Today on Good Morning America, Mary Cheney praised her father for his stance on the Federal Marriage Amendment, banning gay marriage:
“My father has made it very clear. … That freedom means freedom for everyone,” Mary Cheney said. “He’s stated … his opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment, which I think is a very big deal.”
Ms. Cheney is right, her father did state his personal opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment, which was commendable. The big problem was that he also supported President Bush, who argued strongly in favor of the amendment. From the October 2004 Vice-Presidential debate:
CHENEY: Gwen, you’re right, four years ago in this debate, the subject came up. And I said then and I believe today that freedom does mean freedom for everybody. People ought to be free to choose any arrangement they want. It’s really no one else’s business…
Traditionally, that’s been an issue for the states. States have regulated marriage, if you will. That would be my preference.
In effect, what’s happened is that in recent months, especially in Massachusetts, but also in California, but in Massachusetts we had the Massachusetts Supreme Court direct the state of — the legislature of Massachusetts to modify their constitution to allow gay marriage.
And the fact is that the president felt that it was important to make it clear that that’s the wrong way to go, as far as he’s concerned.
Now, he sets the policy for this administration, and I support the president.
It’s not too late for Cheney. The Senate is expected to vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment on June 6. If Cheney truly believes that “freedom means freedom for everyone” he should speak out in opposition to the amendment.
Yeah right!
May 8th, 2006 at 1:59 pmWonder what Mary Cheney will do then?
May 8th, 2006 at 1:59 pmHe was against it before he was for it.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:02 pmI think it’s funny that they’re holding this vote on 6/6/06.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:05 pmdad doesn’t hate me cuz I’m gay, but he can’t say he loves me cuz I’m gay. he can’t say things in public, cuz his bosses say he can’t say anything about being gay, so he can’t say anything about it to me either.
wonder why I’m so screwed up? maybe cuz mom and dad are gay and they can’t talk about it to anyone either?
and we expect folks like this to understand the average citizen. this is just sad, and a pretty good indicator of what christianity does to people, makes them mean and righteous about anything someone else does. even when it is them.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:05 pmFlip-flop,flip-flop,flip-flop
May 8th, 2006 at 2:07 pmDon’t get married gay people, just rent a room at the Watergate, rent some same-sex prostitutes, and keep your beard or skirt for show like any good (R). Then vote against gay marriage on June 6th. Nobody will be the wiser.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:13 pmGay marriage, must be an election coming up soon.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:13 pm::shrugs:: I really can’t knock Cheney for this one. It takes considerable balls to go against the standard administration spin in the first place, but I guess it’s kind of a political ploy too in that he’s supporting his daughter and family values blah blah blah. But he CAN’T go against the President either, so call it flip flopping or fence-sitting or whatever else you want, I just don’t see how else he reallt could have handled talking about the issue, and either way it’s a no-win for him.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:15 pmI’m sorry I forgot Gay Marriage, World WarIII and Ramesh P.s’ new book “the Party of Death” are all right there Together to rally the party faithful.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:17 pmMary has more class than any of the Clowns in her Dad’s administration.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:17 pmI’m betting Dad will flip-flop faster than a speeding bullet. (Pun intended)
You know what would be sweet poetic justice, would be for one of the Bush twins to be a lesbian. I wonder what Georgie would do then?
May 8th, 2006 at 2:20 pmDoes flip-flopping on this issue mean you’re bi?
May 8th, 2006 at 2:25 pmOh this is a fun one…Cheney actually spoke out against the amendment…before he said he was for the amendment…anybody have a nice pair of flip flops Mary can borrow?

May 8th, 2006 at 2:30 pmThe Republican Party is very thankful for the Democrats who take this bait.
If not for the “knee-jerk” wing of the Democratic Party, this issue would remain an extraordinary low-priority issue (having nothing to do with the high-priority issues of Public Safety and Public Health, Foreign Relations and Iraq, Congressional Ethics, the Federal deficit and the trade deficit; issues that Republicans are terribly vulnerable on right now: high-priority issues).
Let’s all take the bait, and make “gay marriage” the big, high-priority issue, this fall; let’s play right into the Republican’s strategy, and help motivate their homophobic base, and drive that base to the polls (and away from Democrats), as they were partly driven in 2004 (9 states had “gay marriage ban” initiatives on their ballots? And those ballot initiatives all passed, all 9!)…
No wonder Evil triumphed in 2004; I remember when no sane Democrat took this bait, and played to this Republican strategy; I remember when this ridiculous issue was no political issue at all…
I remember the 2000 election; that’s how recent this “gay marriage” nonsense is, no one thought it an issue as recently as the 2000 election.
Republicans are very thankful for the “knee-jerk” Democrats; they make it much easier for Evil to win elections.
(I understand there’s a Republican Senator in Pennsylvania who’s making this issue a theme of his re-election campaign this fall; I had originally thought him an idiot for thinking Democrats would take such bait in an otherwise terribly vulnerable political climate for Republicans; but I made be wrong about that, maybe he knows Democrats better than I do; maybe he knows and can count on the “knee-jerk” wing; maybe Evil wins again.)
May 8th, 2006 at 2:32 pmthis post is just dreamland. i love TP, but stuff like this is as lunatic in its thinking as anything on michelle malkin and the rest. firstly, there is no chance that cheney will give his enemies any scope to drive a wedge between himself and the president. secondly, it is generally a contention of sites such as TP and Kos that Cheney TELLS the president what the policy is. do i have to explore what that fact, if you accept it, means with regard to the thrust of this post?
let’s move on from dreams of discord between VP and POTUS and come back to reality, where there are all kinds of better, more fruitful, lines of attack to pursue than nonsense like this.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:38 pmCheney is a big fat old hypocrite, so do NOT expect him to stand up for Gay rights issues!
May 8th, 2006 at 2:41 pmRepublicans would be rather stupid to try and use the “gay marriage will destroy the institution of marriage” this year. I think the combination of prostitutes, poker, and politicians at Watergate would really dilute that message. They might want to think twice about what is and isn’t destructive to marriage.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:45 pmNOt that I have a problem with prostitutes and poker, just think the righties are hypocrites.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:47 pmwell, a 50-50 split would be nice…then we would see if the heart of darkness will side with the kid or the war-criminal…
May 8th, 2006 at 2:57 pmThe sad thing is that the mainline GLBT organizations like HRC are not using such quotes as “Freedom means freedom for everyone” in their anti-FMA advertising. Their ads try and get the message across that the FMA will make GLBT people second-class citizens…which is what “Christian” America (read: those who support the FMA) wants.
Perhaps if mainline LGBT organizations started framing the issue themselves, instead if playing defense to the Republican framing of it, they might be more successful at garneing more support.
Freedom means freedom for everyone is the message they should promoting. They should be frmaing the issue as “A vote for the FMA is a vote to deny freedom to some of the people”.

May 8th, 2006 at 3:01 pmJune 6th 2006 is NOT a good day for anything > 6-6-6 is what that day means, so stay home in bed that day and buy nothing > lol.

Comment by Jay Randal — May 8, 2006 @ 3:18 pm
My mother had a customer come back to her and said “I can’t buy this as it is. Could you please change it? Even by one cent?”
The fabric the woman had purchased come out to $6.66. And the woman was FREAKED out big time. So my mother deducted a penny.
What an odd lot the superstitious human animal can be sometimes.
May 8th, 2006 at 3:27 pmThe United States and Iran should get married.
May 8th, 2006 at 3:27 pmI’m uncomforatable. Uncomforatable because some, who ostensibly state they want to bring Democrats back to “high priority” issues to save them.
So, by that advice, some would advise Democrats to sit on their hands and shut their mouths on this issue. Yea, that got us Democrats a lot of votes in 2000, 2002, & 2004. Let’s make the same statemnet and say nothing in 2006! That’ll really tell those dirty republithugs they can’t mess with Democrats!
Let’s look at the issue from my perspective, not some vulture who’d seemingly like nothing better than the Democratic Party to die & rot so they’d have something smelly to feast on…
I think Democrats would get votes if they just said they wanted equal rights for everybody. Leave it at that. Look at Massachusetts, it’s a non-issue there now. It’s the Rovebots that are bringing this up because they fear they’re gonna get killed this November (they will too). Don’t make this the # 1 issue. Make this just another issue. The #1 issue deserves to be the lying, cheating, bribe taking, whoreing Republican leaders and how they’ve only helped the uber-rich in America & hurt EVERYONE ELSE.
Sorry Dejavu – your advise sucks.
May 8th, 2006 at 3:33 pmOh yes, by all means, let’s turn our attention now to the number one issue in America – letting gays pretend to be “husbands” and “wives.” This reminds me of how Bill Clinton began his first term by dithering over “gays in the military.” I’m not the least bit surprised that the Left now wants to co-opt the traditional family right along with the U.S. military.
I can’t wait for this issue to reach the Supreme Court.
May 8th, 2006 at 3:34 pmDick Cheney must be taking lessons on flip-flopping from John Kerry. I wonder if Dubya will take him to the woodshed for getting “off message”?
May 8th, 2006 at 3:36 pmGosh, yes, DEJA VU, it’s soooo terribly politically short-sighted to support equal treatment under the law. Only knee-jerks would advocate that.
In any case, Cheny screwed it up — intentionally or otherwise — regarding Massachusetts. He said, “… in Massachusetts we had the Massachusetts Supreme Court direct the state of — the legislature of Massachusetts to modify their constitution to allow gay marriage.” The Supreme Court didn’t direct the legislature to do anything. The Supreme Court simply and correctly pointed out that the Massachusetts Constitution stipulates equal treatment under the law regardless of gender, which means that it was unconstitutional to bar same-sex couples from getting married. There were various attempts to dodge the awkward truth of that, and some misguided folks are still trying to change the Constitution itself to make their bias legal, but right now same-sex marriages are legally-recognized and somehow the sky hasn’t fallen yet.

May 8th, 2006 at 3:46 pmIt’s sad that you’re still as deluded by the Bush spin about Kerry being a flip flopper as the majority of people are. If you had really followed the news both leading up to and during the 2004 campaign, you would know that Kerry has actually been very straightforward and honest with the American people, and that’s a hell of a lot more than anyone can say for this administration.
I don’t see Bush having the “balls” to take Cheney to task.
and now for a few of our esteemed presidents flip-flops.

May 8th, 2006 at 3:49 pmyeah yeah yeah …cheney would deny his own mother for the money trove at the end of this corrupt regime.
Mary Mary your a little late on your stand up for Equal Rights under this Consitution but then again by the time this regime is over there won’t be much left to the Consitution… I am not Impressed…
May 8th, 2006 at 3:58 pmThis is all for the gay vote not that the GOP lost the spanish vote. Mary Cheney is doing what she can for her Dad even if it means turning her back on the Gay movement. I was wondering where does her and her partner of 14 years sleep at the good two shoes house of the great oil stealer Dick Cheney. To back this trick wont work try something else.
May 8th, 2006 at 4:03 pmWhy in the hell would they choose June 6th 2006 (6-6-6) for this marriage admendment banning Gays from getting hitched? I thought that is the day chosen by Bush to bomb Iran setting off WWIII?
May 8th, 2006 at 4:37 pm#34 – The gay marriage thing will distract everyone from WWIII.
May 8th, 2006 at 4:52 pm/sarcasm off
Who in the hell cares what the totally insane War Pig has to say.
May 8th, 2006 at 5:00 pmHis job approval rating is lower than his man-chimp’s. Nuff said.
Closet gays are the worst type of people…
Come out of the closet Dick! We know you do Karl everyday!
May 8th, 2006 at 6:08 pmGuess Dick is just a crazy shootin, flip-floppin sort of a guy…huh??
May 8th, 2006 at 6:31 pmThe kinds of things the Left has to say on this issue are always so-o-o-o-o uplifting and enlightening. Please, sir, may we have some more?
May 8th, 2006 at 7:06 pm#39 – BaStaRd,
May 8th, 2006 at 9:40 pmDC is a low-life bottom-feeding monster. W is his unwitting puppet (aka Pinocchio).
It must be like the film ‘The Birdcage’ when Dick Cheney’s daughter brings her girlfriends home to meet her parents.
Remember the film starring Robin Williams and Gene Hackman. Gene Hackman’s character plays Senator Kevin Keeley who is also the Vice-President of the Committee for Moral Order. His daughter is getting married to Robin Williams’ son. Williams’ plays the part of gay cabaret owner Armand Goldman. He and his drag queen companion agree to put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancé’s right-wing moralistic parents.
May 8th, 2006 at 11:14 pmThis is one of those issues that shows our Government at its worse.
May 9th, 2006 at 12:00 amKool-Aid Drinker!!!!!!
May 9th, 2006 at 6:14 amGannon and Cheney, both Gay.
But they are against gay marriage..Yet Cheneys daughter does have kids, so is she gay or Just Bisexual?
I think this is a Game. They want to keep the support of the ‘base’. But still keep the vote of the gay groups, or at least part of them. Hypocrites to the Nth Degree.
Why can’t these people speak truthfully?
Have they lied for so long that it’s impossible?
Do they realize how foolish they appear?
Corruption sex scandals all around them, yet they ignore it.
Weird.
May 9th, 2006 at 12:29 pmIm not gonna give cheney what he wants. Screw this.
Let a better fit group of people decide this, not the BUSH Hypocrites.
Back to the Corruption!!!!!
May 9th, 2006 at 12:32 pmElizabeth graduated from McLean High School in 1984. She received her bachelor’s degree from Colorado College and her Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1996.
Prior to attending law school, Cheney-Perry worked for the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development between 1989 and 1993. After 1993, she took a job at Armitage Associates LLP, the consulting firm founded by Richard Armitage, then a former Defense Department official who later served as Deputy Secretary of State.
After graduating from law school, Cheney practiced law in the private sector and as an international law attorney and consultant at the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group. She has also served as Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State for Assistance to the former Soviet Union, and as a USAID officer in U.S. embassies in Budapest and Warsaw.
She and husband Perry have four children: three daughters, Kate (b. 1994), Elizabeth (b. 1997), and Grace, and a son, Philip Richard (b. July 2, 2004)
May 9th, 2006 at 1:17 pmWe’re talking about Mary Cheney, not Elizabeth Cheney.
May 9th, 2006 at 1:42 pmYet Cheneys daughter does have kids, so is she gay or Just Bisexual?
Comment by KHRISTOL KHAGANS
Cheney has two daugthers: Elizabeth, who is married with kids, and Mary who lives with a woman, I believe, named Heather.

Stop bashing perfectly normal homosexuals and go back to your kiddie porn sites. It’s not about gays pretending or playing house, it’s about basic human rights and equality.
Tonight, if you can still make love to your nasty wife and you hear her moaning, just remember she’s the one who’s been pretending all along.
May 12th, 2006 at 4:44 pm#4 good point – holding the vote on 6/6/06. That way if they don’t like the outcome they can say it is the mark of the beast.
But according to many racist fear mongers/born again so called christians they believe that is the actual day the world will end.
Guess we’ll see either way.
But I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for Krash-Kart to do the right thing.
June 2nd, 2006 at 6:39 pmWhether or not Mary Cheeney has kids only concerns Mary Cheeney and her partner. Whether or not Mary Cheeney is gay/bi/or martian is no ones concer but hers.
When you people put as much effort into your own lives as you do gay peoples, then the world will be a better place.
I just pray for the day when everyone will have to ask the government whether or not they have the RIGHT to live with someone, marry someone or have sex with them.
And believe me, given the current speed and course of this so called administration, that day is approaching faster than you care to admit.
Mission accomplished – fear/hate/intolerance/biggotry/racism – dumbya’s favorite words and tools to use to get the sheeple to do his deeds.
This is more about controlling the low poll numbers than anything else. If you believe otherwise you are dumb.
June 2nd, 2006 at 6:45 pmAnd for those of you out there so worried about gays/blacks/muslims/mexicans:
When you die and go to Heaven and ring that door bell, what will you do when God answers the door and she is a black jewish lesbian?
I bet you will hope she has more love and forgiveness in her heart than you did in yours while on earth.
