Rove On Bush: ‘People Like Him, They Respect Him, He’s Somebody They Feel A Connection With’

Today in his speech at the American Enterprise Institute, Karl Rove claimed that the most credible polls on President Bush are run by the RNC, and they are saying the American public likes him:

But the polls I believe are the polls that get run through the RNC. And I look at those polls all the time. The American people like this president. His personal approval ratings are in the 60s. Job approval is lower. And what that says to me is that people like him, they respect him, he’s somebody they feel a connection with, but they’re just sour right now on the war. And that’s the way it’s going to be.

Rove should look at some polls done by non-political organizations. They paint a very different picture:

55 percent have an unfavorable opinion of Bush. [CBS/NYT, 5/4-8/06]

60 percent have an unfavorable opinion of Bush. [USA Today/Gallup, 4/28-30/06]

52 percent have a somewhat or very negative opinion of Bush. [NBC News/WSJ, 4/21-24/06]

57 percent have an unfavorable opinion of Bush. [CNN, 4/21-23/06]

Looks like Rove and the First Lady are in denial.

Just keep telling yourself that, it may come in handy when the republicans are back to square one, and control nothing. As for you, America is a big place with a number of disparate views. One of those views, which has a growing consensus, is Bush and the republican party are doing a poor job. but please antagonist continue to make the bubble smaller and smaller. Clever, but even that would be a bold exaggeration.

  56. Wally O'Brien says:

Gee if you only look at polls run through the RNC, I can believe that only 60% of the people approve of Bush.

Consider who you’re polling. Rabid Republians.

Let’s see when Bush got elected by 50% of the voters, assume he had 100% approval from those voters. When his overall approval rating went down to 40%, that means 80% now approved of him. So I can believe the 60% figure, when the overall approval rating is hovering around 30% of the U.S.

So what are they going to do when his overall approval rating gets below 24.5%? That will mean that only 49% of the people who voted for him still approve of him.

If you start extending this to the percentage of register voters who actually voted. The vast number of people who don’t bother to vote, etc.

What would you guess Bush real approval is? 8%

    • They like him because he has reversed fifty years of legal regulation on their activities.

    • The respect him because he gives them huge tax breaks.

    • They feel a connection to him because in their hearts they know he’s white.

  60. Yachts and Lattes says:

I guess Rove doesn’t mind being on the wrong side of history. a href=”http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/05/12/bush.clinton.poll/”>Public opinion is already jelling around the conclusion that Clinton was better than Bush on the economy, foreign affairs, natural disasters, uniting the country, and honesty (though that one was within the MoE). Misusing the National Guard on the border with Mexico to compensate for the misuse of them in Iraq isn’t going to help. Even though I’m still nervous about 2006 and 2008, I think Bush’s legacy will be one of incompetent corruption (or is it corrupt incompetence?). His job approval ratings are on the Nixon/Carter level, and to get out of there he’s going to have to either die or win the Nobel Peace Prize.

  61. val says:

Hey, Antagonist. I live in Mobile f’ing Alabama, about as red a place as you can get. And Bush is not that popular even here. It used to be you’d get rude stares if you made a negative reference to Bush in the way people naturally do when they casually talk about the government. Not anymore. Letters to the editor and calls to the media from the kinds of folks who are almost knee-jerk reflexively Republican, the kind who despise the librul media and talk about Democrats the way you do — or used to — are getting much more negative about Bush. At the very least they think he’s an incompetent moron. And more are disagreeing with his policy positions, sometimes from the right (the immigration issue) and sometimes from both sides (free trade, privacy). Rove and Laura are living in Fantasyland. Me, I’d rather live in that alternate universe on SNL with President Gore. Unfortunately, I have to suffer through this one people like you and your pathetic leader have built. Thanks for nothing.

    Comment by Wally O’Brien — May 15, 2006 @ 4:06 pm

There’s got to be a lower bound. I heard in a recent poll 10% of Americans think Satan is behind the popularity of the book/movie The Da Vinci Code. I don’t know if they’re wholly part of the 29% or not; I’m just saying 100% concensus on anything is statistially impossible.

Our constitution, and bill of rights is what has made the US unique for over 200 years. I don’t believe that a bunch of fanatics in the deserts of the middle east are capable of destroying us. We however are capable of destroying ourselves through fear and isolation.

Krazy – 200 years in the Muslim mind is not much. I agree with you that our unique way of life is strong but like all things, it is not invincible and must be protected. Several strategically placed nuclear weapons in the hands of President AmIdeadyet of Iran would have a devastating effect on America – and I argue that we would come under stringent and awful totalitarianism to guard against the “enemy among us”. I don’t want that outcome.

I view this time historically as similar in degree with the Civil War but with the increase in population, shifts in population, modern communications, and increased layering of bureaucracy, it is a wholly different time. I realize the IAEA and elBaradai are wanting to believe Iran – but for now, I am hoping Israel will NEVER knowingly allow Iran to complete such weaponry or delivery systems.

  105. Krazny says:

Iran is at best 10 years from completion of nuclear weapon, and any use of a such a weapon would result in the near total destruction of the region, I sincerely doubt even he is crazy enough to use one. Another factor not often considered, is the Iranian president is elected by the people of Iran, with the permission of some sort of ruling religious council. It is very conceviable, that Mr. unpronounceable will be gone shortly.

If you are worried about foreign terrorists smuggling such a weapon into the US, then we should beef up port and border security. We should also have an aggressive and mobile military force able to track and intercept terrorists around the world. We should also be working with countries to freeze bank accounts and funding. Furthermore, we should switch our energy dependence to something besides oil. By purchasing oil from the middle east, we are not only excasperating the very situation we need to avoid, we are also indirectly funding the very people who want us dead.

I also have issue, with the idea the we need to eliminate the basic freedoms granted by the constitution and the bill of rights. We can fight an enemy without losing our soul. Flexibility can be given to law enforcement, and intelligence agencies to combat terrorists, without losing the 4th amendment.

The leftist leader made his remarks on Monday at a joint news conference with London Mayor Ken Livingstone after a reporter for the BBC likened some comments of his to Bush’s phrase, first delivered shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks, “You are either with us or against us in the fight against terror.”

At that, Chavez erupted in anger about being “compared to the biggest genocide person alive, in the history of humanity, the president of the United States — killer, genocidal, immoral — who should be taken to prison by an international court. I don’t know to what you are referring when you compare me to President Bush.”

He added: “Have I invaded any country? Have Venezuelans invaded anything? Have we bombarded a city? Have we had a coup d’etat? Have we used the CIA to kill a president? Have we protected terrorists in Venezuela? That’s Bush!”

hollinger is famous for having two of my ‘favorite’ war-criminals on their board: Henry Kissinger, and Richard Perle…. so, with any luck, this will be ‘not just another neoconservative scandal’ and actually go somewhere good. looks like kissinger may have to be as careful about landing at o’hare almost as much as has to worry about landing in the eu…

Evenutally, as even the most ignorant of us come to see what’s really been going on, there will be voices that replace those of the Rush Limbaugh’s and Michael Savages. In fact, I’ve got it on good authority that Savage’s ratings are so bad that he’s about to lose a lot of his syndicated stations, and Limbaugh has been on a slow decline for several years.

So when the next guy comes along spewing hate, Antagonist will get on board. We should never worry about people like him. They are ultimately nothing without a strong leader (hopefully with a little brush mustache and shiny uniform). They will spend their lives moving from one talk radio host to another. But do something? Never. I’m guessing that Antagonist doesn’t even vote.

I can’t believe wingnuts are still using the “Bush hater” line – they really don’t know how controlled it shows them to be.

Anyone who hasn’t turned their critical thinking over to Rush, Hannity, Sabage and Fox and all their cult leaders knows that it is just a mind control technique to allow the cult of conservatism to ignore the issues being talked about. They have to make out like the person’s opinion is subhuman and below the cults reality.

The Moonies use the same technique. Just have the cult accuse the other side of being a “hater” or of not wanting to give father Moon a breakand the cult mind controlled can rationalize away anything.

In the case of wingnuts, they are conditioned to rationalize treason for instance.

Rove is talking to the cult. He means that when polling members of the cult of conservatism, they still love Father Moon,,,, er ah, Bush.

  138. Haha says:

    133

Tony Snow is another member of the cult who is a SMMTB. A Sun Myung Moon Tittie Baby.

Snow not only helped Moon train the right’s minds – taking Moon cash for helping the right’s Savior push our nation right as their Savior, Moon, intended, but Snow traveled to Korea to speak before a Moon front group in 1995.

The Washington Times is the conservative’s mind trainer, funded with BILLIONS of bucks Moon swindled from the Japanese, targeting widows.

Sick shit but that is how they gained power. Without their Savior’s billions, conservatives are still called Birchers, theocrats, and fascists. Funny how the right absorbed Moon’s homophobic theocratic agenda.

Conservative’s like to brag about “winning” elections, when the fact is that without their savior Moon, they are nothing. Moon brags about using the Washington Times to “influence” our country. Of course he had to have conservative tools going along with his vision to do it.

Bow to your savior conservatives, he molded your minds and screwed our nation all at the same time.

Whatever Karl’s been drinking or smoking, he should pass it around…that’s stuff’s SERIOUSLY powerful. Talk about La-La-land…

What I couldn’t get over was the fact that Karl apparently blames all of Dubya’s bad poll numbers on the War in Iraq. I mean…EARTH TO KARL!! Dubya is a one-trick-pony, and he’s been coasting almost exclusively on the War in Iraq for the past four years. The War is probably the only reason that his poll numbers haven’t collapsed quicker than this. The reason why Dubya’s poll numbers have held out this long is probablly because for the past four years, Americans have been bombarded almost constantly with the message (sometimes subtle, sometimes not) that the United States would be a smoking wasteland by now if it weren’t for Bush — that supposedly, he’s the only thing standing in between us and another terrorist attack and that he’s the only one who can stop them. you don’t have to look too far or think about it too hard to realize that this fear has been more than enough to encourage a lot of Americans into giving him their blind support. It’s only now, when the War In Iraq comes closer to resembling a second Vietnam with each passing day and when gas prices continue to rise, that the gilt is starting to come off the gingerbread…

  146. Rich Cohen says:

Karl Rove (and Tom Delay) do not believe they are serving 100 percent of the US citizenry. They believe that they represent the interests only of their “majority”. So it is quite consistent for Karl to claim that 60 percent of this population favors Bush. The rest of us, the other 50 percent of the US population — we just don’t count.

  147. perplexed says:

Uh… Karl that works out to under 30 percent. Oh I get It! You were using your political genius to insult our intelligence. WOW you really are good! Nice frozen grimace by the president. Having a bad day? week? month? our boys are dying for lies! @#$%@#$#%

I thought that Karl was supposed to be “Bush’s Brain”. So he only pays attention to polls conducted by the RNC? What the %&#^? Are you kidding me? I bet he only watches Faux News too.

Maybe we shouldn’t be too intimidated by “The Architect”, since it seems he is living in a bubble just like Dubya & Dick. Of course, his pending indictment should put him out of commission for a while, but if he seriously believes that the American people “like” Bush he’s nuts! So what if the RNC pimps a 60% personal approval rating? Did they include ANY people outside of the GOP in their poll? How can that one poll by a partisan group trump more scientific and nationwide polls that put Dubya at about 29% approval?

Look, the whole “personal approval” bit is really meaningless. Sure, Dubya might be likeable in person, maybe even fun to have a drink with, but he is completely inept and incompetent as president. He simply is unqualified for the job! Too bad that voters didn’t figure that out in 2004!!

RNC polls you have to pay the RNC to count your vote., I was on the Republican mailing list and recieved many RNC surveys, I only had to make a donation for my opinion to count. 60% is a low number for people who support the RNC

  156. Jack says:

All of this is, alas, terribly familiar. As John DiIulio, the former head of Mr. Bush’s faith-based initiative, told Esquire, “What you’ve got is everything – and I mean everything – being run by the political arm.” Ideology and cronyism take complete precedence over the business of governing.

And that’s why when it comes to actual policy as opposed to politics, the Bush administration has turned out to have the reverse Midas touch. Everything it gets its hands on, from the reconstruction of Iraq to the rescue of New Orleans, from the drug benefit to the reform of the C.I.A., turns to crud.

Rather than welcome contrary opinions and use them to refine his own thinking, Bush operates from the premise that his “gut” judgments are right and all they require is that the American people get in line behind him.

Bush then views any continued criticism as evidence of disloyalty. While Bush will tolerate people voicing disagreement, he feels they should pay a steep price, exacted by Bush’s loyalists inside and outside the government.

So, when Bush’s supporters malign his critics as “traitors” and spit out other hate-filled expressions bordering on exhortations to violence, Bush sees no obligation to rein in the intimidating rhetoric.

Instead, Bush almost seems to relish the punishments meted out to Americans who dissent.

Yesterday I listened to a young man on the radio who said it is liberals that hate America, and he used as his proof that his freedom of speech was being infringed upon because he could not preach for his hatred against gays. The Bush administration, and especially Karl Rove, create an environment for this to grow, against many, and pander to this hatred of all sorts and worse. We need to heal the Nation not pull it apart, how can one respect a person that is destroying our way of life. People are dying in Iraq, people died on the streets in New Orleans, people died in coal mines, fear is stoked, truth is no where. Character counts. He is not governing. He is biding his time and gaining power for himself and cronies. What is there to respect? What is there to be connected with? What is there to like? He has a job to govern all people of this country, and he ain’t doing the job.

  157. big papa says:
