Progress in Darfur:

“Sudan’s government and the largest Darfur rebel group agreed Friday to sign a peace plan, a top U.S. envoy said, marking major progress in an internationally backed effort to end the death and destruction in western Sudan.” The timing is critical. The U.N.’s humanitarian chief warned yesterday: “The world’s largest aid effort now hangs in the balance, unsustainable under present conditions. If we are to avoid an imminent, massive loss of life, we need immediate action—from the government of Sudan, the rebels, U.N. Security Council members and donor governments.”

I hope that peace does exist in Darfur.
But this also shows that resource battles can, and do, create conditions that lead to genocide

Wait a second. Did they find Oil in Darfur?? Why would anyone care about what is happening in another part of the world unless it relates to our pocket books? I’m starting to think that the NeoCons are not running this country anymore.

What a shame that would be. They have been doing such a good job of things.

Is it possible to do something like this in Iraq now? Iran?

#3, But this also shows that resource battles can

Jim Rogers, author of “Investment Biker”, talks about this a lot. When looking at a country, and its problems, ask yourself, what raw materials does it have. Lester Brown, at the Earth Policy Institute, thinks the next war(s) will be over water.

Someone probably told the president that there was a black feud in Darfur and he thought they said black crude.

Which country took the lead in this peace process?

off topic but this just in: (can you say Watergate hotel and limo service?)

    WASHINGTON -
CIA Director Porter Goss has resigned, President Bush said Friday.

Bush called Goss’ tenure one of transition.

“He has led ably,” Bush said from the Oval Office. “He has a five-year plan to increase the analysts and operatives.” Bush said that Goss, a former member of Congress, has “helped make this country a safer place.” “We’ve got to win the war on terror,” Bush said.

Said Goss: “I would like to report to you that the agency (CIA) is back on a very even keel and sailing well.”
