The Bush administration is refusing to talk directly with a host of regimes it criticizes, including Iran, Syria, and the Palestinian government led by Hamas. Former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage criticized this approach: “[D]iplomacy is not simply meant for our friends. It is meant for our enemies. … In fact, our enemies need diplomatic engagement more. We ought to have sufficient self-confidence in the correctness of our policy and the ability of our diplomats.”
33: Approval rating of President Bush, his lowest ever as recorded by an AP-Ipsos poll. Bush has also lost the support of his base: “Forty-five percent of self-described conservatives now disapprove of the president.â€
The House yesterday overwhelmingly approved a $7.4 billion port security bill, though conservatives bowed to industry and “blocked consideration of a Democratic amendment that would have required that all cargo be screened before it leaves foreign ports for the United States.”
A sad commentary on the way Americans must carry themselves abroad: “The official team bus to be used by the United States during the World Cup will not bear a flag for security reasons. The 32 official buses were presented Thursday in Frankfurt and the other 31 buses have large national flags of the teams painted on rear sides.â€
“Under intense pressure,” Rep. Charles H. Taylor (R-NC) has agreed to “drop his effort to block federal funds for a memorial to the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93.”
Students at the Broad Creek Middle School in North Carolina write to Mark Rey, under secretary of agriculture, to protest his proposal to sell 309,000 acres of National Forest land. “What is the deal with cutting down the Croatan National Forest? … How would you like it if we cut down some trees around your house?” Meanwhile, President Bush’s nominee to be the next Secretary of the Interior distanced himself from the proposed sale.
Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) says “he’s not surprised by allegations of prostitution” in former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham’s case. “If I’m trying to connect dots, this is not a surprising outcome.”
Cheney friend and Petroleum Finance Corporation head J. Robinson West candidly discusses the effects of peak oil: “Worldwide production will peak. The result will be skyrocketing prices, with a huge, sustained economic shock. … For the last 20 years, U.S. policy has discouraged production and encouraged consumption. If we dither any more, we will pay a terrible price, the economic equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane.â€
The federal government’s no-fly list continues to malfunction, often trapping government officials with security clearances. Examples: an active-duty Army officer who holds a top-secret clearance, a State Department diplomat, and Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA).
“Poor women in America are increasingly likely to have unwanted pregnancies,” a new study shows. Asked to explain the trend, authors “noted that some state and federal reproductive health programs have been cut or made more restrictive in recent years.” Analysts suspect the shift to abstinence-only education “is leading to less use of contraceptives and more unintended pregnancies.”
And finally: Yesterday the Do-Nothing Congress tried to prove it does more than nothing. The House Government Reform Committee took up the important business of approving H. Res. 753, commending “American craft brewers;” H. Con. Res. 399, recognizing “the 30th anniversary of the victory of United States winemakers at the 1976 Paris Wine Tasting;” and H. Res. 327, affirming support for “the goals and ideals of National Passport Month.”

Peace deal for Darfur?
The main rebel group in Sudan’s troubled Darfur region says it will sign a peace agreement with the government if some changes are made, an African Union adviser said today at talks in Abuja, Nigeria. The peace talks are aimed at ending the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of nearly 2 million people since February 2003.

I suspect that the shift away from teaching children the reality of STD’s and the nasty results from catching one has them forgetting to put on their rubbers and the statistics showing the growing problem of STD’s all the way down to grade school would tend to back that up.
I also suspect that the success of teaching children responsibility to one another and personal virtue has the Filthy Left just a little upset thus trotting out “studies” that show raising kids the old fashioned way is somehow harmful. It’s an old worn out trick and we’re not falling for it again.

May 5th, 2006 at 9:28 amthe bus thing….another way of looking at it is that it makes it (potentially) unsafe for people/fans in regular buses. not a smart move in many regards.
on the other hand, over here, buses have numbers of some sort, right? — usually in connection with the bus line or owner. not to mention license plates. i wonder if that’s all true over there. since the buses were “presented” for all to see, it seems like the un-flagged bus is still pretty much a known entity, and the attempt at secrecy is flaccid at best.

What do you consider ‘the old fashioned way’? When I was in high school, just as many girls were sexually active, and just as many got preganant as they do now. The only difference I can see is that now they have their babies, and back then they had abortions, or put them up for adoption.

May 5th, 2006 at 9:39 amIf this site is so truthful and honest and all that why have we not seen anything about Mr. Kennedy this morning?
Police labor union officials asked acting Chief Christopher McGaffin this afternoon to allow a Capitol Police officer to complete his investigation into an early-morning car crash involving Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), son of Sen. Ted Kennedy.
ROLL CALL reports: According to a letter sent by Officer Greg Baird, acting chairman of the USCP FOP, the wreck took place at approximately 2:45 a.m. Thursday when Kennedy’s car, operating with its running lights turned off, narrowly missed colliding with a Capitol Police cruiser and smashed into a security barricade at First and C streets Southeast.
“The driver exited the vehicle and he was observed to be staggering,†Baird’s letter states. Officers approached the driver, who “declared to them he was a Congressman and was late to a vote. The House had adjourned nearly three hours before this incident. It was Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy from Rhode Island.â€
Baird wrote that Capitol Police Patrol Division units, who are trained in driving under the influence cases, were not allowed to perform basic field sobriety tests on the Congressman. Instead, two sergeants, who also responded to the accident, proceeded to confer with the Capitol Police watch commander on duty and then “ordered all of the Patrol Division Units to leave the scene and that they were taking over.â€
A source tells the DRUDGE REPORT: “It was apparent that the driver was intoxicated (stumbling) and claimed he was in a hurry to make a vote.
“When it became apparent who it was, instead of processing a normal DWI, the watch commander had the Patrol units clear the scene. The commander allowed other building officials drive Kennedy home.”
This morning’s incident comes just over two weeks after Kennedy was involved in a car accident in Rhode Island.
“I was involved in a traffic accident last night at First and C Street SE near the U.S. Capitol,” Kennedy said in a written statement released by his office. “I consumed no alcohol prior to the incident. I will fully cooperate with the Capitol Police in whatever investigation they choose to undertake.”

Gag. Hey, guess what. Christians thought the same thing a few years back. It was called the Crusades. Oh, and the Spanish Inquisition. Here’s a wild idea: instead of requiring EVERYONE to think and act like us, how about we just try getting along with them. You know, less killing and dying that way.

Friday 5th of May 2006

On Wednesday this week 8 House Democrats voted YES for a bogus Lobbying Reform Bill, which passed 217 YES to 213 NO, so those 8 Dems screwed us all!
Democrat voters are becoming cynical about Congress in general, so this turncoat type behavior reinforces that view, and makes voters desire a new third party!
Those 8 Democrats must be punished by the Party leadership, or told to resign their seats in the House, so real Democrats with guts can take their positions!
Why should any progressives support fools who help the GOP, by voting for continued sleaze in DC, who help to pass legislation that does nothing to reform it!
Core/base Democrats when they receive requests for contributions, for some incumbents, cringe in outrage and wonder why they even bother to vote anymore!
Sen. Joe Lieberman, for example, no longer represents average Democrats, but he expects to be supported by the party membership, while he defends Bush Regime!

Good point. The only “versions” we have of history were almost all written by the winning sides of the conflict. And we all know how people like to re-write history, even as it’s happening.
Years from now (hundreds), kids in school may be taught about the heroic battle of Pvt Jessica Lynch that the Pentagon tried to trot out when she was first rescued. She later admitted that there were plenty of things wrong with the “official” story, but the misinformation did not originate with her.
I know that a lot of people refuse to believe that our government had any involvement (to at least some degree) with 9-11, but the facts recorded on that day conflict with the official government account of that day’s events. What will future generations be told about the actions of this corrupt, mendacious, totally dishonest administration? Only with the help of liberals will they ever learn the truth. May 5th, 2006 at 10:10 amThe version of history as written by the victors throughout history. Why read what the losing side has to offer(if you can even find it), their the losing side.
“History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.” – Churchill (which is actually a reason to read the losers side, so you get the complete picture, but anyways, I’ve always liked the qoute)
May 5th, 2006 at 10:10 am#74 Wow, a flip-flop within the same post.
Actually, you were right the second time when you suggested that we should try to learn the losing side’s version of events. Only there are you likely to learn about atrocities and illegalities committed by the winning side, which will rarely, if ever, mention them. Our government, just like every other government, has done it.

May 5th, 2006 at 10:19 amGood point. The only “versions†we have of history were almost all written by the winning sides of the conflict. And we all know how people like to re-write history, even as it’s happening.
So that’s what Squeegie meant. Gotcha. Why I love ‘A People’s History of the United States’ by Howard Zinn. No autocrat to edit it.
Years from now (hundreds), kids in school may be taught about the heroic battle of Pvt Jessica Lynch that the Pentagon tried to trot out when she was first rescued. She later admitted that there were plenty of things wrong with the “official†story, but the misinformation did not originate with her.
What is the Official story?
If it’s any consolation, the history textbooks actually are better written than when we were in school. They do talk about the genocide of the Native Americans by the original American settlers. I was surprised. But, as neocons go after money rather than knowledge, I guess it makes sense that acedemia is more liberal as a result.
I know that a lot of people refuse to believe that our government had any involvement (to at least some degree) with 9-11, but the facts recorded on that day conflict with the official government account of that day’s events. I don’t buy the Conspiracy Stuff though. It’s too wacky and doesn’t add up any better than what the 9/11 report says. The truth, as usual, it probably somewhere in between. It’s why I routinely encourage my students to get multiple sources and then logically reason their own opinions for themselves. I figure getting them to think rather than just accept what hey are given is the best we can do to prepare them for the real world. Unfortunately Wayne, the rules and regulations of the Administration expects them to to exactly the opposite. “Follow the rules” is the Public School System’s Philosophy. And teaching students that, well, we’re simply manufacturing sheep.

California’s rates of both STD’s and pregnancies among teenagers is much lower than Texas.
There has been a lot of research on this and even a study by Texas A&M has found that Texas’s program, which was implemented by Bush’s administration when he was governor, has been ineffective at preventing pregnancies and STD’s.

I hate what Karl Rove and some brand of Christian Fundamentalists have done to our country and politics. They have paralyzed progress and national security by focusing on their own self-righteousness.

May 5th, 2006 at 10:48 am#79 unbelievable,
When Pvt Lynch was first rescued, the Pentagon began putting out a story about how she fired her weapon until she emptied the clip, she fought hand-to-hand, and how the American troops that recovered her (it was more a recovery than a rescue) had a fierce fire fight outside the hospital.
All lies. By Pvt Lynch’s own account, most of her injuries were sustained in the accident when her truck rolled over. She didn;t “empty her weapon”, it got jammed and was pretty much useless. And the team that recovered her from the hospital met no resistance at all. In fact, doctors at the hospital had tried to return her to the American troops, but the vehicle they were in was fired upon by soldiers at an American checkpoint.
If the Pentagon had bothered to learn the facts, they never would have said all the things they did about her, unless the truth was irrelevant to the story they wanted to tell. This is not meant to take anything away from Pvt Lynch and her sacrifices. She is a brave woman, and I applaud her courage. But her real story does not match the Pentagon’s first “official” account which, judging by how inaccurate it was, they must have made up entirely.

May 5th, 2006 at 11:00 am#79 And as for the 9-11 “Conspiracy Stuff”, I would only ask that you remember a couple of things:
First, the offical explanation is a “Conspiracy Theory”, and I am concerned that people think of that term as a pejorative. It’s actually just nothing more than an accurate description. Yes, some “theories” are true tinfoil hat stuff, but some are factually accurate. (For example, the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre was a conspiracy.)
Second, while I admit that I am not ready to jump into the entire “Our government was behind the whole thing”-theory, I do believe that there are truths that the government just does not want us to find out, and their actions (and inactions) that day raise an awful lot of questions. As I’ve said before, if you start with the premise that nobody in our government knew anything about what was going to happen that day in any way, shape or form, then you have a story of an incredibly inept and incompetent government, and the official explanation leaves a lot of questions unanswered and raises new ones. But, if you start with the premise that, at the very least, some people in our government knew something of what might happen that day, then many of the perplexing things make more sense. It may be that this plot was planned entirely without our government’s help (though facts and eyewitness testimonies make that unlikely) but that the administration let it happen as part of the “New Pearl Harbor” they would need to implement their PNAC plans. In any case, I do not believe our government is completely innocent in all of this. I started going through http://www.loosechange911.com and I think you should too when you have the time. Also check out http://www.911truth.org. If nothing else, you should come away believing that whatever happened, it didn’t happen the way the 9-11 Commission said it did.
And while all of this might change the way you think about me, it doesn’t change what I think of you. You’re still on the side of good.

Comment by squegeeboo — May 5, 2006 @ 11:17 am
Not necessarily. The key is “self-described conservatives”. A lot of people describe themselves as “independents” or “moderates”. The 33% figure bundles all of them, as well as liberals, in with the conservatives to come up with 33% of the country. It just means that support among liberals and moderates must be well below 33% to make the whole country average out to 33%. (Assuming you believe in the validity of opinion polls in the first place, which I don’t.)
May 5th, 2006 at 11:29 am#106 – You’re getting your numbers mixed up.
The Ap-Ispos poll is done on a monthly basis. You’re comparing another poll where Pres. Bush’s approval ratings were 36-34% to the new Ap-Ispos poll.

I di understand why you’re getting confused, it’s because of all the times you hear “all-time low”. One week, it’s 36% is the lowest, then the next week 34% is the lowest. Each time you hear “all time low” it’s in relation to the same polling study.

Hes got you right where he wants you.
May 5th, 2006 at 11:42 amAfter reading the whole article about the poll, I had to share with everyone my favorite part:
“I think he’s the dumbest president we’ve ever had,” said Mark Rauzi, a conservative voter from Gillespie, Ill. “I disapprove of a lot of the stuff he’s doing. This war was a big boo boo and he won’t admit he did wrong.”
Other good news:
In addition, 27 percent of registered voters were strong Republicans just before the 2004 election, while only 15 percent fit that description today.
It keeps on coming. Regarding energy policy and gas prices:
Those who strongly disapprove outnumber those who strongly approve by an extraordinary 55 percent to 8 percent.
I’m happier and happier reading this:
In the past six decades, only one president had a lower job approval rating six months before a midterm election — Richard Nixon in May 1974, the year in which Watergate-scarred Republicans lost 48 seats in the House and four in the Senate.
This is VERY telling:
Nearly half of the public strongly disapproves of Bush, a huge jump from his 5 percent strong disapproval rating in 2002. The poll has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
May 5th, 2006 at 11:46 amIt’s great, it means he dosn’t have to worry about pleasing people, because he can’t.
Uh, it’s his job… It’s all about the people. Sure, some on the fringes are always unhappy, but you do understand that this means 68% – the majority in this case – no not approve.
And you do know that elections are based on approval, Squeegie?
So he can just stick to the business of running the country. Which he is doing the best of compared to any other president who served soley in the 21st century.

I’m tired of the argument of “he doesn’t have to worry about pleasing people.” If close to 70% of the people he is ‘leading’ think he’s doing a bad job, maybe…. JUST MAYBE, he’s actually doing a bad job.
Being decisive and determined is only a good quality if you are correct in your convictions and decisions. Otherwise, you’re being stubborn and stupid.
And as for Bush being the “best of compared to any other president who served soley in the 21st century,” you are correct. Being #1 on a list comprising a total of one person isn’t all that tough. Buildings are designed to handle certain stressed – both natural and unintentional. Wind and rain are examples of natural, while fire and plane crashes are unintentional. The towers wer designed to withstand a lot of natural and some anticipated unintentional stresses at the same time. When you build that high you have to consider these things – a benefit of having government oversight that some neocons would like to do without – as a result of building codes. One of these requirements is fir proofing. It’s applied to steel structural members to make them last long enough for people to get out of a building if it is on fire. Steel is easily compromised by temperature. It doesn’t have to melt to fail – just by weakened enough to no longer hold it’s intented load (itself and the rest of the building).
When the planes hit the towers, they possibly irradicated the fire proofing. It would make sense that they did because of the force (fireproofing is not designed for wind or high impact loads :). And although the buildings were designed to take the impact of a plane, they weren’t designed for the impact of planes this large (from the designers’ mouthes). As a result of losing fire proofing, it allowed the steel to become compromised enough that when the top portions of the building severed and began to fall (on top of the rest of the building), the destructive force of their weight in free fall was no match for the weakened interior steel columns. Because they were NOT designed for that type of stress, much less that type of stress in addition to the fire and the plane crash simultaneously – they collapsed.
As long as it is possible to collapse a building by excessive stresses (which it is), the notion that they were intentionally blown up as part of a government involvment in collapsing them is very absurd to me. And this is the notion of the majority of people in the profession. The few who dispute it are within the pecentages of the usual random few who always dispute everything.
(I hope I can stick around long enough for an answer. I’m at the garage getting my car fixed and it might actually be ready soon, more than five hours later.]

Have fun with that… :) Hope it’s nothing major!
May 5th, 2006 at 12:45 pm#133 yep all the fire had to do was weaken the structural steel and once one level started to collapse the rest would follow. The consiracists think the metal had to be melted to collapse and that is simply not the case. Additionally the WTC was not like other buildings. It’s stuctural support was all on the outside of the building. It was more like a bug with an exoskeleton, while other more traditional buildings are more like humans with internal skeletons. The exoskelton of the WTC was weakend by the plane gashing a hole in it and then by the intense heat which may not have melted the metal suppor, but it did definately weaken it.

May 5th, 2006 at 1:31 pmUm, it was the one that the pancake theory can’t be true, becuase people use syrup on pancakes, and no syrup was used to bring down the WTC, although the lack of syrup could be a gov’t coverup.
Allow me to repeat myself

May 5th, 2006 at 3:10 pmIf Iraq pumps between 2,000,000, to 1,000,000 barrels a day of oil, and the oil price is appx. $70/ barrel, that’s $140 to $70 million per day.
Who is getting that money? Where is that money going? Is it helping to pay for Iraq security, military, schools, hospitals, etc?
Is this money above and beyond what we are paying for the Iraq war?
Stupid question to be asking at this point, but is Iraq a war? It doesn’t seem to be in the traditional definition. When the history books are written and the kids start memorizing, what will it say? We attacked Iraq because ___?

I am actually proud that he is going to get needed help. I am also glad that he admitted he had a problem to the country.
The negatives
The cops didn’t go through procedure and let him go home. (What would happen if it was a republican here, what would be said about the cops then)?
Why did this get release on Friday Afternoon so that it can all be forgotten about by Monday?

May 5th, 2006 at 8:03 pmthe bus thing….another way of looking at it is that it makes it (potentially) unsafe for people/fans in regular buses. not a smart move in many regards.
on the other hand, over here, buses have numbers of some sort, right? — usually in connection with the bus line or owner. not to mention license plates. i wonder if that’s all true over there. since the buses were “presented†for all to see, it seems like the un-flagged bus is still pretty much a known entity, and the attempt at secrecy is flaccid at best.
why isn’t the UK bus unmarked? they just piggy-back on our ideas, anyway.
Comment by commander other

They’re the official team’s buses. Only the individual teams will use them. It’s a sad indictment that the US has taken this decision not to have the stars & stripes displayed on their team coach (when do the US give up the chance to show nationalistic pride). But if they want to standout from the rest, draw more attention to themselves, then that is their over-reaction prerogative.
As for the question as to why the UK’s team coach will not be unmarked? The England football team will be the only team from the UK at this year’s football World Cup in Germany. As Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, didn’t qualify for these years’ finals. Oh what a shame for Scottish football.
As for Great Britain piggy-backing on American ideas. Yes that is what we do, and fine damn ideas they’re to. George W. Bush is the master ideas tactician. If only Tony Blair was as bright as George W. Bush, then everything would just be super-dooper.
