“Even Baby Jesus accepted gifts,

and I don’t believe it corrupted him.” — North Carolina State Rep. Drew Saunders (D), arguing that a $200 gift-reporting requirement for legislators from non-family members was too low.

Fine republicans, we admit it… even dems can say assholish things at times.

  2. thinkaboutit says:

I believe Judas also received gifts.

  3. Your new Chinese overlords says:

“Even Baby Jesus accepted gifts, and I don’t believe it corrupted him.”

Well, myrrh isn’t refundable, so what did you expect him to do?

  4. Jay says:

IF that is the case…congress members should only
be allowed to sleep in mangers and accept gold, frankensense and muhr.

  5. Wayne says:

I am to the point that I think we need to vote against most incumbents, whether Dem or Repug. Get a fresh crew in the houses. Voting out all incumbents would still turn over the congress, but may clear the stink of corruption out. And boy does it stink there now!!

But I am not sure I couldever vote Republican again, ever. ( used to try to vote for the person, after researching them )

  6. GG says:

I expect DREW SAUNDERS to sleep in the manger with the other animals for a few nights too if he wants to be a stickler for details.

  7. napu says:

Where do we get these jokers?

  8. GG says:

AHHH Beat me to it JAY!

  9. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Wow. I have heard some idiotic things out of the mouths of some politicians, but this has got to rank among the stupidest and most ignorant, not to mention irrelevant, arguments to support greed that I’ve ever heard. “Baby Jesus” was, I am sure, completely unaware of any “gifts” brought to him, so to say that he “accepted” them is, at best, disingenuous. He actually invoked a holy figure’s name to justify being allowed to accept more valuable gifts because, apparently, serving the people isn’t enough of an honor.

  10. Clif says:

Very simple any congressman or woman that can walk across the Potomac gets to exceed the gift ban…otherwise stick to being mere mortals and the law…

  11. Bluein Texas says:

North Carolina says it all. I don’t understand how one in ‘public service’ could not understand the ethical dimension of accepting gifts. This guy is yet another example of why we need public financing of campaigns.

  12. Seitz says:

Fine. If he’s gonna be such a baby, let’s amend the law so that they don’t have to report gifts of frankincense and myhr.

  13. lib4 says:

At least when the RW blogs expose this they will be forced to address the issue finally…….

Any politician who belives our political system is Quid Pro Quid ..should be voted out of office regardles of party…..

    “Even Baby Jesus accepted gifts”

Oh, that’s good. Compare Congress members to Jesus. Did anyone knock him in the head to bring him back to reality?

  15. Zookeeper says:

    He’s comparing…he thinks…wait…um…nevermind.

  16. Jack says:

I hope religious leaders, of good character, are listening.

Wow! These guys will bastardize Christianity in anyway that suits their selfish purpose.

    Is Hell exothermic or endothermic?

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

    a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

    b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

    e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

    i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

  17. unbelievable says:

So Saunders admits that he acts like an infant?

    Nothing new there.

  18. Badmoodman says:

Oh, Moses smell the roses! And he’s a DEMOCRAT? Is he a Zell Miller Democrat??

  19. Will OBGYN for Food says:

    Don’t forget:

The Democrats are 1/2 of the powerbase ruining our country and systematically destroying our beautiful country.

  20. SemanticAntics says:

I’m pretty sure douche bags accept gifts too.

And I bet Jesus’s friends got the gifts wholesale!

  21. Jane E. Schneider says:

Yeah, and Baby Jesus’s Father used to accept animal sacrifices, does that mean congressmen will want them, too?

  22. Jules says:

Well – if GWB thinks he is God then can’t Saunders think he is baby Jesus?

  23. Wayne says:

  24. Dan says:

What was the value of those gifts Dumbass?
I have recently seen an objective research that tried to answer it and I recall the value in todays dollars was $34.

Was this turdblossom comparing himself to JC or was he just pandering to the Christian Taliban to “give freely?”

  25. Dan says:

Here is his contact information page.

Feel free to send him an e-mail with suggestions as to how to remove ones head from their ass

At the same time you can request recipes for foot in mouth soufflé and arrogance stew.

  26. kindness says:

Oh my God! So WHAT if Jesus accepted “gifts” from Mary Magdelin. Now just because the DaVinci Code says those gifts were transgressions, don’t go dragging poor baby jesus through the mud…..

    Some people….

  27. Hamster Brain says:

Jesus wouldn’t have taken money from the Devil.

Also Jesus was poor, How poor is Mr Saunders?
Do you not take money for your job from the Taxpayers Mr Saunders?
So you do not need $200 lunches, If Jesus was given a 200$ lunch he would probably give it to those who needed it.

AND WHY THE HECK ARE THESE GUYS, AS GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES, ALLOWED ANY “Free Lunches” AT ALL?

Because they are self serving Pigs.
No More Satanic Pigs in Congress!!
AND YOU ARE NOT JESUS OR YOU WOULDN”T BE WORKING IN SUCH A CORRUPT DAMN PLACE!

  28. Dan says:

I sent him a scathing e-mail (see contact above). I have to confess it was quite cathartic. Every once in a while you just have to send out a cyber bitch slap to these fools who are asking for it.

  29. Stupid Republicans says:

Doesn’t matter what party he’s in. He’s from the Bible belt.

    Enough said.

  30. Marie says:

Stupidity knows no bounds. Although he is from a Bible belt state, under great influence by the Robertsons, etc.

  31. Dan says:

    READ YOUR BIBLE AMERICA

“Ye though I say unto you, they shall raise up the least among them to the highest post and he shall appear as a monkee. The sheep shall follow and the lies shall flow like water from the sea. They shall believe his deceptions and follow him unto war with the wrong nation. And Cheney will shoot a guy in the face too.”

    Lobotomy 9:11

  32. LC Liberal says:

That’s about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. OK, maybe notm but still.Just goes to show you that a lot of Dems, most of them really, are jsut as bad as GOPers.

    #32 Dan, LMAO too!

  35. turtle says:

While the baby jesus may have accepted gifts from the wise men but I don’t think the wise men were greasing his palms to get a lucrative non-bid contract from the DOD now did they?

  36. Wayne says:

16 and 31— both very funny posts Jack and Dan

  37. EconAtheist says:

Just wait until the libertarians hear about this… and.. and… take over!

    /laughing
//get rid of political parties, folks

  38. Kurt M. says:

    Thank you, Turtle!

I was waiting for someone to point out that the three wisemen weren’t gifting baby Jesus in order to line their purses. (Win a contact.) What kind of congressional moron uses this metaphore and can’t see the illogic? If he’s that dumb, just how dumb are the people who put him in office?

  39. jurassicpork says:

Then again, Baby Jebus was shitting green slime into hay so what did he know from corruption?

Anyway, I’d like to ask other bloggers if they’ve received offers to review books from Simon and Schuster or their imprints. I’ve been asked twice in about four days to review new books by Helen Thomas (Watchdogs of Democracy?) and Eric Boehlert (Lapdogs: How the Press Rolled Over for Bush).

I’d like to know if other bloggers have been contacted by Simon and Schuster and/or other publishers recently (I’d also received an offer to review Glenn Greenwald’s book but I turned them down) and why and how I’ve suddenly gotten their attention. I’d especially like to hear from the major progressive bloggers, even though they completely blow me off as if I have nothing worthwhile to say (witness the utter lack of blogrolls).

Simon and Schuster, on the other hand, thinks that I do. What I’d like to know is, Why do they want me to provide them with a blurb?

  40. maotig says:

Well as soon as we find a congressperson with out sin, and that can walk on water, we should probably sick to the limit. My preference would be a limit of none.

  41. SiriusA says:

“Even Baby Jesus accepted gifts, and I don’t believe it corrupted him.”

    I have two responses:

    1) perhaps it did. perhaps if those gifts and that praise had not been laid at his feet he might have grown up to be just another common bastard.

    2) if our senators are willing to accept similar gifts perhaps they’d be willing to stand in line to make similar sacrafices.

  42. Zookeeper says:

    #32 – That’s fantastic!

  43. Jeffrey Stewart says:

I am probably missing something in that statement because it doesn’t make sense. As far as I know the baby Jesus wasn’t a member of the U.S. Congress.

  46. Briseadh na Faire says:

Yes, Baby Jesus did receive gifts, and look what the establishment did to him! Is Rep. Saunders willing to likewise be cruxified?

By the way, kudos to ThinkProgress for posting when a Democrat says something incredibly stupid. Glad to see someone keeping an eye on both sides of the aisle!

  47. Dave M. says:

The best part is that this guy probably thought his comment was sooooooooooooo clever.

  48. Leoger says:

YES AND WISED UP ,CHASED THE MONEY CHANGER REPUBS OUT OF THE TEMPLE .

    Excellent!!

  51. Solitaire says:

#43, similar sacrifices~ HA! I’m still laughing at that one.

  52. Cyra Brown says:

Just goes to show you that using the “Jesus Justification” is not always the way to go. Copying standard Republican procedures, hoping that it will work for you, is stupid. This guy deserves a huge ration of sh*t over this one.

Don’t forget that baby elephant he killed the other day. I don’t think I’ve seen any mention of that on TP.

#16 Jack, sounds like “What Jesus Meant” ? My husband bought the book, but I haven’t read it yet, just heard some excerpts.

  56. huxley says:

I knew Baby Jesus, Rep. Saunders. The Baby Jesus was a friend of mine. You, sir, are no Baby Jesus.

  57. Bluestocking says:

The key word there is “Baby”, Saunders — they’re too young to know any better, but YOU are not. Jesus was also a highly ethical person, but YOU…your objection to this ruling makes it clear what you are.

  58. DWG says:

Will someone tell this worthless idiot pretending to be a public servant and a member of the Democratic party that when he is baby Jesus, he can accept gifts? Until then, serve the people and shut the @#$$% up.

  59. Drew Mackenzie says:

Being a member of Congress is a little different than being born the King of Israel.

  60. Jay Randal says:

Congressmen are not the baby Jesus or kings, so accepting expensive gifts is bribary!

  61. Jay Randal says:

I bet Rep. Nancy Pelosi says nothing about this Dem Rep. being a sick creepo, but she thinks Rep. Cynthia McKinney should be punished severely for slapping a DC cop who grabbed her man > lol.

  62. Jay Randal says:

Correction > grabbed her ARM, but hey grabbing her man is funnier > lol.

  63. cousin benny says:

God also said that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of god.

I guess that means bush and cheney aren’t going to heaven. (oh and being responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocents pretty much disqualifies you as well)

  64. Zimzone says:

    Jesus turned water into wine.
This asshole is turning ‘bread’ into whine.

    No Incumbents in ‘06!

  65. Dot Connector says:

Actually, Christ more or less committed suicide, disdaining to work from within to change society. If he was corrupted, it was by his halucinations of angels telling him he was the son of god and he had to die.

  66. Jan says:

Hey! Leave NC out of it! Every state has a village idiot. Saunders just happens to be the idiot of the day ~ Livin’ in NC and lovin it!

  67. IraqVet says:

If he believes that then it’s time to vote his azz out of office. We need honesty, and regardless of the party, if that is his belief then he is good to no one!

  68. Grand Moff Texan says:

    Comparing himself to Jesus?

OK. Does that mean we can nail this cracker to a tree, now?

    Good.
    .

  69. Paul In SF says:

Tell you what, Rep. Saunders. You can keep whatever gifts you want. Right after you change some water to wine. Too tough? OK, I’ll settle for the loaves and fishes trick then.

  70. Nancy L. says:

What he also forgot, was that Jesus gave up all his earthly possessions and spent his life wandering, with his disciples, to spread the gospel of love and charity. They slept out in the open, and Jesus had to depend on the charity of others, because he and the disciple didn’t possess money. So, is this guy going to give up his earthly possessions? Yeh, when Hell freezes over. What a cry baby.
When I worked for a nonprofit, we were not allowed to accept any gifts regardless of value, it had to be turned over to the agency I worked for, because the idea was we were already paid for the work we were doing, and we were not suppose to accept gifts for doing our job. Now I think that is a great way to cure Congress, make them turn over every gift they get, because we already pay for them to do a job, so they shouldn’t be getting gifts for just doing their job.

  71. G.W.SuperChrist says:

  72. Scott says:

Ben Franklin observed that if people were angels (or Jesus I suppose he would add) we wouldn’t need government. If we didn’t need government North Carolina State Rep. Drew Saunders would be on welfare because he is clearly too stupid and arrogrant to work in the real world.
