New Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi acknowledged the true impact of the Iraq war: “We consider the war and occupation in Iraq a grave error that hasn’t solved - but has complicated - the problem of security. … Terrorism has found a new base and new excuses for internal and external terrorist action.”

James Tobin, a senior official in President Bush’s re-election campaign, was sentenced to 10 months in prison yesterday for his role in suppressing votes in a key U.S. Senate race. The scandal may involve the White House. U.S. District Judge Steven McAuliffe said, “It was a direct assault on a free and fair electoral system. We’ll never know if the wrong people are sitting in government because of this effort.”

Fighting intensifies in Afghanistan: “Heavy fighting involving several hundred Taliban fighters and Afghan and coalition forces in southern Afghanistan killed about a dozen police, a Canadian soldier and more than 30 militants.”

After 16 months of inaction, the House ethics committee will begin bribery investigations into Reps. Bob Ney (R-OH) and William Jefferson (D-LA). Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX) will escape scrutiny from the committee because he will be leaving Congress next month, breaking Chairman Doc Hasting’s (R-WA) Apr. 2005 pledge to investigate the former House Majority Leader.

The Senate yesterday passed immigration amendments that would “build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border” and would require all native-born and immigrants workers to “submit their names to two huge federal databases to verify their legal status before taking any new job.”

President Bush is preparing to “turn to a familiar administration partner” to help secure the U.S. border with Mexico — giant military contractors. The winning contractor will secure an estimated $2 billion over the next three to six years to build a “virtual fence.”

Fed Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has said, “[T]he risks to inflation are perhaps the most significant at the moment.” Consumer prices rose by 0.6 percent in April, fueling concerns the Fed might keep pushing interest rates up to fend off inflation. Higher prices are cutting into consumers’ purchasing power and dampening the outlook for economic growth.

Americans digging out from under more debt: “Soaring housing prices and aggressive mortgage lending have saddled home buyers with ever greater levels of debt, and early signs are now emerging that more people are unable to keep up with their monthly mortgage payments.”

The talk of a 30,000 troop drawdown really was a headfake. Yesterday, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld “said he cannot guarantee that there will be substantial withdrawals of U.S. troops from Iraq this year.” While Rumsfeld hopes for a drawdown, he “can’t promise it.”

And finally: in Pennsylvania, the “nifty write-in feature on the new electronic voting machines attracted something different in Tuesday’s election: profanity.” Luzerne County Election Bureau Director Leonard Piazza was offended most by “a pair of ‘c’ words which appeared several times.” The Wilkes-Barre Times Leader reports that such profanity was “rare on the lever machines. Voters who wanted to be naughty generally stuck to storybook and cartoon characters.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Oh, we already DO know that the wrong people are sitting in government becuase of this (and other efforts). The Florida recount has already proven this behavior has occured.

The MinuteMen already found local contractors to do the work for the sections they want to build, maybe they can underbid Haliburton on this.

And Come on TP, how about a link to the update in the Hoffa Case
"FBI agents are searching a farm near the city of Detroit after a lead on the disappearance of union boss Jimmy Hoffa in 1975, reports say."

Heh-heh. You KNOW the electorate is pissed when they start choosing profanity as their write-in vote. They know it'll be seen, and must be counted. I like this form of protest; a few votes wasted, but a message sent nonetheless...

Anyone catch The Daily Show last night when Jon Stewart interviewed the author of a book called "The Party of Death?"

Wow. He nailed the guy to to wall. The guy said that the hateful rhetoric ratcheted up by the Democrats on the issue of abortion doesn't allow for a open and honest debate. Stewart said simply, "YOU named your book 'The Party of Death.' How does that help open and honest debate without the hateful rhetoric?"

He then discussed how the Republicans use the justification of 'not killing innocent lives to possibly save other's lives' when discussing the issue of opposing stem cell research. He got the guy to agree that the GOP argument is a valid one. Stewart then asked a very good question: "Isn't that the justification the Bush administration is using for the war in Iraq?"

Ouch. There was quite a bit of nervous water sipping from the author throughout the interview.

    POOF!

There's the 'virtual' fence. What's that? You can't see it. Trust me, it's there.... well, it's virtually there.

    You owe me $2,000,000,000.

What offends me about this and the president's speech Monday night was that not one word was said about trying to secure our border with Canada, our neighbor to the north. Every single argument put forth by the president for sending troops to the southern border could apply equally well to the northern border. I don't care what anybody who supports this idea says. If you don't support doing the same thing to the northern border that you want done to the southern border, then you're being racist. Because skin color is the only thing that distinguishes illegals crossing each border. That's how I feel. It's a free country, so feel free to disagree.

Americans digging out from under more debt: “Soaring housing prices and aggressive mortgage lending have saddled home buyers with ever greater levels of debt, and early signs are now emerging that more people are unable to keep up with their monthly mortgage payments.”

Well, most Americans have no one to blame but themselves for this one. Granted, mortgage companies don't get a free pass from me for their predatory lending practices, but in the end, it comes down to the individual who enters into the mortgage.

Taking out a mortgage is one of the most important life choices you'll ever make. Take the time and do the research. Investigate property taxes. Look at the housing market in your area. Don't take a mortgage that you can't afford if your income were to go down some.

Just because you 'qualify' for a home doesn't mean you should buy it. Hell, my wife and I bought our second home last year and we were told by our lender that we 'qualified' for a $550,000 home. Well, my wife got all glassy eyed thinking about living the high life. I asked her if she liked ketchup and rice; cause if we broke the bank for that house, that's what we'd be eating every day for the rest of our lives.

She came to her senses after that.

The northern border dosn't have 500,000 or more people crossing it illegally each year to move to the US.

Every single argument put forth by the president for sending troops to the southern border could apply equally well to the northern border.

    Well, it's simple, Wayne.

There are more brown people in Mexico than in Canada. And we all know that brown people are more of a threat than Canadians. I'm not sure why that's the case, it's just what I've been programmed to think by conservatives.

    POP.

Now that I've removed my tongue from my cheek, I think the real answer is more simple than that. Canada's economy is getting stronger. Their dollar is strengthening against the US dollar for the first time in years. It hit .90 Canadian just a week or so ago. Things are going pretty well up there.

Now, Mexico.... that's another story. Take away tourism and the economy is... ummm... hmmm... That's why so many Mexican citizens want to get into America. Their quality of life can be higher here than it is there.

Now, about the only reason I can think of for supporting strengthening the border to the north is to address the illegal immigrants that are coming to us via Canada. It's estimated that only 20-25% of illegal immigrants are Mexican nationals and the rest are Indian, African, Asian, Eastern European, and Russian. They can get into the US just as easily from Canada as they can from Mexico.

To me, the whole idea of a fence is stupid. It's closing the barn door after the horses have already got out. Let's take the billions we're going to blow trying to do border security and start cracking down on the business that employ illegal immigrants. Two things will happen then:

    1) Prices of a lot of consumables will go up as well as construction costs
    2) Jobs for illegal immigrants will dry up and they'll stop trying to come to the US anyway

  18. Marie Says:

Roberts says the whistleblowers comprimised security -- how stupid does he think anay terrorist is? That no one ever thought they might be eavesdropped upon? It's the domestic spying we are concerned about -- Roberts is hostile to everyone who is not in lockstep. He continues.

  26. Sharon Cox Says:

I agree with you Wayne #13. You are right on, on this one. It only takes one illegal from either border to creat mass devastation. We caught one in Washington a couple of years ago that had snuck down from Canada and was on a Ferry to Seattle with a trunk load of explosives in his car. He was not a Canadian ......All our borders need to be secure, period. All people hideing here with expired visas or no visas need to be sent back to their country. We also need to cut back on the number of visas we hand out. Did you know there were more than 25 thousand visas given out the month after 9/11. Given the track record of our entire administration it is a given that many (bad guys and gals) were allowed in and are still here. A police state is not a good thing on the one hand but total unaccountability and lack of servalance of any kind has gotten us into the mess we are in now....Many states are suffering from the increase of crime and drug trafficing because of our " war on drugs" not being done. Just like the war on "terror". Pass the bill, cut the funds............More madness..........Blessings

There are plenty of mosques in Winnipeg, Manitoba. There are signs posted along the city streets to aid the driver to the whereabouts of their locations.

Two men of Arab origin were found in a church in northern Minnesota about three years ago. They were freezing to death and hungry. They were lucky someone found them and came to their aid.

The Canadian/US border is a sieve.

People from South America travel to Mexico and then make it into the US. I worked with an immigrant worker from Mexico City a couple of years ago; he informed me of what was really happening. Mexicans work the tomato fields in Ontario. Mexicans work in the oil fields in the US.

However, a fence on the US/Mexico border is dumb. I suppose illegal immigrants could build it though. I don't know who else would be willing to do it.

Open borders would work better. A vastly improved Mexican economy would solve some problems too.

    Without papers = WOP.

Right you are (though granted, the actual number must be an estimate). Let it be known that the southern border will henceforward be closed to the economic migration of foreign nationals, whilst the Northern border will remain unguarded, allowing potential terrorists easy access to the heartland of the United States.

There. That makes everything all right. We're safe now. Secure in the knowledge that the only new migrant laborers picking our crops will be Canadian.

One issue at a time, first we deal with the bigger border issue, the Southern Border, then, once thats doing better, we can start focusing on the Northern Border.

  33. kindness Says:

re: the border fence. Philisophically, if you support fencing the southern border, you HAVE TO support fencing the northern border. You can say the northern border doesn't pose a threat, but you'd be lying to yourself and us (and it's lying to yourself that makes you look really, really bad). 2 reasons:

    1) the northern border is much longer & more developed. more roads going through & right by.

    2) the only case of Osama's crony's being caught trying to cross a border with explosives and the intent to blow something up in the US was in Washington State back in 1999/2000.

You who are lying to yourself will justify your beliefs with bullshit. We just agree your a closet racist.

Supposidly it could cause global cooling due to stuff it kicks up into the atmosphere, so maybe we just need to start above ground nuke testing again, combat global warming. It's a win win, hippies get to combat global warming, the military gets to test new toys.

"I’m not sure why that’s the case, it’s just what I’ve been programmed to think by conservatives."

That is what you have programmed yourself to think or was that really a joke?

    "Canada’s economy is getting stronger."

Thank in part to conservatives that are in control of the Canadian government.

"Let’s take the billions we’re going to blow trying to do border security and start cracking down on the business that employ illegal immigrants."

You must FIRST secure the border in order to prevent the people from comming in. Plain and simple. You don't need "billions" to crack down on businesses that hire illegals. That should be standard protocol which just isn't inforced as it should be. Maybe when they see that fence going up, the corrupt Mexican govenrment will finally get the hint that the gravy train isn't going to flow anymore to their economy and they will actually get their oil rich country out of the gutter economically which is presently controlled by drug lords. We should be using part of that money to put pressure on Mexico to improve their economy.

    1) Prices of a lot of consumables will go up as well as construction costs

    Very true.

    2) Jobs for illegal immigrants will dry up and they’ll stop trying to come to the US anyway.

Are you kidding? Considering that there aren't any jobs to speak of in Mexico and their social services stink, you actually think that they will stop crossing the border? A chance for a better life is better than no chance at all. BTW I agree in fining the businesses the hire illegal aliens

Half of my state border Canada.(Maine) We have very little problems with Canadians crossing illegally(not to say it doesn't happen occassionally) but we have a lot of hispanic migrants, here for the egg industry. Yeh, they keep them behind fences on the property and officials, social workers, have had trouble getting in. This company is known for hiring cheap labor. Border patrols are here regularly. We get many migrant Canadians during apple and potato seasons, but most go home after the season. Generations come and go during the seasons, then return home. Many have done this for years.
Hell, our seniors go to Canada for much of their precription medications, because Canada controls their prescription drug industry, not the pharmacuetical companies, therefore the meds are cheaper than here. Note: we are the only industrial country in the world who does not have government control over the prescription drug industry)
Back to the subject, our notheren borders are easier to cross, due to less border incidents, that is until 9/11, then it did show a serious problem, which needs to be addressed. Not that we have alot of Canadians hammering to come across, but the fact, others who want to do harm, can get in by that route.
PS. Canadians are not demanding citizenship or amnesty here in the US.

  75. Jack Says:

We’ll never know if the wrong people are sitting in government because of this effort.”

I think the way we hold elections and vote in the year 2006 is a little embarrassing - very frail, easily manipulated, antiquated machines or new machines that are bugging. The 2000 election was the pinnacle of voting disasters and extremely demoralizing that our great country could fumble so badly. Can the world respect us if we can't even get the process correct to get our leader right? It is sort of ironic when Bush talks about Iraq voting and the purple finger, that Iraq may be doiing a better job then us. What is worse, 6 years later little has changed for the better.

Soaring housing prices and aggressive mortgage lending have saddled home buyers with ever greater levels of debt,

Of course this is a role of government to create the laws and rules to make our markets work honestly. If the law is broken, the appropriate action should be taken. Unfortunately corporations have huge influences. Without knowing anything specific about these particular people, one might assume if they aren't victims of a crime, they were simply irresponsible. Watch Oprah and you'll see people addicted to shopping and spend way beyond their means. No one forced people to buy these homes with these products... It is the same thing with the stock market, no one forced people to buy stocks at high prices. And often when you tell them not, they arent' so nice. Having said that, this is the ugly side of our current version of capitalism : the deception, aggressive sales, no consideration for the impact on society and peoples lives, the relentless bombardment by those that profit with garbage info, exaggerated claims, short-term thinking, and few if any common sense rational voices to balance the other voices. I think one day we will look back at these McMansions, and wonder what the heck were we thinking from an environmental, social, architectural, and financial perspective. On the one hand, the property taxes from these homes goes to the local government (bigger home means more taxes from you to them --- they are very happy), but on the other hand the owners can deduct local property taxes and the mortgage interest on the Schedule A tax form. So are we subsidizing someone's living choice? A home fine, a McMansion, hhhmmm?

    Consumer prices

Can we believe the numbers? The way the CPI is calculated seems like one big magic show. The basket of goods they use and manipulate. I wonder when they measure the price of bread do they substitute Wonder Bread for Natural Oven bread. Do they replace natural food with chemically processed cancer causing hardening of the arteries food products? And when they look at technology, not all improvements are beneficial, they are more cosmetic, so I wouldn't want to buy it in the first place but they have the discretion of saying you are getting more for your money. HHHmmm....

    House ethics committee

I watched Gingrich a little on Sunday. He is a very good speaker. I'm not quite sure about his own ethics, but when asked about ethics and corruption in politics he said it is on both sides and then proceeded to name a couple Democrats specifically, but he didn't name one Republican. And if you look at the news these days, who is going to prison, it is Republicans. It felt like a political deflection tactic. Although Jay Leno is having a nightly gag regarding Patrick Kennedy. Ho hum :-(

  76. squegeeboo Says:

    kindess,

Generally I agree with you, but for people like this I just don't even want to have to bother with scrolling past, Better to just see the number with "Comment Deleted: Name" if it's interesting enough to rubberneck on, someone else comments on it, and then I can turn themback on.

  78. Zookeeper Says:

This story is over at DKos:

Feingold, Specter clash over gay marriage
WASHINGTON --A Senate committee approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage Thursday, after a shouting match that ended when one Democrat strode out and the Republican chairman bid him "good riddance."

"I don't need to be lectured by you. You are no more a protector of the Constitution than am I," Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., shouted after Sen. Russ Feingold declared his opposition to the amendment, his affinity for the Constitution and his intention to leave the meeting.

"If you want to leave, good riddance," Specter finished.

"I've enjoyed your lecture, too, Mr. Chairman," replied Feingold, D-Wis., who is considering a run for president in 2008. "See ya."

Maybe TP will do a thread?

  79. Jules Says:

I cannot stand Spector. He holds himself out to be a centrist, but he is just as conservative as Bush. I dislike him even more than Bush, if that is at all possible, because he pretends to want to uphold the constitution, then he does nothing about the violations that are occurring.

    queasybooger and T'rashy,

    Get over it...

    ...you won, remember?

America's economic woes are all a Bushite creation...

The criminal Bushiva (your god) came into the 2000 election talking down (the prosperous) Clinton economy...

...saying how inflationary pressures from an overheated stock market needed to be curtailed...

...and the corporate owned Bushite media (CNBC- and the stock analysts) were ALL parroting Bushiva's lies...

...Alan Greenspun- Bushiva's lackey at the fed (I know he was there during Clinton, but he's a Bushite republiscum too)- coined the phrase, "irrational exuberance", to also talk down the economy and instituted somewhere around twelve to fifteen interest rate hikes to "brake" down the RED hot economy...

    REASON WHY?:

(old fart- good old boy conservative- stalwart) Oil and gas stocks were in the sh*tter...

...(progressive-thinking- innovative- new day American) tech stocks were on a roll...

...that good old boy "Oracle of Omaha" (and Berkshire Hathaway) weren't positioned in (and were in fact critical of the tech sector)...

...the criminal Bushites and their big Oil/Pharma/Insurance/Robber baron constituents had to make those good old boy stocks rebound by tearing down the "NEW" (Clinton-era) tech stock driven market...

...so queasy and T'rashy your revisionist lies won't wash...

...Bushiva talked us into an artificial "recession"...

    ...learn your history bi*ches...

Bush Is Now a Lame Duck
    By Dick Meyer
    CBS News
    Wednesday 17 May 2006

Forget November, forget '08; president is done.
Washington - The great impulse of the punditocracy right now is to look at President Bush's swelling problems with the public and his party in the context of the elections coming up in November and then in 2008. Big mistake.

Short of another disaster on the scale of 9/11, George Bush no longer has the power, credibility or ability to effectively govern for the rest of his term in office. Contrary to what you hear on television, governing remains more important than campaigning. Government is more important than elections - to the extent the two can be differentiated anymore.

Bush's realm of efficacy will be limited to areas where he can make unilateral decisions, mostly in war and foreign policy. The tax cuts that oozed through Congress last week may well be his last "significant" piece of domestic legislation; I put quotations around significant because they are, in fact temporary. The entire menu of Bush tax tinkering is set to expire in 2010 on someone else's watch, an apt metaphor for this administration.

The Bush administration is now locked in a triple-hammer hold that would defeat Houdini.

Public support for this president has evaporated to historic lows. Last week's CBS News/New York Times poll put Bush's approval rating at an embarrassing 31 percent. In this week's ABC News/Washington Post poll, voters trusted Democrats over Republicans to handle all 10 of the major issues the pollsters asked about. That's a new one. The new polling is consistent with a long, relentless erosion of public support.

Faced with his unpopularity, the Republican Party, quite naturally, is fighting. Senate and House Republicans are in almost open warfare. The House is hawkish and loud on immigration policy, the Senate dovish and conciliatory. House Leader John Boehner called Leader Frist's call for a $100 gas rebate "insulting," a week after Speaker Hastert dissed General Hayden, the president's choice for the CIA. In February, the House shafted both the Senate and the House by killing the Dubai ports deal.

On the more distant right flank, the party's Christian soldiers have stopped being such good soldiers. They are furious that Bush and the Republican Congress have delivered lip service but no action on issues like gay marriage, immigration, prayer in school, obscenity standards and abortion.

"I can't tell you how much anger there is at the Republican leadership," Richard Viguerie, a veteran conservative consultant and activist told The New York Times. "I have never seen anything like it."

An influential pocket of conservatives that doesn't have social issues at the front of its agenda is equally irritated and equally vocal. A fine example is Bruce Bartlett, a conservative economist long influential in the party, who has just written a book called "Impostor" that skewers this administration for its deficits and unwillingness to deal with the great looming crises in entitlement programs.

The vaunted brilliance and corporate organization of Rove/Bush Inc. has been pretty much blown away in the second term. Rove is fighting off an indictment. From the Dubai deal to the Harriet Miers death march, the White House's political ear seems to be getting tinnier. Porter Goss' appointment to the CIA was a disaster not just politically but substantively. In his second term, the president has never reached outside his core circle for advisers, staff or ideas.

Will all this lead to a Democratic field day in November? Who knows; and not to be flip, but who cares? Polls show Congress is held in low esteem similar to the president's. Democratic gains would simply lead to continued do-nothingism. And the ramifications for 2008, I believe, are nil. 2008 will be about two people, not the performance of congressional Democrats in 2007 and 2008.

But what is apparent, is that George Bush has at his disposal none - none - of the tools presidents have used to turn bad situations around: public support, party support or skilled statecraft. He's a lame duck less than two years in to his second term. You are not being governed.

The IRS is reporting that there are at least 4 million W-2 forms that cant be matched up, wrong SS numbers. There are 243 people using the same womans social security number. This is identity theft and is a FELONY.

Bush wants all forgiven, including the felons. In fact, he wants the Mexican felons sitting in amurkan prisons to be elgible for citizenship also. This amendment was voted down today, but 13 senators voted for it. I would like to know who they were. Go to loudobbs.com to find out.

Now comes the kicker. The 4 million plus who are paying taxes using phony SS numbers, and stolen identify numbers, over the years have paid into SS some 50 billion, yes, billion with a b. That money just sits in the SS Administration, but wait, Bush has plans for it. He will transfer it into the general fund before he leaves office to offset some of the deficit. Cute eh what?

During the Clinton years, the DJIA grew from 3000 to 10500 (350% in 8 years). During the Bush years, it has been stagnent (10% in 6 years). Scarcely a statement of success. When Clinton left office, the dollar was worth 1.12 Euros, now its worth .81.

  139. Clif Says:

Walt please do not confuse the bloviaters of spin here with facts that we know have such a liberal bent....

Walt....I understand on another blog we have a troll daily that touts the good stock market almost at the high it achieved 6 years ago..and when we ask in the terms of inflation what would be the stock market high that would be necessary to actually break the record...nothing just hate speech about liberals don't know jack and what losers we are....

Ok, I'll admit it was quite fascinating, but I wouldn't want to do it again - ever.

  145. WaltTheMan Says:

    Clif,
Do as I have - I moved my 401K funds into the Euro market. It grows at 11-14% per year. I screwed up with the Yuan - could have reaped big money with an investment a few days ago. Missed that one by a mile. Did not believe that the Chinese rulers would let the currency float by 8-12%. The shrinking dollar is an opportunity for Americans to invest overseas. Up until W came onto the stage, investment flowed in the opposite direction.

  147. Cyra Brown Says:

So now that they have a Democrat to investigate, not just Republicans, the House Ethics Committee is finally ready to do their job. And I am sure the Democrat is first on the list. And once they are finished with him, it will be a case of "something suddenly came up" and no investigation of the Republican will be forthcoming. But they will say that they were on it, getting it done, exposing Democratic corruption. I can see it all now. Sheesh.

  148. WaltTheMan Says:

    Clif,
I figuratively weep for your plight and can only pray that (y)our government steps up to the task of resolving your situation.

  149. Lora Says:

The current economic growth that the U.S. is in the mist(SIC) of however, is partly because of the Bush tax cuts, as a matter of fact.

What an interesting--perhaps Freudian--misspelling or typo. The mist (or perhaps fog) of current economic growth under Bush!

  150. Tracy Says:

midst...a misspelling...definitely not unclear economic growth. Of course it would be mist for those who are clueless about today's U.S. business and/or economics.

What exactly did Clinton do to propel the DOW from 3000 to over 10,500?

  152. Nancy L. Says:

Walt & Clif. Six years ago, I lost $3,000 over a 3 month period on my 403(B) for non-profits, then less than 6 months after, I lost my job of 12 yrs to budget cuts. Within a year, I had to cash in my annunity and use the money to save my home. Since then it's been all downhill. Then I listen to all the bribes, kickbacks and whinning because there's a limit on a $50 lunch. Jeez, give me a break. I considered myself one of the lucky ones, I have a roof over my head, and food on the table, course now I have to cross heat off my list since I live in a winter state and may not be able to afford oil this coming winter. But if the economy is booming, please tell me where, cause it ain't here!

  153. Nancy L. Says:

Sorry about getting off the subject, just felt the need to let off some steam.

  154. Lora Says:

Of course it would be mist for those who are clueless about today’s U.S. business and/or economics.

    Comment by Tracy —

And one of these days the neo-cons will have their heads cleared of the mist surrounding the record and still-growing deficit created by Bush and the GOP--particularly when some of our creditor countries start asking the US to repay its debts. (And please don't bother me with arguments; I already know "it's all Clinton's fault")

  155. Tracy Says:

    #156

Progress during the 1990s was set by the previous decade, i.e. the 1980s. Deficits whinning have been the mantra for liberals for years. It old and irrelevant especially when those countries know that virtual guaranteed return on their investment. History is hard to argue with.
