51%.

Percentage of Americans who disapprove of the NSA program disclosed Thursday by USA Today, according to a new poll by the paper. 43% approve of the program.

33 Responses to “51%.”

  1. Marley, Brooklyn, NY says:

    Now, that makes more sense.
Where did the 63% approval rate go?
Down the drain, like the Bush Admnistration.

  2. WaltTheMan says:

Why are so few people concerned about their rights?

  3. Mack MacKenzie says:

I am sure that that percentage will go up and up as more and more people become aware of how wide spread the BushCo spying on Americans compaign truly is!

    BushCo = LIARS!

  4. james risser says:

    #2

    they are not concerned because

    a. they do not understand their right-to-privacy

    b. they think it is only significant to tony soprano and to black people because white people and rich people don’t have anything to hide

    c. they have no sense of history.

    d. they haven’t enough intelligence to understand the slippery slope these fascists are evolving

    e. they believe in the fuhrer and know that he is going to take good care of him if they only trust him

    f. they suffer from a condition similar to the battered wife syndrome

    g. they are completely ignorant of life as we know it

    h. they are radical religious extremists that do not believe anyone else in the world matters.

just a handful of ‘whys’; feel free to add to the mix….

    have a nice day!

  5. Badmoodman says:

#2: The poll has a margin of error of plus/minus Who Cares?

  6. WaltTheMan says:

This brings to mind, “The Walrus and the Carpenter” from Lewis Carroll. We are playing the part of the oysters:

PSSSSSSST! QUIET! DON’T TELL THE WASHINGTON POST!!!!!

  8. Lily says:

James, to an extent, I believe your reasons. But 43%???

  9. jules says:

The approval level depends on how the questions were asked. If they leave out the magic word “terrorist” people disapprove of being wiretapped. How can anyone trust THIS administration?

  10. Marie says:

I am with you, Walt #2.
This is a more realistic poll, but what in the hell is wrong with people? Why isn’t this 85%?
Perhaps #4 james risser has it right, but nonetheless, it’s hard to accept the 43% who don’t mind this blatant abuse of power.

  11. wisedup says:

If the 43% were sat down and someone explained it clearly…it would go to “0″%.

  12. Matt bors says:

Only half the country disapproves of this?

    Not exactly encouraging.

Probably don’t actually approve but thought it had something to do with american idol, you know the important stuff, CNN was pumping Ryan Seacrest and the reichwing idiot on headlines news was talking about american idol…wonder if they are worried that too many are no longer interested in the fluff, and mindless drivil that goes for Television watching?

  14. Colorado Jyms says:

Wow, that is very similar to the amount of people who voted for Dubya. It is interesting that it took 1 1/2 years for almost half of those people to realize they were sold a bill of goods that are rotten.

  15. The Muse says:

I still don’t get these polls. Way off base, maybe they’re asking the wrong question…

    Your Own Government-owned Cyberganger

…it was with considerable consternation that I read in today’s Washington Post that 63 percent of those asked in a hasty survey were okay with King George’s latest venture…

As I read that perplexing poll, I could not help but think how they might have phrased the question in a way that would awaken America to the seriousness of this. Maybe, “if George W. Bush were to reach inside the waistband of your undies and grope around, would you approve?”

  16. Colorado Jyms says:

Come on you guys…. Only half of the country voted for this ass clown. Please. We have to admit that the majority of the American Public (51%+) don’t read the paper and are swayed by the right wing slant of Limbaugh, O’Reilly and Fox News.

It took 1 1/2 years for his approval to go from 53% to 29%. The question is, now that a good portion of GOP’ers are on to this fox in sheeps clothing, will it take them 1 1/2 years to realize what they are losing in the NSA spying programs…?

  17. hadenough says:

    Colorado Jyms,

Social Security phase out was shot down pretty quick. The ungodly Terri Schivo nightmare ended about as quick as it started. The Medicare give away to big phrama was a disaster from the start.

Too much blood and treasure under the bridge now. Stick a fork in’em. The gop are done.

  18. the fly-man says:

How many people voted in the election? Wasn’t it like 122million? 809 people out of 122 million what is that .000007% Why is any body sweating these numbers? Shot gun polls are suspect at best.

  19. Alex says:

: ) That seems like a rather 50-50, even number.

    Bono is Brian Peppers!

  20. WaltTheMan says:

    #18 – the fly-man,
You just flunked third grade math. Even with your inputs, the number would be .0007%.

  21. Lily says:

Clif, on a similar note: I was visiting some friends for a couple of days. The TV was on, my ears perked when I heard about this latest Constitutional crisis…maybe 15 seconds worth before the channel was promptly changed to Surviver.

  22. Jack says:

    I hate polls.

Want 10 different answers, do 10 separate polls.

This day in age, why aren’t we actually getting out and meeting with the people, maybe having a series of debates here and there. It seems academicians and pollsters sit in their clinical ivory towers pushing the beads up and down on their professional abacus. They yell out numbers to questions that have been carefully crafted and examined by a team of consultants. But no one actually goes out into the real world, with real people — which is why everyone was glued to their boob-tubes during Katrina when reporters actual went out into the real world and we saw what was happening in the real world to real people, and not through the lenses or numbers located at some very expensive ivory tower in some isolated location.

  23. the fly-man says:

Walt sorry about that, I had too many zeros. Too many Mother’s days beverages. Thanks. So do you still get my point ?

  24. napu says:

43%…Americans are still making excuses. 29% approval rating but 43% approve of this illegal act. I don’t see any hope. I thought we Americans were little smarter than this. But right now, world view of us seem to be right.

We are too stupid to be saved.

  25. Jay Randal says:

I am one of the 51% and proud of it too! The 49% who approve of having their phones wiretapped should have the audio tape recordings of their calls broadcast on TV news! Let’s hear them talking about sex, meatloaf, and crossdressing > lol.

  26. Jay Randal says:

Correction the 43% who approve > I guess 6% are confused or clueless > lol.

  27. james risser says:

well, we’ll just have to see if some of these supporters of the lawless idiots and their disregard for the people, change their tune in the next week or two….

    the market’s falling, the market’s falling…

    hehehehehhheheheheh

come on down to the gutter, boys! we may not have much money, but we sleep much better than you… hehehehhehehehehehehe

    the dollar is a loser…

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial index fell 262 points over Thursday and Friday to 11381, setting off contagion in Japan and Europe. The FTSE 100 had its worst drop in three years on Friday, falling 129.9 points, or 2.2pc, to 5912.1.

Analysts said there were now clear signs that monetary tightening by the world’s central banks was starting to crimp growth. Lombard Street Research warned the US was now heading into outright recession, with China also facing a hard landing.

“Stock markets in the middle of 2006 are confronting a tight Federal Reserve and European Central Bank, sharply higher bond yields, and a downswing in potential profits,” it said.

It raised the risk of “an impending financial crisis” caused by excess credit and leverage across the global economy. The group advised investors to liquidate stocks and move into cash yen until the storm has blown over.

The dollar has slumped 6pc against the euro and 8pc against the yen this year as the markets anticipate an end to interest-rate rises by the US Federal Reserve, switching attention back to America’s debt mountain and current account deficit of 7pc of GDP.

Volkmar Hable, chairman of Samarium Technology, said the world was now on the brink of a dollar crisis.

“The crash in the autumn of 1987 started with a massive dollar and bond decline in the spring. We are experiencing exactly the same now,” he said.

  28. james risser says:

a brief article from middle east forex today:

    GCC should drop dollar

A unified GCC currency should be pegged to a basket of different currencies and not the US dollar, according to BNP Paribas foreign exchange strategy global head Hans Redeker quoted in Gulf Daily News.

He said that a peg to the dollar, which he expects to be a weak currency in the long term, would leave Gulf economies too exposed.

    ______
the gcc is the gulf cooperation council: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates

  29. noneofyoubusiness says:

To those who are among the ones who approve of the spying within the country, the next question should be “What is your phone number?”, or “Could I have your S.S.#?” Quickly they would defend the privacy of such information, and would refuse to answer such questions. And if they understood what the government wants to do with the myriads of information they get, contrary to the official bs they give everyone, those who are being interviewed for their opinion would quickly change their mind.

  30. jurassicpork says:

To keep ya’ll amused until word comes out that Rove actually did get indicted Friday, Paul Krugman’s newest is up, in which he reminds us that today’s the last day to sign up for the notorious Medicare Plan D, which the GOP used to funnel another several billion back to the HMO’s.

I should have Bob Herbert up later this afternoon.

  31. walter66 says:

Able Danger, Able Danger, Able Danger………..howcum those like Rep. Curt Weldon and Fox news who called for the “outing” of the pentagon data mining program Able Danger are not being called terrorist sympathizers and traitors?

  32. Stupid Republicans says:

I am very concerned. Again Bubble boy has broken the law.

Americans should be asked if it concerns them that the Bubble boy breaks laws when he sees fit.

    That’s the real issue here.

  33. just me says:

Results are based on telephone interviews with 809 National Adults

Poll more people, perhaps the results will change.
