Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson is already under fire for claiming he cancelled a government contract with a business because the CEO was critical of President Bush. But that’s not the only contract corruption scandal his department is wrapped up in.
Shirlington Limousine and Transportation Inc. is the firm that defense contractor Brent Wilkes used to “transport congressmen, CIA officials, and perhaps prostitutes to his Washington parties.” Shirlington’s president, Christopher Baker, has a “lengthy history of illegal activity,” detailed in his 62-page rap-sheet, and his limo company “operates in what looks to be a deliberately murky way,” with multiple, regularly-changing addresses, many of which were actually at residential buildings.
Despite all of this, Shirlington recently won a HUD contract worth $519,823. (Shirlington was also awarded a massive $21 million contract “to provide transportation, including limo service for senior officials” for the Homeland Security Department last fall.)
Today, Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) sent a letter to Secretary Jackson urging him to make public all information pertaining to Shirlington limo:
I request that you release all documents and communications in your possession pertaining to any HUD contracts with Shirlington Limousine. Thorough examination of these documents is critical to eliminating suspicion of inappropriate or illegal activity in awarding Shirlington Limousine a federal contract. I also ask you to clarify your comments regarding the eligibility of Administration opponents to compete for federal contracts.

I typed this in the wrong forum… (as you can tell) Always wondered how that happened. Just thought I drove to the right place… but while we are here.. I don’t think it’s impossible. Simply because Corporate America decides who to pick, and lets face it, both Hillary and Jeb are hand puppets. C.A. likes puppets. I think we need to hope that the George Soroses and Googles and Starbucks of the country will contribute to an Independent campaign (though Gore has been working his butt off since 2000 and is now pretty loaded himself – with a network of green and progressive friends).

I think we have to be realistic. V.P. is probably more plausible. Gore has already won once, and he has really improved over the last 6 years. Plus, did you catch his last speech? He’s no pansy himself these days. A few more like that and the Republicans will be chanting his name in 2008.
May 10th, 2006 at 4:05 pmFeingold is the only person I will vote for. If he is not on the ballot I will write him in.

and no more Hales!!
Devil’s advocates out there – seriously – someone explain to me how it would be possible for HUD to ever require a half-million-plus dollar contract for ‘limos and transportation’. Even if it proves to be legit (i.e., no hookers or blow), isn’t the size of the contract alone worthy of scandal status, even though it pales in comparison to the DHS $21M contract…?
May 10th, 2006 at 4:28 pm“Christopher Baker… and his limo company “operates in what looks to be a deliberately murky way,†with multiple, regularly-changing addresses, many of which were actually at residential buildings.” – - Oh, so Christopher Baker is Tony Soprano.

Sorry, cannot do it for less than 21mil!
May 10th, 2006 at 4:31 pmUNBELIEVABLE… what is your take on Joe Biden for Pres??. with his experence on the Foreign Relations committee maybe he can get some diplomacy back on track.
May 10th, 2006 at 4:53 pm#27, if anything a cabinet post…like most of the front runners he seems to support corporate interests over peoples
May 10th, 2006 at 4:56 pmbushllit… just wondering what instances you may have? making my way through to a viable candidate is driving me crazy!!
May 10th, 2006 at 5:14 pmMeg,
Since the Presidential election is a officially popularity contest for 90% of the voting public, I think Biden probably doesn’t have the charisma and likeability that is necessary to win. And we need to bet our marbles on someone who can. Gore already has. I think he could be a landslide if he played his cards correctly. Lieberman was bad running mate because he has no charisma and zero personality. Probably would have been a different outcome if he’d chosen differently.
And you know, since the single woman is the majority in the voting demographic, unfortunately, looks probably do make a difference. Especially in our culture that insists that that demographic should be looking for a husband – so much so that a lot of single women judge most men by the same criteria for which they’d chose a husband (good father, handsome, charming, tall, youthful, etc.). The caveat being ultra conservative women. Strong Republicans see money. It’s probably the only reason Dick Cheney got elected – or married. :)

I agree with that.
May 10th, 2006 at 5:17 pmmeg,
sorry had some work, instances..no, my comment came from my impression of him from the sunday morning talk shows, though he seems to resist the right, he was still all for iraq, and still supports the war (just not the handling of it) I also remember him being the force behind clinton to act in the balkens which makes him seem too gun-ho to run the country, expecially after the direction its been in, I don’t mind someone strong on security and humanitarian intervention…but to justify iraq is just wrong
…plus his comb over really gets under my skin…he reminds me of a facade where as long as he knows where the camera is and is positioned correctly, he is ok – but i’ve seen him on cspan and other news shows where he is walking to the podium or the camera is behind him and its just ridiculous
…all in all, i think he is a good guy, on the right side of a lot of battles, but he is not the strongest canidate we have to lead the country
May 10th, 2006 at 5:44 pmMother (meg_mac),
You posting again!! Get off the computer, and play with your grand children!!! Just kidding!!! :D

May 10th, 2006 at 5:47 pmWhat an awesome last name… “Slaughter.” So hardcore.
May 10th, 2006 at 6:39 pmWhat, they don’t have any reliable ‘mass-transit’ options in D.C.? And haven’t they ever heard of car-pooling? And why do DHS senior officials require transportation by Limo? Seems excessive to me. Take a cab, why don’t they? Or try driving your own damn car!! Another ’shady’ contract for a BushCo crony? Am I supposed to be surprised?
May 11th, 2006 at 1:36 amPost 36 Cyra > That Limo company also supplies prostitutes for clients > they did for Rep. Duke Cunningham at the Watergate hotel! It’s probably a package deal: rent a Limo and you get a hooker of your choice > female or male > lol.
May 11th, 2006 at 2:19 amThanks, Morals and Values crowd! Don’t you jerks ever slam a Viet Nam Veteran again for exercising his right to free speech and protest of a corrupt and murderous war!!! Swiftboat yourselves you perverts!!! (I’m talking about Jackson and his repug buddies)

May 11th, 2006 at 4:11 amKudos to Slaughter for going after Jackson! Show him the door, just like NASA’s “My job is to make the president look good” Deutsch. He is a disgrace. Question: Did Phonzie only hire pro-Bush bush, or was it just an oral agreement?
May 11th, 2006 at 5:25 amMr. Jackson if you’re nasty…
