agree - anyone who has even the most tentative grasp on reality know that Bush is a liar… one more example of him lying isn’t going to convince anyone of this fact who hasn’t already arrived at this very obvious truth.
Lets get back to the important issues… you know the big lies.
May 3rd, 2006 at 11:53 amI still wonder how this debate is helpful to the cause, but it does remind us of the craven way the Bush gang deals with simple truths and the astonishing complicity of the Post.
Meantime, for those wondering “what’s up” with the stubborn few that still support the liar in chief, news from a new poll:
Bush Solidifies Base: Tongues wag as 32% of U.S. turns into pillars of salt.
EWM- (May 2, 2006) The nation is reeling over a poll released today that shows the 32 percent of Americans that still approve of the president have turned into pillars of salt. The stunning discovery may account for the impervious few that still regard the Bush years as a success, despite abundant stimuli indicating otherwise…
Pulse of America Poll director Dr. Bhadana Marginforerror theorized that the transformation has been years in the making. “The permanent Bush base pretty much ceased brainwave activity years ago. As for being turned into a pillar of salt? It won’t be much of an inconvenience–thinking wise anyway…â€
May 3rd, 2006 at 12:06 pmI think the broader point of this “controversy” is not that it’s a sign of wholesale hypocrisy, but of wholesale incompetence. The administration chose this point of view in response to Nuevo Hymno because they wanted to appear strong on something. Just like they chose to stir up xenophobia towards immigrants in order to distract people from Iraq, the most misguided, misconducted war in our proud history. The fact that it’s blowing up in their face is just poetic justice, given that they somehow managed to portray certain POWs and decorated combat veterans as cowardly compared to certain AWOL National Guardsmen and draft-dodgers.
When they’re not being diabolical, they’re being idiotic. This is an instance of the latter. We’re seeing an administration that is desparately trying to do achieve something before the 2006 election, and failing.
May 3rd, 2006 at 12:09 pmBush is such a phony…never sang or heard the anthem is spanish before….just like he don’t know Abramoff…just he never thried to link Iraq and 9/11….wait till we find out that Mr Jack just about ran the interior department and attended their meetings regularly at the white house…!!
May 3rd, 2006 at 1:08 pmLook, you are all focussing on the hypocrisy of him singing the anthem in Spanish right?
Shouldn’t you be focussing a bit more on what his new stance is saying to the Latino communities?
May 3rd, 2006 at 4:02 pmNot a word from you good progressives about the Washington Post’s miserable failure to inform its public.
Well, I guess that proves it.
The collusion between the press and the interests that have seized control of the U.S. Government is far more dangerous than anything Bush can do.
May 3rd, 2006 at 4:27 pmOK, I don’t get what you’re trying to accomplish over here. But as a conservative opposed to the President’s open borders policy, I hope you continue.
Yes, pointing out the “hypocrisy” hurts Bush. But it also hurts the liberal immigration reform Bush is for. I guess you’ve made up your mind which is more important.
Alas, it looks like the point is moot since none of this apparently happened. Darn! Bush has, however, campaigned in Spanish, gives his weekly radio address in Spanish, and the WH website has a Spanish version. It does seem odd, then, to draw the line at the anthem.

If you bothered to educate yourself, you’d realize that Bush is for amnesty and increasing legal immigration drastically. He’s not trying to “strir up xenophobia towards immigrants,” he is trying to quell the concerns of his base. Get a clue.
May 4th, 2006 at 1:08 amWhat I find amusing is the league of lefties here decrying the administration for posting up propaganda and ..lies, yet as with the Jon Secada information, you can see left wing bloggers are very ‘liberal’ with the truth, often just printing all-out lies.
Next time you accuse people of lying - look at your own propaganda first ~~:)
May 4th, 2006 at 3:41 am“The Latino-oriented record label Urban Box Office (UBO) said Saturday it plans to release the new version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” to coincide with the U.S. Senate’s debate on immigration legislation in the next few days.
“We chose to re-record ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ to show our solidarity with the undocumented immigrants and their quest for basic civil rights” UBO President Adam Kidron said in a news release.
The recording, dubbed “Nuestro Himno” or “Our Anthem.”
The song will be primarily in Spanish with a few words sung in English. It contains references to “mean laws” and kind of sounds like a left wing anthem… They totally bastardized our anthem
~~~This infuriates me ~~ Basic rights are violated by not offering amnesty to ~foreigners who enter our country illegally and break the law? ~~ Don’t these Mexicans understand that they are not Americans unless the LAW says they are? ~~if they are illegal immigrants ~~ they are not American ~~ and they do NOT have to benefit from US civil rights ~~ they have to be deported ~~ And what is the deal about recording the Star Spangled Banner in Spanish? ~~Is that showing you accept and respect the USA where English is the official language? ~~ This is even worse than waving Mexican flags everywhere in American streets~~
The lack of respect for our country from these people is mindboggling
~~ And this demonstrates that even legal immigrants have a greater respect and acceptance for their original home country ~~ and a total disrespect for our country and especially US laws ~~
If You’re Planning a Vacation in Mexico, Don’t Forget To Write to Vincente Fox
To the President and Government of Mexico:
I’m about to plan a little trip with my family, and I would like to ask you to assist me. I’m going to walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements. I know you can help with this. I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I’m sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, I will be expecting the following:
Free medical care for my entire family.
English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need.
All government forms need to be printed in English.
I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.
Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.
I want my kids to see the American flag flying over the Mexican flag at their school.
Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.
I will need a local Mexican driver’s license so I can get easy access to government services.
I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I won’t make any effort to learn local traffic laws.
In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police officers speak English.
I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes.
Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and never say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place on the economy.
I know this is an easy request because you are good neighbors to the U.S.
Thank you so much for your kind help.
