The House yesterday voted to repeal $7 billion in subsidies for oil companies drilling in publicly owned waters. The vote was “approved 252 to 165 over the objections of many Republican leaders,” and now goes to the Senate. “In a separate defeat for energy companies, the House voted 279 to 141 to reject a provision that would lift a 25-year ban on oil drilling in coastal areas outside the western Gulf of Mexico.”
“In the latest indication of the crushing hardships weighing on the lives of Iraqis, increasing portions of the middle class seem to be doing everything they can to leave the country. In a 63-to-34 vote, the Senate yesterday designated English as America’s national language. The Senate also approved a measure by Sen. This whole “English is America’s language” bit is incredibly dumb. It reeks of a redneck mentality. Reminds me eerily of “freedom fries”.

No spongebob, we need to wean ourselves off of oil period. We need alternate sources of energy and we need to expand and improve our commuter system.
May 19th, 2006 at 9:36 am#3 How about some alternative energy sources? Have you ever seen a beach that has a oil rig off its shore? Seal Beach CA is a perfect example. You can now go swimming there and get black crap all over you.
May 19th, 2006 at 9:36 amHow about if we declare Hillbilly our National language?
May 19th, 2006 at 9:37 amOr Texan?
Up North here we have a saying that describes this useless dialogue…
Uff Dah!
Is that English?
Yes, we need alternative energy sources developed, but we also need to increase drilling in America so we have it during the transistion to whatever combination of replacements we end up using.
May 19th, 2006 at 9:38 amExcuse me, but what vital problem is America facing that can be fixed by having an “official language?” Does it feed the hungry or cure the sick? Does it make sure coastal communities are adequately protected against a natural disaster? Does it protect our ports and chemical facilitiies from a hostile attack? No. Does it pander to a particular group of voters that Republicans think they need to win the mid-term elections? Golly, I’m glad we’re paying them so much to govern this country. Sheeesh…
May 19th, 2006 at 9:39 amSquegeeboo,
Assuming we open up every coastline, and the Alaskan preserve to drilling by Oil Companies, do you really think the additional supply going into the bottle-neck of refinery capacity (which is allegedly at its maximum) will appreciably lower the price of gasoline? I doubt it.
We don’t need to wean ourselves off foreign oil, we need to wean ourselves off oil and onto renewable energy sources.
May 19th, 2006 at 9:40 am#10 the US doesn’t comsumer the oil it drills we sell it to Japan and other countries so drill more won’t help us.

Comment by squegeeboo — May 19, 2006 @ 9:25 am
The problem, squegeeboo, is that our nation’s energy policy has been to depend on foreign oil. If the Congress would just admit that their constituents are supposed to be the people in their home districts and states, and not Corporate America, then maybe we wouldn’t be in this mess more than thirty years after gas lines of the 70’s. President Carter put solar panels on the roof of the White House. President Reagan (hero to milions of stupid people everywhere) ordered them taken down almost immediately after entering office. Ever since, our elected officials have done virtually nothing to help reduce our dependence of foreign oil and, in fact, have set our policy so that we are more dependent on it. We could have improved our alternative non-nuclear energy technology during that time, but the government took away any incentive to do so. They even gave the oil companies money to drill for more oil (despite their huge profits). [Nuclear power may or may not be safe, but it's waste never will be. And until we can safely store the radioactive waste, we should not keep building nuclear power plants.]
Sorry, squegeeboo, but the House did the right thing this time. Some of them may not have done it for the right reasons, but they did the right thing.
May 19th, 2006 at 9:49 amAnd in related news, Webster recently announced the first edition of its new Newspeak dictionary. “The best part of this dictionary,” a spokesperson announced, “is the fact that we’ve been able to eliminate all words over three syllables long. This really simplifies the English Language and makes difficult concepts much easier to grasp. For example, “patriotism,” a five-syllable word, has been replaced with BushLove. BushLove is only two syllables long, yet it reflects the essence of the meaning of “patriotism” as our Commander-in-Chief and Big Brother, President Bush understands the term.
The first edition will be distributed to all schools in time for the ensuing school year, and its use will be mandatory under the No Child Left Behind law.

I am trying to buy a Toyota Prius, I have to get on a waiting list. How screwed up is that? Detroit really had a great marketing plan. Just think if American Car companies had increased the gas mileage in their cars it would have saved much more gas than drilling in Alaska.
May 19th, 2006 at 9:51 amAt $70 a barrel there is plenty of profit for the Texas boys to start up drilling. Have they. Not as far as I can learn. Bushco has not told them to open up as of today, and they wont until Bush gives the word.
The Bush and Saudi families own the oil interests of the world.
May 19th, 2006 at 9:53 amRumsfeld pushing to bomb Iran. It’s deja vu all over again
From radio free Europe: Rumsfeld Again Accuses Iran Of Interference
The liar that supported Saddam before he was against him is no pimping for war against Iran. He is a pathetic man that can lie with the best of them in the Bush administration, but probably not as good as Dick Cheney.
The war in the middle east is to establish permanent foothold of a wholly owned group of puppet states so that the US can regulate the distribution of oil and gas resources for the world. Both wars have been based upon lies so far. Only two more to go. Incredibly, the powers behind 911 are our friends. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Pakistan and Egypt have nothing to fear as they are already in line with American demands.
Yet, congress is behind these liars almost 100%. What does that say about our leadership and ourselves. America’s founders were of the complete opposite opinion regarding these issues in order to obtain peace and prosperity within the architecture of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Right now, our representatives are doing everything to destroy these documents and put them on the heap of historically irrelevant documents.
May 19th, 2006 at 9:53 am#15 Let’s not forget Bush cut the alternative energy budget by 30% the minute he was sworn in.
May 19th, 2006 at 9:54 amSqueg – Increasing domestic drilling to help transition away from your addiction to oil is like cooking meth up in your kitchen to help transition away from your addiction to it.

May 19th, 2006 at 9:54 amWith this congress only working 93 or 97 days this year they must be sure to use up their valuable time fighting and voting over a bill to make english the language of USA. The above posters are right. These fools we have in office do have more important things to do but choose not to do what is necessary to fix this mess we are in. I wonder how much they make per hour when they are only working those few days….Perhaps that is the republican plan, make them obsolete and send them all home. Hell, bush is making all the rules and changing the laws any way. Who needs them………..Blessings

“If the Congress would just admit that their constituents are supposed to be the people in their home districts and states, and not Corporate America”
Your views intrigue me, how may I sign up for your news letter?
May 19th, 2006 at 9:57 am#16 Good post, Briseadh.
If the idiots in Congress actually pass a law making English our official language, where will that leave President Bush who has, at best, a passing understanding of the language?
This amendment is nothing more than an appeal to stupid people who are incapable of understanding more than one language. (Stupid people tend to be coinservative, as we have all known for several centuries.) Another reason it’s ridiculous is that there is no longer any such thing as “standard English”. Even “American English” changes all the time to the point where generations within a family can’t understand each other. (You really think Grandma is going to be givning “props” to anyone any time soon? Doubt it.) It would be unenforceable and very probably a violation of the First Amendment protection of free speech. And since it would not override any existing multi-lingual laws, it would have zero effect on anything. So why do it? To appeal to the stupid people.
May 19th, 2006 at 9:59 amRegarding English as the national language…this is on the long list of diversions planned by Congress to try and shore up the base. Look for constitutional amendments banning gay marriage and that old chestnut flag burning on the horizon. Not that any of these things have the slightest chance of making it into law.
In 1986 they passed a law designating the rose as the national flower. I believe the purpose was similar.
Look at the bright side…at least they’re not going to pass an immigration bill. Congressional republicans are unwilling to work with GWB on anything because it will damage them in November. So they’re biding their time between fundraisers and recesses with meaningless bills.
And don’t lump in the Democrats in your derision, just because they take part in the debate. The minority party cannot set or change the agenda.
May 19th, 2006 at 10:00 amCutting the 7 Billion dollar GIFT to oil companies is a good start. I’m still waiting to hear them say they are cutting the additional 8 Billion dollars the fine leaders of the House, Senate & King dumbya gave them in tax breaks this last fall. For a party that believes in supply side economics, they sure don’t follow their own medicine when it comes to Big Oil. Could it be that the leaders (all republican) of the House, Senate & Executive branch (in addition to the RNC) are all on the take? That’s what I think.
Squeege – you’ve got it half right. The combustion engine is 150 years old. Auto’s are over 100 years old. Let’s keep the auto’s but replace the combustion engine. Batteries are the way to go. Don’t be calling us idiots when all you are putting on the table is to continue our use of oil for energy. It isn’t clean, it isn’t wise.

Arn’t most viable battery systems currently a net energy loss?
Dick Cheney and energy policy: he killed alternative fuel initiatives in the Ford administration and killed them for good in the Reagan administration. He is the mind behind DU for bullets and hiring KBR for privatising mercenaries and war support. The US has no rational energy policy. The US had a chance to continue to do great things for our infrastructure (the best in the world), but it has all stalled because of Cheney and people like him. There are many things the US needs to change if it is ever to become independent of foreign oil.
Change the damn building codes to include energy generating renewables. The US is far behind China and Brazil in using technology to reduce dependence on oil. I’ve talked with sales execs from Kyocera and BP and both are stunned at the pure stupidity of the US consumer, government and corporations that don’t include renewables in the creation of new and upgrading of old infrastructure. Ethanol from corn is so energy intensive to make that it doesn’t solve anything but make more jobs (Brazil uses sugar cane).
Waiting for Adam Smith’s invisible hand will be as long a wait as the second coming of Jesus by christian zionists. There is no competition as the SEC made sure of that. Deregulation has created monopolies and oligopolies, precisely the opposite effect of what the SEC was created for. The FCC is another division of our government that hasn’t been worth a tinkers damn.
Technology is available, but even the Apollo Alliance is a dead cow that sucks in cash and has done nothing but generate doctored numbers from the states to meet what is supposed to be energy savings. Today’s technology and energy efficient amplification, low power/high torque motors, wide spread light weight composites and metal alloys…should have cut the cost of the average home appliance and HVAC system by up to 85% from what was available just 10 years ago. I see nothing on the horizon from any major manufacturer at the trade shows that suggest that we can expect the application of new energy saving technologies in the future. Once again, without real competition, the consumer can expect planned obsolescence and technology moving at a snail’s pace for products in the home.
Because of this Cheney and his oil buddies, the Americans persist in thinking that oil is endless and will not buy efficient cars and trucks in quantity. None of the American car makers create diesel or hybrid engines. They have to purchase them from other companies in Japan or Europe. The likelihood of hydrogen fuel cell cars is almost nil as there are no companies that are willing to put money into a distribution system. If it wasn’t for our representative government (when it was a representative government), there would be no internet, world wide web, interstate transportation system, satellite telecommunications system, landline communication system, clean tap water available to all, clean air, safe foods & medications, electricity and safe and equitable distribution, … Corporations have never been able to create and implement anything on the scale of what is necessary to cover the entire country and it would be nuts to think that they could or even should.

What makes Bushco think that the people “living in the shadows” are going to come forward to get an IS card? They will be penalized for doing so, and all are FELONS because of identity theft, using other peoples social security numbers.
Strnghten the border and go after the people who hire illegal aliens and you will solve the problem. It is not solved by requiring English as the national language. It is not solved by offering them citizenship after 10 years. It is not solved by slapping them on the wrist for their illegal activities.

Here’s something interesting. This is what happens when you teach little girls to act like little whores. And you wonder why the deeply religious of the Muslim faith crash airplanes into buildings? They hate some of our exports and are willing to kill to keep their women and children from becoming like the Filthy Left.
Out of control: Girls are more likely than boys to drink, smoke, steal and take drugs
More polls » In a disturbing confirmation of the spread of the ‘ladette’ culture, it found violence, aggression and self-destructive behaviour has spread alarmingly among girls over the past 20 years.
While boys appear less likely to be drawn towards crime or drugs than they were, psychological and social problems are stacking up among teenage girls, who are now expected to compete on equal terms with boys for educational opportunity and jobs.
The study of 14 and 15-year-olds was conducted by questionnaire, in schools under exam conditions, and the results compared with a similar one from 1985.
Professor Colin Pritchard, who led the research, said: ‘Girls now significantly smoke and binge-drink more than boys. They truant, steal and fight at similar rates, and start under-age sex earlier than boys.’
He said binge-drinking, which was admitted by nearly a third of girls in their early teenage years, drove other anti-social behaviour such as stealing, fighting, taking drugs and engaging in risky sex.
‘There is an element of following role models set by the media,’ he said ‘We can look back to the Spice Girls where girls were set an example in which aggressive behaviour was considered praiseworthy.

Do you REALLY think teenage girls now drink & do drugs more than teenage boys? I’d say it’s about even. As far as you studies go – kids don’t answer them honestly because they don’t believe the answers are confidential. So they say what they think their parents would approve of often times or give “sanitized” answers.

Party Affiliation Versus Education Level
Unfortunatily, the Berkley studio it references is now a dead link.
And the Pew Research Center has some decent stuff also, go down to the “Detailed Demo. Tables” and theres a break down by education.
Also, CNN has a 2004 vote break down, and while HS and less then HS are basically statistically equal for the 2004 election, if you look at the change from 2000, you can see their was a small difference in the 2000 elections on how HS and a major difference on how less then HS voted, party wise.

I think it’s pretty disgusting really but it’s a no brainer that society is in decline and where ever it has happened before it’s usually women who lead the way. It wasn’t a coincidence that the devil tempted Eve instead of going right after Adam who was his real target in the first place.
Here’s something else for you brainiacs to mull over. While the Filthy Left (Wayne does this really need to be explained to you?) gush its Bush=Hitler mantra the friendly folks who bring you falling towers and beheadings by the score are now taking a page out of Hitler’s book. Of course that shouldn’t really be a surprise because these folks supported Hitler when he was in power all those many moons ago.
I wonder how long it will be before the Democrats in congress and the liberal media make this an issue. Like the man said, unless there’s a public outcry this yellow star thing for other than Muslims is a done deal. What I expect though is a roundtable discussion that goes on for months about understanding the Iranians and the root causes of their insane hatred.
Iranian expatriates living in Canada yesterday confirmed reports that the Iranian parliament, called the Islamic Majlis, passed a law this week setting a dress code for all Iranians, requiring them to wear almost identical “standard Islamic garments.â€
The law, which must still be approved by Iran’s “Supreme Guide†Ali Khamenehi before being put into effect, also establishes special insignia to be worn by non-Muslims.
Iran’s roughly 25,000 Jews would have to sew a yellow strip of cloth on the front of their clothes, while Christians would wear red badges and Zoroastrians would be forced to wear blue cloth.
“There’s no reason to believe they won’t pass this,†said Rabbi Hier. “It will certainly pass unless there’s some sort of international outcry over this.â€

Wayne is free to make up his own mind (though I agree with his statement), but I will look at those links you provided to make up my own mind. Understand that what I said had nothing to do with education, just intelligence. Most stupid people are conservative, but by no means are all conservatives stupid (inhuman, perhaps, but not stupid.) As we should all know by now, having a degree is not a measure of one’s intelligence. Far too many high school graduates can’t read their own diploma. (Not a majority, but still way too many.) And the president is supposedly an MBA, so how can having a degree equate with being intelligent? But give me a chance to read your links and I’ll make up my own mind about their relevance. Thank you.

Do you have any sources to back up this statement? You have disregarded education as a measure, fair enough. But I would like to know what causes you to say that or what benchmark you are using here. Remarkable how similar his attitude is to the one he linked to in Iran. Perhaps he should start looking for the plank in his own eye. I think he is beyond that though. As Thomas Paine also said: “Reason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it.”

Really IRI? Lets look see…
May 19th, 2006 at 12:24 pmWhen Pope Innocent III was anointed as the Vicar of Christ in 1198, one problem that faced him was heresy — a heretic being someone who asked questions about the Bible. Good old Innocent decided the best way to deal with this annoyance was a bit of Jehovah-style bloodletting. So his holiness cast an eye on Beziers, France to put the fear of God into his subjects. It is recorded that the last savage Christian persecution under a pagan Roman Emperor Diocletian, killed some 2,000 Christians. In Beziers, Pope Innocent killed at least six times that number — 12,000 — in one afternoon! For this day’s holy work, his holiness pronounced a special blessing for his soldiers and promised an indulgence from purgatory. Where was Jesus when Christian soldiers murdered Christian men, women and children in his name? In the same place when his soldiers sliced open pregnant Midianite girls back when he was calling himself Jehovah.

That was hardly a coherent argument for why you insist on referring to us as the “Filthy Left”. Plenty of conservatives have comitted treasonous acts. They also get abortions and did so quite frequently when they weren’t constotutionally legal. Sodomy? Oh, please. Have you seen the list of Republicans convicted of sex crimes with minors? As for Ted Kennedy, none of us are responsible for what he did over 35 years ago, but there have certainly been Republican murderers in our nation’s history (Ted Bundy and Timothy McVeigh, just to name two.)
Most of the rest of what you wrote is equally nonsensical, but I had to laugh when you talked about what the left teaches us in “corporate boardrooms”?? Most of the people in corporate boardrooms are conservatives. I’ll let you go back to your daily Mexican-beating rituals.

May 19th, 2006 at 12:36 pm#75 I have no doubt that there are poor people that believes in ID, but it’s a problem of education and hammering of the idea, by christian churchs aligned with biblical conceptions of the world, not of party alignment. Has more ado with blind faith, but lack of scientifical education is a must in many cases. Anyways, a lot of people lets his scientifical education aside when his diacon says so (specially in the puritan Southern USA). After all, religion is about BLIND faith, as I said.
Anyways, the blind faithers, and specially in the South, tend to vote Republican. And ID is a PR stunt of the Republican Elite, in an attempt of catch-22 of religious people, using the religious leaders as proxies. They say “if you don’t agree with ID, you are against God”.
See my argument: to trust in ID, either you let aside your scientific mind to not question the idea because if not you’re against your religion (or at least the republican diacons say so), or you are plain ignorant (=poor in the most cases).

I guess you’re trying to say that CHRISTIANS are the biggest killers the world has ever seen. Is that your point? Boy, to me you’re just a mid morning snack. The Reds have chalked up more murder since 1917 than all the wars of humanity since the begining of recorded history combined. You don’t believe me? Here’s a link to just one study.
Constructing this utopia was seen as though a war on poverty, exploitation, imperialism, and inequality. And for the greater good, as in a real war, people are killed. And thus this war for the communist utopia had its necessary enemy casualties, the clergy, bourgeoisie, capitalists, wreckers, counterrevolutionaries, rightists, tyrants, rich, landlords, and noncombatants that unfortunately got caught in the battle. In a war millions may die, but the cause may be well justified, as in the defeat of Hitler and an utterly racist Nazism. And to many communists, the cause of a communist utopia was such as to justify all the deaths. The irony of this is that communism in practice, even after decades of total control, did not improve the lot of the average person, but usually made their living conditions worse than before the revolution. It is not by chance that the greatest famines have occurred within the Soviet Union (about 5,000,000 dead during 1921-23 and 7,000,000 from 1932-3) and communist China (about 27,000,000 dead from 1959-61). In total almost 55,000,000 people died in various communist famines and associated diseases, a little over 10,000,000 of them from democidal famine. This is as though the total population of Turkey, Iran, or Thailand had been completely wiped out. And that something like 35,000,000 people fled communist countries as refugees, as though the countries of Argentina or Columbia had been totally emptied of all their people, was an unparalleled vote against the utopian pretensions of Marxism-Leninism.

May 19th, 2006 at 12:44 pmI am so tired of hearing the left are communists!!! I’m also tired of communism and socialism being flung around like insults. The philosophies of true communism and socialism are perfectly valid political points of view.
The only reason there is a stigma is because of the Soviet Union, Cuba, China, and so on. Although they were/are communist, the truly scary part is not the way their economy works, but the way they treat their citizens, because of the single-party dictatorship (or single person dictatorship in some examples), the amount of government interference in citizen’s lives, and the lack of rights for citizens. If you really wanted to get picky (and I do), the right’s hero, G. W. Bush, has done a LOT more to remove personal freedoms and expand government authority in the past few years than ANYBODY on the left has EVER in American history.
The argument about economic systems (communism of some form versus free market) is almost irrelevant because both Democrats and Republicans believe in a free market economy. The only big difference is that the Democrats want more government regulation in place to prevent abuses of the system, whereas Republicans feel that the system itself can fix any problems that crop up.
Filthy Left, my ass.
May 19th, 2006 at 12:49 pmThe lie that you propagate is that the ‘Filthy Left’, in which you lump everyone without a black shirt, are communists and therefore all part and parcel of the murderous history of communism. Reid calls language proposal racist
By Charles Hurt
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
May 19, 2006
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid called a proposal to make English the official language “racist” on the Senate floor yesterday.
May 19th, 2006 at 12:59 pm“This amendment is racist. I think it’s directed basically to people who speak Spanish,” the Democrat said during the already tense debate over immigration reform.
Moments later, the Senate approved the measure on a 63-34 vote. Virtually all Republicans were joined by 11 Democrats to approve the largely symbolic amendment. Immediately following that vote, the Senate approved a second amendment, declaring on a 58-39 vote that English is the “common and unifying language.”

IRI –
Explain how it isn’t racist. Now, if there wasn’t this big smokescreen by the Republicans to pay attention to illegal immigration and the proposal was made to make English our official languge, fine. I still find it stupid, but you could claim that it isn’t racially motivated.
But the fact that illegal immigration, and specifically illegal Mexican immigrants, are in the public spotlight right now, how can you possibly claim that this proposal ISN’T racially motivated?

Only O’Reilly’s radio show would be subject to the fines. Cable TV is not “over-the-air” broadcasting, so the FCC rules have to be different. Of course, it would nice if people with IQs in the two-digit range (like Senator Brownback) would learn that the cure for objectionable programming is to turn the set off or to another channel, not ban what you personally find distasteful. I find Republican members of Congress lying on TV to be distasteful, but that doesn’t mean they’ll get fined for doing it.

May 19th, 2006 at 1:33 pm#99 – That was my point, although it appears to have been taken out of context (which seems to be an ongoing trend for righties). A perfectly valid philosophy does not translate into “good in practice.” Point taken and I should have put less emphasis on that point.
I’m a huge supporter of the free market economy. I must be since I am a small business owner! haha. Although, I am also a socialist, according to several political spectrum surveys I took. Being a registered Democrat, I’m definitely on the further “left” side of the Democratic party. I’m not embarrassed by it because I understand what it truly means and what the goals are. Not going to get into specifics in this post.
My whole point was that Dubya and his cronies are more akin to the “totalitarian” philosophies of Stalin and Castro’s government than any Democrat or other lefty!
Therefore calling US, the lefties, “communists” with heavy reference to Soviet-style totalitarian communism is completely and utterly ridiculous. Not to mention nearly every American lefty (no matter HOW far left) supports the free market economy, so the economic standpoint of the philosophy does not match either.
Clear?

Explain how it isn’t racist. Now, if there wasn’t this big smokescreen by the Republicans to pay attention to illegal immigration and the proposal was made to make English our official languge, fine. I still find it stupid, but you could claim that it isn’t racially motivated.
But the fact that illegal immigration, and specifically illegal Mexican immigrants, are in the public spotlight right now, how can you possibly claim that this proposal ISN’T racially motivated?

How many races do we have here in this country? You’ve got your White guys, Black guys, Hispanic guys, Asian guys, Indian guys east and west and then there’s a few that defy description plus the Irish. What’s one thing that everyone has in common? The English language. Why? Because that is the language we speak though I’m sure the English would beg to differ. It is the language of our culture, our business our education system. It’s the ONE THING that holds us together.
The Filthy Left has instituted bi-lingual education and it’s only a matter of time before it’s tri-lingual and on and on. Why do they do that, to make it easier for Hispanic immigrants to settle in? No, they can never settle in and “make it” in this country unless they speak English. They do it to keep the people ignorant, uninformed and dependent. Just as illiteracy is used as a weapon against the people in third world countries to maintain the power of the “educated class” bi-lingualism is a weapon against the newcomer. A Portuguese/Spanish/German/English speaking business associate of mine from Brazil mentioned it just yesterday as a matter of fact. The left wing elite in Mexico and South America are working with ours to maintain the peon position of new immigrants in this country. They do not want to assimilate and thus like Reid play the race card whenever their plans are thwarted. Who’s the racist, the one who works to bring people up or the one who uses race to keep people down?

May 19th, 2006 at 1:58 pm#112 – Ignoring the rest of your factually incorrect and slightly racist post, we should be so lucky as to have mandated bilingual or trilingual education country-wide. Not many 1st world countries DON’T have a standard multilingual education. I wish I was exposed to foreign languages growing up. It is incredibly hard to learn foreign languages later in life if you don’t know at least one more in addition to your first language while you are young.
Conservatives should love this. Think about the advantages it would give to your little bratty rich kids if they could speak the native language of their rich global business partners!

May 19th, 2006 at 2:12 pmI know that certain people will disagree (and their opinions mean nothing to me), but I believe that one of the reasons Americans are so ignorant about the rest of the world is because we don’t make our young people learn other languages, like they do in European countries. When I was stationed at Ramstein AB in West Germany, I was surprised to learn that the town names were not the English-sounding names I grew up learning. What we call “Cologne†is actually “Kolnâ€, and “Munich†is actually “Munchen†(with the little umlaut over the u). I came to believe that if we were to learn the names of the countries and cities of the world in the language the native citizens of those places use, there would be a lot fewer misunderstandings in the world. I believe that instead of making everyone who wants to come here learn English (are you going to teach the president?), we should try to teach Americans to speak as many languages as possible. The more the merrier. The more you can understand of what other people are actually saying, the more you’ll understand them and why they think the way they do. I, for one, could never be proud of being ignorant, the way some who post here are. But learning other languages helps understand why people in other countries call their cities what they do. It will also become clear that they have a different way of looking at life because they have had a different set of experiences.

If more people want to speak Spanish then go ahead, let the demographic decide. Seriously, IRI, men set the role models for what defines ‘sexy’ in women. If you don’t want the Spice Girls to be sexual role models, then stop finding them attractive. Start dating smart women who won’t sleep with you, get the majority of men to do the same, and you’ll change the standard.
For example – during the Renaissance ‘Rubenesque’ women were considered sexy (you know, plump and rosy), as seen in the numerous portraits and sculptures of robust women. This was because that was what was seen as attractive by men.

The Mexican Fox Regime is threatening to sue the US, if National Guard troops arrest or detain any illegal immigrants who cross the border, which is ridiculous!
United States of America has a right to secure borders so Mexico has zero right to object to legitimate actions to stop the flood of desperate poor crossing into USA!
Pres. Vicente Fox is negligent in securing the border, which forces the construction of security fences and military troops to patrol it to stop drugs and terrorists!
Pres. George W. Bush wants Mexican border basically surrealistically defended by Potemkin guards without any weapons, so a charade to fool the USA citizenry!
American Senators for the most part are kowtowing to the vile Corporate Elite, who want the border left open/undefended, so they have steady supply of serfs!
The undocumented laborers are being exploited, by Fox, Bush, Elite, and the Senate, which is an outrage that must be vilified by the Press and all Americans!

Nonsense. The opposite is true. Testosterone makes men want to either f*ck or fight. And that’s essentially the morality you lament here.
In sex, the minority sets the tone. This means that because there are more women than men, that men get to determine what is and what isn’t appropriate sexual behavior. Because we currently have fewer men than women, it is men who determine women’s behavior.
If there were more women than men, then women would be chaste (as has been seen in periods of history) because women could be more selective, since there were more men than women. But since the opposite exists, men as the minority want women who will have sex withthem, so women become more agreeable to get a mate.

Everyone? Nope. Just those who live in high-Spanish populations are being required by Capitalism to speak Spanish. Go try to get a job, even at McDonald’s in Miami without knowing Spanish. YOu can’t. Why? Corporate America is requiring employees speak Spanish, so they can gettheir business (a.k.a. their money).
As a consequence of this, people in those areas are not learning English. They don’t have to becaiuse Capitalism has ensured that they don’t have to with Spanish speaking McDonald’s cashiers, Spanish television channels, etc. So, to be able to handle that consequence, schools are being required to learn Spanish to deal with the kids.
Teachers speaking Spanish is only a consequence of the system Corporate America (conservatives) initially created.
May 19th, 2006 at 3:09 pmJules,
I only got to talk to the planes. I never got to work on them. because Shemya is considered a remote assignment (and why not? it’s out at the end of the Aleutian Islands), they let me give a list of three choices for follow-on, and they would “do their best” to put me in one of them. So I chose Hawaii, England, and West Germany. Figures I would get my third choice. It would have been nice to have to deal with all the “hardships” of living in Hawaii for a couple of years. I could have handled it, but they wanted me on the front lines of the Cold War, so it was off to Ramstein. I got out before the big airshow disaster, but if I had re-enlisted, I would have been there at the time and I likely would have been where the Italian plane came down into the crowd. Of course, I would have been pretty drunk at the time, so it wouldn’t have hurt much.

No, actually I already refuted your post in the very same one you were replying to. It was obvious that you didn’t take the time to actually comprehend what I was communicating.
You can not factually contend that America’s willingness to give assistance to minorities is done to hurt them (although it may ultimiately not). I am willing to admit that the “road to hell is paved with good intentions”, but there is no way you can honestly push domination as a motivation.
Besides, it seems quite obvious that its not the blacks or minorities you care about. You are simply using their plight to get at what you call the “filthy left”. Its actually quite transparent and shallow. If I’m wrong about that then I apologize, but somehow, if you were being completely honest I truly doubt it.

Capitalism
An economic system based on a free market, open competition, profit motive and private ownership of the means of production. Capitalism encourages private investment and business, compared to a government-controlled economy. Investors in these private companies (i.e. shareholders) also own the firms and are known as capitalists.

I believe it. I mean, it makes complete sense to those of us who actually use our brains for thinking that Corporate America wants cheap labor, so it turns a blind eye to citizenship status, then markets their products and services to the areas with high concentrations of illegals, keeping them ignorant in their means to integrate, and then bitches that the school system is trying to keep up. I detest the hypocracy of the system at work. And yet another unfair reason to blame teachers. And they wonder why their is a shortage.
I would guess that by high school, a lot of them drop out?
May 19th, 2006 at 4:24 pmYou can not factually contend that America’s willingness to give assistance to minorities is done to hurt them (although it may ultimiately not). I am willing to admit that the “road to hell is paved with good intentionsâ€, but there is no way you can honestly push domination as a motivation.
Besides, it seems quite obvious that its not the blacks or minorities you care about. You are simply using their plight to get at what you call the “filthy leftâ€. Its actually quite transparent and shallow. If I’m wrong about that then I apologize, but somehow, if you were being completely honest I truly doubt it.

May 19th, 2006 at 4:45 pmAddition:
When US corporations abuse the environment or the people of another country, it is surely morally and ethically wrong, but isn’t it also a National Security issue. It does nothing to promote a positive image of the US and our way of life, and it creates animosity that can have a real blow back result. We can’t just say globalization is the future, and let corporations rape the countries. That seems very short-sited.
The book, Megatrends 2010, talks about this, among a number of important issues.

It’s organized religion that turned women into semen recepticles who are just doing what they are told they exist for – breeding. You cannot name a single country where women are equals that has a high crime rate, high unemployment, low health, and high abortion rate. Yet, there are dozens with low qualities of life who support patriarchal religions that consider women second class citizens.
Empowering women is the way to fix what ails this country. Not the opposite.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. There was a coincidence that in 1929, the stock market crashed and that sucked. But really, if youthink it had any correlation to women’s suffrage in 1920, you’re not only nuts, but you’re seriously grasping at straws to start an argument.
It is Christianity that gave women a self worth,
Clearly you don’t read the Bible. It says, in the second Chapter that woman came from man (wrong, it’s the other way around – unless your father had special abilities :), to be his ‘helper’. Yes, I know your spin on it. But, the subsequent 750 pages support teh dictionary definition of the word, not yours.
a valued and honored place in society and eventually made them the equal in spirit if not in mind of men.
Nonsense. The Judeo-Islamic-Christian tree is one born of Patriarchal heritage – where men are best and women are second. Christianity not only endorses that belief system, but it is a declining belief system in the countries with the highest standard of living – where women are actually equal.

May 19th, 2006 at 11:08 pm“Spanglish” California mocks Senate English push
Fri May 19, 2006 6:45pm ET By Aarthi Sivaraman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A day after the U.S. Senate proposed declaring English the national language, Californians wondered on Friday what all the fuss was about. Most immigrants embrace English, and Spanish exists happily alongside.
“I do have my own language but I do feel that if you are here, want a career and a good life, you should embrace English,” said Spanish-speaking immigrant and cafe manager Sam Simonian.
On the streets of heavily Hispanic Los Angeles, both Latinos and non-Latinos said what is decided on Capitol Hill won’t change their plans to learn the language.
“If you went to France, you would learn French. This country is built on English so you need to learn it,” said Elmira Ross.
Seeking to add an amendment to the contentious immigration reform bill, the Senate agreed on Thursday to make English the national language and moments later also adopted a milder alternative calling English the country’s “unifying language.”
Which version ends up in the bill will depend on negotiations with the U.S. House of Representatives.
President George W. Bush has long opposed making English the country’s national language, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales told reporters on Friday, but he did not say where Bush stood on the amendment.
Neither proposal would bar the use of Spanish or other languages in government services. Continued…

May 20th, 2006 at 10:29 amAm I really the only liberal that feels that English should be protected as the national language? It is costing the government countless millions each year to cater to non-english speaking people in America. The biggest step to unifying any country is creating a universal system of communication and measurement, and we are losing our unified communications. The point is, we need one language that everyone is required to know for legal documents and all transactions, and I sure don’t see the cultural reasons for making it Spanish.

Unfortunately for him, it has been debunked by Juan Cole here with plenty of sources to back him up. The question remains is why would such an assertion come out now, who benefits (apparently the remains of the Shah’s disgusting regime started the story off and the right-wing press picked it up joyfully) and how does this impact public opinion as the Chimp and his Organ-Grinder prepare to attack Iran?
May 20th, 2006 at 1:31 pm#234 – Zach, please don’t fall for this crap. Do you actually think English is at risk of disappearing in this country? Even if speaking English is required of every single person on this soil, there will still be those who need help with translation and learning. It will always cost something. This topic is trotted out every time the Republicrooks are worried about the next election. Flag burning will be next…
On the other hand, our varied cultures and languages are what make this country so wonderful and interesting. I work in the legal field, and I’ve had to hire translators for people who speak English, but in order to be sure they understand the legal documents perfectly, I hire a translator (after seeking their permission, of course). I’ve hired translators for Polish, Chinese (so many different dialects!), German, French, Spanish, Vietnamese, and so many more.
America will always be diverse — it’s our foundation — it’s who we are! My ancestors spoke Dutch, German, and Lakota — all of them learned English to one degree or another, and all members of the current generations speak English. Unfortunately, none of us speaks Dutch, German or Lakota. I consider that the greater loss.

A congressman under investigation for bribery was caught on videotape accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded, according to a court document released Sunday. Agents later found the cash hidden in his freezer.
At one audiotaped meeting, Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., chuckles about writing in code to keep secret what the government contends was his corrupt role in getting his children a cut of a communications company’s deal for work in Africa.
As Jefferson and the informant passed notes about what percentage the lawmaker’s family might receive, the congressman “began laughing and said, ‘All these damn notes we’re writing to each other as if we’re talking, as if the FBI is watching,’” according to the affidavit.
Jefferson, who represents New Orleans, has not been charged and denies any wrongdoing.

Since after his death I decided not to remarry or get a child outside my matrimonial home which the Bible is against.
When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of (US$4.5M)Four. Million,Five hundred Thousand United States Dollar) in a Security Company in Abidjan Cote d’Ivoire. Presently, this money which was originally intended to be invested in the real estate before his untimely daeth by my husband is still with the Securuty Company, in a box registered as family valuables.
Recently,Following my ill health, my Doctor told me that I may not last for the next eight months due to my cancer problem. The one that disturbs me most is my stroke sickness.Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to a Christain organization (Church) that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct herein, according to the desire of my late husband before his death.
I want this fund to be used in Christain Activities like,Orphanages, Christain schools, and Churches for propagating the word of God and to endeavour that the house of God is maintained.
The Bible made us to understand that “Blessed is the hand that giveth”. I took this decision because I don’t have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I don’t want my husband’s efforts to be used by unbelievers. I don’t want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly way. This is why I am taking this decision. I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord. Exodus 14 VS 14 says that “the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace”.
I don’t need any telephone communication in this regard because of my health hence the presence of my husband’s relatives around me always.I don’t want them to know about this development. With God all things are possible. As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the Security Company in Abidjan. I will also issue you the documents that will prove you the present beneficiary of this fund.
I want you and the Church to always pray for me because the lord is my shephard. My happiness is that I lived a life of a worthy Christian. Whoever that Wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and Truth. Please always be prayerful all through your life. Contact me on this e-mail address: any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing another Church for this same purpose.
Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I Stated herein. Hoping to receive your reply.

Yours in Christ,
Mrs Joycy Vaya
