There were no laws restricting immigration from Mexico– or anywhere outside Asia– until the 1920s. Even after 1882, when some restrictions starting creeping in, basically anybody with the price of a boat ticket or the wherewithal to cross the land border could come, pay a tiny fee (50 cents), so long as they weren’t obviously diseased. We started processing immigrants so that they could prove residency in order to meet naturalization requirements (2-14 years, depending on the era), not primarily to keep immigrants out. That changed when eugencists (the intellectual forebears of today’s groups like FAIR) won the debate. Tom Tancredo’s grandaddy managed to get in before the shut the doors, now he’s there promoting walls to keep this generation of workers out.

Who has the innate courage to charge the Bush brothers with ”Treason” and follow up on their trials? Think about it?

And lastly, why had the Homeland Security Forces been assigned at Pier 92 in New York City on 9/10? Wake up dumb Americans, it is much later than anyone of us care to actually think of! A veteran of the Korean Conflict who deals ‘ONLY’ in facts and evidence without exception! God bless you all……….

I agree with everyone that has posted to “deport” Gonzales and his family. But while we are at it, let’s deport everyone that immigrated to this country illegally. But wait, if there were no laws back then, I guess it wasn’t illegal to immigrant on the Mayflower or via Ennis Island. So that makes it okay? Deport everyone that is a descendant of an immigrant. What would we be left with then? not too many of us, that’s for sure!

As an elected official of the Democratic Party in middle America, I am concerned about recent developments on the immingration front. While I support the individules right to migrate, I feel they should do so legally. This problem has all of the earmarks of the causes for a “Second Civil War” in this country. Our values have never histoicly accepted by the majority of the world, and most certainly the whole of our hemisphere. Why do we ignore the need for political changes in our region, while we attempt to force our views on others on the other side of the globe?

My relatives came here from Russia when the land bridge was still there.They had to fight saber-tooth-tigers,wooly mammoths etc. Settling was hard back in those days as there were no Wally Words/Starbucks, but the persevered and settled in Gulf Coast area of Northern Alabama. Following the receding waters, they canoed down to Panama City Beach,and have been there ever since!

They viiolated Mexican government laws. The Mexican government could not control the borders. Eventually they outnumbered the locals, and started a bloody revolution.

I wish history books told the true story of the harsh conditions most of our ancestors endured in order to create our comparatively comfortable existence today. Respect that history, and donâ€™t tell me my ancestors came here illegally, for they did not.

So do I. Many don’t know about the Spanish Land Grants. My own family came here in 1603 granted land by the King of Spain. I live in New Mexico. Some of our families are descendants of the conquistadores. They have continually lived in the continental US since 1598. It is very common in Northern NM to hear Colonial Spanish being spoken. My own grandfather, a 14th generation New Mexican, could neither read nor write English. Yet his “folks” got here well before that Mayflower hit the shores of New England. I wish history books would tell that story.

Gonzales caught in the Republican hypocrisy- the truth will out.
US economic policies have purposely created the so-called immigration crisis.

Employers are NOT punished for hiring illegal immigrants- there is next to no money for enforcing the laws.

NAFTA and the anti-labor politicians, Repubs and Dems alike are more responsible for this situation than the people who are seeking work. Check your zenophobia and hypocrisy at the door all you so-called Democrats.
We can’t export millions of skilled jobs and then blame the victims. Most have come here to work, MOST of whom are legal.

We need their labor. Lets bring them in now that they are here so they can share in the benefits and the responsibilities of citizenship. Stratfor.com has written that the US economy will pull ahead of the EU in part because we have the dynamism to adapt and evolve economically.

We need to invest in education and health care for everyone and tax the wealthy at the same rates we are taxed – for starters. There is a class war and blaming the newest darker skin arrivals is the oldest trick in the book.
